MARKET REPORT

boAt Again Becomes No. 1 TWS Earphone Brand In India With 39.3% Market Share In Q421(Oct-Dec) India-based brands cemented their position, with four out of the top five spots. BoAt on its own gave about half of the market volumes, up from 30.1% in the same period a year ago.

According to the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) India Monthly Wearable Device Tracker , India’s truly wireless stereo (TWS) market witnessed a record year, shipping 20.3 million units with a healthy 74.7% YoY (year-over-year) growth in 2021. The pandemic driven use cases continued to generate the demand for smart audio devices, with tripled shipments YoY in the first half of the year. Festive discounts, competitive pricing, multiple launches and new entrants led to strong adoption in the latter part of the year. In 2021, the India-based vendors captured over 65% shipments in the TWS category, compared to about half of the market last year. BoAt emerged as the leader with two-fifth of the shipments during the year, which is more than the combined share of the next seven vendors. Aggressive entry and expansion through the online channel allowed these newage brands to collectively bring down TWS ASP to $32.8 in 2021, from $43.6 in 2020, resulting in nearly 90% of the TWS category to be below the $50 price band. However, the encouraging reception of new brands viz Nothing, Google, and LG electronics shows consumer enthusiasm in the mid-end segment. In Q421(Oct-Dec) India-based brands cemented their position, with four out of the top five spots. BoAt on its own gave

MARKET REPORT

Xiaomi Retains Its Leadership Position In Indian Smartphone Market With 22% Market Share With 81 million units, the online channel registered 13% YoY growth, surpassing the offline channel. This was driven by heavy marketing and initiatives like multiple sales festivals, attractive financing schemes, cashback & exchange offers, and trade-in programs.

According to the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, India shipped 161 million smartphones in 2021. This was up by 7% YoY (year-over-year), even as supply and pandemic related challenges created disruptions during the year. 2021 started strong with pent-up demand from 2H20 (Jul- Dec)and positive sentiments around vaccinations but a severe second wave of Covid-19 dealt a blow to the growth. Constrained supplies resulted in low inventories across channels in the second half of the year, which usually has a high demand during the festive season. 1Q22 (Jan-Mar) is expected to remain flat YoY amidst a low seasonal demand and a mild impact of the ongoing third wave of Covid-19, which will give the brands time to replenish their inventories. The transition from 4G to 5G will continue to drive growth, though still restricted to mid and high-tier price segments. “Consumers continue to demand better features like the camera, battery, and processors over 5G capability in the entry-level price segments. The large feature phone base will remain crucial but elusive to the smartphone market in the absence of any affordable offerings at the entry-level,” said Upasana Joshi, Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India. Key highlights of 2021 included: • With 81 million units, the online channel registered 13% YoY growth, surpassing the offline channel. This was driven by heavy marketing and initiatives like multiple sales festivals, attractive financing schemes, cashback & exchange offers, and tradein programs. While the offline channel contracted in 2021, IDC expects offline shipments to recover some lost ground in 2022. • MediaTek-based smartphones recorded a 54% market share, creating a bigger lead over Qualcomm with more than 85% of its smartphones below US$200. UNISOC regained some momentum reaching a 7% share, up from 2% in the previous years. • ASPs peaked at US$190, growing by 15% annually. The share of the premium www.digitalterminal.in

segment doubled from a year ago to 4% in 2021, growing by more than 100% annually, largely due to higher Apple shipments. The sub-US$100 was the only segment to decline YoY. IDC expects ASPs in 2022 to be high due to the rising cost of components and higher share of 5G smartphones. Top 5 Smartphone Vendor Highlights Xiaomi maintained its leadership position for four consecutive years with 40 million units, though declining by 1.5% YoY in 2021. Poco, Xiaomi’s sub-brand, emerged as the fastest growing online brand amongst the top five with 51% YoY growth. The entry-level models, Redmi 9A/9 Power/9, were the major volume drivers. Better supplies and a focus on offline channels should help drive growth for Xiaomi in 2022. Samsung, at the second slot, registered a YoY decline of 6% in 2021, shipping 28 million units. There were persistent supply constraints especially for Galaxy A series in the low to mid-price segment, and for foldable devices in the premium segment. However, Samsung led the 5G segment with a 21% share, driven by the Galaxy A22, M32, and M42. A renewed focus on offline shipments in 2022, along with the momentum it has gained in the online segment, should help Samsung

