Our main feature in this month’s issue is a unique find in Australian decimal Specimen notes, comprising an official booklet housing twelve Specimen overprinted banknotes all bearing the signatures of Johnston / Fraser and accompanied with a letter of recognition to J. James from the Governor of The Reserve Bank of Australia. This booklet is a previously unknown presentation and its entry onto the market for the first time marks a significant occasion in Australian numismatics. The Rare Coin Company is extremely proud to have the opportunity to offer this highly important numismatic acquisition to our valued clients and we are extremely excited about its future potential on the investment scene. See full details of this exclusive offer on pages 10 and 11. The Specimen note booklet is also part of our main feature on Australian decimal Specimen notes, with emphasis on their rarity and strong historical market performance. Decimal Specimens have achieved impressive growth in recent decades as buyers have turned their attention to the limited availability and significance of this area of the market. Today, Specimen issues continue to represent excellent growth potential to astute collectors when available, maintaining their dominant position in Australia’s numismatic investment arena. We have acquired a choice selection of very rare Specimens in various types to offer this month and recommend this area of the market as a most worthwhile proposition for buyers seriously looking to add diversity and potential to their portfolio.

The notable rarity and condition of this banknote domiciled in Adelaide is sure to entice connoisseurs of distinctive colonial rarities. Banknotes issued by private trading banks between 1817 and 1910 were intended to be expendable, so it seems amazing that any could have survived in such fine condition after 136 years.

Issued by a private trading bank that was short-lived due to the 1893 banking crisis, this beautifully preserved ‘specimen’ presents investors and collectors with a tremendous tangible asset and exclusive ownership of an item of immense historical and numismatic importance.

Especially printed in very low numbers as an example of a note issue, ‘Specimens’ usually ended up in note printing archives, but on very rare occasions were presented to VIP’s and those involved in the note’s production. It was only through this presentation that they were made available to the collecting public, which makes their rare appearance on today’s market so momentous.

Rare Quality Australian Pre-Decimal Banknotes Need No Introduction with Buyers in Today’s Climate!

Magnificent Australian Commonwealth Coins Offer A Sound Proposition in the Finest Quality Rarities

While buyers of Pre-Decimal banknotes may feel disappointed at missing opportunities to secure premium quality examples, it’s a well known fact that demand will always far exceed availability at any given time. On a positive note though, this bittersweet scenario in this area of the numismatic market is precisely the key to it’s ongoing success in the price performance arena.

Proof and premium quality Pre-Decimal coins evoke passion and anticipation amongst keen buyers lured by their inherent rarity, investment appeal, craftsmanship and history. Struck from special dies, Proofs outshine even the best circulation strikes. Prior to 1955 only a very select number were struck for presentation to VIP’s or dignitaries. So few were struck that when they appear on today’s market they achieve compelling results and swiftly vanish into private hands.

A Very Rare Find Australian Pre-Decimal banknotes in Uncirculated grade and consecutive runs attract premium prices due to their considerable rarity, superior state of preservation, investment appeal and collectability. Ten Shilling notes of the Legal Tender series 1933 to 1938 were smaller than previous issues, making them easier to distinguish from other denominations.

Very Rare to Acquire in Pairs The fact that these Pre-Decimal Star (replacement) notes also bear last prefixes, makes them especially rare and prized in this superior quality.

An Extremely Rare Investment Prospect ~ Estimated Only Two Examples Known The large size and weight and elaborate design detail make the Australian Florin collectable in almost all grades and one of the most popular silver Pre-Decimal coins to acquire. To find a Florin in exquisite near Fleur De Coin (FDC) grade is nothing short of astounding, representing a rare investment opportunity. Australian florins were minted from 1910 until 1963. For the first seven years they were minted in London and then mostly in Australia at either the Melbourne or Sydney Mints. The only exceptions to this were during World War II when some were minted in the USA. Like all other predecimal Australian coinage the florin was based on the silver standard. It was minted in 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper from 1910 until 1945. In 1946 the coins were debased to 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, and 5% zinc due to Australia needing to pay off its’ huge debts incurred during the war. The George VI florin was minted from 1938 to 1952. In 1938 both the reverse and obverse design changed to feature George VI without a crown and the Australian Coat of Arms with a more stylised kangaroo, emu, and wattle sprigs.

Issued by the Reserve Bank of Australia, they were amongst the final of the pre-decimal stars to be released prior to the introduction of decimal currency in 1966.

