Letter from the Producer
The risks that come with playing big far outweigh the price of playing small to fit in. To me, playing small represents a life of following the status-quo, accepting mediocrity and being resistant to change--all of which run counter to a life well-lived. Change is the one thing that is constant, yet we often spend an inordinate amount of energy trying to fight what is the very nature and essence of life. The fact that something is always changing and finite is what actually makes it so intriguing and desirable. We see beauty in a flower precisely because it will die. We love our pets so deeply like family because we know their life span will be much shorter than ours, and we are driven to seek and connect with other people because we know it will not be forever. If these experiences were forever, we would be devoid of the innate drive to seek them in the first place. With respect to our work, I think there is space for both being in allowance and for the act of creation, which requires willful effort. Said another way, giving and receiving coexist together. They are not opposites, they are counterparts. They are symbiotic. The nature of our work, as is everything, is not an either/or proposition, but rather a both/ and principle. There is not only space for the interplay of both giving and receiving (the act of creation and being in allowance), but both are actually required for success. An intimate relationship requires both. A business requires both. A project requires both. We don’t create in a vacuum; we create inside the village. And I’ll take it a step further and say that I’ve discovered trying to eradicate our problems is energy misspent. The objective should be to see--to truly see--our problems for what they really are, address them and ultimately, be successful in spite of them. Actually, our problems are our greatest opportunities. Let me share with you if you didn’t already know it: We’ve had a lot of “problems” with Tall City Blues Fest, which is the common colloquial way of saying we’ve had opportunities abound. The Fest has taught me as much, if not more, as I’ve contributed to it. The last three years launching the Fest have been some of the hardest of my professional life and also the most rewarding. You see, the nature of problems is that they have treasure baked into them, like a baby in a king cake. Knowing that removes the sting of anxiety from the equation. Yes, we still feel scared and anxious when facing problems because they often cohabit with the unknown, but they no longer have to be debilitating. The pain of the problem becomes tolerable because we know that our discomfort can be a precipice to growth. Where once we were blind, now we can see that we’ve simply been chosen as a vessel for something to get shaped on the anvil of our lives. Frankly, I can’t think of a greater honor than to be chosen for these assignments. And with that, it is my greatest pleasure to present you with the 4th annual Tall City Blues Fest, presented by Mazda of Midland/Odessa. Enjoy. Indulge. And behold the happiness of the Blues. It’s there if you choose to see it, I promise. As my dear friend, Chris Robin, says “I never thought the Blues could make me so happy.”

BEGINNER BLUES HARMONICA (Ages 14+) Made Possible by Susan, Bill & Pancho Blair Armstrong Instructor: Adam Gussow (Oxford, MS) Start Time: 10 AM (60 minutes) Location: Room 1109 If you’ve always wanted to learn how to play blues harmonica, commonly referred to as a “harp” for its reference to being a mouth harp, this workshop will open the door and walk you through. You’ll learn how to hold the harp, how to make single notes and chords, how to play a basic train rhythm and how to bend and warble. Handouts will be provided. Beginner harmonicas in the key of C are provided courtesy of Hohner Harmonicas. Participants are also welcome to bring their own harmonicas, as long as they are in the key of C. What to Bring: An interest in playing harmonica. 8