stay in a strong position in 2022. vivo was at the third position, with a shipment decline of 6% YoY, though it continued to lead with a 28% share of offline channel shipments in 2021. Its Y series continued to be a major contributor, however, it faced supply challenges as well. vivo could leverage its sub-brand iQOO to expand its online presence and garner share in 2022. realme at the fourth slot registered the highest growth of 26% YoY amongst the top 5 vendors. It also rose to the second slot in 4Q21 (Oct-Dec), surpassing Samsung, with a share of 19%. In the online space, it continued to be at the second slot with a high 21% share in 2021. realme’s UNISOCbased shipments reached 60% of its total, ensuring sufficient supplies in 4Q21. OPPO, at the fifth slot, witnessed a healthy growth of 8% YoY in 2021 to 18 million units. It also surpassed Samsung for the second slot annually in the offline channel with a share of 18%. With a larger focus on higher ASP devices like the Reno 6/7 series, OPPO’s play in the mid-premium segment has risen compared to previous years. However, its online presence remains limited.

FACE 2 FACE

RAJEEV: HOW DO YOU SEE THE FY 21-22 WHICH WAS BADLY AFFECTED DURING LOCKDOWN ACROSS ALL MAJOR MARKET? WHAT WERE THE MAJOR CHALLENGES FOR MARKET IN LAST FEW MONTHS? RAHUL GOEL: The pandemic has crippled businesses across the board and as it continues to spread, it is undoubtedly forcing unprecedented changes in the business environment. With multiple lockdowns implemented already, the situation onground remains extremely unpredictable. Having said that, at Canon, we believe that challenging situations like these present an opportunity for businesses to rethink and adapt to the changing landscape. We have taken a closer look into the situation and are devising strategies to always ensure and drive customer delight. Not only have we seen a shift in the buying pattern of consumers, but also how service plays a critical role for consumers to make purchase decisions. The pandemic has changed the consumer outlook in many ways and their focus has completely shifted to health and safety concerns. Our agility to adapt to the increase in demand for contactless service was well received by the consumers as our service teams went an extra mile to support the customers and ensure on-site services wherever required. Additionally, remote support by our engineers was also a delight for the customers as it enabled them to operate without hiccups even in the challenging times. RAJEEV: WHAT ARE THE THREE EMERGING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS IN INDIA? HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CATER THESE TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITY? RAHUL GOEL: If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that change is the only constant. Organizations must adapt Developing to understand the criticality of advanced customer service experience that matches their needs in constantly varying situations. As an organization, we are realizing the importance of after-sales service with regards to the overall health of a business and are adapting themselves to the evolving needs of the consumers. It is apparent that technology will continue to play a pivotal role in enhancing customer experience. - Omni-channel support: Following the omnichannel customer service trend, www.digitalterminal.in

companies can create a seamless customer experience and gain maximum customer satisfaction. Streamlining the customer information and messages across multiple channels is important to provide exceptional service to the customers. Businesses should equip themselves with smart collaboration and communication tools to provide superior customer experiences, - Contactless support: Due to a general desire for convenience as well as the current need to avoid risk and ensure safety, customers’ demand for digital and contactless services has rapidly grown This has prompted businesses to adopt an out-and-out contactless and touchless model customer and executive support. In line with the same and to further elevate the customer experience, we have introduced service verification OTP codes that are sent to the customers to eliminate the need for customer signatures for authenticating successful closure of their service requests, thereby making the entire process seamless. - Automation: The continuous rise of customer support bots or chatbots can authorize companies to provide a gateway for round the clock support with automated replies that immediately assist the customer to figure out the technical fault or query. This cuts down on the waiting period and provides customers with instant yet effective solutions. RAJEEV: HOW ARE YOU CATERING TO SERVICE ISSUES AS CUSTOMER CAN’T VISIT SERVICE CENTER PHYSICALLY DUE TO CURRENT PANDEMIC? HOW DO YOU HANDLE TECH SUPPORT IN NEW NORMAL? RAHUL GOEL: In the wake of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdown in the country, as per Government directives, we had to keep our service depots and call center closed. However, for our customers falling under the category of essential service providers, our service team had gone the extra mile to support the customers. We provided consumables and on-site services to these customers through various means and method, which includes remote support by Canon engineers, toner delivery through customers own transport and in many cases our engineers made site visits, taking all the prescribed precautions and permissions. The second aspect was the requirement of consumables, If the toner were exhausted, the customers that fell into the essential services

