Again it rains, and I turn about. The sounds of water falling on rocks and of air falling on trees are very much alike. Though cloudy, the air excites me. Yesterday all was tight as a stricture on my breast; to-day all is loosened. It is a different element from what it was. The sides of the bushy hill where the snow is melted look, through this air, as if I were under the influence of some intoxicating liquor. The earth is not quite steady nor palpable to my senses, a little idealized. Thoreau

& special
recognition
It has become a tradition at Westbrook to dedicate the Tower each year to a campus personality who, in the view of the senior class, has made unusual and distinctive contributions to the life of the College. The year 1970-1971 has been an exceptional year in the history of Westbrook, a year of transition under new leadership, a year of action and change. During our senior year we have been conscious of the dynamic flow of ideas and events that have established new patterns of education at Westbrook. We have also been conscious of another element that has not changed: that is people, all of them, who have, in the midst of change, helped to broaden that sense of amiable unity that is the essence of the Westbrook spirit. To them our class has dedicated the 1971 Tower. But at the same time the enthusiasm and appreciation of the class for a particular teacher was so unmistakable that we felt urged to extend to him this special recognition. Always working for us as well as with us, he has become to us a symbol of understanding and trust. He has brought us closer to an awareness of ourselves. He has taught us the discipline of honest self evaluation. It is for these reasons that the graduating class of 1971, with deep affection and gratitude, pays special tribute to Mr. Theodore Perry. "We are sometimes made aware of a kindness long passed, and realize that there have been times when our friends' thoughts of us were of so pure and lofty a character that they passed over us like the winds of heaven unnoticed; when they treated us not as what we were, but as what we aspired to be." Thoreau

This is a volume of many parts: It is a history of this academic year. It is a biographical dictionary which defines the nature and deeds of the several players. It is an encyclopedia, an ana of this place that is Westbrook in the days that are now. It is an almanac, with horoscopes, for between the lines are the clues and omens of what each will become. It is a whodunit without contemporary mystery but fraught with the suspense of uncertain futures. It is a poem, unmetered, with panegyrics of past achievements; and songs of hope, unmeasured, for future gestes. Most of all, it is a love story, about people with common cause, come together in this tradition that is Westbrook, who have learned that to understand is to care, to care is to love, to love is to give to give is to find fulfillment to find fulfillment is happiness. This volume is about you and happiness. May you always walk hand in hand. James Franklin Dickinson

There comes, infrequently, a beginning and an end of days — a time marked clearly as if by parentheses — one's college years are such a time. As this class leaves Westbrook it is impossible for those of us who have known you and who remain behind not to wish that we might have made the time more memorable even than it may have been for you. There was much that we might have done and did not do, not because we did not wish to do so, but because we are human, limited by our nature and hurried by the passing days. And we are aware too that there was much that you would have wished to do to make these years more meaningful for yourselves and for one another. Life is imperfect and our intent can never, in whole measure, be fulfilled. But it is nonetheless true that we have shared in these years a sound goodwill, a belief in some common, if indefinite, value. There will be other parentheses of years for you marked clearly by beginnings and by ends. Among the things that you may have learned at Westbrook, I hope that paramount and most leasting will be the willingness in all times to hold to a faith that life has a constant, if indefinite value, however imperfectly one must live it. Such may be the greatest responsibility we bear to live in such a way as to confirm our faith in one another and in our common life. May the years ahead be good to you and may you return often to Westbrook in fact and in fancy. Richard F. Bond Dean of the College

Not that the others are gone, all of them, forever, And they have your answer, and you have theirs, and the decision is made, And the river of minutes between you widens to a tide of hours, a flood of days, a gulf of years and a sea of silence; If now, there are any questions you would like to ask of the shapes that still move and speak inaudibly in the empty room, If there are any different arrangements you would like to suggest, Make them to the river boats, whose echoing whistle will be a clear reply, Speak to the seagulls, their effortless flight will provide any answer you may wish to hear, Ask the corner chestnut vendor, ask the tireless hammer and pulse of the subway, Speak to the family on the illuninated billboard, forever friendly, or to the wind, or to the sign that sways and creaks above the stationer's door. . . . And so there ain't nothing more to write about, and I am rotten glad of it, because if I'd a knowed what a trouble it was to make a book I wouldn't a tackled it and I ain't agoing to any more. But I reckon I got to light out For the Territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally she's going to adopt me and sivilize me and I can't stand it. I been there before.
