WESTBROOK

JUNIOR

PORTLAND, MAINE

COLLEGE

Jj>sdiaaHon

The class of 1950 gratefully dedicates this book to Miss Janet Smith in appreciation of the training she has given us, preparing us to enter the adult world. In her position as head of the secretarial science department, she has helped to mould the characters and guide the careers of countless Westbrook girls. Her gracious, considerate manner and heartfelt interest in our problems has led many of us to regard her as a friend as well as an instructor.

To You MISS JANET SMITH

MISS J A N E T S M I T H

"And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." Corinthians 13:13

TO RODDY To but a loving memory We consecrate these lines, A friendly bark and wagging tail That cheered us at all times. A dog not young, and yet not old, His master's truest friend, He left in Jerry's heart a tear That time will never mend. And so, we mean to hold you close In memory, old pal, You made a grand impression, boy As only true friends shall. A. B. C

ALUMNI HALL IN WINTER GODDARD HALL

A hearty welcome to you! After following our Seniors through two years at Westbrook Junior College, I would like to have you follow me while I show you how an average day is spent. W e will see some of their clubs, (changing our shoes for each activity,) wander into the various houses, see a few informal shots of the girls, and finally get a peek at the Seniors. W e will stumble into the cafe for something to keep us going, and finally run to catch the bus home. I hope you will enjoy travelling with me. Are you ready? W e have got a lot to do before we reach the end of our journey, for these girls, Seniors and Freshmen, find many ways to keep themselves busy. Now watch your step. Here we go!

A Westbrook. Girl Is Faithful To The Highest Her School, Her Family, And Herself."

Ideals Of Her Church,

Her

Country,

Before we step onto the next page, and see the activities in which the girls participate, I would like you to learn something about them. T h e policy of W . J . C . is to develop the individual socially as well as scholastically. W . J . C . believes that the girls, by taking p a r t in the various clubs and organizations, will learn sportsmanship, team-work, the ability to get along with others, and the importance of fair play. Personal and team accomplishments are many, and each girl has a chance to prove herself. J u s t follow me and you will see. Y o u will see her in many different activities, each one of which has added in some way to her character.

GLEE CLUB Under the supervision of Director Rupert Neily, this year's Glee Club has risen to musical heights greater than ever before. Concerts were given at the Portland Men's club and the Kiwanis club. In February, a very successful concert was offered in Augusta, and in March, the annual Lenten concert at St. Luke's church was presented. Climaxing the season was the presentation of a concert at the Boston Pops in May. Campus programs included the weekly chapel music, and the Christmas pageant. The officers for the year were: Winifred Clark, president; Mary Lou Jackson, vice president; Joyce Cole, secretary; Gay Adams, treasurer; Marilyn Bennett, librarian, and Linda Norton, manager. The club is deeply appreciative to Mr. Neily, and to Miss Margaret Hotaling, accompanist. Westbrook's Glee Club is fast making a fine reputation for itself and is considered one of the best in New England.

RETAILING CLUB T h e newly organized Retailing club is open to all students in the Retailing course. T h e meetings have been held twice a month, during which time, demonstrations and lectures by guest speakers were offered. As a part of the Retailing course, the members of the club, instead of returning to school after Thanksgiving, worked in department stores in their home towns until Christmas. T h e y gained valuable experience in their chosen field. Early in the fall, the club sponsored a fashion show through the courtesy of Porteous, Mitchell, and Braun, which was held in M o u l t o n Chapel. T o wind up the years activities, a field trip was planned in the spring. T h e officers chosen for the year were: Joyce Maguire, president; M a r g e r y Keefe, vice president; H e l e n Stevenson, secretary; N a n c y Lord, treasurer. Miss Elizabeth Hatfield was Faculty advisor.

