Dedication

T h e rapport between the faculty and students at Westbrook has always been strong and sincere. W e believe you are an outstanding example of this relationship. In the classroom you have taught us to think for ourselves in a way that has added to our knowledge and, what is more important, to our self-knowledge. Outside the classroom you have always been a willing listener and friend. By impartially presenting facts, you have been objective; by posing thought-provoking controversial questions, you have been subjective. This combination has helped promote the understanding and individuality which is the foundation of any worthwhile education. You have devoted to us much precious time and genuine interest; you have been an advisor to us both individually and as a class. For this and m u c h more, we, the Class of 1965, thank you and in appreciation dedicate this yearbook to you, Mr. Theodore A. Perry.

An Appreciation By The Glass Of 1965 Honoring Ethel Witherspoon Alexander Oakey Logan Alexander Hall is at the very center of campus life. It is, indeed, the hearthstone of the College, for it radiates warmth and welcome; it draws into its friendly atmosphere faculty, students, friends. For the Class of 1965 it is a building of many memories. Every day all who live and work and study at Westbrook are involved in the life of Alexander Hall. W e , the Class of 1965, take special pleasure, therefore, in expressing in the T O W E R our appreciation to Mrs. Oakey Logan Alexander and to the other two Trustees of the Foundation, Mr. Joseph P. Hartnett of New York City, and Westbrook Trustee Mr. F. E d w a r d Repetto, for their generosity which in large measure m a d e our college center a reality. Mrs. Alexander is a native of Kentucky, a state renowned for its unmatched hospitality. W e like to think that some of tins warm Southern charm and graciousness has been transplanted to Maine through Alexander Hall.

Ethel Witherspoon Alexander (Mrs. Oakey Logan Alexander)

Ethel Witherspoon Alexander, the daughter of Martinette Viley Witherspoon and Lister Witherspoon of Versailles, Kentucky, is a descendent of two of the most famous families in the South. Her mother's ancestry traces back in Burkes Royul Families to Alfred the Great, Charlemagne, Kenneth McAlpin. and H u g h Capet. In this country she could lay proud claim to a long line of distinguished Colonial governors, clergymen, and men of business. Stonewall, the Viley homestead and stock farm in Woodford County, Kentucky, was noted for its fine horses and its generous hospitality. Near Stonewall stood the home which Mrs. Alexander knows best, Glenartney, the Witherspoon residence built in L830 and twice destroyed by lire, once in 1901 and again in 1958. T h e

One of the most interesting ancestors of Mrs. Alexander on her father's side was Dr. John Witherspoon, b o m in Scotland, a graduate of the University ol Edinburgh. H e served twice as President of Princeton College and was one of the signers of the Declaration ol Independence, his signature being the only one by a clergyman on that document. Mrs. Alexander was married to Oakey Logan Alexander, a native of West Virginia, in L909. Throughout his long and extremely successful career as an industrialist. Your contributions to Westbrook Junior College in the past six years are far too numerous to list here. The five new buildings and the expanded educational opportunities are improvements of which every student in her day-to-day life is well aware. But there is another contribution, less tangible and less often mentioned, that perhaps means even more to us as students.

Your personal

concern for each one of us exemplifies at the highest administrative level the pervading spirit of Westbrook; its honest regard for the individual. Your cordial invitations to visit Hollister House, your attendance at nearly all school activities, and your cheerful hello as you walk across campus are just a few of the ways in which you both have shown your hospitality and friendliness.

This sincere

interest has been one of your largest contributions to this class and to our life here. For this, President and Mrs. Blewett, the members of the Class of 1965 express our appreciation and thanks.

To The Class of 1965 — A Message From President Blewett

"Let us settle ourselves, and work and wedge our feet downward through the mud and slush of opinion, and prejudice, and tradition, and delusion, and appearance, that alluvium which covers the globe . . . , 'til we come to the hard bottom and rocks in place, which we can call reality, and say, 'This is, and no mistake'; and then begin having a point d'appiu (a foundation)."

Henry David Thoreau wrote this. One of your classmates ran across it in her reading and said of it, "This quotation expresses my feelings about why I chose Westbrook Junior College and what I have gained from it." Her association of the New England sage's statement and her own feeling about Westbrook came to me by happy accident. I say "happy" for it seems to me that there could b e no better statement of the Purpose of the College; no more succinct description of our efforts, all of us, in your behalf these past two years. If you have found here at Westbrook an ideal of commitment, an understanding of the self that is based upon honor and a sense of reality, then truly the foundation, the necessary "point d'appiu," has been established. W e hope, ever so earnestly, that the horeau quotation also expresses your feelings about your choice of Westbrook, and what you have gained from it.

"Integrity for oneself and the assurance of integrity in others become an intrinsic part of a true education." —GEORGETOWN CONFERENCE—1964

Dean Bond The busiest of men, D e a n Bond still never seems to be too hurried, too engaged in "more important" problems, to give the inquiring student his undivided interest and attention. Stopped in the hall on the way to a meeting, he has time to give an assuring nod and a quick word of advice. If the question is an important one, the student can count on a follow-up conference and a consistent effort to help her work out her problem intelligently. Anyone who has sat down for a talk in the Dean's office, whether it is for a happy or an unhappy reason, knows the value of his exceptional insight and his kindly but always candid counsel.

