The Editorial Staff of the TOWER has chosen this year to speak to you through the voice of America's most beloved poet, Robert Frost. Because, like !tim, we have lived through the glorious New England seasons and have seen the bright hues of Autumn, the qttiet beauty of new fallen mow, tlze green -gold of Spring, we feel that the seasons will color our memories of Westbrook. As you read over the familiar Frost lines, Wl' hope you will hear, once again, iu your mind's ear his voice "saying" !tis poemJ路 and that you 'will agree 'with w that lze tells it the way it iJ better than auyollt' elJe ever lzaJ. In memory, therefore, a11d i11 admiration of Robert Frost, the Tower Staff presents this book as a way of cxpreSJing our gratitude for his poetry . Marcia M rEldmmzcy Editor

dedication Your intellectual integrity, your tempered optimism, your own generous belief in the best that is in people, have taught us to look to the fut1tre with an upward glance. Because your door has never been closed to 11s and because we have been able to confide in you, secure in tlze knowledge that what we say will be received with understanding and held in trust, we have come to respect and honor you. By depending on you for guidance and finding it good and true, we have learned that the space bct'1.vecn tlze genr'rat iom is not a gap but a bridge. To you, D ean Bond, the Class of 19 68 is proud and happy to express its appredation and affection through this dedication to you of the 1968 TOWER. Marcia McEld0'7.vney Editor

May you, each of you, be one on whom nothing is lost. May you always be aware of your associates and your capacity to make their lives complete, and may you learn to manage your lives with taste and judgment, with rational idealism, patience, courage and responsibility. All these, plus a well cultivated sense of humor, will bring you happiness. From President Blewett's Opening Convocation Address, 1967

It is hard to shut out from the mind the world Talking and laughing at one's ear, shining Its bright streets in one's eyes and Touching one so familiarly. But I am weary of it all the same and think So wishfully of a world more quiet, a world Where I perhaps would be intruder, but I would Sit or walk very quietly and only watch The water running and the trees holding the sttn And the grass lifting from the wind, listening To whatever spoke or sang. And I would take Only such as I needed and worship God alone Among the hills. A World More Quiet Richard Bond

ON TEACHING It is commonly recognized that teaching is more than a skill and a profession, that it is essentially an art that deals with the substance and color of youthful intereJ路ts and capacities. For the teacher, it is an art that demands an intricate balance of knowledge, enthusiasm, and int1tition. It requires a sensitivity to a hundred diverse temperaments, a refusal to be discouraged by indifference, a constant capacity to 1'eward the diligent and to stimulate the reluctant.

It is an essential that the teacher be honest with regard to his own commitment and to be firm but fair with regard to the commitment of others, to discriminate between levels of performance, to criticize without discouraging, to defer, sometimes, to opinions less experienced but equally sincere. Teaching demands of the teacher both self-respect and humility, objectivity and compassion, idealism and hard-headedness, a sense of gravity and a sense of httmor. Teaching is, in short, a way of living demanding all that is humanly best in those who practice it. For those who practice it best it provides rich recompense in the continuing association with the questing minds andgenerous spirits of the young. Richard F. Bond Dean of the College

June, 1968, will mark the retirement of Mr. Olver Gerry, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. Mr. Gerry has been a familiar and popular figure on the \Vestbrook campus for over eighteen years. The pleasure which we all enjoy in \Vestbrook's well -kept buildings and attractive grounds is the result in large part of Mr. Gerry's own dedication to keeping our college operating at the best possible level. But, above and beyond the regular duties of his office, ,\lr. Gerry has won the high regard of all the \Vestbrook Family for his kindness, his patience, his willingness to extend a skillful helping hand in any situation. On behalf of the Class of 1968, the Tower Staff extends best wishes to Mr. Geny and his family for much happiness in the years ahead.

A college serves as a foundation for learning, a learning which creates an insight unique to each individual. A college can help shape and set student objectives, if it believes in its students and if, in turn, they believe in the college. Education is thus a give and take process in which the giving and taking on both sides of the academic fence must be participated in freely and generously. To those of us who have been willing during these past two years to give and take in this spirit, Westbrook has offered a rich and memorable experience. Our college has been, truly, the "Westbrook family." Here we have made close friendships; here we have found knowledge, understanding and guidance. Westbrook has earned our gratitude. llopefully, in the years that lie ahead it will receive the continuing loyalty of the Class of 1968. Jane Gruber President, Class of 1968

TO VICKI On occasion I deny the existence of intangible reality - all that I'm not touching, all that's not in me. You are a part of me, regardless of your transition from physical to abstract. But this little consolatory rationalization never con tributes one grain of comfort to your goneness. Susan Morrissey '68 74

The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the unde,r growth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day I Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhe1'e ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

How truly ideal are those id~als we are taught to uphold at Westbrook. We come to Westbrook with a purpose, but we do not fully understand it until we endeavor to ful fill it through education. Education on the college level has numerous facets. liV hen discovered and studied through exploration, they are conquered. And in this true satisfaction lies. During our first year at Westbrook, we strive to uphold these ideals, discover our purpose, and gain true satisfaction through added knowledge. Margery Feinberg President, Class of 1969

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; H e will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. H e gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

Nothing Gold Can Stay Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.

The Student View American Society in Transition Donna Stetson Tina Sagris Irene Bouchard

elegancia indigena "My own aspiration is the same as that of Simon Bolivar, who envisioned a federation of states covering the entire American continent. In 1826, at the 1st Pan American Congress at Panama he wrote: 'The New World would be constituted in independent nations, joined together by a common law and ... where the barriers of origin, race and color would disappear.' But this can only come about if we are willing to meet our American neighbors as individuals if we are willing to speak both the language of the mind with statistics and ideas and the language of the heart with feelings and emotions. To achieve a better quality of life in this American continent, it is not enough to know and understand: we must also communicate and love." From address by Mario Nannetti Valencia of Bogota, Colombia, March 28, 1968.
