Ride for your Lives for EAAA

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) launched their annual Ride for your Lives fundraising event, on 24 February at Orton Hall Hotel and Spa. The Ride for your Lives cycle event will be held in association with Orton Hall Hotel and Spa in Peterborough, on 28 June. EAAA is launching an appeal for cyclists to take part in the 15km bike ride, to celebrate the Charity’s 15th Anniversary this year. The event, which takes place at Ferry Meadows Country Park in Peterborough, takes the entrants round a route of beautiful landscapes of lakes and woodland. The course is split between tarmac tracks and off road gravel paths, and is easily manageable for riders of every ability, although serious off road cyclists will find there is fun to be had too! The course will be marshalled along its length, with complimentary water and energy bars given to those taking part. Registration costs £10 for an individual or £20 per family, and participants will be encouraged to raise vital funds for the Charity through sponsorship. Area Fundraising Manager, Chris Donaldson, said: “We are delighted to bring this successful annual event to Peterborough, making it accessible to as many people as possible.

I will certainly be riding alongside our supporters, as we try to boost our funds and help the Charity’s essential emergency work throughout the region.

If you would like to take part, registration opens on 2 March 2015 on the EAAA website: www.eaaa.org.uk. For full details and registration information please contact Leanne Tyers on 01733 367208 or email leanne.tyers@eaaa.org.uk. CHURCH NEWS

Stanground & Farcet C of E Churches In a recent TV programme about Canterbury Cathedral, Colin Berridge watched as the Cathedral’s gardeners put together a beautiful representative garden showing the tomb where Jesus was laid after his crucifixion. This prompted him to design an Easter Garden for St Michael’s church at Mace Road. In the run up to Easter he will be building it, together with our Friday Friends youth club. The garden will tell the story of the cross, torture, pain, desertion and death. There will be a grave. On Easter day the grave will open and the garden will tell a different story. We would love you to come and see the garden which will also remain in place outside the church for a few weeks after Easter. It tells us that Jesus’ cross is not a defeat; his death is the first part of a much deeper reality that is at the heart of the Christian story. Our Easter events all tell this story and how it can be real for us. On Good Friday we have our own mystery play, a dramatic re-telling of the last three days of Jesus’ life at St John’s Church at 12 noon. We are inviting local young actors to take part in this play. Last year’s event was very beautiful and thoughtful. Entry is free. On Easter Saturday there is an Easter Egg Hunt in and around St John’s. The church will be open from 10.30 for tea, coffee and hot cross buns. Abi Igbodudu and her team will be leading the egg hunt for children from 11 till 12.30. This is a free event and everyone is welcome, either to join in or just to enjoy watching the fun. May God bless you with a very Happy Easter!

Anne

Cardea Community Church Cardea Community Church started at the end of last September, meeting in the heart of the community in the training room at Morrisons. The Church meets for about an hour and aims to sing contemporary and traditional songs, pray and study the Bible together. There is always a relaxed time afterwards with tea, coffee, etc. Cardea Community Church is a new and mainline Christian church, relatively young in the make up of those attending, with a desire to be quite relaxed in the meetings, yet, at the same time, wanting to be serious as they worship God. They believe the message of Jesus Christ and the cross has never been more important for society. Although they are independent, should you wish to know what it is the Church believes, they are close to, and guided by, the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (F.I.E.C.). On Easter Sunday (5 April), the focus will be on what the Church thinks is so central to all that Christians believe: the death on the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. On that, or any other Sunday morning, anyone would be more than welcome to join with the group at 10.30am.

Transform your home with a

Blind makeover

Born and bred Stangrounder Shaun Mescall has been running Sunline Blinds for over 20 years and he has made it his mission to ensure that customer service is top of the list. Sunline Blinds offers made to measure blinds, at affordable prices, whether it be Plantation Shutters, Wooden Blinds, Fabric blinds or Venetian Blinds. With designs ranging from traditional to full on retro designs, Sunline Blinds has it all, with dozens of stunning designs to transform windows from a blank canvas into a centrepiece of your home or conservatory, or even an outside space; it’s all available on your doorstep. Sunline Blinds has an extensive showroom where you can see examples of all the different types of blinds that are offered. Shaun and his staff can also demonstrate the different mechanisms for each blind. Blinds have evolved over the last few years; one of the most positive changes is the child friendly approach. Lots of accidents had happened involving children, however, since a change in the law, all blinds now have to be child friendly. Plantation Shutters is a relatively new product for Shaun, these are a more permanent fixture that can completely

