MOTUS 1973 The Fourteenth Volume St. Francis College Biddeford, Maine

June 7, 1973
PRESIDENT
To the Class of 1973: I regret that my first year at Saint Francis College has been your last. I would I ike to have gotten to know you much better than has been possible in a year marked by the hectic pace of preparing for sweeping changes in the direction and curriculum of the College. The moments for leisurely conversation and casual meetings have been far too few, but I cherish those that did occur because they have given me an und e rstanding of what a re markable group of people the Class of '73 is. Yours is a class with characte r (and c e rtainly mo re th a n its sha re o f characters). In my office, the cafeteria, the halls of Decary, the 11 hang 11 , at the Winter Weeke nd dance - Wt ."'rever I have met you as individuals or in groups - I have been impressed with your candor, your humor, your warmth, most of all your sense of identity. You have lived through fo ur o f th e most diffic ult y e ars in th e history of American higher education, and certainly four very trying years for Saint Francis as a college. On the national sc e ne th e re were protests, sit-ins, teach-ins, riots, beatings, even death; internally, the College underwent a crisis of purpose and leadership that threatened its very existence. Yet you found it within yourselves to come to terms with it all and emerged with a heighte ned awareness and a sense of purpose that be li es your yo uth. Yo u are uniquely ready for a world of un certainty and often painful choices because you have already coped with these, and done it sucessfully. We will mi ss you at Saint Francis College. Your maturity, adaptability and insight would be invaluable in helping us make the changes that will assure the future and advance the distinctiveness of Saint Francis College in the 1970's and beyond. Though you will be pursuing your own new directions in the future, we hope that the progress of Saint Francis College will always give you cause for just pride and that the classes that follow you here will emulate the contribution you have made to this college. Re me mb er to keep in touch. There are many people at Saint Francis College who care about you, and always will. Sincerely,
2
Robert L. Horn President
We dedicate this year's Motus to AI Shinkel. Though only in his first year here at St. Francis he has demonstrated a willingness to always be helpful and unselfish with both his time and himself. There fore, we would like to dedicate this yearbook as a token of our appreciation to a true gentleman. Motus Staff 73
Dedication
s
In retrospect of my four years at St. Francis, there are certain aspects to life of which I have become aware. Each one of us plays a significant role in the lives of others. We are the keys which are able to unlock the doors to each others lives but we allow these doors to stay locked because of foolish and petty barriers. Unfortunately, we tend to realize this after it is too late. For myself and, I hope for others this is a book of memories, memories of bitter cold nights, of frustrations and accomplishments. These are memories which I hope never become too distant from me so that I don't revive them during quiet moments. I feel that the " 73 Motus" is a fairly complete work of the people and events of St. Francis. It is a journal of events that I hope will remind us that we are all in a situation that will be much easier and interesting to live in if we really attempt to understand each other. If we do this, life at St. Francis will become more of a true community than just a community. We are gathering memories of a time in our lives which went by so quickly and will never return . In conclusion, I would like to thank the people who helped me learn and live by sharing their experiences with me . Yours truly, Mike Mannion
