Spreading Good News

Lord God, you have brightened this night with the risen Christ. Quicken the spirit of sonship in your Church; renew us in mind and body to give you whole-hearted service.

My dear SRE Teachers and Assistants,

YEAR OF GRACE

What a wonderful weekend we’ve experienced with all the Easter ceremonies. We are fortunate to be able to attend each of the liturgies as there are many families who don’t have this privilege. Now the ceremonies are over we must continue to pray for the Bishop and Priests of our Diocese during the Easter Season. They continue to give of themselves and their time for us all in the Parishes and I’m sure the best we can do for them is to pray for them and the decisions they make as they go about their many duties. Please continue to pray for the many sick in our parishes and don’t forget to pray for yourselves as you begin a new term and preparation of your lessons. This term the Catholic children will be preparing to receive their First Holy Communion. Keep those families in your prayers as they walk with their children in the preparation. I thank you for your dedication to this ministry and consistent attendance to the classes. What a wonderful example you are to the parishioners of your parish. Our numbers are very much down on the last couple of years, so each of you need to keep talking about what you do in the State schools. And of course your strongest weapon is prayer. I prayer for each of you that the Holy Spirit will send labourers to assist you in this important ministry. I’ll be taking leave from the 21st May until the middle of June.

LOGO There is no one symbol or message that the Year of Grace logo is intended to convey. It is a bright and stylish image which, in looking at it, has many significant symbols and connections that can be drawn: • The cross • The sun • A circle that represents the infinity of God • The halo incorporating a cross that surrounds the head of Jesus in Eastern conography • The host used at Mass • The monstrance used in Eucharistic adoration • A link with the artistic tradition of our Indigenous people • The earthen, ochre colours of Australia • A diversity of peoples and cultures, gathered into one community • A star-burst • Light There may be other ways in which the logo speaks to people. www.bathurst.catholic.org.au

CODE OF CONDUCT Interaction with Student Personal interaction between SRE Teachers/Assistants and students outside of school and school related activities can be problematic and may lead to allegations against SRE Teachers/Assistants. SRE Teachers/Assistants must be conscious that their position places extra obligations on them and should follow the policy and procedures as set by their school and Church. In schools where there are many relationships between SRE Teachers/Assistants and student’s families, SRE Teachers/Assistants must be aware of the limitations placed on these relationships by the Code of Conduct.

Inappropriate Behaviours may include: Visiting students at their home; Inviting students to visit the SRE Teacher/Assistants home; Making telephone calls of a personal nature to students; Sending emails of a personal nature to students; Sending sms (text) messages to students

Should any of these actions be taken without the prior knowledge and consent of Parent/Guardian. PROCLAIM 2012 Proclaim 2012 conference is organised on behalf of the Australian Catholics Bishops Conference by the National Office for Evangelisation and Catholic Mission. It is a conference on the New Evangelisation, a key event in the Year of Grace. Type proclaim 2012 to take you to the website.

NCCD I attended the second video conference link up with four Dioceses in Queensland, three in Victoria and five in New South Wales for the National Confraternity of Christian Doctrine at Newcastle. A wonderful experience that brought us together to listen to Sister Anne Surtees OSU. Sister Anne is from the Centre for Multicultural Pastoral Care (CMPC) Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane. Her question to us “How do I remain effective in ministry?” and “How do people perceive me in ministry?” Two challenging questions!

WALKING WITH JESUS – PATHWAYS OF DISCIPLESHIP Diocese of Broken Bay, 2006 The story of Easter continues - Jesus Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost. Jesus journeys with us as our companion. The Spirit within us. Mary as an ordinary girl. The Hail Mary. Mary as a woman of faith, the Mother of Jesus, and the Church.

CHRIST OUR LIGHT AND LIFE Archdiocese of Sydney, 2010 The Easter story continues – Jesus Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost. The Church grows and through the Spirit, people take the message to many parts of the world.

She then proceeded to work through strategies – Integrational approach to all ministries, communication in ministry and recruitment strategies. She placed importance on personal Prayer. A productive gathering!

NSW PARLIMENTARY INQUIRY Catholic providers of SRE across NSW were invited to make submission to the inquiry into Ethics classes. Executive members of the Catholic Conference of Religious Educators in State Schools (CCRESS) made that submission on behalf of the eleven Dioceses across New South Wales. Essentially we maintain there is little point in removing Ethics classes as they have had little or no impact on SRE classes. It is recommended that the Minister for Education have oversight of Ethics classes and programs. Otherwise we advocate for a spirit of cooperation and coexistence. Further it has been asserted that it would be unfair for providers of Ethics to receive funding from either the Government or the NSW Parents and Citizens Association. The Parliamentary Committee was reminded that Churches have been providing SRE classes for over 100 years at no cost. An endeavour we are more than happy to continue.

She also said that S.R.E had stood the test of time and that it had been strengthened by multicultural and interfaith traditions in our communities.
