SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Graduation? omigosh! T w o whole years gone by . . . remember how far away it seemed when we were Frosh of only a week? . . . and now we're graduating Seniors . . . it's been a perfect "last" year though . . . we watched the Freshmen register amid familiar confusion . . .

it was wonderful not to be the

ones who were lost . . . Senior houses were a novelty and helped along our newfound Senior ego . . . open house for the Frosh and company manners . . . first impressions are important . . . we lived for Freshman week and breakfasted in bed for five days . . . " H e y , Frosh, Blackout!" . . . our own keys and our own mailboxes . . . strained eyes and lost keys . . . the president's tea with we Seniors as the hostesses . . . our first taste of Senior importance . . . snow came early and we began freezing . . . our second Thanksgiving at college . . . Thanksgiving and Christmas formal combined and a howling success . . . proceeds to the Senior class which were certainly welcome . . . the W A C recruiting program went on the air and Westbrook composed the cast . . . the

college too had its program . . . " 7 : 4 5 , kids; d o n ' t forget to listen" . . . home for a glorious four weeks and then back to—ytip, exams! . . . coffee . . . " J u s t think, kids, after these we've only got finals to g o " . . . semester marks and our exam weekend . . . then our long awaited Senior meeting and Senior privileges . . . i i : i 5 ' s every night, blanket permission cards, long week-ends . . . " H e y , Freshmen, last in line for l u n c h ! " . . . circles under our eyes and dozing in class—and we went to bed a few nights at 10:30 . . . winter carnival and Senior houses took all top honors . . .

ice sculptures, skits . . . Dean

Melville commended us on our dress-for-dinner example and our class spirit and morale went up ten degrees anyway . . . dinner tickets, rooms for dates . . . all was "old stuff" for our dances and we gave advice profusely . . . more snow, more ice . . . "Doesn't spring ever come?" . . . the O. D . T. clamped down on travel and week-ends became a precious commodity . . . more than one weekend and you have to petition the absence committee in person . . . " G o s h ! " . . . Senior class dues . . . pay twice if you didn't pay last year . . . T O W E R elections and the yearbook contest . . . graduation pictures . . . sweaters or white blouses? . . . "Does my hair really look all r i g h t ? " . . . the armory burned and a new h a u n t for the graduation dance was sought . . . Cigarettes in the cafe and bookstore on Wednesdays . . . "I'll swap a Phillip Morris for a C a m e l " . . . the cigarette shortage had really found

us . . . Portland an-

nounced the Madam George Sand contest and Westbrook searched for applicants . . . we filled out blanks for the T O W E R . . . "Lessee, name, address, course" . . . " W h a t on earth can I say about my r o o m y ? " . . . the N a v y gave us a turkey dinner, a dance with an orchestra and the promise of future dates . . . T u r k e y 'n all the fixings! . . . the weather improved and riders t h o u g h t about the drill team while ski enthusiasts went spring skiing . . . maroon and grey tournaments were scheduled and played off . . . bowling, badminton, tennis, hockey . . . interviews with Mrs. Osmer about jobs . . . Senior conferences with the Dean . . . last minute retakes on our graduation pictures . . . books sold to Freshmen . . . last classes, last meetings . . . somehow everything seems to be a "last" . . . it's exciting yet sad at the same time . . . "we're going to miss those chapel bells and trees" . . . interhouse sing . . . spring vacation . . . finals . . . parents, teas, gifts . . . trunks and boxes . . . " H o w ' l l I ever get everything i n ? " . . . "This is my mom and d a d " . . . addresses, graduation pictures exchanged, plans for reunions . . . that last hectic week . . . the horse show, graduation prom . . . caps and gowns . . . you're graduating, no graduate^/ . . . it's all over now . . .

it's been wonderful fun right through

. . . not good-bye either 'cause we'll be back.

G/^ C7//£ W h e n we leave here, there will be plenty of memories . . . the dorms . . . Senior houses . . . studies . . . the cafe . . . and loads more. But to those of us w h o are members, the glee club will undoubtedly be the most outstanding. Mr. Neily's inevitable, " h n g " . . . little bits of his m a n y interesting experiences now and then . . .

all added up to a very inspiring year. W i t h the help of the

new voices added last September, we really had a powerful club. O u r concerts at Williston, the Rossini Club, St. Luke's, Portland Club . . . and more . . .

all were successful and fun, too.