transform your home, Plantation Shutters come in a range of different styles and materials that will blend into your architecture, highlight your windows and provide the versatility to invite the light in to suit your mood, or a simple adjustment for when privacy is required. Another great advantage of Plantation Shutters is that they look equally beautiful from inside and outside, in contrast to the drab look of curtain linings. What is more, they may increase the value of your house as they are long lasting. They are not the cheapest way to dress your windows but they do look amazing. Shaun and his team are offering Stanground Gazette readers free fitting on all blinds ordered. Glen, Sunline Blinds’ resident fitter, has worked for the company for over 30 years, so has a lot of experience.

Stanground Chat Club Stanground Chat Club is a club for retired people that meets in Stanground at Kingfisher Court from 2-4pm every other Tuesday. The club offers social activities, outings and most importantly somewhere to go and enjoy a cup of tea and other people’s company.

MONEY MATTERS

by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdnco.co.uk and if of general interest, it will be published here!

Question: I started my business a year ago and have now registered for VAT – can I reclaim the VAT I paid on my purchases prior to registering for VAT?

The club has a varied programme of speakers and activities booked for the coming months including speakers on subjects such as British Film Greats, The Life and Times of Sacrewell Mill, to Working in Boots the Chemist in the 60s. Entertainment from Swing2Jazz and activities such as Chair Exercise and Musical Bingo. There is also the opportunity to go on a number of outings during the course of the year. If you would be interested in coming along to the club then please contact: Judy Butler on 01733 314003 or Mandy Dewdney at Age UK Peterborough on 01733 564185. The club is very friendly and new members will always receive a warm welcome.

Answer: Yes you can, but there’s a time limit for backdating claims for VAT paid before registration. From your date of registration the time limit is: • Four years for goods and assets you still have, or that were used to make other goods you still have; • Six months for services: You can only reclaim VAT on purchases for the business now registered for VAT. They must relate to your ‘business purpose’. This means they must relate to VAT taxable goods or services that you supply. You should reclaim them on your first VAT Return (add them to your Box 4 figure) and keep records including VAT invoices and receipts, a description and purchase dates and information about how they relate to your business now.

PAYE RTI Penalties: HMRC has announced that from March 2015 it will not be issuing a penalty for late filing of PAYE information for short delays of up to three days. There will be no change to the filing deadlines, and employers with fewer than 50 employees will still have PAYE late filing penalties apply to them, but HMRC says late payment penalties will continue to be reviewed on a risk-assessed basis rather than be issued automatically.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Turn your property into someone’s home Whether you’re a landlord already, or thinking about buy-to-let this year, there are plenty of do’s-and-don’ts to deal with in the letting industry: regulations, legal requirements, paperwork and day-to-day management... when all you really want is regular rental income, with minimum fuss. At Peterborough-based Letters Home Rentals, this is part of their daily routine. They take care of the details on your behalf, and if you’re on the lookout for a property that’s ideal for tenants – or you have one to market – their sales company, Martins Residential, offers a fully integrated service from the same office. No doubt you’ll weigh up the often considerable time commitment if you self- manage, against the value for money from a dependable, professional service. The Residential Landlords Association has said that most complaints about letting agents concern ‘poor administration’. They advise landlords never to choose on price alone and when they find a good agent, to hang on to them. Letters is a local, family-run business that’s now in its twenty-fourth year. Highly experienced, they know this area intimately, and are voluntary members of industry regulators ARLA, the Association of Residential Letting Agents.

1 Apply a spring fertiliser 1. Winter takes its toll on lawns so apply a balanced fertiliser of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium (N,P,K). At GreenThumb our customised spring fertiliser includes exactly the right mix of all these nutrients for strong grass with a vibrant colour. 2. 2 Spread fertiliser correctly It’s true to say that the more nitrogen you put on a lawn, the more it grows and the greener it gets but beware! Too much nitrogen scorches the grass; it can make it grow too quickly and weaken it. Always apply at the recommended rate. At GreenThumb we apply fertiliser using a calibrated spreader taking into account our individual walking speed.