category would send their vehicles to pick up the supplies. We have a service by the name of e-Maintenance. It is an integral part of our remote service portfolio and service delivery model, enabling it to offer the benefits of remote services to its customer base. We are seeing a surge in demand for such type of services in the current day and age because customers do not want any loss in productivity. To deliver services that complement the fast-paced lifestyle of our customers and strengthen our commitment towards ‘customer delight’ in this difficult time, we developed the ME appsCanon Care and Mobile CMP along with opening our services on WhatsApp. The mobile apps provide more flexibility and seamless value-added services for both B2C & B2B customers. RAJEEV: HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE/SUPPORT YOUR PARTNERS/CHANNEL DURING THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES? RAHUL GOEL: We have invested significantly in developing a sound partner ecosystem that is spread across geographies. We have organized training sessions for partners to help them better understand the changing trends and how to adjust and cope with the new normal. We are also mindful of our channel partners’ profitability and long-term sustenance. We frequently did zoom interactions with them to understand challenges as faced by them and provided support to them in every possible way. THE DATA CENTER ON THE CUSP OF CHANGE Micron’s technology innovations of today are unlocking the opportunity for tomorrow. By Bryan Madden, Senior Director, Technology & Business Marketing, Micron

In recent years, the exponential rise in the volume and types of data and new services has driven a significant investment in data centers and related cloud infrastructure. Additionally, an evolution in Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads is now central to unlocking value and insights from this valuable data. Consequently, organizations are increasingly focused on building the infrastructure they need to meet these demands—whether on-prem, at the intelligent edge or in the cloud—to gain greater efficiency and scale. These conditions create a unique opportunity for cloud service providers. A transformational challenge For many providers, scaling resources to adapt to the evolving nature of workloads has created a tricky challenge: how do they support the known demands of today while planning for the increases in scale, efficiency and performance requirements of tomorrow?

unfortunately not be well suited for these new workloads. The imperative for new infrastructure investment today is flexibility. Architecting a data center for efficiency is also key. The ability to effectively serve applications and leverage data from widely disparate sources with different performance, scale and latency needs is more important than ever before. Architecting transformations without performance bottlenecks Historic infrastructure innovation has relied on a maniacal focus on more compute, more cores and, consequently, more cost. Today’s opportunity feels much different as constraints in system architecture have limited the effectiveness of simply throwing more compute resources at the challenge. This time, the industry response will need to focus on a balanced approach where data and services are provided quickly and efficiently, with minimal performance bottlenecks between compute, memory/storage and I/O resources, maximizing valuable resources and pooling these resources where possible. Tackling evolving workloads

Addressing this challenge has been made more difficult by the nature of “typical” enterprise-class data centers. Many of these have been built over a long period of time and represent a spectrum of technical architectures, from monolithic legacy systems to more open and modern virtualized environments and increasingly cloud-native containerized infrastructure. The need for flexible infrastructure Efficient scaling poses one solution to these increasing demands. As workloads evolve to include more complex tasks that leverage AI capabilities such as image recognition at the intelligent edge, machine learning in high performance clusters, natural language processing in the cloud, or video encoding/ decoding on content delivery networks, the traditional balance of compute to memory or storage access and connectivity (I/O) must shift. This means that some portions of existing data center infrastructure may 12