MAKE & PLAY: DIDDLEY BOW BUILDING (Ages 8+) Made Possible by Midland Root Beer Instructor: Ted Drozdowski (Nashville, TN) Start Time: 10 AM (60 minutes) Location: Room 1117 Participants will assemble a primitive one-string diddley bow made from a can, a piece of wood, nails and a wire. Muddy Waters, Jessie Mae Hemphill and countless other blues greats learned to play on an instrument like this. After constructing the instrument, which participants will keep, they will get a lesson in playing onestring Mississippi twang with slides provided by Rocky Mountain Slides. Strings are furnished courtesy of GHS Strings. What to Bring: An interest in roots instruments. SLIDE GUITAR BASICS (Ages 14+) Made Possible by Peyton’s Bikes Instructor: Ted Drozdowski (Nashville, TN) Start Time: 11:15 AM (60 minutes) Location: Room 1117 Ever wonder how Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Son House and other greats make their guitars whinny like horses on the Brazos or cry like a lost calf in the back 40? Learn how to play slide guitar in a few easy steps. This workshop will cover slide selection and materials, the two traditional styles of open tuning and essential tips for using a slide along with basic finger picking. Designed for beginning slide players and fans who want to know more about the magical sound of slide. A handout on basic open tunings will be provided. What to Bring: An electric or acoustic guitar and a slide FINDING JOY IN THE BLUES (Ages 6-12) Made Possible by D.L. Taylor’s Consulting Instructor: Castro Coleman, a.k.a. Mr. Sipp (McComb, MS) Start Time: 11:30 AM (60 minutes) Location: Room 1109 Participants in this workshop will learn the fun, happy side of the blues, how it has come full circle, including how it started and where it is today. Taught by the 2014 International Blues Challenge Winner, Castro Coleman, he will also show participants how the music of today has evolved from the blues. This workshop will include both a presentation, as well as an interactive follow-along jam. What to Bring: A curiosity about the blues.

UNLEASHING THE POWER OF STAGE PRESENCE (Ages 10+) Made Possible by Printer Solutions Instructor: Annika Chambers (Houston, TX) Start Time: 12:45 PM (60 minutes) Location: Room 1109 This workshop is not theory chock-full with silly tips and tricks, but rather an interactive workshop where you will learn simple changes that can bolster your confidence while performing and help you better understand how to engage your audiences. Designed for those that are already performing and would like to hone their stage presence skills or for those contemplating performing and need some basic pointers. What to Bring: Enthusiasm and an open mind.
WRITE YOUR BEST SONG SONGWRITING WORKSHOP (Ages 10+) Made Possible by Roger & Lynne Clark Instructor: Tas Cru (Chaumont, NY) Start Time: 1 PM (60 minutes) Location: Room 1117 Participants will learn about developing meaningful song topics, utilizing traditional and non-traditional blues song structures and making words work with rhythm and rhyme. Performance and song content are only part of what makes a good song, so 2014 Keeping the Blues Alive recipient, Tas Cru, will help songwriters craft lyrics that make their songs engaging and memorable in this interactive workshop. Participants will leave with a solid working draft of their own blues song.

What to Bring: Song ideas and drafts of working lyrics. Participants that also play guitar or use a guitar as a songwriting tool are welcome to bring their guitar, but not required.

MAKE & PLAY: CIGAR-BOX GUITAR BUILDING (Ages 8+) Made Possible by Wolf Energy Instructor: Matt Isbell (Memphis, TN) Start Time: 2:30 PM (60 minutes) Location: Room 1109 Participants will assemble an acoustic cigar-box guitar from pre-prepped components the first half of the workshop and be led in a group jam the last half with furnished bottleneck slides. Attendees will keep both the guitar and the bottleneck slides, hand-built by Memphis-based slide and cigarbox guitar maker, Matt Isbell. No heavy or electric equipment will be used during the construction phase of the workshop. What to Bring: An interest in handmade, simple instruments.
