DEDICATION

• • •

TO MR. ARTHUR FREUNDLICH, psychology instructor, advisor and friend, we, the Senior Class of 1962, dedicate our yearbook. In the challenging days of our stay at Westbrook, his warmth and sincerity have inspired each of us to continue reaching toward higher goals. Mr. Freundlich has constantly revealed his keen interest in the students as individuals, as, with deep understanding, he has helped us work out our own, often petty problems. Through his guidance and example, we have come to a better understanding of ourselves and the world in which we live. Mr. Freundlich's sincere interest in people extends beyond the limits of his active role at this college. In addition to teaching and guiding the students at Westbrook, he is a practicing psychologist and group therapist at the Maine Medical Center. Here too, Mr. Freundlich's unique insight and understanding bring a renewed sense of assurance to everyone with whom he is associated. In grateful appreciation of his enthusiasm, interest, and sincerity, so evident in the congenial smile and twinkling eyes familiar to us all, we are happy and proud to dedicate THE TOWER to Mr. Arthur Freundlich in 1962.

Foreword ... westbrook junior college, 1962--- CHANGE these past two years, the members of the D URING class of 1962 have witnessed a period of remarkable progress in the history of Westbrook Junior College. The traditional atmosphere of this friendly, individual-oriented college has inculcated a basic interest in learning, while the constant advancement evident on this campus has taught us that learning is a continuous and ever-changing process. Expansion in the established courses of study and the introduction of the new Dental Hygiene course have been a challenging stimulus to our education. As the Westbrook students have grown in understanding and responsibility, so the Westbrook campus has changed as a result of the far-sighted development program. The Dental Hygiene Building, begun in the early spring of our freshman year and dedicated in October, 1961, and the new student center, Oakey Logan Alexander Hall, begun this March, are visible evidence of Westbrook's answer to the demands of education in our world of phenomenal growth and development. T hus, by precept and example, the leaders of Westbrook have delineated the interest and application by which we may discern and bridge the vast semantic chasm between the "degree" and "education" we have obtained at Westbrook.

PRESIDENT OF THE COLLEGE

EDWARD YORK BLEWETT

The remarkable progress of Westbrook Junior College in the past three years has come about largely through the efforts of our capable administrator, President Blewett. His dedication to the present and future of this college is, like this year's convocation series, based upon the theme "New Horizons for the 60's." In the modem and fully equipped Dental Hygiene building, a new door of knowledge has been opened to Westbrook students as a result of Mr. Blewett's endeavors in the Anniversary Development Program. Another achievement through this program is now just rising on the V\Testbrook horizon. The new student center, dining area, and dormitory of Oakey Logan Alexander Hall will enable this college to uphold its traditions by opening ever more widely the Westbrook doors to knowledge. Thus, through President Blewett's leadership, students of Westbrook are able to see that beyond the horizon there is no setting sun, but rather, a rising sun - if we will only look far and hard enough.

Dean of the college ... Mr. Richard F. Bond In the past nine years, Dean Bond has combined his excellent ability and tireless effort in directing the academic functions of the college. For his constant willingness to discuss scholastic problems or future aspirations, and for his able guidance to adjustment and acceptance of responsibility, every Westbrook student is deeply grateful.

Dean of Residence Miss Margaret L. Giroux With sincerity and warmth of character, Dean Giroux has taught the girls of Westbrook how to live enjoyably and successfully as members of a community while retaining their individuality. In carrying out the varied functions of her office with understanding and practicality (underlined by a warm sense of humor), Dean Giroux has won the admiration and affection of us all.

.. Class officers . . Early in the fall the seniors cast their votes for their class officers. The results were Peggy Snow, a Day Hop, president; Winnie Gale of Bell House, vicepresident; Sue Thomas of Deering House, secretary; and Amity Peirce of Melville House, treasurer. These well-qualified girls were given a great deal of responsibility in leading their class through their last year at Westbrook. It was hard to believe that our last year at W.J.C. had

come and that in a very short time we would be facing the world on our own. The Christmas season was upon us before we knew it, bringing with it our traditional Christmas Weekend. After much planning and preparation, the entire school enjoyed the festivities of the long-awaited weekend. With the coming of spring, many of the ~eniors spent an enjoyable week in Bermuda basking in the sun. Climaxing our two years at W.J.C. was senior week with the excitement of graduation and the rather sad realization that the time had come when we all would part to travel our separate paths into the future.