A smile from our maestro at the end of a rehearsal or concert was all we needed to spur us on. After we're gone, the club will go on . . . without our voices, yes . . . b u t not without our spirit.

The highlight of the year, w i t h o u t a doubt, was the fashion show presented in conjunction with Filene's Dept. Store: with members of the club modeling. Social entertainment entered into the circular of the club with the presentation of dances t h r o u g h o u t the year. The officers were: President, Iranette Leigh t o n ; Ways and Means C o m m i t tee, Maxine MacMillan, and Jean Berger.

Manners and Mores We had our problems . . . dress on campus . . . who goes into lunch first; right line, left line? . . . conduct in public . . . Senior Privileges. The Student Council The Student Council is a campus organization which represents the girls of Westbrook Junior College in all matters where student opinion is desired.

It

also carries the students' problems to the faculty, represented by D r . Proctor, for an arbitrary settlement. The Council is composed of five members, including three Seniors:

Nancy

Richardson, chairman; Beverly Rowe, and Jean Davis, and t w o Freshmen, Millicent Thorne and Cynthia White. These girls represent both the Resident and D a y students. Its biggest job this year was that of determining the spring vacation traveling schedule of each girl in order to conform with the rulings of the Office of Defense Transportation. We were asked to cut down on traveling this spring whenever and wherever possible and through the cooperation of the students a satisfactory scheme was worked out whereby much valuable space on the trains was saved.

But to those who may watch, there is one star u n k n o w n T h a t is black to the keen seeker's sight, Whose brightness shines down on all them who alone, W i t h the day will not rise from the night. Books grown yellow and grey with years, Enshelved and stored as in deathly biers. Furniture all dust and mold. In stagnant idleness grown old. Rugs that, faded, bear grotesque Their former Greek and Arabesque. Cabinets, their maker's pride, Decaying leaves of knowledge hide. This chamber sore-eyed learning binds W i t h aching labors, thirsting minds. W h e n first was opened a volume fresh, From lifeless paper to living flesh, This old room watched through countless hours, As guards might watch from ancient towers, Of book and reader the progress grow, As lit by candle or dawning glow. HONORABLE MENTION THE

TRANSFER

She had always remembered the bus ride, for it had marked her first accomplishment on her own, and the trip had m e a n t not one bus b u t two. H e r mother's last words had r u n g in her ear as she stood by the white post, her dime clutched in a warm, c h u b b y hand. " D o n ' t forget to get your transfer, D e a r . " She had been terribly afraid as she waited for the lumbering bus to come in sight, and yet excitement kept her fear in the background. The short trip seemed as to another w o r l d — n e w people, new sights and new experiences. There had been no idea in her eight-year-old mind as to w h a t the people would be like, what the sights would be, what experiences she would have. She had hardly realized that she would undergo all this, yet the feeling had been there. For one frantic instant, as she saw the huge cream and red bus appear around the corner, she had wanted to t u r n and run. But she didn't. The doors of the vehicle had opened with a short hiss and then, miracle of miracles, the tall, thin m a n in the driver's seat had smiled at her as she labored up the one step. She had p u t her dime in the shiny slot, carefully, and then smiled back at him. H e h a d n ' t seemed terrifying or forbidding as she had imagined but rather like her daddy, only not as nice of course. Very carefully she had made her way down the aisle, scanning the faces of the occupants, some of whom she decided she might like very m u c h and some that she didn't like at all. She settled herself very primly, placing the small, red pocketbook across her knees and gazing eagerly out of the window. Many of the people turned to nod to her, but she hesitated before nodding back; mother had always said to be slow with strangers. The scenery went b y ; the occupants of the bus changed. T h r o u g h it all she had sat wide-eyed, viewing the good and the bad. She had seen poverty and wealth, cleanliness and dirt, beauty and ugliness, all in the short space of the t w e n t y - m i n u t e ride. She h a d n ' t realized it then of course, b u t somehow, somewhere, she had become part of that crowd. Unconsciously, she had seen and accepted the world on her own. She had realized the feeling of pleasant anticipation, though, as she followed the passengers down the aisle at the end of the line. The sense of accomplishment, of something gained, had filled her. The next lap wouldn't be quite as hard because now she was educated for it. She had reached for her transfer with all the trust and eagerness of an eight-year-old embarking on something new which she knows she is equal to. And now today, no other thought, no other memory, seemed to lit the present m o m e n t so well, when she reached for her diploma in the hand ot the college president. By S O N N Y C o m N .