BLUES BY EAR: ADVANCED BLUES ROCK GUITAR (Ages 14+) Made Possible by Touchwood Resources Instructor: Gregg Wright (Los Angeles, CA) Start Time: 2:15 PM (75 minutes) Location: Room 1117 Develop your ear for blues guitar in this intermediate to advanced workshop with former guitar player for Michael Jackson, Gregg Wright. Gregg plays upside-down and left-handed like Hendrix, so this is not a textbook classroom style workshop that will teach technique, but rather a workshop sharing guitar wisdom that can help you plug holes in your playing and take your game to the next level. A jam session is likely to break out! Prerequisite: A basic to intermediate ability to play electric guitar. What to Bring: An electric guitar and small amp. 11
Featured Artist
Andrew Lawson is this year’s Featured Artist. He is a Midland native who works primarily in 2-D mediums. With many of his influences coming from 1950’s cartoonists, surrealist and pop painters, Andrew sees himself as a contemporary artist and part of the modern PopSurrealism movement. He says his art is a direct expression of himself at a given moment when he is creating a piece, but prefers to let patrons of his work interpret their own thoughts and meaning about it. “It’s more powerful that way when they get to develop their own relationship with an artists work,” he says. Andrew’s work tends to be whimsical in nature counter-balanced with dark undertones. He prefers to free hand his ideas with paint instead of drawing them and uses vibrant, contrasting colors with attention to detail. His first love is working with acrylics, but he also enjoys working with charcoal, graphite and various inks. Still young in his art career, Andrew has been painting seriously for three years. Before committing to a career in art, Andrew enjoyed success as a musician in Lubbock. He recently graduated with honors from the UTPB with degrees in Art and History. Besides producing art and music, Andrew also enjoys cars, cooking, shooting and any activity where he can exercise his creative energy. 12
“A festival implies that it’s more than just a concert,” said Lisa Grissom, creator and producer of the Fest. “So in addition to the showcase of award-winning talent on our stages, we also want to incorporate visual art into the Fest. We do this in two ways: One is with our Featured Artist program and the other is through our Silent Art Auction.”
About the Featured Artist Program
Since its beginning in 2011, Tall City Blues Fest has commissioned an artist for $1,000 to design the Festival Guide Cover Art and Commemorative Poster each year. “We want to stimulate and encourage the creation of visual art and also provide our patrons with a piece of commemorative memorabilia that they can collect from every year of the Fest,” said Grissom. The poster on the opposite page is this year’s Commemorative Poster designed by Andrew Lawson. Andrew also designed the cover art on this Festival Guide. To purchase your own personal print of the 2014 Commemorative Poster or a set of all four years posters, go to the Festival Information Tent centrally located on the Fest grounds.
About the Silent Art Auction
“This year, in particular, we’ve started making the transition to focus on contemporary art,” Grissom offered. “When we started looking around at what is available in galleries, we realized there is very little opportunity in West Texas for contemporary artists to showcase their work.” The Fest invited artists from all around the country to participate and this year’s selections were juried by a panel rendering a total of 22 pieces available for bid across multiple mediums. Participating artists receive 70% of the proceeds from the highest bid on their art, and this year in addition to placing a bid, you can also vote for your favorite piece. The People’s Choice artist will receive 100% of the highest bid on their work! The Silent Auction opens for bidding at 2 PM on Friday in the bistro area of the Doubletree and will close at 11 PM on Saturday evening after headliner, Ana Popovic performs. 13

Ana Popovic
Ana Popvic (pronounced pop-o-vich) is an internationally known, Billboard chart topping force in contemporary blues, in part because she is from Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia), but mostly because her smoking blend of electric blues funk and slide guitar, jazzy instrumentals and tight grooves with soulful, feminine vocals give her an out of this world stage presence. Ana was born in Belgrade and grew up in a family where music was very important. Her father, a guitar-player in his own right, often held jam sessions among friends at their home. Listening to her father’s impressive collection of blues and soul records and witnessing these jam sessions throughout her youth, Ana finally picked up her father’s guitar at age 15. As a college student, Ana studied Graphic Design and only after having a tape selected that she submitted on a whim to Utrecht’s Conservatory in the Netherlands, did Ana make the switch from graphic designer to professional musician. Performing against the backdrop of the fall of Communism in the mid 90s, Ana began playing throughout Europe with her first band ‘Hush’ ultimately climbing to 100 shows a year by 1998. Today, Ana is endorsed by Fender, Mesa Boogie, Ovation and DR strings. She has shared headlining stages with B.B. King, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Robert Randolph, Jonny Lang and many others. She was also part of the Experience Hendrix tour that came through Midland earlier this year. She is a five-time Blues Music Awards nominee along with countless other accolades since beginning her professional career in 2002, including multiple European awards and magazine covers. Too Slim & The Taildraggers
Tim ‘Too Slim’ Langford, with his band the Taildraggers, have created an eclectic style of blues and rock that has become a genre all its own. Experiencing a Too Slim and the Taildraggers‘ concert is like taking a journey through the history of American music. Too Slim’s style includes down-home blues, funky blues rock, Americana, southern swamp rock, and instrumental guitar styles. Too Slim is backed by the top-shelf rhythm section of Eric “Stretch” Hanson on bass and Jeff “Shakey” Fowlkes on drums and vocals.
