With John Teasdale, Driver Trainer with the TTC Group Have you ever driven along a road and not known what the speed limit is? Chances are you‟re not alone. Many motorists express frustration at the plethora of road signs now littering our towns and cities, making it nigh on impossible to work out what the speed limit is. Then, just as you manage to work it out and breathe a sigh of relief, another sign leaps out of nowhere and the limit changes again! Grumbling in language best kept to yourself, you slow down and, being a generally law-abiding citizen, try your best to keep to this new limit – only to find an iratequeue of impatient drivers following along behind! If this sounds all-too familiar, fear not – thousands of motorists up and down the country share your experience on a daily basis, and a fair few find themselves invited to attend a „speed awareness course‟ as an alternative to a £100 speeding fine and three penalty points. Although many drivers are not exactly over-the-moon to be invited, many recognise their value as not only an alternative to prosecution, but also a good opportunity to refresh their knowledge of speed limits and the Highway Code. In fact, according to a recent survey by the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists), three quarters of motorists support the use of speed awareness courses, up from 70 per cent in 2011. This is good news for road safety, as it has long been recognised that education, rather than prosecution is the key to ensuring that drivers are both safe

well-informed when it comes to dealing with some of the most congested roads in Europe. One of the largest providers of such courses is the TTC Group, which is responsible for running speed awareness courses and other diversionary education schemes for 11 police forces. They also educate professional drivers and the corporate sector, help local authority road safety teams and deliver cycle instruction and pedestrian safety for schools, councils and road safety organisations. Clients who attend TTC Group‟s speed awareness course often comment on how valuable the training has been, with many realising that perhaps their understanding of road signs, road markings and speed limits has not kept pace with our constantly evolving road network and the accompanying changes in road traffic law it requires. Other topics covered include excess speed, in-car distractions and drink and drug driving. Motorists who live in the Avon and Somerset Constabulary area can book onto a free two hour interactive workshop, Road Smart, which aims to raise awareness of potential hazards on the roads and build on motorists‟ existing knowledge and experience. There are two courses available, one for 1724 year olds and one for drivers aged 25 and over. For more information, or to book a place, please visit www.roadsmart.org.

In the meantime, here are our top tips for effective speed management, which our clients tell us have been most useful in helping them to stay safe and legal: Use your gears to stay in control Selecting a lower gear will help you manage your speed in built-up areas, because engine braking will help to hold the vehicle back and prevent it running away from you. Try 3rd gear for 30mph and, for those challenging 20mph limits, give 2nd a try. Modern engines use fuel-injection systems controlled by computer, meaning you won‟t use more fuel. Look out for street lights If you can see a system of street lights (that‟s three or more), then the speed limit is 30mph. They can be lights on telegraph poles or strip lighting in tunnels, and they don‟t have to be switched on. Don‟t worry about the space between them, either – 3 or more and it‟s a system. If there are no streetlights, then it‟s national speed limit (remember, that will vary depending on the type of road and the vehicle you are driving). This rule applies to all road types, apart from motorways. If the speed limit is anything different, it must be signed – because signs overrule streetlights. A dual carriageway is nothing to do with the number of lanes Yes, you did read that correctly. A dual carriageway is defined by the fact that it must have a physical separation between the two opposing carriageways. That can be grass, infill, concrete or metal barriers, or just a raised kerb down the middle. You can have one or more lanes in either direction, but

the presence of two lanes alone does not constitute a dual carriageway. A dual carriageway with street lights is limited to 30mph Again, not a typo! Unless there are signs telling you otherwise, the speed limit will be 30mph – remember the streetlight rule. If the limit was anything different, there would be signs to tell you this. Many drivers forget that the streetlight rule applies to dual carriageways too, and are caught out because the road „looks faster‟. If you‟re towing, you should be slowing! If you are towing anything, whether it‟s a small box trailer, a boat, or a caravan, you will be subject to lower speed limits on a national speed limit section of road. For a single carriageway road, that‟s a maximum of 50mph, and for a dual carriageway, that‟s 60mph. It‟s worth remembering that these lower limits also apply to the majority of vans and to minibuses – important if you need to hire one. If you are towing on a motorway, your maximum speed is set at 60mph. Give yourself time One of the biggest causes of speeding is time pressure, or running late. Allow yourself that „safety margin‟ of extra time, so you don‟t feel pressured into breaking the law and risking speeding fines, points, or worse. Remember that a smooth, progressive drive within the speed limit uses up to 25% less fuel. And speed limits are just that – limits, not targets. There will be many occasions when the limit just isn‟t appropriate, and you‟ll need to adjust your speed accordingly.

