do you remember?
it seems so long ago and so far away but it was only yesterday wasn't it? that we all came alone from far and near and joined as one.
i remember the delicious tingle of excitement, or was it fright? as i came to learn and i have — in more ways than one.
i remember the loneliness of not seeing a familiar face among all these strangers
but the joy of seeing these strangers become familiar and learning to love them.
i remember the sadness of leaving my old friends and family to travel here

the road to the river the road to the river ran over the meadow and down like a rapid through shallow and stone through mornings where juniper lay in the shadow like smoke and the heart in sunlight alone ran down to the bridge that went over the tumble of water and wind going out to the sea In sight of the dam and the sound of the rumble of wheels that went over the river with me then up where the path climbed a stairway of ledges and sloped through a field newly busy with sun where cows that looked up from the mist at its edges turned back to the silence again one by one turned back but the path followed on to its ending a pool where a boom in the river was swung a boom like a bow that some god had been bending a nd failing had left in the river unstrung richard bond

John gordon to retire mr. gordon, a westbrook faculty member since 1952, retires in june. scientist, devoted teacher and friend, rugged individualist, he will be greatly missed, all who know his yankee allegiance to hard work and original thought wish him well as he takes up not so much "retirement" as new directions of interests and accomplishment.