10

For the consideration and sincerity you have shown, as our academic advisor and friend, we, the Class of 1965, thank you.

"The extent of one's own contribution can be measured only by one's own sense of responsibility." —GEORGETOWN CONFERENCE—1964

Dean O'Brien

In September there were many changes noticed by the class of 1965. O n e of these was the new position held by Mrs. O'Brien. She had shown much success in her previous work at tlio college4 and she proceeded to handle all the new responsibilities of Assistant Dean with the same4 capability she4 had shown in the past. Dean O'Brien, concerned with the college4 standing and the4 sneavss ol its students, works relentlessly for the4 be4ne4fit of everyone. Her industrious partieipation in school functions, h<4r geamine4 enthusiasm, and he4r personal dedication to Westbrook combine te) make her a vital figure4 ol the4 school's administration.

SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Yvonne Whiting, President; Sandra Davison, Vice President; Margot Hoyt, Secretary; Pamela Gore, Treasurer.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CLASS PRESIDENT In this world of ours the miracles of nature stand as monuments to the essence of beauty and timelessness. From the giant Red Woods of California to the jagged seacoast of Maine, America's greatness can b e seen and felt in her permanent natural beauty. We, unlike nature's monuments, are neither timeless nor fixed. Our greatness is in our ability to imagine, to communicate, to create, and to move freely about. W e are, each one of us, unique, and each is engaged in shaping her individual destiny. Yet to accomplish this we must, paradoxically, work through our associations with others. Here at Westbrook we have, together, taken one step of many that will lead to the making of our individual personalities. Through each book and each friend, through our studies and recreations, w e have come that much closer to finding a truer self and a higher purpose. As a class, with the help of our advisors, we have strived to use our mistakes as our stepping stones. Rut this is only the beginning. As Wilfred Peterson said in The Art of Living, "We are the heir of the ages. Men reaching for the stars have created for us a world of wonder and challenge." W e welcome this challenge of wonder. And, though the the richness of our memories common pursuit will hold us

and rejoice in this world miles may separate us, here and the unity of a together.

Graduation 1964 (A Preview of Things to Come)

June 6th through the 8th is the time when the familiar tent is raised behind Proctor and those longawaited caps and gowns are worn by the tear-stained-faced seniors. The weekend begins with the reading of the class will and testimony at the Seafood Buffet Dinner, and is augmented by the Moonlight Cruise on Caseo Bay. The following day, it is a mad dash to the beach, then to graduation practice and the final packing stages. Sunday, finally that big day has arrived, and with it, the girls' proud parents and friends to watch them walk down the aisle and to see the commencement of their daughters' goals.

In Appreciation The relationship of the house director to the students under her charge is a unique one, for she has opportunity to know them in a personal way and in an intimate environment that is not shared by other members of the college family. Westbrook has been fortunate in having over the years an excellent staff of house directors. Three who have served the College long a n d well are retiring this year — Mrs. Denise Schluter Mrs. Eva Hill Mrs. Mildred Russell T h e Class of 1965 extends to them its warm best wishes for much happiness in the years ahead.

MR. R I C H A R D ROBERTS MR. V A U G H N T W A D D E L A MESSAGE F R O M T H E F R E S H M A N CLASS P R E S I D E N T A year ago each member of our class participated in a commencement exercise that not only marked the end of a long challenge met, but also opened the gate towards a new and rewarding challenge — that of college. We, as individuals, came to accept the new freedom and obligations that awaited us away from the parental environment of our high school years. Now we face a new type of challenge. We must become responsible citizens in our own institutional society, Westbrook Junior College. Our Freshman year has offered many benefits. It has enabled us to broaden our minds and to accept the responsibilities of living constructively in an everchanging world. In fulfilling our goal in college life we must strive to better ourselves and to achieve maturity, both academically and socially, so that, a year from now, we may be prepared for the next challenge that lies ahead, that of becoming working partners in a society that demands education, responsible leadership, and a devotion to the ideals of the past which have made the American democracy work. Student Council

The governing body at Westbrook, the Student Council, consists of the presidents of the campus dorms and day hop organization, as well as the president of the Junior Deans and presidents of the freshman and senior classes. Among the various activities the Student Council has performed during the past year were the sponsorship of a needy family and the remembrance of many of the patients at Portland City Hospital. The Student Council also helped put into effect the successful Honor Code. The Council has done much to try and uphold the rules of the college by working for a better studentfaculty understanding.

Masque and Candle The highlight of the Masque and Candle year has been the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Shakespeare. Student actresses enjoyed the opportunity to work with faculty and other local actors in presenting a performance of "A Mid-summer Night's Dream." Sunday-night Workshops were a new feature introduced to the club this year. They have given opportunity for study and experience in the varied aspects of play production.