A Small Coin with a Big Future For intuitive buyers with a keen eye for detail, Australia’s Threepence presented in Proof production quality is an absolute must have. Acquiring a quality threepence is significant when you consider its small size tended to cause production problems. Early proofs, produced using polished dies, were frequently struck multiple times to ensure that the full design became visible.

Australia’s Paper Decimal Specimen Banknotes ~ Fast Following in the Success of their Pre-Decimal Counterparts! Track the price performance of Decimal Specimens and it soon becomes apparent why these highly prized and valuable banknotes spark such spirited competition amongst today’s buyers. With growth rates averaging anywhere up to 23%* over recent decades, they have consistently proved their investment potential. We are delighted to present these exceptional examples spanning three decades from the very beginnings of Australia’s decimal currency in 1966 to 1984, just four years before the first Polymer banknotes were issued. Demand for uncirculated paper notes rapidly rose after Polymers were introduced, which makes them a very scarce and treasured item to secure today.

Printed in Numbers Less than 100, these Polymer Specimens are a Hot Target for Buyers of the Rarest and Finest! Polymer banknotes in superlative condition are a highly venerated acquisition. Specimen issues with Reserve Bank of Australia presentation letters are particularly rare, underpinning their investment appeal. Polymers are interesting to collect as they incorporate the year of printing within the banknote’s serial number (post 1992), which enables collectors to acquire notes based on their production year.

The Australian Polymer banknote series forms an integral part of the country’s currency and general history, demonstrating key advances in technology that have been embraced by note printers world-wide. The carefully preserved Type Four Specimen banknotes offered here are presented in a special commemorative folder, further highlighting their numismatic importance and destiny as high flying performers in the world of Specimen banknotes.

Australia Leads the World in Banknote Technology Developed by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the polymer note was the world’s first ‘plastic’ banknote. It was designed to improve the security and durability of the country’s currency. The first polymer banknote was a special $10 bicentennial issue released into general circulation in January 1988. Total conversion to polymer banknotes was completed in 1996 when Australia became

Housed in Presentation Folder with Letter of Recognition to Clea Gazzard

the first country to use a full set of circulating polymers. Banknotes were previously made from rag-based paper. Polymer notes are nonfibrous and made from polymer biaxial orientated polypropylene, which significantly enhances their durability, quality, cost-effectiveness and security. Many advanced security features not feasible with paper money have been perfected on polymers, making counterfeiting virtually impossible due to the cost and superior technology.

Twelve Unique Specimen Notes, One Unique Presentation, One Sensational Investment Opportunity!

Housed in an informative Presentation Book with an exclusive letter from B.W Fraser

The emergence of this Decimal Specimen note presentation for private sale is a momentous and extremely exciting occasion in Australian numismatics and one which The Rare Coin Company is justly proud to exclusively offer to valued clients for the very first time! Unique to Australian Numismatics As a previously unknown presentation, we believe this unique Specimen set holds an enormously prosperous future for the buyer looking for extraordinary blue chip opportunities in rare and prestigious Australian banknotes. The set is the only known Specimen set bearing the Johnston / Fraser signature combination, plus the unique use of notes bearing serial numbers from a normal print run rather than the customary zero serials solely reserved for Specimen issues. The Specimen overprint is the extremely rare Type Four version, printed commercially on either side of the note in red ink. The official letter and

presentation booklet from The Reserve Bank of Australia gives prominence to this significant numismatic find, offering the investor an unparalleled proposition in Australia’s rare and prized decimal specimen banknotes series.

Quality Specimens are Strong Performers Specimens, examples of a given issue, were used for presentation purposes and as reference material. Few were printed and because generally they have not circulated, are of superior quality, leading to significant rises in value and demand. Australia’s transition to polymer banknotes greatly increased the investment potential of this banknote area. Recent auctions have revealed some top results for premium decimal items, including a record price for the historic TAA Robbery Decimal Type Three Specimen note set. For many years, the Australian banknote series was undervalued and largely ignored by traditional numismatists but that has changed dramatically in recent decades. Decimal Specimens are now revered as blue chip numismatic investments.

1985 Specimen Set Signatories Bernie William Fraser Backed by a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in economics, Fraser joined the National Development Department in 1961 and moved to the Treasury in 1962. After various finance positions he was appointed Secretary to the Treasury in 1984. Robert Alan Johnston Johnston joined the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in 1940. Apart from service in the RAAF, he remained with the bank until 1960, when he moved to the Reserve Bank of Australia. He also held various finance positions before being appointed Governor of the bank in 1982.