3 Control weeds 3. Spring weather encourages weed seeds to germinate; these can be hard to see in the grass while they are tiny. Applying a herbicide at this early leaf stage will control the presence of weeds within the lawn. If your lawn has a weed problem, don’t worry, give us a call and we’ll be happy to sort them out for you. Our trained lawn care technicians are qualified to apply herbicides safely and correctly. If you do treat your lawn yourself, always read and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines.

4. 4 Visit our NEW website www.greenthumb.co.uk This will give you lots more information, hints and tips on how to have a beautiful lawn.

If you’d like us to look after your lawn for you or for a FREE lawn analysis, contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028. Email peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

SPORTS

We have lift off! Olympic weight lifting comes to Yaxley. A brand new facility has recently been opened in Yaxley, Peterborough. Pauley’s Sports Performance is a purpose built strength & conditioning and Olympic Weightlifting centre. Whether you’re young or old everyone can benefit from being stronger. Pauley’s caters for all abilities, starting with the basics of lifting safely and correctly then advancing eventually onto the full Olympic lifts. Being stronger can improve your posture and increase your flexibility! If you sit at a desk or stand all day, you can suffer from lower back pain, neck pain and shoulder tightness, through strengthening the postural muscles you could alleviate most issues resulting from poor posture. For sportsmen and women, strength training should be an integral part of your regime. Postural benefits for sportsmen and women can lead to an increase movement efficiency, injury prevention and an increase in acceleration, top speed, jump height and explosive & sustained power! The benefits really are endless and even include aiding weight loss! Our professional coaches can work one to one to give you a individually tailored programme and personal coaching, or if you’d like to see what weightlifting is all about then pop along to one of our beginners classes on a Monday night from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and remember your first session is free!

LEGAL

Keeping your divorce stress free and simple If you have decided your marriage is over you will most probably want to make the whole process of divorce as painless as possible. So what is the secret? 1. Firstly, don’t only take advice from your friends and family, seek professional advice from a family lawyer committed to resolving disputes in a non-confrontational way. 2. Listen to the professional advice given to you and try to act upon it. Always negotiate before you litigate. Compromise is the essence of any agreement. 3. Inevitably there will be disagreements with your spouse but try to keep emotions under control and avoid verbal abuse and threats. This will simply lead to them becoming difficult and inflexible. You do not want a war. 4. Try to avoid involving the children or using them as a pawn. They are innocent in this situation and they will need the love and support of both parents. 5. You may have been thinking about a divorce for years whereas your partner may only have received the news a matter of weeks ago. You might have to slow down for a while, be patient, and wait until they are ready to discuss matters.

r e t s a E ipe Rec

6. Consider all the options available to resolve matters, such as solicitor negotiation, mediation, collaborative law and only consider court proceedings as a last resort. A Resolution committed lawyer will explore the best option with you, suited to your individual case. Whilst getting a divorce is clearly not an ideal situation it does not have to be a time consuming, stressful, unpleasant money pit. Sensible advice coupled with sensible people can help to ensure the experience is as painless and cost effective as possible but more importantly that you and your children can move forward with your lives in the best possible way. For advice on divorce or any family law issue contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Call 01480 270499 or email abby.smith@family-lawfirm.co.uk.

horrible diseases.

STANGROUND BLOG

I was thinking... It’s happened. The effects of a diet that largely consists of biscuits and tea has finally caught up with me. Even I, the laziest of lazy things, has realised that something needs to be done. It became apparent to me on my recent snowboarding holiday that I have the lung capacity of an asthmatic shrew. This needs fixing! So, I descended vulture style, (another animal metaphor) upon a bike shop that was closing down and bought myself a clearance price bike. Of course, when I managed to get the thing out of the car and into the garden to reassemble it, I immediately took a photo and uploaded it to Facebook. From my understanding of fitness, gyms and working out etc., it only becomes worth doing once you have put it on Facebook to let everyone know what a health hero you are. I’m fairly certain that actually doing any of the work is secondary. My health drive had commenced. With bike in shed, and trusting that the weather would be perfect for my plans, I planned the route I would ride the next day, mentally prepared for the feat of endurance I was about to embark upon. No more unhealthy lying around and bad diets for me!