Too Slim has had four of his 11 studio albums peak in the Top 10 Billboard Blues Album Charts and accumulated over 40 different awards and nominations over the course of his career, including lifetime achievement awards, hall of fame inductions and their music being featured on MTV’s Real World and Road Rules. What was your genesis as a musician? I began playing guitar at age 14 after seeing a ZZ Top Concert. I knew right then that’s what I wanted to do and have never looked back. What about being a musician frustrates you? Nothing about being a musician frustrates me. That being said, it’s all the other hats you have to wear when you are a bandleader that can get frustrating. The price of gas really frustrates me! What about being a musician drives you to keep on keeping on? I just have a passion for music that keeps me going. This is a labor of love for me. I can’t imagine doing anything else. What do you consider your own personal mission to be with your music? My personal mission is to be the best I can be every night and hopefully the people listening will like what they are hearing and have a good time. The only person I want to be better than is the one I was today. Most people see you on stage when you’re performing and putting on a show. Who are you when you’re not performing on stage? I am very quiet and a little shy. I like to spend time with my beautiful wife Nancy and our four dogs. I enjoy going to see other performers and also like to go to art exhibits. Yoga is also a big part of our lives. We live a very Zen lifestyle. Nancy and I have three children and we have a very large extended family. What is one thing about you that most people would find surprising? That I’m not from Texas. Most people who hear my music think I am, or that I used to be a sinner and I liked it! Mr. Sipp, Mississippi Blues Child Castro Coleman, a.k.a. Mr. Sipp ‘Mississippi Blues Child’ was born August 25, 1976 (he shares a birthday with Fest Producer Lisa Grissom) to Johnell and the late Vera Coleman in the small town of McComb, MS. With gospel as his foundation, Sipp started playing guitar at the tender age of six with his musically inclined family. He has played on over 50 national gospel recordings and this year he took home the title of International Blues Challenge Winner, just a mere 14 months after taking up the blues. The IBC is held annually in Memphis and hosts over 230 bands competing for this honor.
Coleman has traveled the globe playing his unique style of guitar and works as a songwriter, composer, producer, vocalist and performing artist. Most importantly, he is a God fearing, hard working family man with four daughters. Recently, Castro was casted in the upcoming James Brown movie, “Get on Up” that will be released August 1. It has been said that Mr. Sipp will be the next “King of the Blues”. 2014 has been a big year thus far for Coleman. In addition to his 2014 IBC win, Castro also won the “Gibson Best Guitar Award” this year, as well as landed an endorsement from Ephiphone. Additionally, he received the “National Artist of the Year” nomination by the Jackson Music Awards and was the first recipient of the “Bobby Rush Award” bestowed by the Jus Blues Music Awards. What was your genesis as a musician? I was born a musician. Music was in my life from the moment I arrived; both of my parents were in singing groups and played some type of instrument. It’s just a natural part of me. Most people see you on stage when you’re performing and putting on a show. Who are you when you’re not performing on stage? When I’m home, I enjoy working in my yard, fixing cars and finding new toys to re-build. I spend the bulk of my time at home in my studio working or spending time with my four daughters. If you could have one wish for a project that would change the world for the better what would it be? It has been proven that kids that are involved in music learn better and are more attentive. It would be my wish that all music programs in schools are continued so that the gift of the blues, as well as all other music stays alive. Kids love to learn about something that’s interesting to them and music is one of those things. Ghost Town Blues Band
