a college community is not an ivory tower that shelters one from the realities of life. it is a living community that experiences the joys and sorrows of human existence. viewed from this perspective, westbrook college is a microcosm of our world. as members of the westbrook community, we are thus faced with many of the problems inherent in human society. the westbrook student is not untouched by the turmoil of change, the conflicts in human relations and the question of her personal role in the life of the college community.

we choose our role in the college community. to make a choice between involvement and isolation requires self evaluation . we must discover our own capabilities and goals in order to decide which path we will follow. we ask ourselves : do we desire a voice in the operations of the college? are we capable of devoting the necessary time and energy to college activities? can we maintain our individuality and preserve those needed moments of solitude in the midst of communal involvement? these questions are not relevant for the westbrook situation only. they will continue to arise throughout every stage of our existence.

as a meeting ground for a variety of curricula, westbrook provides its students with the difficult task of co-existing with people having differing goals and attitudes. the integration of the medical, business, and liberal arts students forces us to deal with opinions and ideas that challenge our own. this situation is often a source of misunderstanding and hostility because of our insecurities and narrowness, which cause us to feel threatened by opposing views. we must overcome this intolerance and come to appreciate the unique opportunity of living and working with a group of varied individuals.
change has always provided society with its greatest moral , social and political questions. unwillingness to change often results in a loss of vitality and creativity. on the other hand, change brought about without caut ion and responsibi lity frequently creates a chaotic and destructive situation . the westbrook community is not immune to th is problem . in recent years , the college has had to cope w ith changing moral , social , and pol itical attitudes and conditions. the question, how to change without sacrificing valued ideals and traditions, has posed a great dilemma for the entire college community. the prospect of change may arouse uncertainty, fear and even bitterness. but, viewed positively, it forces us to re-examine our presently held aims and beliefs. therefore, despite the turmoil born out of change, it seems to have been a healthy experience for the westbrook community to contend with and adjust to this period of transition .

the experience of living in the westbrook community can be a fruitful one, for it does embody, on a smaller scale, the characteristics of human society. we are not simply asked to perform academically. rather, we are asked to co-exist with others in a small , intimate atmosphere which may, at times, serve to magnify human problems and conflicts. it requires great effort from the ind ividual to create and maintain a harmonious community. in spite of the difficulties involved, we should never underestimate the value of such an experience. many fail to see westbrook from this perspective. some regard it as a protect ive shield against the cold hard realities of life. others feel that the existence of westbrook is justified only by its capacity to teach skills, relate knowledge and nothing more. the staff of tower '73 believes that a great deal is lost through such narrow vision . we urge you to take a deeper look at the people of this college and discover that westbrook is not a sterile, academic structure. seek out the living, human community that is westbrook and allow yourself to enrich its life as it will enrich yours .

the boy runs ahead , impatient to stop to breathefor what is oxygen to the bellows of the soul? he plunges ahead, drives on into the next moment, driven by energies that would burn out the stars; i call to him, "michael! wait!" but the roar of the gull, and the crash of the spring breeze is louder and he does not hear me. the thundering blue of the sea sky drowns out my feeble cries and he runs ahead. the pools of sand splash high as he kicks about him, the emptied mollusk shell echoes his childish glee. lo, the stick of driftwood sprouts green leaves in his hand. again, in strident speech i shout, "wait!" ah, fool o* a father, you chase not a child of flesh but a spirit liberated. let him go! do not imprison him in your field of vision lest you enrage the very gods. let him go, let him screech out to sea on salt spray and run again to land with the tide. see, even now he leaves the earth as he catches the gull and they laugh together as they lift to fly. i lift my eyes, strangely wet, and in sharpened wisdom, that is without words like wait, wonder why the gods should choose this moment to show me their hand. carlyle lewis