.. Class officers . . After a period of adjusting to college life and meeting new friends, the freshman class elected their officers for their first year at Westbrook. Due to the great amount of responsibility that goes along with the honor of holding a class office, the students were careful to choose a select group of girls to represent the entire class. The results of the election were as follows: Elizabeth Johnston from Goddard Hall, president; Cynthia Chaffee, vice-president; Joyce MacDonald, secretary; and Judith Quist, treasurer, all from Hersey Hall. The winter months brought much excitement and enjoyment to all. Christmas activities, parties, and Christmas Weekend itself were events in which all participated. The campus turned green once again with the coming of spring, and preparations for May Weekend were begun by the freshman class. Given in honor of the seniors, the weekend was highlighted by the tapping of the Junior Deans. These freshman girls, chosen as examples of the Westbrook Way, will assist the student body and the college throughout the following year. With their first year of college life near completion, the freshmen leave for summer vacation with many fond memories. Their second year at W.J.C. will prove even more enjoyable and exciting, and they anxiously will await to return in the fall to meet their classmates and friends.

Day hops ... The Day Hops of the class of 1963 are a group of active, happy, and enthusiastic girls. From the opening day of school, an air of interest could be detected in each girl. In ensuing weeks, they participated in the Freshmen Talent Show, Parents' Weekend activities, the Day Hop Dance, food sale, Thanksgiving basket, and the Bruce Roberts Fund. All were successes due to the help of freshmen and seniors alike. In the early fall, an election meeting was held. Those freshmen elected to posts of honor are as follows: Bette Swett, vice-president and W AA representative; Margaret Werner, treasurer; Marilyn Stanley, Student Council representative; Priscilla Chase, alternate; and basketball inter-house captain, Jane Donovan. They are proud of their group. There is a wide variety of personalities, talents, and interests, but together they are a cooperating group in the Westbrook Family.

The thirty-one freshmen girls of Goddard Hall started their year together by electing house officers. The president is Elizabeth Milburn; vice-president, Donna Rowe; secretary, Carol Loth; treasurer, Joan Laflamme; social director, Sandra Beane; and student council representative, Mary Jane Calder. September was a month of meeting new people and experiencing new aspects of life. The excitement of the President's Reception and initiation, and later, Parents' \Veekend , Christmas \Veekend, and the many other fun-filled times will be long remembered. Our friendships and our admiration for Westbrook have grown, and we are proud to be a part of the Westbrook Family.

Houghton • • •

The fall of '61 found fifteen freshmen at Houghton Hall, eagerly looking forward to their first year of college. They immediately accepted the responsibilities of their co-op dorm, working closely with the seniors to achieve the spirit of friendliness and cooperation which is distinctively Houghton's. Orientation, initiation, and studies soon fell into place as they all adjusted to the Westbrook Way. The officers elected to lead Houghton were Jennifer Robbins, president; Sandra Vaughn , vice-president; Evelyn Greene, secretary; and Susan Abbot, treasurer. With the capable guidance of their house director, Mrs. Johnson, the girls have enjoyed a successful and beneficial year in Houghton.

76

With the Proctor spirit of friendship and cooperation, we elected as our officers: Bobbi Lynch, president; Pam Manning, vice-president; Jan Sayward, secretary; and Lucia Hansen, treasurer. During these past months of college life, we have had many wonderful experiences with Parents' Weekend, the traditional Christmas Weekend; and, of course, all the fabulous parties and get-togethers we have had with the "Proctor gang." Will we ever forget those "late" pizza parties or those exciting blind dates at Bowdoin? With all these pleasant memories of our first year at \Vestbrook, we are anxiously looking forward to our Senior year.

