Demand for choice quality coins and banknotes continues to hold up strong here in Australia’s market and in overseas numismatic markets also, as reported by many major international specialists and auction houses. Some very significant private collections have emerged onto world markets over the past several months, no doubt in part due to the impact of the recession which has forced some collectors to liquidate their prized possessions. It appears there are no shortage of buyers who are currently taking advantage of such opportunities to snap up the best quality pieces and are prepared to pay premium prices to obtain them, knowing that even in the current economic downturn, their investment is still a worthwhile nest egg for the future.

Prestigious Quartermaster Collection realises over $10 million at auction One of the most prominent gold coin collections ever assembled in Australia was recently offered at auction in Sydney on June 5th. Over 87% of the 308 lots in the sale were sold to private bidders and Australian and overseas dealers. The collection, proudly assembled by Mr Tom Hadley over 22 years, comprised complete sets of choice quality Australian

Influx of New Investors Boosts Demand for Pre Federation Specimens ~ A Safe, Secure and Rewarding Investment

Introducing the Rarest in the Paper Decimal Banknote series with less than 10 examples known in each Denomination!

The ability to incorporate rare banknotes into investment portfolios together with many new buyers entering the market looking for a safer, more secure and tangible investment, has resulted in exceptional demand for rare, quality Pre Federation banknotes. The prestige that comes with exclusive ownership of a historic item has also had a clear impact. Pre Federation Specimens are some of the rarest and most compelling performers in Australian banknote currency.

Opportunities to acquire early paper Decimal Specimen banknotes are rapidly declining as astute buyers realise their genuine scarcity, especially Type Two Specimens, the rarest of them all. This has contributed significantly to their notable price growth over the years and cemented their reputation as a highly popular area of numismatics. Therefore, these Type Two Specimens offer an exciting opportunity for buyers of important banknote issues.

‘Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Ltd’ (1834-1982) The history of the Bank is a diverse and fascinating one commencing in 1834. Struggling to survive in its early years as The Commercial Banking Company, branches were forced to close during the depression years of the 1840’s and two attempts to re-establish itself in Victoria had failed.

Distinctly different from the Type One, Three and Four paper Decimal Specimen notes which were issued in respective presentation booklets, the Type Two Specimens were issued as individual examples of each denomination only, which no doubt explains the reason they have become known as the scarcest issues in the paper Decimal Specimen series. Type Two Specimen notes only appear as individual pieces when available,

as complete sets are rarely known in the market place in these times. Demand has seen these rarities constantly rising in price, adding to the fever of excited buyers when opportunities appear. We are pleased to offer two of the finest examples currently available for buyers of this tantalising area of the market and as competition is certain to be strong, it would be wise to act quickly if you don’t want to miss this rare opportunity!

Another bank bearing the same name opened in 1848 however closed during the 1890’s financial crash, subsequently reopening as ‘The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited’. The Bank merged with the Bank of Victoria and National Bank of Australasia in 1981 becoming the National Commercial Banking Corporation of Australia Limited in 1982, later named National Australia Bank. This superb Specimen offers astute buying in one of the finest examples in this category.

The Bank of Adelaide commenced trading in 1865 and was very successful, initially confining all its business to South Australia. A branch was opened in London in 1890 and some time later the bank became represented in each state. Despite the 1890’s banking crisis when many banks collapsed, the Bank of Adelaide was one of the few that remained solid. The bank formed the Finance Corporation of Australia Limited in 1955 but heavy investment and land speculation, followed by a sudden drop in values, saw it absorbed by the ANZ in 1980 and registered as a limited liability company. This superb Specimen offers astute buying in one of the finest examples in its category.

Diversify and Build your Investment portfolio with High Quality Australian Commonwealth Pre Decimal Banknote Rarities As one of the numismatic market’s peak performers, Pre Decimal Commonwealth banknote rarities such as the striking examples presented here, have enticed smart investors and collectors for years and their popularity continues to burgeon. Increased scarcity and high demand has elevated their status to such a level that astute buyers are quick to act when they are presented for sale. Whether looking to venture into this exciting and profitable arena of investing for the first time, or ready to top up your existing numismatic portfolio or super fund, these banknotes will not disappoint.

