The following actions and processes that the operator can manage with the diagnostic tool:

Alignment/Tyres Servicing The introduction of electronics for controlling the vehicle's set-up requires an alignment between the electronics and the mechanics of the vehicle, which is achieved only by interacting with the electronic control units installed on the vehicle itself. If this is not done, there could be malfunctioning also in “connected� systems. Depending on the kind of vehicle and its equipment, when performing the wheel alignment it is necessary to interact with the vehicle's electronic system before starting the mechanical adjustments. The vehicles with these needs are specially those with the following electronic systems: - Steer by wire one or more vehicle's axles are driven electronically and not mechanically during the steering. It is necessary to reset first the electronics and then perform the mechanical adjustments of the characteristic angles. - Active suspensions the height of the body from the ground is controlled electronically. It is important to place the vehicle at the correct height before performing the mechanical adjustment of the characteristic angles or extracting the height value mentioned in the control unit to program in the wheel alignment software. - Electric Parking Brake parking brake engages automatically when the vehicle is switched off in order to inhibit the vehicle from moving. One must disengage the brake before performing the run-out compensation. At the end of the mechanical wheel-alignment adjustments, it is necessary to perform the following operations - Adjustment of steering angle/esp is compulsory in case of mechanical adjustment on the front axleor of the steering or of the front axle. The lack of adjustment could involve malfunctioning for ESP, POWERSTEERING. - Checking the characteristic angles for different heights of the vehicle from the ground (vehicle with active suspensions).

After tyre servicing, it is necessary to interact with the vehicle's electronic system in the following cases: - Vehicle with TPMS sensors (active type): replacement of new sensors or tyre rotation. Reprogramming the control units on the vehicle. - Vehicle with TPMS sensors (passive type): modification of tyre pressure, replacement of tyres or wheel rims, tyre rotation: the control unit must “adapt� to the new geometrical dimensions of the tyres. - Changing the tyre and/or wheel rim dimensions: ESP control units, BODY COMPUTER, may not work properly. Coupon Operations - Scheduled Maintenance The vehicle's electronic system is involved also in the maintenance management, in terms of informing the driver when it is necessary to service the car, of checking the wear-and-tear components (oil, brakes, filters) and of unlocking the mechanical parts otherwise not accessible. For clarity's sake during the acceptance stage, before starting servicing the vehicle, it is necessary to check the condition of the engine in order to decide with the customer which special repairs shall be performed. During servicing it could be necessary to interact with the electronic system to access the brake pads in a safe condition or for setting the braking torque (vehicles with electronic parking brake). At the end of the servicing, the vehicles with the following systems and programming must be adjusted as follows: - Service Reset: for setting the Km/dd of the next service coupon (it is necessary in approx. 90% of the vehicles on the road). - Signalling the actual replacement of the engine oil (vehicles with FAP/DPF) - Signalling the actual replacement of the brake pads (vehicles with electronic control of the brake pad wear). - Signalling the actual replacement of the air filter (vehicles with electronic control of the air filter wear).

SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE - INSPECTION Acceptance
To be performed with the customer in order to determine the operations to carry out in addition to the scheduled maintenance. It prepares a “Vehicle Acceptance Report” to be handed in to the customer together with the estimate of costs.
Delivery
To be done before delivering the vehicle to the customer, after a scheduled maintenance. The following operations are carried out automatically: Service Reset, Brake Warning Light Reset, Oil Quality Reset (if FAP is present), Engine Check. It generates also a “Vehicle Delivery” report to be handed in to the customer as a proof of the servicing performed.
Service Reset
To be done every time one must switch off the Service Warning Light and set the new Km/dd interval for the next servicing.
Oil Replacement
To execute every time is necessary a Oil Replacement according to the Maintenance Plan of the vehicle.
Additive diesel-fuel Replacement
To execute in case of Additive Diesel-Fuel Replacement on Vehicles provided with FAP.
Brake pad replacement