Under the direction of their officers, Peggy Snow, President; Jane Hallowell, Secretary; Helen Bibby, Treasurer; and Mr. William B. Jordan, Advisor, the International Relations Club has sponsored many activities for the college as a whole. In October, Mr. Torbin Anderson, a native of Denmark, discussed his experiences in Denmark during World War II. A student forum was held in January at which Dr. Zelma George discussed "The Negro, His Problems, Methods, and Goals." Later in the year a bridge party was held and the money donated was sent to CARE. A series of discussions with Foreign Exchange Students and movies concerning foreign countries were a part of the regular program for I.R.C. meetings.

The tapping of the Junior Deans is always a major event in the activities of May Weekend. It is the duty of these seniors to set the example of the "Westbrook Way." This is not an academic honor, but a social distinction, as Junior Deans are selected by the Westbrook family for their poise, leadership, and contributions to the college. J.D.'s are on hand to greet the freshmen and help them throughout the college year in adjusting to their new status. Whenever ushers or guides are needed, the Junior Deans come to the rescue. The J.D.'s sponsored the annual Holly Tea and sold Christmas address books, purchasing new blazers with the funds they raised in these and other college projects. In maintaining their honor and responsibility, the junior Deans work under the helpful guidance of their advisor, Dean Giroux; President, Beth Kendall; VicePresident, Pat Hunter; and Secretary, Bobby Spinner.

Student Council

Areas of interest and responsible concern for Westbrook were shown by the Student Council this year in sponsoring Parents' Weekend, Student-Faculty nights, and the Christmas party for underprivileged children. The Student Council is a fine example of democracy in action. With advice from Dean Bond and Dean Giroux, guidance from its officers, Diane Hinkley, President; Lu Jenson, Vice-President; and Marsha Ayres, Secretary, and action from its members, it fulfills its main purpose in listening to the voice of the students at Westbrook and upholding the traditional values of the Westbrook Way.

Within its eight issues, the W .J.C. News highlighted off and on campus activities with feature articles and student and faculty interviews. In the "Woman of the Month" articles, revealing a special senior personality who has displayed responsibility and leadership on campus, in the editorials, letters to the editor, and various other columns, the paper provided interest and stimulus for its readers and exhibited a professional touch which only hard work and concern can achieve. Under the direction of Miss Greta Kerr; Margaret P. Snow, Editor-in-Chief; Helen Bibby, Co-Editor; Jane Hallowell and Charlene Morris, Feature Editors; Madeline Frustaci, News Editor; Lu Jenson, Sports Editor; Patricia Hunter, Advertising Manager; Marilyn Lalumiere, Circulation Manager; and Rosemarie Rowell, Photographer; the W.J.C. The sincere appreciation of music manifests itself in the Faux Pas. The eleven members of this group, under the efficient and patient leadership of Mr. Richard Roberts, have brought much pleasure to college and community life this year, by performing at Parents' Weekend, Convocation, Retailing Fashion Show, Christmas, Winter Carnival, and May Weekends, and many off-campus engagements. Rehearsals held every Tuesday and Thursday night are enjoyed by the Faux Pas and give them the opportunity to make every performance pleasurable to their audiences.

On Tuesday evening of each week, the Dance Club held its workshop under the direction of Miss Gilmore and leadership of President, Janice Fahey, and Secretary-Treasurer, Joan Couillard. As a branch of the Women's Athletic Association, they participated in Christmas Convocation and May Weekend. Like last year, they attended a university workshop led by a professional instructor and, as we have seen, exhibit the skills and art of interpretive dancing gained by instruction and hard work.

The Women's Athletic Association is the largest club represented by the student body at Westbrook Junior College. One of the Association's main objectives is to earn enough money to offer a substantial scholarship to a worthy student who has contributed a great deal of time, interest, and enthusiasm to W.A.A. The organization sponsors inter-house softball, basketball, volleyball, and badminton tournaments to develop sportsmanship and school spirit. Highlighting the year's social activities is Winter Carnival with the crowning of the queen, a jazz concert, formal dance, and presentation of an award to the dorm with the best snow sculpture. W.A.A. was led this year by Linda Darling, President; Linda Whitney, VicePresident; Gretchen Rosendahl, Secretary; and Clare Evers, Treasurer. Miss Gilmore is the club advisor.