Prized Australian Coins rarely seen in these Exceptionally High Grades Australia’s masters of minting have built an esteemed reputation for producing outstanding quality coins with perceptive investors world-wide quick to recognise the investment growth potential of rare, quality pieces. Their scarcity, craftsmanship, history and quality grades including Gem, one of the highest grade coins available, makes them highly desirable. To obtain such coins in slabbed form is indeed the ultimate prize. Each has been professionally graded and authenticated and individually slabbed in a specially designed perspex case for lifelong protection showcasing these beautiful pieces to their very finest advantage. The discovery of gold in New South Wales in 1851 led to the Sydney Mint branch opening with gold coins struck using dies sent from London. From 1871 to 1931, the coins made

A Snapshot of Australia’s Early Currency From Australia’s first gold sovereign and half sovereign issues minted at the newly established Sydney branch of the Royal Mint London in 1851 to the arrival of the first distinctively Australian coins in 1910 and Pre Decimal eras to follow, including George VI, the issues have been nothing short of amazing.

1939 George VI Slabbed Set of Seven Choice Quality Coins Forming part of the Gold Bearing Series of 1913 to 1933 and redeemable in gold, the one pound note was issued from 1923 with minor variations until replaced by ‘legal tender’ notes. There are two distinct note variations appearing with or without the “TS Harrison Australian Note Printer” wording, possibly caused by the use of old printing plates.

No notes contain the signature of Sir Denison Miller, as he died in office before they were released.

Kell replaced him and the title changed to “Governor, Commonwealth Bank of Australia”. Oddly, on some later issues the former title “Chairman of Directors, Note Issue Department” appeared due to an old batch of notes being used up to save on costs. Opportunities in Very Top Quality Pre Decimal Banknotes Very Rare in Consecutive Order

New Zealand Specimen Banknotes ~ Some of the Most Limited Note Issues in the World

To own just one of these Pre Decimal Commonwealth banknotes preserved in pristine condition would be considered a prudent investment, so to be presented with the opportunity to obtain a consecutive pair, let alone a consecutive run of four, is a truly exciting and rewarding prospect. Pre Decimals are one of the strongest performing areas in the entire Australian banknote series with examples such as those offered here drawing high premiums due to their growing scarcity and rising demand. A tried and tested market performer with a great future assured.

Since the appearance of rare New Zealand Specimen notes onto the market approximately a decade ago, we have seen this fascinating banknote area almost triple in growth over the years. These magnificent Specimens continue to attract investment status and offer visually arresting insight into the country’s proud heritage. Similar in prominence to Australia’s early Specimen issues, New Zealand Specimens boast significantly smaller numbers printed, making them some of the rarest issues of their type in the world.

Reign of the Monarchs

Uniform Issue (1924-1934)

The Bank of New Zealand (1861-1992)

Prior to 1934 private trading banks were not obliged to accept each other’s notes so they agreed on a uniform design with all the denominations the same size and featuring identical images. Only placement of “Bank of New Zealand” differed on particular denominations.

Established in Auckland, this bank became the largest in the country with branches opened locally and in London. By 1865 it had issued more than twice the number of notes of the second largest bank, which rose to more than three times in later years. Further branches

King George V was the first monarch to appear on Australian Commonwealth banknotes when the 1923 to 1933 Gold Bearing Series was released. Notes were issued from 10/- shillings to £10 pounds, although the higher values of £20, £50, £100 and £1000 continued from the previous non-portrait series. The series was quite involved with nine varieties produced over 10 years.

The Riddle / Heathershaw was issued from 1927 to 1932. A new series of banknotes issued from 1938 was almost identical to the previous design except for a few changes including the portrait of the new monarch George VI replacing that of his father. Signatures appeared in orange on 10/- notes produced from 1939 to 1943.