Ghost Town Blues Band is Beale Street’s latest success story and the 2014 International Blues Challenge 2nd Place Winner. Their debut release “Dust the Dust” (Inside Sounds) received an impressive amount of airplay throughout the US and Europe and the recording won the European Independent Music Label Award for “Top Sound” in blues. Both Preston McEwen behind the drums and Alex Piazza on the bass guitar are a punishing rhythm section behind Matt Isbell with raunchy guitar licks and chainsaw rhythms. With the addition of horn players Silky Smooth Suavo Jones, Marque Boyd and Jeremy Powell on keys, the grooves go from funky to funk-nasty as the band gains more notoriety in the international blues scene. Having been chosen as one of B.B. King’s “Bluesville’s Pick to Click” for their newest CD, “Dark Horse”, Ghost Town Blues Band is a modern blues band with an intimate knowledge of both blues, rock and improvisational jams. The band’s raw energy and intensity is reminiscent of some of the best blues that rock n’ roll has ever offered. They can turn on a dime from North Mississippi hill country grooves to classic electric urban blues and funk. Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat Jim Suhler (born December 30, 1960 in Dallas) is an American Texas Blues guitarist. Suhler has been playing professionally since the 1980s and has performed with a variety of Blues legends that include George Thorogood, Johnny Winter, AC/DC, Buddy Whittington, Billy F. Gibbons, Joe Bonamassa, Elvin Bishop, and Buddy Guy along with many other notable musicians.
He currently resides in Dallas and plays locally in and around Texas’ major cities, especially Dallas/Fort Worth with his own band, Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat, in addition to the remainder of the United States and Canada. He and his band have also gained a large following in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, England and Ireland. The current Monkey Beat lineup includes: Shawn Phares on keyboards/accordion, Christopher Alexander on bass, and Beau Chadwell on drums/percussion. Since 1999, Suhler has been the lead/rhythm guitarist for George Thorogood & The Destroyers on all the band’s releases & tours. He has also been nominated multiple times by the Dallas Observer for “Best Blues” and for a Blues Music Award in 2010 for “Best Rock/Blues CD” for his album “Tijuana Blues Bible”. He started his professional career on the U.S. Southern circuit in the mid-1970’s honing is craft with years of playing endless one-nighters and opening spots for national headliners. “I opened quite a few times for Albert King and Freddie King, and learned a great deal from them,” said Wright. “Their words of encouragement really energized me and I owe them a huge debt of gratitude.” Relocating from Louisiana to Los Angeles in the 1980s, Wright spent the next two decades as a session man and a “hired gun” touring and doing albums with Mick Fleetwood, Michael Jackson, the Gap Band, Berlin, Spencer Davis and many other top musicians. While today, Gregg performs all over Europe, the UK and across North America under his own name, he previously garnered many awards for his work with major label artists including a platinum record award for The Jackson’s “Victory” CD and another platinum record award for Berlin’s “Count Three and Pray”, which featured the hit single from the Top Gun soundtrack, “Take My Breath Away”. Gregg was also awarded the “International Diplomacy in Music Award” in 2010 by the US Ambassador to Macedonia. What was your genesis as a musician? Seeing Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles What about being a musician frustrates you? People thinking our job is easy and that we’re a bunch of irresponsible druggies. What do you consider your own personal mission to be with your music? To reach and uplift as many people as I can, and break down as many ethnic, religious and cultural barriers as possible. Music is also a journey of self discovery and awareness, which I hope to continue and the blues, in particular, is a human story. Ted Drozdowski’s Scissormen Ted Drozdowski brings a vital, original vision to American roots music. Through a decade and five albums including his latest, the CD+DVD set “BIG SHOES: Walking and Talking the Blues”, a collaboration with world-renowned roots music film maker Robert Mugge, Ted has led his band the Scissormen through the US and Europe, playing everything from Mississippi juke joints to major festivals including Bonnaroo and France’s Cognac Blues Passions.
