The 26th Bristol Half Marathon Hits the streets on 21st September The first Bristol Half Marathon attracted 1,000 runners and was held in 1989… By 2010 over 16,000 people took part, and it was firmly established as a respected event on the national calendar. It has continued to go from strength to strength over the years with 2013 marking the silver anniversary. Bristol has hosted some memorable running events over the years. In 2001 the City of Bristol was chosen to host the 10th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships alongside the Bristol Half Marathon. Amateur runners who took part in the race that year could follow British legend Paula Radcliffe and Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia around the course. Thousands of Bristolians turned out to watch Paula cross the finish line in the record breaking time of 66 minutes 47 seconds and Gebrselassie take first place in the men‟s race with an impressive time of 60 minutes 3 seconds. In 2003, local veteran Nick Rose won the „Legends Challenge‟ – a race within a race that saw top British Olympians Steve Cram, Tim Hutchings, Hugh Jones, Steve Jones and Mike McLeod compete against each other for the first time in nearly twenty years. It is worth mentioning that Steve Cram and Tim Hutchings have continued to run in the event – when their busy schedules allow! Steve Brace the winner of the first race in 1989 has maintained his links with the race and Hugh Jones is the official course measurer.

Both Hugh and Steve can usually be found helping out on race day on the Start and Finish line. This years race will start and finish in Bristol's historic Harbourside. The scenic, sea-level route will take runners past the Harbourside, out and back along the Portway, through the stunning Avon Gorge, and pass twice under Brunel‟s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge, along Cumberland Road then around the old city before returning to Anchor Road. The course is a point-to-point loop, so lead runners will not lap slower participants. The Portway section at the beginning of the course spreads runners out early in the race. A narrow Start area and the 2 wave start are also designed to reduce congestion.

Over the years, the Bristol Half Marathon has produced some memorable moments... Those of you who were at the Start Line for the 2013 race will have seen the bugal fanfare. This was provided by Corps of Drums from Her Majesties Band of the Royal Marines… who also took part in the race.

Mizuno is offering all entrants to the Bristol Half Marathon £20 off the full range of Mizuno U4iC running shoes… Just take your copy of Direct Local to the participating retailers or the Race Village on 21st September and show the money off ad below.

The team of eight Marines stepped off with the other starters and maintained a steady 10 minute mile pace throughout, completing the event in just over two hours. Unlike the other runners they completed the half marathon in full kit. This meant that they ran in boots, whilst wearing uniform and carrying 30lbs on their backs. The Royal Marines not only had a team running, they were accompanied by the Corps of Drums from Her Majesties Band of the Royal Marines. The drummers waited for the running team to appear in the home strait before drumming them across the line and into Millennium square. At the sound of the drums the crowds parted and the Marines, wearing their Green Berets, marched into the square. Money-Wise Meals For The Whole Family Earlier this year, research found that food prices are rising four times faster than the average person‟s income and families are finding it more and more difficult to eat healthily on a budget. But a local expert on healthy eating says it‟s possible to trim your shopping bills and your waistline with the help from weight-loss organisation Slimming World. Sarah, who runs groups in Hengrove and Whitchurch every week , says: “People often think that eating well is expensive but, with a little know-how, it‟s possible to cook tasty food that the whole family will love and that‟s good for them too.” We help our members to cook delicious money-wise meals for four. Our recipes, including meat, veg and fish dishes, can cost as little as £6 or less – that‟s £1.50 or less per person – and show that eating healthily doesn‟t have to break the bank. Slimmers are encouraged to cook meals from scratch using „Free Foods‟, which can be enjoyed freely on the plan without weighing or counting, like lean meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, pasta and rice so they can whip up a variety of fabulously filling meals and get the most from their shopping budget. Slimming World members are also replacing the takeaways they used to have with healthy home cooked versions of the same meals, often talking about the different meals we‟ve tried that week, and fakeaways are definitely a big hit. Better yet, these fakeaways are much cheaper than the meals people used to order in for themselves and their families, so members are not only losing weight and eating more healthily but saving money too – what‟s not to love! For more information please contact Sarah on 07879 443888 or alternatively, email svbryant@live.co.uk.