STUDENT CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION T h e Student Christian Association is organized to bring to its members not only religious and solemn moments, but also many good times. T h i s club discusses

different

faiths and their functions, as well as other problems which may arise, whether religious or social. T h e members sponsor the Chapel services, panel discussions, fellowship hours, S u n d a y candle-light services, a Christmas service, and many other meetings t h r o u g h o u t the year. D u r i n g the course of the past year, the club planned many open meetings to which everyone on campus was invited. A m o n g the speakers were M r . Harrison Lakin, lecturer on international affairs, M r . James Shute, of the sociology department, Miss Betty Johns, staff member of the N e w England Student Christian movement, and Miss Odile Sweeney, of the N a t i o n a l Student Y W C A . T h e officers for this year included: Gay A d a m s , president; Jeannette Crooker, vice president; Carolyn Chellis, secretary; Cynthia Ewell, treasurer; Dorothy Carvalho and Betsy H u n t e r , program chairmen, and Jeannette Crooker, chairman of the hour. Miss Elizabeth W a d e was Faculty advisor.

LE CERCLE FRANCAIS W e s t b r o o k ' s French club, Le Cercle Francais, under the direction of Miss Elizabeth W a d e , this year has more than accomplished its objectives, to broaden and stimulate the interest of the students in inter-cultural relationships between the U n i t e d States and other countries, and to promote better understanding of these countries by studying their ideas, customs, and habits. As a result, notebooks containing such material were prepared and sent to French students this year in return for those received the previous summer from France, illustrating this club's contribution to W . J . C . ' s good neighbor policy.

SPANISH CLUB T h e Spanish club held its meetings every other M o n d a y in Hersey 106. These meetings consisted of business discussions and plans for coming events, which were to be sponsored by the members. Participating in the Christmas festivities with the various houses and clubs, the members sang an original Spanish carol, " A g u i n a l d o . " M r . Edward Victor, of the science department, was guest speaker at two meetings. H e gave a very interesting and educational talk on "Life in Puerto Rico," where he taught school for a year before coming to W . J . C . T h e officers of the club were: Jadine Raynes, president; Alice Bean, treasurer, and Jeanne Cloutier, secretary. Miss J u d i t h Lourie was Faculty advisor.

RIDING CLUB T h e W a n a k e a Riding club was one of the most active groups on campus this year with a membership of 35 girls. M r . and M r s . Instruction in jumping, equitation, and show riding was available to members with special permission. In the fall, a G y m k a n a was held in which all the girls, beginners, intermediates, and advanced pupils participated. T h e winners in the beginner's class were: first prize, Beverly Barclay; second prize, Bonnie Neely; third prize, Jean T h o m p s o n ; fourth prize, Connie Lou Reynolds. Prize winners in the cantering and balancing tests were Audrey W h i t i n g , Beverly Barclay, M a r y Jipson, and Jean Clark. VARSITY HOCKEY T h e varsity hockey team of W . J. C. had a successful season with two wins, one tie, and one loss. T h e record, however, does not show the fighting spirit, hard work, and cooperation which the girls displayed in each game. Members of the team were as follows: Ella Gardner, Pamela T h a y e r , J u d i t h Eames, Muriel T r o y , N a n c y Rees, Jean Turnier, Cynthia Ewell, M a r y Louise M a r k s , Cordelia H o w e , Jane A d a m s , Alice Bean, Johanne Schumaker, and Joan G r a h a m . SKI CLUB W i t h the beginning of fall sports activities, skiing took a front stand in the hearts of many of the girls at W e s t b r o o k . A roster of girls who were fortunate to be elected to the hold the posts for the 1949-1950 season were: Jean T u r n i e r , president; Elizabeth Penfield, vice president; Beverly Barclay, treasurer, and Barbara McClintock, secretary. Eleven girls were also chosen to act as representatives from the different houses. T h e y were Jacqueline Brown of G o d d a r d , Barbara McClintock and M a r y Ruddick of Hersey, Ruth Bankus of Deering, N a n c y Marshall representing both Johnson and Seventeen, Joyce de Goey of Melville, Joan Barry of Lodge, Elizabeth Penfield of Bell, Elizabeth Dixon of H o u g h t o n , Roberta Staples of W h i t m a n , and the D a y Students representative was Carolyn Borstel. T h e lack of snow was a definite handicap to the students who wished to participate in the skiing activities, but as the season progressed, M r . George Albert, the ski instructor, was able to make trips to such places as Dyke, Gorham, Bridgton, Black-Strap and M t . W a s h i n g t o n , with groups of girls who wished to indulge in the thrills of the sport. T h r o u g h o u t the course of the year, the club has been afforded the chance to show some very excellent movies. I t has also sponsored several informal get-togethers. A most hearty thanks from the entire club is extended to both Miss Deland and M r . Albert, for it was they who did so much toward making this year at W e s t b r o o k the tremendous success it was in the field of skiing.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB The I.R.C. offers students an opportunity to meet in an informal group to discuss current world affairs. The aim of the club is to develop a better understanding of the effects of world affairs upon the individual. The club is affiliated with the International Relations groups sponsored by the Carnegie Endowment Fund. Six times during the college year the club sponsored the travelling lecturer and reporter, Mr. Harrison Lakin, formerly of the American Diplomatic Service. His timely lectures have been of great informational value and interest to club members as well as nonmembers, for they were open to all students. Supplementary movies, speakers, and informal Sunday night get-togethers have served to point up, heighten interest, and increase knowledge of the studies of each particular topic. Under the direction of Photine Chaltas, president; Patricia Proudfoot, secretary, and Edith Osgood, treasurer, the club met twice a month for a program. This year the club was directed by Mr. Thomas Stotler.