g your pet Vaccinatin way to is the best em from protect th iseases. horrible d

After a night of heavy drinking and questionably cooked hot dogs, I awoke at the crack of noon and stared, bleary eyed out of my bedroom window. My weather related prayers had been answered, dark clouds raced across the sky and a strong wind threatened to rip the fence panels off of the posts. There was no way I was going out on the bike that day. Perfect! But my spirit is indomitable. I will procrastinate wisely. I took a trip to Rutland Cycles to obtain some gear that would make me resemble the quintessential cyclist. The shop has changed since I was last there; it’s been expanded with the addition of greater floor space, therefore, it amazed me that the place didn’t actually have anything for sale in it! Unless, that is, you’re in the market for a ludicrously brightly coloured helmet, or uncomfortable looking skin tight shorts (I’m not), or a bike that costs more than the average family car, you’re out of luck. I left victorious. I could now put off the fitness thing for another week. I still haven’t actually ridden the bike further than round the corner to make sure the pedals were on properly, though I am optimistic that I will summon the energy (from an unknown source) to take it out at the weekend. Which leaves me with a request…if you do happen to find someone collapsed underneath a bike next to the river, please check that I’m still alive and ...take me back to the pub! by Jack Moakes

Pet Vaccinations: Why, What & How Often...

PET CARE

The diseases Vets vaccinate our pets against are generally very difficult, if not impossible, to treat successfully if contracted, which is why we feel so strongly about vaccinating pets. But how easy is it for our furry family members to contract one of these diseases? You might think they’d have to come into contact with an already sick animal, and like me, you’d be wrong. Why vaccinate? Whilst an unvaccinated animal can spread infection directly to another it is unlikely that as an owner you would allow your healthy pet to have contact with such an infected animal. It is therefore far more likely for pets to contact these diseases indirectly from the environments they frequent or carrier species. For example: Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) and Distemper have large environmental reservoirs of infection - contact with standing water contaminated with rat urine can be enough to transmit them. Parvovirus can remain on pavements for as long as two years come rain, shine or snow. Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) can be transmitted to rabbits from contaminated bedding or food, and Myxomatosis via biting insects.

Facebook “f ” Logo

CMYK / .eps

Facebook “f ” Logo

What vaccinations should be given and how often: Diseases that vets currently routinely vaccinate dogs against are: • Adenovirus • Distemper • Infectious Canine Hepatitis • Parvovirus • Parainfluenza • Leptospirosis The above can all be vaccinated against in one go, after an initial two injection course this vaccination must then be topped up by a booster injection every year to provide adequate levels of the vaccine to fight against infection.

• Myxomatosis • Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) Nowadays these are administered together in one injection and which needs to be repeated annually.

Non routine vaccinations for other diseases

• Cat Flu * Feline Panleukopaenia (Feline Enteritis) * Feline Leukaemia Virus

Kennel Cough is usually only vaccinated against if dogs are being kennelled or deemed at a high risk from mixing with other dogs regularly at dog shows, training classes etc…

Cat Flu and Enteritis can be vaccinated against in one injection, whist Leukaemia vaccinations are done in addition to this but can be done at the same time. After an initial two-injection course both vaccinations require booster injections every year just like vaccinated dogs do.

Both cats and dogs are required to be vaccinated against Rabies if going abroad under DEFRA’s Pet Travel Scheme. Beware, animals without all the right paperwork won’t be allowed back into the UK without six months quarantine!

What about cats?

Awesome service! I rang up and got an appointment straight away. As soon as I got there they started the paperwork. I was done within 40 mins. Very good service. Mr Reeve, Norwich. Strong Customer / V5 Solution Relationship

What is a logbook loan? Logbook loans are short term loans, generally less than 2 years long, that use a customer’s vehicle as security. We use a bill of sale to secure the vehicle to the loan. You can borrow loans from £300 depending on your vehicle and personal circumstances and you keep using your vehicle while your loan is running.

Who takes out a logbook loan? Over the past 15 years we’ve served customers from all walks of life and with all sorts of cars, vans, motorcycles, tractors and even HGV trucks! The common theme was that they all needed to raise cash quickly for an emergency. We can see you the same day and all our loans are paid out immediately afterwards.

I have been a customer with V5 Solutions for many years now and I have a very strong relationship with them. They make the paperwork easy to understand and everything is explained thoroughly before you make your commitment. I would definitely recommend V5 solutions to anybody who wish to have a loan against their car. Malcolm, Norwich. V5 Solutions loan criteria You must be over 18, UK resident and able to demonstrate a regular paid income. You must own a vehicle that is free of finance in good condition and less than 10 years old. As responsible lenders all our loans are subject to your affordability and your vehicle may be at risk if you default on the repayments.