Stars from across British television and radio including Sir Terry Wogan, Fearne Cotton, Nick Grimshaw, Tess Daly, Matt Baker and Alex Jones have joined forces to galvanise the nation to become baking heroes for BBC Children in Need by baking one of the nation‟s favourite cakes. BBC Children in Need‟s six celebrity friends are each championing one of the nation‟s favourite cakes, and are asking the public to be a baking hero by getting behind their team and holding a bake sale with their chosen cake to support the 2014 Appeal. Backing #TeamLemonDrizzle is BBC Children in Need‟s Lifetime President, Sir Terry Wogan, who said of his team: “My own wife's lemon drizzle cake is a thing of beauty, so, I am asking you, the Great British public, to get behind me and bake, bake, bake, to make a lemon drizzle to remember, for BBC Children in Need this year!

Think of all the money we can raise together for disadvantaged children and young people all across the UK.” A Baker by name, Matt Bakeris fronting #TeamFruitCake, he is calling on his baking friends to join his team and bake a delicious fruit cake: “Come on Britain, I want you to join Team Fruit cake! What could be easier to raise lots of money for BBC Children in Need?” Baking enthusiast Fearne Cotton is calling on the Nation to join #TeamCarrotCake, Fearne said of her team: “Come on everyone, I want you to join me in baking a delicious carrot cake for BBC Children in Need this year! It‟ll be fun to throw on an apron and get a bit messy whilst becoming a baking hero for Pudsey, every penny your carrot cake raises goes straight to projects supporting children and young people right here in the UK.”

Swapping her Strictly ball gown for an apron, Tess Daly is captaining #TeamVictoriaSponge, Tess called on bakers across the UK saying: “As a nation we all love a slice of Victoria Sponge Cake, so I am asking you to join Team Victoria Sponge and become a baking hero whilst raising money for BBC Children in Need. Victoria Sponge has it all – it‟s light, it‟s jammy and it‟s perfect with a cup of tea. So come on everyone, be a hero and bake for BBC Children in Need this year!” Typically calling on the public whilst they are enjoying their breakfast, Nick Grimshaw is asking the public to pop down their cereal and join his team, #TeamChocolateCake: “Come on Britain; I want you to join me in baking a delicious Chocolate cake for BBC Children in Need this year! We all know Chocolate cake is better than Sir Terry‟s favourite, Lemon Drizzle, so join me and together we can help make a difference.” Baking hero Alex Jones is taking the helm of #TeamBattenberg and is asking for people up and down the UK to bake a classic Battenberg, for BBC Children in Need this year, she said of her team: “Baking for BBC Children in Need could not be simpler, pick one of the nation‟s favourite cakes and put on a bake sale! I want you all to join Team Battenberg, but whatever team you decide to join will go on to help make a difference, so thank you.” David Ramsden, Chief Executive of BBC Children in Need says: “There are thousands of children and young people right here in the UK who urgently need our help and we can only be there for them thanks to the incredible generosity, imagination and commitment of our supporters.

BBC Children in Need‟s vision is that every child in the UK has a safe, happy and secure childhood and the chance to reach their potential. We will realise this vision by supporting, promoting and publicising work that addresses the challenges that children and young people face and work that builds their skills and resilience. We are currently supporting c.2,600 projects that are working with children facing a range of disadvantages for example, poverty and deprivation; children who have been the victims of abuse or neglect or disabled young people.

This year we hope that everyone will have fun and raise money that really will change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people by baking or doing lots of other amazing things!” The official fundraising pack is available for download now from bbc.co.uk/Pudsey and is jam packed with baking ideas to help the public with their fundraising efforts, plus lots of exclusive content from the team leaders. To date the Great British public has raised over £740 million for children and young people across the UK and the Charity is calling on people to once again pull out the stops and start baking to help raise money to change young lives! The BBC Children in Need Appeal is a charity registered in England and Wales (802052) and Scotland (SC039557) whose aim is to make a positive change to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.