Low Mintage Scarce Investment Quality Pre Decimal Proofs Offering Affordable Opportunities! Especially hand selected to inspire a diversity of investors and collectors, these supreme ‘FDC’ quality Australian Commonwealth Elizabeth II Proof Sets present excellent potential for sizeable returns, highlighting their undeniable appeal for inclusion into private investments, super funds and precious collections. Proof sets are particularly scarce as they were produced in notoriously limited numbers. As an example, the beautifully preserved 1959M (Melbourne Mint) set exhibited here touts an incredibly low mintage of just 1,506 sets. Collectors lucky enough to originally acquire these sets at just above their face value made one of the wisest investment choices in Australian numismatics today. Their consistent market performance and affordability continues to entice new and established investors alike. The First Pre Decimal Proofs The Melbourne Mint sold the first Proofs to the public from 1938 to 1939 but they were not reintroduced until 1955 when both the Melbourne and Perth Mints went into production. The last florins, shillings and sixpences were struck in 1963 and threepences, halfpennies and pennies in 1964.

Being individually wrapped in cellophane, tempted some inexperienced collectors to unwrap and handle the coins, which has made FDC grade all the rarer and exciting to acquire. (FDC) or “Flower of the Die” coins are usually perfectly preserved and incredibly scarce!

Penny Proof coins not intended for circulation were especially struck in limited numbers by both mints due to demand from the collecting public.

Australian Proof coins are amongst the most exclusive items available to collectors. The Australian Government restricted the production of Pre Decimal Proofs and only those coins struck for circulation were to be issued as Proofs, making them a highly sought after collectable today. Proof coins are masterpieces of the numismatic world, reflecting the artistry and skills of the craftsman. Well struck from special dies with a mirror-like or matte (frosted) finish, they are far superior to even the best circulation strikes, however their tiny mintages hold the key to their market performance. Proof Production

The Queen Elizabeth II Era

Commonwealth Pre Decimal Proofs struck at the Melbourne and Perth Mints were Australia’s first attempt to strike coins for commercial purposes. Each mint was responsible for the sale of its own Proofs. Perth only sold bronze and Melbourne sold all silver and some bronze issues. Each penny in The Perth Mint set featured has been professionally graded and individually slabbed in a specially designed perspex case for lifelong protection displaying the coins to their best advantage.

The portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth first appeared on Australia’s coinage in 1953. The legends ‘BR: OMN’ (Of All the Britains) and ‘F: D’ (Defender of the Faith) usually featured on the coins were omitted, which in the case of the ‘F: D’, caused a public outcry. Mint officials were quick to respond and by 1956 all but the halfpenny denomination, which was corrected in 1959, had been reinstated.

Rare Bank of Scotland 2007 Bridge Series Banknotes of the modern world presented in Uncirculated grade are hugely popular with keen collectors due to their fine state of preservation and often colourful and interesting designs. The Bank of Scotland, formed in 1695 and the first Scottish bank to issue banknotes, launched the eye-catching Bridges banknote series in September 2007. The various bridges represent Scotland’s pioneering enterprise and heritage. While the colour and size of the new notes are consistent with previous designs, the text is contemporary style and the large raised denomination numerals act as an aid for the partially sighted.

Designed by Caitlin Goodall, the coin depicts Steve in his element; amongst native flora and fauna. With his unconventional style and undeniable charisma, Steve convinced us to think about wildlife in a new way. His sudden death in 2006 stunned the world, but his legacy will not be forgotten.

Asian currency such as the North Korea Uncirculated banknotes displayed here is an interesting area of numismatics offering a great opportunity to either start or expand on your world collection. Korean note designs, such as the students with a globe on the five ‘won’, reflect the social, cultural and political aspects of the republic. The North Korean ‘won’ (KPW) issued by the Central Bank of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, has been the country’s official currency since 1947 and is intended exclusively for North Korean citizens. Uncirculated notes are prized for their crisp, flat appearance and superior state of preservation.