OUTING CLUB A new association aroused the outdoor enthusiasts of W e s t b r o o k Junior College this year

the O u t i n g C l u b .

Approximately two hundred members, including Faculty and students, joined the organization and participated in the numerous events taking place throughout the year. Officers elected were: Irene M c C u r d y , president; Lois Havenstein, vice president; Jeanne Cloutier, secretary, and Barbara Wilson, treasurer. T h e governing board consisted of eight Seniors; Jean Clark, Betsy D o d d s , Bettine H a r l o w , Jean Turnier, Bertyne Rice, M a r t h a Sylvester, Florence Taylor, and Jane Adams. In charge of publicity was Joyce Cole, trip manager was Marilyn Patten, and Faith LaFleur was transportation leader. D u r i n g the board meetings, which were held every week, plans for the weekly trips were discussed. Included in the activities of the club was a dance, held in M c A r t h u r gymnasium to which students of the University of Maine, Portland Junior College, and

Bowdoin

were invited. A hike u p Douglas M o u n t a i n was the first trip of the year; the second was a climb up M o u n t W a s h i n g t o n . Following these were a cruise to Casco Bay, a trip to Sebago Lake and a hayride with Portland Junior College. T h e O u t i n g Club also sponsored many ski trips which continued through February and M a r c h . For spring they planned more camping hikes and mountain climbing.

A Westbrook Girl Cultivates Qualities And Responsibilities Of Leadership In Her self And Others."

We are about to see the girls who have been chosen by their fellow students to lead them in their campus organizations. These girls are typical of all our girls, but they have the quality of leadership. They have all done a great job, so let's move on and take a look.

STUDENT COUNCIL The aim of the Student Council is to bring about general improvements in the college routine by acting upon student and Faculty suggestions. It serves to maintain an equilibrium between the college administration and the student body. It discusses and tries to settle the problems of the student's campus life. The Student Council met with it's advisor, Dean Dwyer, every two weeks in Hersey 106. Students were represented by five Seniors and three Freshmen under the presidency of Barbara Cushing. This year the Council devoted much of its time to the drawing up of a constitution designed to embrace and reinforce the principals for which the Council stands. It is to be the foundation upon which future classes can build democratic college life. Under this new constitution the association will be enlarged to include a Senate composed of representatives from clubs, houses, and faculty. In the spring, the Student Council elected students to be awarded special honors at graduation for outstanding contributions and participation in college life.

A Westbrook Girl Is Straightforward

Really watch your step now. W e are about to enter the various houses on campus and see how the girls live. They have all had their petty tiffs and disagreements, but when it comes right down to it, you won't find a closer group of friends. It is here they have learned to live together, to give and take. No matter what mood they are in, or what they are doing, they are a pretty special group of girls. Step along now, and see for yourself.