Christmas came early to a group of slimmer's in South Bristol as they launched a festive weight loss challenge. On top of making their Christmas lists and planning their Christmas shopping, members of the local Slimming World groups are embarking on a 12week mission to slim down in time for Christmas and the New Year. Their seasonal slim is part of an initiative running in all 12,000 Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland called Love…a Slimming World Christmas. To mark the start of the campaign our groups threw its first Christmas party of 2014 complete with decorations and delicious party food. Sarah, who runs groups In Hengrove and Whitchurch, says: “Christmas is a wonderful time of year with so much to celebrate, but if you‟re feeling unhappy with your weight it can also be a very difficult time – there‟s the fear of feeling uncomfortable in every party outfit and the worry that you might lose control completely and end up reaching January heavier than you were before. “The run-up to Christmas is extremely busy for most of us, it can play havoc with our regular routines and there are lots of extra occasions like Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas dos that can make it harder than usual to manage our weight.

Local groups launched their Love…a Slimming World Christmas campaign in style. Sarah says: “We threw a cracker of a Christmas party with a great big buffet of delicious healthy party food. We wanted to remind ourselves – and show people who didn‟t already know about Slimming World‟s fabulous Food Optimising eating plan – that you don‟t have to miss out of any of the festive fun when you‟re watching your weight. It‟s simply about making small, easy changes to the way you plan, cook and eat, and choosing the healthiest options when you‟re not the one preparing the food and drink. “People often think it sounds too good to be true, but by making some careful choices and getting the right support it is possible to get through Christmas without gaining more weight and, in fact, even start the new year slimmer than ever.” If you‟d like to join a local group on their seasonal slim down it‟s not too late. And, as an extra-early Christmas gift, anyone who signs up to 12 weeks of Slimming World support before November 1st will get a free copy of „Slimming Worlds Christmas Recipe Book‟, which is packed full of delicious festive dishes and worth £4.95.

New members can simply pop along or call Sarah on 07879 443888 for more information.

Keeping active when the dark, cold nights close in can be a challenge too, but by sharing ideas and keeping each other motivated members stay on track to reach their goals. “So the aim of Love…a Slimming World Christmas is to show everyone that it‟s possible to slim down with Slimming World whatever the time of year, and anyone who gets started now could easily be a stone – or even two – lighter by 2015. Each week in our group we‟ll share recipes, advice and ideas for coping with potential challenges, from Christmas parties to shopping trips, and help one another to rediscover the magic of Christmas while still achieving our dreams… after all, achieving your own personal weight-loss target could be the best present you give yourself this Christmas!”

HEALTH

Immunisation against Flu Flu can spread

quickly through droplets created when someone with the infection sneezes or coughs, or by touching a surface where the virus has been deposited. For otherwise healthy people, flu can be unpleasant but normally clears up within a week. But complications of flu can be serious and cause a number of deaths each year in the UK. For those at risk of developing serious complications from seasonal flu, vaccination is recommended and is available to them free of charge on the NHS; this includes anyone over 65, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions, such as long term respiratory disease or heart disease. It is important to have the jab annually, ideally between September and November. Protection from vaccines reduces over

change, so new flu vaccine is produced each year. There are three types of flu virus - A,B and C, with most cases caused by types A and B. Each winter, mostly within a six to eight week period, a different strain of flu virus causes an outbreak affecting many people and this is referred to as seasonal flu. The viruses most likely to cause seasonal flu are identified in advance each year by the World Health Organisation and then vaccines are made to match them as closely as possible. Side effects of the vaccine are usually very minor, such a slight soreness at the injection site, a mildly raised temperature and aching muscles. The immunisation does not contain any living flu virus and so it cannot cause flu, or any other infections. The flu vaccine can save lives. If you are at risk contact your GP to book your vaccination.

