‘The Union Bank of Australia Limited’ (1837-1951)
A Banknote of Great Signifiance
This London-based bank established one of its first Australian branches in Hobart in 1838 and eventually became the Union Bank of Australia Limited in 1880. During trading, it issued three note types in five denominations. The Type 2b displayed, featured several variations throughout its issue from 1861 until about 1881.
Issued from January to August 1933, this note is distinctive as it features a much thicker signature than commonly seen on notes of the time and formed part of a series that would herald the end of notes redeemable in gold and the introduction of legal tender.
There was strong demand for Union notes during the 1893 financial crisis as it was one of the few banks to survive the crash and continue trading. It merged with the Bank of Australasia in 1951, became the Australian and New Zealand Bank Limited and merged with the English Scottish and Australian Bank to become the ANZ Banking Group Limited in 1970. A fine example from one of Australia’s major “Imperial” banks.

‘Bank of South Australia’ (1837-1892) The purpose of this London-based bank was to pay and service employees of the South Australian Company and provide local banking facilities for migrants to the new colony by transferring their funds. As none existed in SA, the Company issued promissory notes of various denominations. A coin shortage in 1852 created further demand for fractional notes and more were issued until 1853. The bank would issue three note types in several denominations during the 1800’s.

Valuable Wartime Currency Australian wartime banknotes entered a new phase with the introduction of the Treasury series issued from 1913 to 1923. A Strategic Investment Choice
By 1842 it had separated from the SA Company and officially changed its name to Bank of SA. In 1884 it ventured into land speculation but large sums of money were lost and it was absorbed by The Union Bank in 1892.
Smaller, redesigned five-pound notes forming part of the Gold Bearing series of 1923 to 1933 were first issued in 1924 with several variations applied over the years. The new design proved a big saving. Six banknotes could be printed on one sheet instead of four, boosting production by 50% with limited cost increases.

Australian pre-decimal proofs are celebrated as having some of the lowest mintages in the entire series and are amongst the world’s rarest and most stunning coins. Prior to 1955, they were never meant for commercial purposes but kept as the best examples for individual mints, museums or for presentation purposes. From 1944 to 1950, the Perth and Melbourne Mints either took turns or shared in the production of the Queen Elizabeth II halfpenny and the Royal Mint, London assisted in 1951. Beyond this time, coins with either a ‘Y’ or ‘A’ mintmark were struck at the Perth Mint and all others, at the Melbourne Mint. Mint” design. Unique in the history of the British Empire, the design was completely different to that of the standard British issue and incorporated a distinctively Australian reverse design. It was the only time such licence was ever given to a Royal Mint branch in the colonies.
From 1871 to 1931, Imperial sovereigns and half sovereigns minted in Australia featured either the shield or St George designs on the reverse and were identical to those struck elsewhere, except for the distinctive “S”, “M” or “P” mintmark. Edward VII’s reign (1901-1910) saw
an abundance of sovereigns from all three mints. George V’s reign (1910-1936) resulted in dramatic changes, seeing the demise of the Australian gold series. Half sovereigns were officially last struck in 1920. Production of sovereigns ceased worldwide in 1931.