Dining-In Series

Rita Da

This year Westbrook was host to a series of speakers well acquainted with the various aspects of a woman's life. Insight, both sociological and psychological, was gained into the separate and combined roles of the modern woman in the home, the working world, and the1 community. Opening the thoughtful series in September w a s Dr. Zelma George speaking on " H i e Sociologist Looks at Woman in our Society." In October, D r . Robert E. L. Stridor, President of Colby CCollege, spoke on "Marriage, Partnership or Battleground?" November saw the author, Betty Eriedan, on campus to discuss her bestseller, The Feminine Mystique. Bonnie Prudden, who was a leading figure in the national physical fitness program during the Eisenhower administration, spoke on the importance of physical fitness in the life of the individual. Faculty member Arthur Freundlich spoke in early December on "The Emotional and Psychological Health of the Woman", Lesle) Frost, daughter of the late1 Robert Frost, stressed the1 importance of continuing education lor women. \n other distinguished visitor on the campus was Mrs. Pita Dar ol India. She discussed A Foreigner Looks at American Women". Mrs. Healy, Director ol Developmental Westbrook, spoke on "Women and Careers". Then, shortly after, Mrs. James S. Coles of Brunswick emphasized the necessit) and importance 1 ol women in the home1. April and Spring brought with it, appropriately enough, the1 arrival of Eleanor Lambert, one ol the nation's holding fashion and design publicists, who brought us up to date on fashion for the modern woman. The year's list of guest speakers ended on the stimulating note of "Women in Politics" with Mrs. Patsy Mink, U.S. Congresswoman from Hawaii, stressing the role ol women in this important area ol life. A critique of the year's Dining-In convocations brought the series to a close. Seniors Ellen Eichmann, Sue1 Sharp, and Sharon Renoit presented this lively and incisive commentary.

T h e annual Christmas Weekend, sponsored by t h e Senior Class, launched us into the Yuletide spirit this year. Festivities began with an all-campus effort to decorate the big tree in Alexander. Saturday's outing to the A-frame in Windham was both fun and relaxing, with ample food and singing led by Miss Preston and her escort. "Christmas in the Pines," featuring the Seven Sons of Harvard, was highlighted by a few songs from the faux pas and the crowning of lovely Caroline Bethea. The Holly Tea, sponsored by the Junior Deans, brought the weekend to a close.

The Outing Club is one of the most active clubs on campus. It provides activities both on and off campus for the students of WJC. This Fall there were three mountain climbs and, as winter set in, four ski trips were planned to Sunday River and Pleasant Mountain. The Outing Club also put on a fashion show with a ski movie to acquaint the girls with skiing. The Outing Club always finishes the season with the Annual Clam Hake at Fronts Neck. This year Judy Carleton led the1 council in planning all fun-filled events.

Basketball Team

The all-star basketball team this year was chosen in February at which time the girls went to Colby College to the annual playday. They played against Colby College, Bates College, and the University of Maine. On March 22 the girls wound u p the season with a 29-21 victory over the University of New Hampshire. Under the direction of our devoted coach, Mrs. Wacker, the team enjoyed their short but enthusiastic season. Sue Lancaster captained the team this year.

Volleyball Team

The all-star volleyball team was chosen in late February and consisted of twelve girls. Coach Wacker arranged games with Bates College and a playday with Colby College, Bates College, and the University of Maine. The playday was held at Colby College. The girls played only five times against other schools but they showed skilled performances, strong enthusiasm and excellent sportsmanship. The team was led by their captain elect, Anne McEldowney.

Fencing Team

T h e six members of the W J C fencing team this year are Jill Lunt, Sharon Nason, Brenda Quincy, Nancy Senecal, Sue Stacey, and Jan Sullivan. These girls executed good skills and excellent sportsmanship throughout the season. The first match involved competition with Brandeis University and Bradford Junior College. Westbrook placed second and Brandeis placed first. The second match was held on March 6th when W J C had accomplished all its aims by ranking at the top with Wellesley College second and Radcliffe in third place. Jackson and Bradford Junior also participated but did not place. The final endeavor of the season was at the Intercollegiate Fencing Match at Brandeis when Nancy Senecal received a medal for 3rd place in intermediate class. Sue Stacey also received honors. The team wishes to express its thanks to Coach Miller!

Badminton Team

The Badminton Team is a new addition this year. At Bates College they played two sets of doubles and won both those matches. At the University of New Hampshire they had three sets of doubles, two of which they lost. Considering that the team is new on our campus, they did very well. Each girl should be congratulated for a fine performance and excellent sportsmanship. Our new Mrs. Hughes is the advisor for our badminton team.

Tennis Team

The tennis team will get under way early this Spring. The girls chosen for the b a m will be busy with practices at least twice a week to prepare for a busy game schedule. The teams which have already been scheduled to compete against our WJC stars are Deering High School, Waynflete, South Portland High School, and Kents Hill. If time permits, we shall try to arrange matches with Plymouth State College and the University of New Hampshire. As we go to press, the team has not been chosen, but some of the anticipated players are Sue Lancaster, Peg Ellis, Betsy Power. Cindy Picken, Mary Ingham, and Nancy Borkow.