Ted Drozdowski’s Scissormen base their music on the genre’s oldest sounds, echoing up from the Mississippi Delta, and transporting them into the present with their creative, freewheeling and rocking approach. Ted also worked as a consultant for PBS’s “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Blues” from 20012003 and is an award-wining journalist with his writings have appeared in Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Premiere Guitar, Guitar Aficionado, Gibson.com, the Grammy Awards and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame program books, The Billboard Illustrated Encyclopedia of Jazz & Blues and many other publications ultimately garnering him a Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) award for Journalism presented by The Blues Foundation. What was your genesis as a musician? It goes back to watching The Johnny Cash Show and The Midnight Special on TV when I was a kid. My foundation unveiled itself there before my eyes when I was a child. What do you consider your own personal mission to be with your music? I believe the entire universe can be revealed within the blues. I want people to understand that this music is a living, breathing art form that carries all kinds of deep messages about what it is to be human. It is my mission to keep the blues evolving, contemporary and relevant. Most people see you on stage when you’re performing and putting on a show. Who are you when you’re not performing on stage? I enjoy my comfortable home in Nashville, with trees full of birds in a quiet neighborhood. I’m also fortunate to have my loving wife, Laurie Hoffma (who also manages the band’s business and works with me in our company Locomotive Artist Services), and Dolly, the best dog I’ve ever known. We love our friends, hiking, travel, trains, great food and a good Boulevardier every once in a while. What is one thing about you that most people would find surprising? I’m Polish on both sides of my family and play blues. Also, that I have a model railroad and I’m a total Godzilla fan. Annika Chambers hails from Houston, Texas. As a child, she always wanted to sing, but her dreams of enlisting in the Army and attaining a degree in radio and TV broadcasting took priority. Since completing her 7 1/2 year term with the US Army, Annika has blazed the Houston music scene with her debut release, “Making My Mark”. Performing is my soul work. What do you consider your own personal mission to be with your music? I believe I’m meant to inspire people and that I’ve been given a talent to bring people together through music. I put my heart and soul into every performance that way people truly feel me. Most people see you on stage when you’re performing and putting on a show. Who are you when you’re not performing on stage? I’m pretty much a social butterfly wherever I am. I do spend a lot of time in the gym. I box, do zumba, run and I have a personal trainer. I also like to spend time writing inspirational quotes and poetry. My family plays a very important role in my life. We are extremely close. What is one thing about you that most people would find surprising? I am super afraid of clowns. If you could have one wish for a project that would change the world for the better what would it be? I would have an adult literacy camp. There are so many people out there that deserve another chance at learning the basics all over again and reading truly is fundamental. Rock Island Rollers
Since their founding in January of 2012, The Rock Island Rollers have quickly become known as one of the best in the Midwest. They serve up a soulful blend of blues and funk, pulling no punches. These two-time International Blues Challengers boast a stellar line up that starts with founding member Jeff Banks on lead vocals and guitar, Heath Alan on lead vocals and sax, Justin Appel on keyboards and vocals, Erik Brown on trumpet and vocals, Kip Heaberlin on bass, and finally George McCutchen on drums. Their music is true and original. That is what drives this blue train. In 2005 Jeff Banks was nominated for “Best Guitarist” by the Austin Music Awards and in 2007, Heath Alan was inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What was your genesis as a musician? JB: I started playing drums when I was seven. I was interested in blues because of the “sound” and listened to funk and jazz for the drums. I was always musical but never considered music as a profession until I got an electric guitar at the age of 15. The first thing I did was write a song… I knew instantly that this would be my medium! What about being a musician drives you to keep on keeping on? JB: For me music is an obsession. Sometimes I’ll tell myself I’m done with it then in the next breath I’m writing a song about how I’m done with it. What do you consider your own personal mission to be with your music? JB: First and foremost to be honest! It’s also important to me to make a personal connection. When I write a song I am digging deep into my heart, trying to discover something about myself and hopefully, in the process, discover something about all people. Sharing is then the next logical step. Most people see you on stage when you’re performing and putting on a show. Who are you when you’re not performing on stage? JB: I’m a father of four. My family is at the center of my life. I spend the days with my kids then after everyone has gone to bed I write, record, produce, etc… What is one thing about you that most people would find surprising? Award-winning guitarist, singer and producer Tim Kreitz has honed his craft over more than two decades working in the Texas music scene. A monster guitarist in several styles of music, you may find him on tour with either his power trio the Tim Kreitz Band or outlaw red dirt bad boys Creed Fisher and the Redneck Nation Band, whose second album will release this year. So far in 2014, Tim has toured most of the midwestern and southern United States and is in the middle of completing another fulllength album for TKB.