You don't have to be at risk to protect yourself against flu this winter! The Boots Winter Flu Jab Service is here to help. If you are 16 or over, you can book an appointment for a flu vaccination. The benefits of having a flu vaccination: To help you stay on top of your health during the winter. To help prevent the spread of infection among your family, friends and work colleagues. Even if you had a flu vaccination last year, you may consider having it again this year to protect yourself against the viruses most likely to be responsible for causing most cases of flu this winter, including the H1N1 (swine flu) virus.H

How much does the Boots Winter Flu Jab Service cost? The service costs ÂŁ12.99 but currently includes the following, at no extra cost: Boots Pharmaceuticals Cold Defence Nasal Spray, worth ÂŁ6.99* Boots Pharmaceuticals Vitamin C 200mg tablets (30s), worth 99p* The Winter Flu Jab Service is free if your company has provided you with a prepaid Corporate Flu Voucher (this does not include the two additional items mentioned above). *Subject to availability

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gut disorder. A functional disorder means there is a problem with the function of a part of the body, but there is no abnormality in the structure. Up to 1 in 5 people in the UK develop IBS at some stage in their life and it is known to affect twice as many women as men. The cause of IBS is not known but triggers include stress, diet, hormones and some medicines. Knowing what sets off your IBS can help you to age

Health & Wellness Coach manage your symptoms. Symptoms can include abdominal pains and cramping, often relieved by emptying the bowels. A change in bowel habits such as diarrhoea or constipation or both bloating & swelling of the stomach. Excessive wind and an urgent need to go the toilet. Less common symptoms in IBS are: headaches, belching, poor appetite, tiredness, muscle pain and heartburn.

Self Help If you have IBS, feeling tense, stressed, or angry can affect muscles in your bowels. Lots of people get cramps or 'butterflies' when they are nervous or upset. But if you have IBS, your bowels can be extra sensitive to even slightly bit of stress or anxiety. Your stomach is your second brain, so whatever goes on in „your head‟ also affects „your stomach‟. Keeping a diary may help you to recognise the triggers that bring on your symptoms, so you are able to manage them more effectively. Using techniques for dealing with stress such as meditation, yoga, breathing exercises are traditional ways. Other ways to release stress are making time for you; join a club, try something new ~ martial arts training is a great way to refocus and exert that internal stress externally. benefits, and along with IBS symptoms and Food Intolerance Testing is a great & quick way to discover what foods you are eating which are aggravating your symptoms. Food Intolerance testing highlights which foods you are either eating too much off (where you need to lower the levels of certain food products) foods which are causing „inflammation‟ within your digestive system (this is a bit like having a cut on your finger and getting lemon juice on it; it will sting very badly, the problem is not the lemon juice, the problem is the cut!) or whether you actually have a food intolerance (where your body will function much more efficiently without having this food product).

taking time to prepare healthy home cooked foods really does have a massive effect on your body, symptoms and health.

Knowing this information and following a program on the results brings about relief to your symptoms quickly and effectively. Sometimes you need to look at the way you are eating your food; do you eat on the go, whilst doing other things such as watching the TV, answering e-mails? It can really help if you sit and focus on what you are eating and really chew your food. Chewing is the first process in breaking down the food and releasing enzymes to help are bodies break down the food we are eating. A Unique Opportunity To In Josh Day is a professional paint sprayer and motorcycle racer from Cirencester, Gloucester. Josh competed in the North Gloucester Road Racing Club Road Racing Championships in the 2007 season. This was his first ever race season no motocross, no mini moto… No prior race experience whatsoever. Despite this, he finished 13th in the Open 600cc Championship and 2nd in the Open Novice Championship. These results were achieved on his standard Yamaha R6 road bike, with the only modifications to race fairings and tyres. Josh was determined to progress quickly in his racing career and so, still on his 2006 Yamaha R6 bike, he entered himself for the first few rounds of the 2008 season Metzeler National Superstock 600 Championship. His plan was simple; see what level he could jump to during the first few rounds of the national championships, then complete the year gaining valuable experience.

But plans sometimes go awry. What actually happened would be beyond even Josh‟s wildest dreams. A number of top ten finishes, along with a podium finish at Oulton Park meant that Josh finished the season in 13th position overall. Commitment, Drive & Passion As well as riding in the Metzeler National Superstock 600 Championship in 2008, Josh was also making appearances at club level with NG Road Racing. The Open 600cc Championship was something Josh was really keen to win, but other commitments allowed him only to compete in 8 races. Even knowing that he couldn‟t complete the season, his passion and natural talent for racing shone through, and he came out with four victories, and three 2nd positions. He finished the season 3rd in the final championship standings. 2009 saw Josh again entered into the extremely competitive Metzeler National Superstock 600 Championship. With Successful pre-season testing, the outlook was promising. Brands Hatch played host to the first race of the season, and Josh qualified well,

