the contemporary art piece, “Equilibrium” by Gino de Dominicis, was chosen because it represents a precise balance: a summation of the complex mathematical and visually rational perfection that Antique artists sought in their work. the intervention creates equilibrium with the above architecture; if the dome and ambulatory spaces form hierarchies of light, then the reflected ‘pit’ utilizes the same principles to create hierarchies of dark. the art and the intervention ties in the delicate balance between life and death found within the Mausoleo di S Costanza.

a unique booth design for the 2009 HK book fair, reflecting the heritage of reading. HKBF brought in over 900000 visitors to over 500 exhibitions. a text bubble screen for perusers to input opinions. lighting fixture comprising of book covers constructed by hand. a mural of historic children, with matching benches, for relief and a reliving of history.
this design was selected by numerous HK magazines as the best booth at HKBF/09
following an office charrette for the redesign of a building lobby I came back with my own proposition: this scheme was selected. the flowing ribbons references the building’s roots as a fabric plant: moments for seating, ripples for lighting, and reveals for heating. the 96 stretches through the space, creating a focal point outside, and a strong icon for the building.

XY block studio
designing a cultural center with office support in downtown toronto. this building takes the everyday office tower and flips it onto its side. the first broken shards that consists of the first floor form a sheltered interior courtyard that draws in visitors and users before dispersing to the various program blocks.
utilizing different facade materials, a visual language distinguishes between program groups: cor-ten steel - art, opaque facade - public, and fritted curtain walls - office.

an avant-garde fashion runway for an industry where cutting edge aesthetics push the boundaries of style and taste; weightless structures allow for quiet backdrop to loud entrances. inspired by bubbles in a stream, a study of tension in threads and fabrics leads to the development of fabric tensegrity; a perfect cover for a fashion center. evolving models reflect the progressive understanding and creative utilization of tensegrity concepts: tensegrity simplexes evolve into complex fabric-based tensegrity networks.
many iterations of tensile model studies act as a development of fabric concepts and a foray into potential creative architectural implementations. utilizing this concept as a skin and capitalizing on its large open forms, the tensegrity bubbles act as a shelter and a frame, but neither confines nor sequesters the platform or performance.

INK island studio
the hidden moonlit chapel, overlooking the cemetery whilst straddling earth and water, expresses a sudden disconnect that references the bounds of life and death. the journey. the revelation. the experience. the departure. the chapel expresses the concept of duality and flow. LEDs on the trees create a temporary path. as one traverses through the trees, one comes upon a sudden threshold: the cliff above the waters. one descends into the chapel, which, referencing the rippling lake, is partitioned by a soft wave. the climax is the framed view of the cemetary and the moon; a visual connection to the memory of the dead.

a solarparksouth competition entry, a proposed conversion of a disused highway: a viral concept for a green park. akin to growing organisms, the path will overtake the existing road over time, gathering and housing new technologies as it expands and reintegrates the natural landscape; the �degredation� of the highway. vegetation will overtake structure, and the return of wildlife will be promoted.

five nodes along the path will be developed to consume the bare asphalt: wind power in the canyons – integrated under the Favazzina bridge and in a new hotel structure on Sfalassa bridge; solar energy at the two highest points – a chapel incorporating a heliostat tower and an elaborate PV canopy; and at the lowest point (near Scilla), a geothermal campsite.

HILLSmuseum studio
a museum of the Tiber River along the river’s edge began with the development of a masterplan which fused the broken urban fabric and the flowing natural hills. the site, a wasteland, was converted into a park, creating a landscape split by meandering paths, and an urban grid softened by a natural touch. urban armatures are utilized to root activities, but there is an emphasis on meandering rather than a prescribed pathway. the museum sprouts from the ruins of the Arsenale.

the plans interweave the fluid systems developed in the masterplan into a finer grain for the museum, creating, in both landscape and subscape, implied paths of travel, and significant nodes of rest.
the monad, a Baroque concept proposed by Leibniz, is a self-contained and finite world – a fragment of a larger, potentially infinite cosmos. there is a pure interiority, whereby an explosion of activity creates an internal pressure exuding potential energy. this concept questions the meaning of surface, and depicts the exterior as a subtle reaction to the power of the interior.
temporary exhibits and galleries at the periphery draw visitors towards the entrance hub, guiding towards the theatre, the hills, or the museum. through articulation of the folded section and display techniques, the museum is derived from perspectives and interior experiential qualities rather than a strong exterior form or plan. this creates a subtle landscape structure, but a compelling and meandering procession : interesting spatial qualities between exhibition halls, which are not separated by partitions, but by levels and compression.

a palette of exhibition types was developed to accommodate the programs while assimilating the aesthetics and forms of the HILLS and the context. HALL01 - iconography: dissected hillscapes and hidden moments. HALL02 - ecological timeline: sectional topography of the Arsenale and divided paths. HALL03 - the river and the city: the datum of the city and river cuts. HALL04 - the future: dark and light, projects and beyond.