Special Maintenance Even for small special maintenance operations it is necessary to interact with the vehicle's electronic system. Before repairing the vehicle: - Engine check (all the vehicles with Engine Control Unit). Can be necessary to check any engine fault During repairing: - Regenerating an anti-particulate filter (vehicle with FAP/DPF). - Performing the Brake System Bleeding (vehicles with ABS). - Restarting the Air Conditioning system (vehicles with electronic control of the A/C system). Estimating repairing costs/Servicing/Vehicle delivery There are many packages capable of estimating the cost of damaged bodywork, but they cannot estimate the cost of repairing the electronic parts of the vehicle, since it requires information on the malfunctioning mechatronical components. Electronics have been present in the workshop for more than twenty years and the electronic diagnosis has become the essential tool for the repairer. We have gone from the simple injection control unit at the beginning of the 90's, to having more than 50 control units installed on the same vehicle. A “superficial” tool capable of merely reading/deleting errors or reading a few parameters ON I of the Engine Control Unit is not enough. The engine was the first mechanical part to be equipped with an electronic control unit from the beginning of the 90's. ABS/ASR/ESP Diagnosis ABS was probably the first electronically controlled safety system introduced on vehicles. Recent technological progress has introduced also the stability and antiskid control that from 2007 are fitted standard on all medium-top class vehicle. Also for this kind of control unit, the diagnosis functions have grown together with the increasing complexity of the system. Other electronic control units Recently, new increasingly sophisticated systems have been fitted on the vehicle. In particular it is worth mentioning: - Electronic parking brake: the old type of handbrake has been replaced by a push button which controls an actuator which automatically stops the vehicle when it is switched off. The introduction of this system requires test equipment capable of safely accessing the brake pads, programming the braking power, unlocking the wheels when the vehicle is at standstill, checking the state of the push button for disabling the parking brake, etc. - Suspensions, steer by wire and traction control: the real technical progress of the last few years (besides the hybrid vehicles) is the introduction of vehicle control and management systems during the different running conditions. Diagnosis is therefore required commands for checking the height of the body measured by the control unit, height sensor programming, moving suspensions, wheel motion actuation, wheel and steering position measurement, electronic ION alignment of the assembly wheel/steering/suspensions, etc.. The increasingly demanding request for reducing polluting emissions and the growing demand for safety and comfort systems has lead to a rise in the number of electronic control units fitted on a vehicle. In addition to the engine control unit, now there are also systems similar to the car ones (body computer, dashboard, light management, automatic transmission, airbag, tpms, air conditioning system, etc.) to be added to those systems which are essential for a truck but not for a car (suspensions, retarder, heater, ad-blue, tachograph, etc.). It is clear that there is a need for complete diagnostic tools which enable to operate at 360째 on the entire electronics of the vehicle.
TRUCK - TRAILER - SEMI-TRAILER
Engine diagnosis The engine was the first mechanical part to be equipped with an electronic control unit from the beginning of the 90's. From the first "blink code" systems which signalled with the lamp flashing on the dashboard, to the error codes reading through a serial connector, up to the highly complex diagnosis of a modern engine. Nowadays it is necessary to have an engine diagnosis as complete as possible that enables to: - Read and delete error codes - Read the technical parameters of the engine which are necessary for a correct diagnosis, which go from the typical "rpm", "temperature", "lambda sensors", "accelerator pedal position", "measured air flow", "cylinder correction" values and "valve opening time", up to the most recent parameters introduced for controlling emissions such as "Nox temperature sensor", etc. - Display the engine conditions, such as immobilizer state, clutch and brake pedal position, inhibition state, terminal +15 and +30 condition, etc. - Enable parts such as fans, injectors, pump relays, pre-heating relays, etc. - Disable the cylinders - Code replaced parts such as injectors
ABS/EBS diagnosis The stability control and braking system management is absolutely essential in a truck. In particular it is useful to: - Read and delete error codes - Read the technical parameters which are necessary for a correct diagnosis: "wheel speed", "steering angle", "yaw angle", "lateral acceleration", "brake pedal pressure", "accelerator pedal", "tyre rolling circumference", "braking pressure on different axles", etc. - Display the conditions such as steering angle setting, pump relays, brake switch state, etc. - Enable the different solenoid valves, the brake transducer, etc..

Suspensions The suspensions are extremely important for the truck since they control the correct body height, depending on the various loads. It is necessary to: - Read and delete error codes - Read the technical parameters: suspension system circuit infeed pressure, nominal and actual levels of the axles, axle adjustment levels, etc. - Check the condition of the suspension remote control, level sensor state, axle solenoid valve condition, etc. - Enable the central drive axles and left and right drive axles, bleed valves, etc. - Adjust the suspension level.
Body Computer/Dashboard Diagnosis

Due to the introduction of many electronic control units the vehicle had to be equipped with a network "server" for managing the entire system. Depending on the brands and the models, the Body Computer or the Dashboard perform this function, in addition of the typical functions such as key and remote control management, lights, dashboard, etc. In order to work with these systems it is necessary to:

Other control units Recently new increasingly sophisticated systems have been fitted on the vehicle. In particular it is worth mentioning: - Retarder: driving aid braking system which allows to save up to 50% of the disc consumption. The diagnosis enables to read/delete errors and read technical parameters, such as the nominal and actual braking torque, retarder fluid and coolant temperature, etc. - Tachograph: system for measuring the time/km driven, compulsory by law. The diagnosis enables to read/delete errors and read technical parameters, such as tyre size setting, stop time, driving time, the ratio, etc. - Infointarteiment: from the simple after-market fitted radio, we have passed to highly sophisticated information and entertainment systems, such as GPS, cd/dvd reproduction, hitech hi-fi systems, MP3 readers, bluetooth connection with mobile phones. Test equipment shall connect to these systems in order to set them up and repair them if necessary. - Tyre pressure control: checking the tyre electronically is surely one of the challenges of the future. As a matter of fact beside the "mechanical" technical progress of tyres and wheel rims of the last years, for the time being there is not yet any active safety system for the tyre. The first step in this direction are the pressure sensors fitted inside the tyre which monitor in real time its pressure. For diagnosing this system it is necessary to visualize the pressure and temperature data measured by the sensors, programming the replaced sensors, enable the transmission antennas, etc. - Light management: the introduction of Xenon lights and directional lights has turned the management of a simple light bulb into a complex system in which, through diagnosis, it is possible to check the absorbed power, check the light emission for different vehicle speed rates, enable the light motion, etc. - Management of central locking system, window lifter, lights and seats: all the actuators fitted inside the vehicle are controlled by an electronic control unit, which enables to make a diagnosis of the component, enable the motion or the starting, check the state of the control for starting/moving these devices, adjusting if necessary due to the replacement of some part, etc.

Electronics have become a reality also for motorcycles, thus electronic diagnosis has become indispensable for the repairer. Beside the simple injection control unit, now a motorcycle may be equipped with ABS, dashboard, light control, up to the latest HandsFree, Tpms and Traction control. Moreover, an efficient "road test" system is a must, when it is not possible to make diagnostics on a still vehicle,since it enables to record data when the vehicle is running on the road. The test equipment for electronics must be integrated with the gas analysis function and the electric signal measuring module.