I FEBRUARY 2022

The “compute first” hierarchy of workload characterization in traditional data centers is evolving. A growing volume and variety of these resources (such as CPU, GPU, IPU, DPU and accelerators) are emerging in the market. Clearly, the heterogeneity of compute and evolving workloads means that innovative memory, storage, and interconnect technologies will be as important, if not more so, than traditional compute when it comes to rolling out an efficient data center infrastructure in the future. A new memory and storage hierarchy in the data center is key to future innovations, such as Compute Express Link (CXL), and are central to maximizing the value and resource utilization in future data centers. CXL is a high performance, low latency, memory-centric protocol that can be used to communicate between devices in a system. It’s an industry-wide effort to unlock the opportunity of composability. Take pooling of resources as an example. Pooling enables memory resources to different hosts depending on the workload. Memory can be allocated and deallocated to different hosts. This minimizes overpro-

visioning in the data centers while improving memory performance. Composable data center architecture is the key This is where Micron steps in. We are creating innovative memory and storage technologies that address these challenges and are delivering them through broad ecosystem partnerships and standards leadership, bringing over 40 years of innovation in memory and storage to support the industry in a new era in the data center. In fact, Micron’s technology innovations of today are unlocking the opportunity for tomorrow. For the first time in our history, Micron has delivered industry-leading process node leadership across memory and storage. The introduction of 176L NAND and 1 alpha DRAM represent major technology breakthroughs for our company and reflect our focused R&D investment. Earlier this year, Micron introduced its industry leading 1 alpha memory node, the world’s most advanced memory node. This advancement has been realized across our standard compute DRAM and low power DRAM product lines, delivering significantly higher memory density versus our previous generation. We have also developed the world’s first 176-layer NAND which leads to better power efficiency and write times, and higher data transfer rates. Micron is also leading the industry in the CXL-attached memory era by pioneering innovations to enable low-power DRAM in the data center, but success requires strong industry collaboration. CXL-attached memory needs to be co-optimized with leading compute platforms, so we are working with our ecosystem partners and through industry consortiums to do this and more. The industry is collaborating to address challenges and deliver the data center of the future: a composable data center architecture that will give organizations the ability and flexibility to dynamically allocate resources to workloads as needed. ENTERPRISE FOCUS

BY 2025, 51% OF ENTERPRISE IT SPENDING IN KEY MARKET SEGMENTS WILL SHIFT TO CLOUD: GARTNER Enterprise IT spending on public cloud computing, within addressable market segments, will overtake spending on traditional IT in 2025, according to Gartner, Inc. Gartner’s ‘cloud shift’ research includes only those enterprise IT categories that can transition to cloud, within the application software, infrastructure software, business process services and system infrastructure markets. By 2025, 51% of IT spending in these four categories will have shifted from traditional solutions to the public cloud, compared to 41% in 2022. Almost two-thirds (65.9%) of spending on application software will be directed toward cloud technologies in 2025, up from 57.7% in 2022. “The shift to the cloud has only accelerated over the past two years due to COVID-19, as organizations responded to a new business and social dynamic,” said Michael Warrilow, research vice president at Gartner. “Technology and service providers that fail to adapt to the pace of cloud shift face increasing risk of becoming obsolete or, at best, being relegated to low-growth markets.” In 2022, traditional offerings will constitute 58.7% of the addressable revenue (see Fig-

ure 1), but growth in traditional markets will be much lower than cloud. Demand for integration capabilities, agile work processes and composable architecture will drive continued shift to the cloud, as long-term digital transformation and modernization initiatives are brought forward to 2022. Technology product managers should use the cloud shift as measure of market opportunity. In 2022, more than $1.3 trillion in enterprise IT spending is at stake from the shift to cloud, growing to almost $1.8 trillion in 2025, according to Gartner. Ongoing disruption to IT markets by cloud will be amplified by the introduction of new technologies, including distributed cloud. Many will further blur the lines between traditional and cloud offerings. Enterprise adoption of distributed cloud has the potential to further accelerate cloud shift because it brings public cloud services into domains that have primarily been non-cloud, expanding the addressable market. Organizations are evaluating it because of its ability

to meet location-specific requirements, such as data sovereignty, low-latency and network bandwidth. To capitalize on the shift to cloud, Gartner recommends technology and services providers target segments where the shift is occurring most aggressively, in addition to seeking new high-growth cloud opportunities. For example, infrastructure-related segments have a lower level of cloud penetration and are expected to grow faster than segments such as enterprise applications that are already highly penetrated. Providers should also target specific personas, adoption profiles and use cases with go-to-market initiatives.