nvest In A Future Champion only to be penalised with a ride through penalty for a jump-start while running in second place. The final results revealed that Josh still managed to finish in 13th position from 38 riders. Well aware that he had the pace to run at the front of the race, in the next round at Oulton Park, Josh was running in 3rd position only to have his race cut short after being taken out of the race by another rider on the first lap. The next round took him back to Donington Park where illness hampered his winning chances, he still managed to secure 8th position. A Test Of Dedication Over the next few rounds his dedication was put to the test. Due to technical problems he missed the next three rounds. This meant he was unable to secure any valuable points and make headway on the overall placing. Racing fit, Josh returned to Croft and it was obvious that he was aiming to win both points and his confidence back. This he did by coming 12th, and by Silverstone he was running at the front again, and finished the race in an unbelievable 6th place.

Champion & Record Breaker Still passionate about road racing, and still dreaming of winning the NG Road Racing 600 Championships, Josh juggled and coordinated all his other race commitments and managed to compete in 12 out of the 14 rounds during the 2009 season. It paid off. With an impressive 11 wins, Josh took the title for the 600 Championship 2009. Josh entered the 2010 Metzeler National Superstock 600 Championship. It was undoubtedly Joshâ€&#x;s year. Seven pole positions, 3 wins and breaking two lap records at both Snetterton and Thruxton this was just the start. Some races saw him leading with over 9.8 seconds over the rest of the field and at the final round at Oulton Park, Josh finally secured victory and took the Championship title. Today Josh still holds the fastest ever lap ever recorded for Brands Hatch, Thruxton and Knockhill circuits. Although these times were set in qualifying and not in the race. 2011 was to be a whole new adventure for Josh. He said hello to a whole new race championship.

Josh entered the 2011 MCE British Superbike Series, riding an Evo Kawasaki ZX1DRR. Although he hadn‟t ridden a 1000cc machine before , Josh‟s natural talent was still evident. Unfortunately, Josh‟s team were experiencing technical issues at the start of the Evo Championship, which meant he had to sit out the first 2 races. Riding Out The Rough With The Smooth Undaunted, Josh waited until the team had resolved the issues. At Oulton Park Josh managed a top 3 Evo finish. But his bad luck didn't stop there. With a nail biting four rounds to go, the team he was riding for collapsed. Josh only managed 9 races out of the 26 available. With 23 riders in the series, this meant his overall standing was 15th.and now without a team. It is a testament to Josh‟s talent, ability and determination, that within days he was presented with and took up a rare opportunity to fill in for an injured rider in another team at the British Supersport Championship.

This challenge covered the final 4 meetings of the season and included getting used to a brand new bike. With only a day for testing at Mallory Park, it was straight over to Cadwell Park, where Josh got to grips with the Supersport bike. The 2nd outing on the bike was back at Donington Park and Josh skilfully managed to put the bike on the front row. Even though he had only competed in 4 rounds of the season, he finished the British Supersport Championship against 36 riders in 21st position. New Adventures, New Bike In 2013 Josh was chosen to ride the Be Wiser Kawasaki ZX1OR in the National Superstock 1000 Series. The Be Wiser Kawasaki Team have been around the Superbike paddock for several years with great success. The British Superbike organisers for this year banned all foreign testing, which many

teams took advantage of because of the guaranteed weather. The organisers deemed the foreign circuits too dangerous and too costly for a lot of the teams involved. This obviously had an effect on the 2013 testing programme, and Josh like many other riders who had joined new teams with new bikes, meant they would start the season with limited valuable pre-season track time. With approximately 60 riders trying to qualify for only 30 grid positions, things were very close and lots of riders were unable to make qualification. Josh, however qualified in all of the 12 rounds for the season. He had some great top 10 results, including a 4th position at Donington Park with the World Superbike Series. Josh finished the 2013 season at Brands Hatch with a fastest second day qualification 1st. He was also fastest in free practice and managed to finish the race in 6th place. Josh has now formed a new racing team in partnership with Bristol‟s Ruby Scaffolding and is excited to announce the new team „Ruby Racing‟.