SUPER FOODS FOR SUPER RESULTS ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

There are a lot of running events taking place at this time of year. Some serious, some not so serious. Whether you're taking part in a major marathon or the local 5k, proper training is essential to achieve your desired results. You may have logged many miles on the streets or treadmill to get ready, but have you prepared nutritionally? The number of calories you need to consume daily depends on the duration and intensity of your workouts. Keep in mind that you'll burn roughly 100 calories for every mile you run, depending on your size. You'll want to eat enough so you don't feel faint or weak toward the end of your workout, but don't use running as an excuse to eat everything in sight! Unless you're a high-mileage runner, your daily calorie needs aren't going to be dramatically higher than a non-runner's. So whether your goal is a life-style change or finishing within a certain time, when it comes to nutrition expand your mind, not your waist! Your diet should consist of a good balance of energy-rich carbohydrates, protein for repair and re-growth of muscles and tissues, fats for energy and protection and fibre, vitamins and minerals for your immune support.

Before your run Skip the snack if you're running for less than an hour. If you really need a boost, have a banana (about an hour before hand) because they are easy to digest and are loaded with fast-acting carbohydrate or a handful of Goji Berries. These nutrient dense berries are an energy providing powerhouse. During Your Run Drink around 6 to 8 ounces of water every 15 minutes to stay hydrated. If you are running for over an hour, your body wants more than water as you need to replace your electrolytes. Add some wheatgrass powder into your water. You may want to flavour this with a little Agave Nectar (plant based sweetener) or lime/lemon juice. After Your Run Eat or snack within 30 minutes of your workout, when your muscles replace their power supply fastest. With a carb and protein ration of roughly 4-to-1. Smoothies are a quick and easy way to incorporate Super Foods into your training regime, to give you the nutritional impact your body requires.

Lisa Barnes is a Health & Wellness Coach and founder of LBH Superfoods. She has been working within the field of Health & Fitness for the last 25 years.

BRISTOL HARBOUR FESTIVAL 2014 Local businesses, maritime enthusiasts, performers and artists came together recently for the annual Bristol Harbour Festival, to bring art, entertainment, food and family fun to this award winning event. The festival celebrates the city's maritime heritage and the importance of Bristol's docks and harbour, and it was the perfect opportunity to get into the party spirit and have a great day out for all the family. The 2014 Festival brought the Harbour alive by hosting a fantastic eclectic mix of music, performance and art. Bristolians enjoyed creative workshops including knitting, jewellery making and up-cycling their wardrobes, fun family activities from face painting to boat trips, along with the best in arts, entertainment, music, food, drink and family fun.

The Bath and Bristol Institute of Mechanical Engineering crews wowed the crowds with a cardboard boat race. There was a welcomed return of the much-loved Newfoundland dogs, who put on some terrific displays near Prince Street Bridge across the weekend. Visitors were left open mouthed by Big Crazy Flyboarding displays. This is a unique sport that sees riders donning flyboards and shooting 15 metres up into the air. Cirque Bijou created a cosmic playground with daredevil circus acts, colourful street theatre and loads of space-themed activities for children, from baby racing and rocket building to the world's largest pom-pom galaxy, there was entertainment for youngsters of all ages.

RNLI lifeboats old and new were moored opposite the ss Great Britain and visitors were able to see the much loved Matthew as well as the Kaskelot, a replica three-masted barque double topsail, and Brocklbank, the last operational example of a traditional tug.

On the music font, there was something to suit everyone, with headline acts in Queen Square to a more mellow mood at Cascade Steps. There was also performances on stages at The Grain Barge, the popular floating bar and restaurant on Mardyke Wharf, and the Thekla.

Children from various Bristol primary schools built models of the Bristol Gig Pilot Cutter and raced them from Princes Street Bridge .

With over 250,000 visitors, the 2014 Bristol Harbour Festival lived up to the hype, and was yet again a fantastic event for the whole family!