DAY STUDENTS T h e first thing you notice when you enter the day room is a group of girls relaxing on the couch with their knitting in their hands . . . knitting, knitting, knitting

socks

for H e r b and Dick, or mittens for Neil . . . or you will find some of the girls gathered around the piano singing to Bev W i t h e e ' s accompaniment . . . remember " Y o u ' r e Breaking M y H e a r t " and "Let's T a k e an O l d Fashioned W a l k " ? . . . N a n c y T h o m p s o n , vice-president of the class, N a n c y Richardson, recording secretary, Bev Morris, treasurer, and Shirley Johnson, representative to the residence board . . . but we had our heartbreaks as well as periods of happiness this past year. Remember Eleanor's broken romance with W a r r e n . . . Peg's disagreement with Dick . . . Shirley's misunderstanding with A r t . . . M a r y ' s doubts about Vincent . . . and Phyl's fight with Arnie? . . . we'll never forget Linda's excitement when she showed us her ring after the Christmas formal, or Gini's radiant face when she was going to see B u d ? A n d how many times did we bid farewell to M a r t h a and Lucy when they were going away to M a i n e for a weekend? H e r e ' s wishing all the luck possible to Carmel and Eddie as they start out on their marriage, and we'll also miss Annette Sanborn, but we'll look forward to seeing her wedding announcement in the paper soon.

DORM LIFE Dorm life is hard to describe . . . it is compounded of many things — of bells ringing at odd hours, of friendship, of spontaneous singing, of underground feuds which now and again explode to the surface. It is the morning you overslept your first period class, the partner who struggled to make your five diamond bid, the studying you should have done, but entered the gab fest instead. It is the odd selection of "valuables" clutched by girls in an unexpected fire drill, the welcome sympathy received when something goes wrong, and the shared happiness when all is well, the night you were all ready to take a bath and discovered there was no more hot water. It is most active at ten o'clock when you gather to talk. It means fads which spread like wildfire through a dorm and then die out in a week; it is the pie beds made on a certain few; the sudden hush when the telephone rings. It is the night you cut your hair, the friendly quarrels that somehow hold us closer together, the sleepy trips to first breakfast. It is regulated by bells, clocks, or watches that are different in every dorm and academic building. It is cooperation and friendliness that keeps things running smoothly, going out on a big date attired in the possessions of every girl in the dorm, the chorus of voices that calls the poor unfortunate about to leave for the caf. Dorm life is that strange sense of belonging that you have as one of a group of girls, and the feeling of isolation you have when you go home and have a bathroom to yourself. It is the hurried dash to meet the time deadline, and then finding out you're already late — midweeks lost as a result; the butterflies in your stomach as you wait for a blind date, the nights you have to get up because you forgot it was your turn for smoker duty, the nice spring days you have to make-up chapels which you neglected during the winter. It is canned fruit juice at breakfast, that last cigarette before the smoker closes. It is corsages on window sills, and cold floors, and six people in your room when you are trying to study . . . the almost unbearable monotony of spring term. It is a reception room full of dates on late permission nights and someone yelling from the first floor to the third. It is the hungry rush for mail twice a day and the excitement of an unexpected letter or visitor. It is tomorrow and yesterday always the same — even the lunch menu — but it's dorm life and we love it.

meet the Seniors. These girls, who have gone through two years together, have learned many things which will be important to them in the years to come. I n the classroom, the dorm, and socially, they have realized the importance of working and living together in harmony. These girls represent a cross section of America, and if the rest of the girls are like these, we will have a fine world. These girls are now ready to leave W . J . Here we are on the last page. If you've stepped carefully in my footsteps you have a good idea of life at W.J.C. Anytime you think you can make the trip again, put on your walking shoes, open the book, and follow me. As you've found out, it's a little hard footing at times, but if you're on the right path everything works out for the best. I've got to take off my shoes, and soak my feet now, but the next time you want to tread the beaten path, I'll be ready to lead you again.
