DEDICATION

There are very f e w people that w e meet during the course of our lives whose advice a n d reassurance are able to lead us in the proper direction a n d show us the w a y to achieve our goals. From this small number there are f e w people whose w a r m personality a n d sincere interest in our futures can give us the courage to strive t o w a r d self-betterment a n d success. A m o n g these outstanding people there is one w h o is the symbol of the qualities which w e all admire a n d seek to a t t a i n : honesty, generosity, congeniality, kindness, and unending devotion. Because all w h o come to Westbrook Junior College agree that you are unmistakably the person so described, w e proudly dedicate this, the 1961 Tower, to you, M y r o n Hager, our Director of Admissions.

IN MEMORIAM

"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being — let me do it now. Let me not deter, nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." — Author Unknown You m a y ask w h a t is the Westbrook Spirit? expressed by a w o r d or group of words.

Yet it cannot be

It is the mark that comes

from spontaneous kindness which can only be shown through true devotion.

It is a n idea of giving help to others w i t h no thought of self

It is a n action which is never ending in personal satisfaction

It is Rupert J. Westcott, our beloved "Rupe,"

w h o will be fondly remembered for being the symbol of the undying spirit of Westbrook a n d the friendliness that prevails.

CLASS OF 1961

SENIOR OFFICERS

Left to Right:

C. Bellegarde, P. M a r s a w , S. Ramsburg, M . A . Barretta.

The election of Senior Class Officers was one of the first activities on the agenda for the class of 1 9 6 1 .

The results of the election: Sally Ramsburg, president;

Penny M a r s a w , vice-president; Claire Bellegarde, secretary; M a r y Anne Barretta, treasurer.

With this election came the realization that w e were all seniors and

in ten short months w e would graduate.

It was a happy thought but sad too as

it marks the end of our student life at W.J.C.

The next time w e return it would

be as Alumnae. Before w e had turned around twice the Christmas Dance was upon us. half a year gone!

Almost

Then came finals in January with much to our pleasant sur-

prise, thirty-six seniors on Dean Bond's prized list. Our next step was Bermuda or for those who preferred native land, Fort Lauderdale.

For the perennial skier there was North Conway or Stowe.

All too soon M a y Weekend and then graduation came.

As w e tried on our

caps and gowns many pensive faces were observed; but the excitement of Senior Week brightened us all and w e looked forward to Commencement with enthusiasm.

FRESHMAN OFFICERS

Left to Right:

S. V a n Kuren, B. Kendall, L. Jenson, A. Pierce.

After overcoming the initial impact of orientation, the freshmen of Westbrook settled down to the serious task of becoming adjusted to college life. For many, it was their first venture a w a y from home and the routines of studying, extracurricular activities and college life in general were very confusing. However, they managed to find themselves and elect as their officers: Beth Kendall, president; Lu Jenson, vice-president; Amity Pierce, secretary; and Suzanne Van Kuren, treasurer. December brought the Christmas Dance and Christmas vacation, both of which were anticipated. After returning from vacation, they found the problem of midyear exams facing them. These were not anticipated, but as the saying goes, "This too will pass." They did and it was time for Winter Carnival. The advent of spring brought plans for M a y Weekend, which was given by the freshmen in honor of the Senior class. This was a great success and as usual, the tapping of the Junior Deans was one of the most important events of the weekend. Now it is time for finals and the thought of summer vacation is second on the minds of all.

Then it will be home for the summer with the hope of returning

in the fall.

Among the things they have worked on aside from the regular campus

activities are the Day Hop Dance and tea.

They have shown their artistic ability

through participation in clubs, student sponsored activities, sports and the many other extracurricular activities of the campus. The Day Hops have elected as their officers: Martha Galbraith, president; M a r y Lou St. Peter, vice-president; Robin Shaw, secretary; and Jane Hallowell, treasurer. With the adequate help of the seniors, the freshmen have been able to learn much that will help them to carry on the friendly spirit through their senior year.

eing members of the newest house on campus, the mixture of freshmen and seniors has proved very beneficial to all concerned in participating in many of the campus activities.