Katie‘s Stars April 2015

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

Aries March 21-April 20

You need to be disciplined this month particularly where work and study is concerned, you cannot afford to take your eye off the ball, doing so will cost you dearly. An opportunity to travel should not be missed as it will open many doors for you.

Taurus April 21-May21

A decision must be made this month about your emotions and affairs of the heart, you cannot go on pretending that it will all be ok. Put yourself first and refuse to be beholden or manipulated by anyone. A new friendship is set to blossom, enjoy the company.

Gemini May 22-June 22 This month you can firmly work towards new plans, dreams and ideas for your future, you’ll be feeling alive and excited by the possibilities available to you. Don’t limit yourself, but be prepared for refinement at a later date. Cancer June 23-July 23

You are loyal through and through, but if anyone crosses or hurts you, they’d better watch out, as your pincers will be working overtime. A fantastic breakthrough with your work, will raise your profile bring you the recognition you deserve.

Leo

July 24-August 23 Seek professional advice this month, particularly with important decisions or if legal paperwork needs signing, as you must ensure all your facts are in order before proceeding. Excitement builds around the promise of a new relationship.

Virgo August 24-September 23 Domestic upheaval and a change to family plans, may well cause you a headache this month, but focus on the end goal, as all the effort now will be worth the amazing results later down the line. Where possible address your stress levels and try to have some ‘me time’. Libra September 24-October 23

You need eyes in the back of your head this month as someone you least expect could actually trip you up and catch you out. What is their game plan? Is it jealousy or are they trying to cover their own back?

Scorpio October 24-November 22 A close friend may reveal a side of their personalty which will shock you. Take a step back and fully evaluate the situation, after which you must decide whether the friendship is worth pursuing. Health issues look set to improve after the 15th, but take things easy. Sagittarius November 23-December 21

You could find yourself peddling at a hundred miles an hour in order to rectify a problem you have created, but is your effort enough? Significant changes on the work front may be beyond your control, but you must adapt accordingly if you are to succeed.

Capricorn December 22-January 20

Although you may not find it easy to display your emotions, dig deep this month, as a loved one will need all the support you can offer. A very busy time at work is approaching, it could even be time to talk about a pay rise, or if in business, put your prices up.

Aquarius January 21-February 19 Adventure and experiences are calling you, it’s a big world out there, but who or what, are you waiting for? Channel your energies accordingly as a fantastic opportunity is looming, particularly if you are looking for a career change or to ‘break through the glass ceiling.’ Pisces February 20-March 20

News travels fast and your private life may well be public knowledge. Do you really know the people with whom you confide in? Property may be a big focus this month, either moving or renovating, call in any favours to help you out.

If it is your birthday this month....

You are often the voice of reason and can be tactful and diplomatic, however, you are not able to account for some peoples poor listening skills, remember, you cannot please everyone. A stroke of luck later this month will give you a reason to celebrate.

CONSUMER ADVICE

Nuisance calling companies will now face fines of up to £500,000

by Eileen Le Voi

Con

Last year 175,000 people complained to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) about nuisance calls. Until now firms have been able to evade prosecution because victims had to prove ‘substantial harm or distress’. The law changed on the 25th February 2015 to allow the ICO to prosecute nuisance callers more easily and help protect the millions that suffer from these calls. This means that regulators will be able to impose fines of up to £500,000 on firms which make repeated, unwanted nuisance calls. The new rules will come into force on 6th April 2015. Changes to the law were spearheaded by Which?, the Consumer Champion. Executive Director, Richard Lloyd said, ‘We welcome the Government making good on its promise to change the law so it’s easier to prosecute nuisance callers. These calls are an everyday menace blighting the lives of millions so we want the regulator to send a clear message by using their new powers to full effect without delay. It’s also good news that the Government has listened to our call and is looking into how senior executives can be held to account if their company makes nuisance calls.”

What next?

In order to keep the pressure up, it is important that you report any companies who cold call or send nuisance texts. If you take a call, the first question you should ask is ‘what is your company name and address’? Also it is important to make a note of the date and time. To report online, go to www. which.co.uk/campaigns/nuisance-calls-andtexts or call the TPS (Telephone Preference Service) on 0845 070 0707. To find vetted and approved local traders, go to www.safelocaltrades.com or call 01733 530019