The girls have become almost sisters to one another under

the guidance of their house director, Mrs. Blair.

Among other things they seem to

be avid animal lovers and have found that this has its drawbacks. The girls who were chosen to lead Donnelly were Sandy Ross, president; Shally McCarron, vice-president; Donna Anderson, treasurer; and Linda Cassey, secretary.

The girls formed a close and lasting relationship that will not be forgotten.

They elected as their house offi-

cers: Beth Kendall, president; Sandy DeCiccio, vice-president; Polly Pugsley, treasurer; and Carol Williams, secretary.

They have done many things to make Mrs.

The Junior Deans, better known as J. D.'s, are a combination of hostesses, guides, and representatives of Westbrook.

They are the first examples of W. J. C.

that freshmen meet upon their arrival in September.

The Junior Deans are

responsible for orienting the freshmen in the Westbrook spirit, making them feel at home, and setting the tone of behavior.

Because of the responsibility placed

on a Junior Dean, there can be no greater honor than to be "tapped" a J. D. at the traditional ceremony during M a y Weekend. Through the able guidance of their officers, Delanne Abbott, president; Claire Bellegarde, vice-president; Joanne Berest, secretary; and their advisors, Dean Giroux and Dean Bond, the J. D.'s have done much to foster the Westbrook Ideal.

after those games, and also good prospects for an excellent basketball team. On the varsity basketball team were Hilary Nowers, Dotty Kasprow, Sandy Musgrove, Barbara Smith, Gretchen Rosendhal, Brenda Moody, Gail Wilkes, Lu Jenson, Mimi Leighton, Sandy Sawyer, Deidre Bullard, Linda Darling, and Sue Robinson. The team played some rough competition among whom were Plymouth State Teachers' College and Husson.

The team is directed in all competition

practice by Miss Jean Gilmore and Miss Nancy Gilman.

The weekend festivities began with an auction of faculty services on Friday. Then Saturday morning a coffee hour given by President and Mrs. Blewett at Hollister House set the mood of friendliness so typical of Westbrook Junior College. The traditional talent show was given, thoroughly enjoyed by all, and of course there was the smoker competition, helping to end the weekend with excitement and fond memories.

CHRISTMAS WEEKEND

W h a t could set a more delightful atmosphere for this year's Christmas weekend than "Mistletoe Mist."

Even the weather was cooperative.

This year, for the first time, a buffet and a dance were held at the Eastland Hotel, which was beautifully decorated to suit the theme of the weekend. Of course, there were many house parties and the traditional carol sing was held on the mall. held on campus.

The carol sing is perhaps one of the most memorable events There is a true feeling of togetherness and

WINTER CARNIVAL

WINTER

CARNIVAL

Just as winter seems unbearable and all students wish it would

disappear,

there is a sudden pleading cry for more snow, and everyone knows it's time for Winter Carnival.

This year was no exception, and w e all held our breath for

fear of any snow melting.

But in spite of any adversities, "Wonderland

by

Night" went along as smooth as clock work. The weekend began with an ice show, jazz festival, and house parties on Friday.

Of course, no one would miss the Alumnae-Varsity basketball game on

Saturday.

Saturday, the "piece de resistance," the carnival formal, and at long

last came the crowning of the queen. All good things must come to an end and many sad goodbyes were said on Sunday, a hallmark of a successful weekend.

MAY WEEKEND

"Oriental Fantasy" was the theme chosen by the class of '61 for M a y Weekend. This was an especially exciting weekend for the Freshmen class because thirteen lucky members would be tapped Junior Deans. This weekend was marked by picnics, the freshmen talent show, the awards assembly, and of course the formal at the Portland Club. It was a memorable weekend for everyone but particularly so for the new J.D/s and our M a y Queen.