As a producer, engineer and studio player, Tim has worked with many well-known artists, and has been recognized as a performer by the West Texas Music Hall of Fame, having received its coveted “Entertainer of the Year” award. He also received a BigStar Music awards nomination this year as a menber of the Redneck Nation Band after charting three singles in 18 months on the Texas music charts. Originally from San Angelo, Tim now calls Midland home and was flattered to receive the invitation to play Tall City Blues Fest 2014. “After years of constant road shows, I appreciate playing close to home more than ever,” Tim remarked. “I’m honored to have been selected as one of the West Texas Invitational performers.” Tim Kreitz Band features Britt Parker on drums and Matt Vann on bass. “Expect an eclectic mix of blues-based American styles in our set,” Tim said. “We’ll take some heavy blues, mix it with some southern rock, and show everyone a great time.” Cimarex Energy Main Stage: Saturday, July 26 5:00 PM

Tas Cru & His Band of Tortured Souls It’s not for nothing that Tas Cru has been dubbed, “the Master of the triple entendre.” His songs are blues poetry, crafted with rare verbal flair. Live, they are delivered with a power and passion that only the seasoned entertainer can render. As Living Blues magazine observes, ”The vivacity and sheer joy with which Cru plays is intoxicating and his ability to cast a memorable hook is magical!”
In early bands, Cru was introduced to the great Sun Records heroes and the country blues that later served as a counterpoint to the rock blues he idolized so much. These combined influences are heard throughout his music in his 50+ original songs over four albums, including “Biscuit” (2006), “gravi-Tas “(2008), “Grizzle n’ Bone” (2009), “Jus’ Desserts” (2010) and “Tired of Bluesmen Cryin” (2013). His new album, “Keep the Money” is slated for release this fall. In January of this year, Cru was honored with a Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) award for his work with kids in education and last year he was awarded “Master Blues Artist” by the New York State Blues Hall of Fame. In 2009, Blues Festival Guide magazine named him “Blues Artist on the Rise”. What was your genesis as a musician? Playing guitar for my sisters’ friends. This taught me that girls like guys who play guitar. My uncle played me lots of 50’s era blues–Hubert Sumlin and Muddy Waters in particular. What about being a musician frustrates you? Songs written by contemporary blues writers who do not seem to care about lyrics. Onedimensional songs with no message or story annoy me. What about being a musician drives you to keep on keeping on? When an audience is visibly moved by something in one of my songs or by how it was performed. What do you consider your own personal mission to be with your music? That’s simple–move people emotionally and spiritually with my music. Most people see you on stage when you’re performing and putting on a show. Who are you when you’re not performing on stage? I have two passions outside of music–baseball and literature. I watch or listen to baseball almost everyday and am an avid reader. I am a father of one smart, kind-hearted and lovely grown daughter. What is one thing about you that most people would find surprising? I have a passion for 19th century British literature and turn of the century Irish drama. Artist Autograph Page Ruben’s love of music was instilled at a young age. His father played guitar and sang, as did his uncles, cousins and older brothers. His family owned a nightclub in Corpus Christi and it was a revolving door of touring musicians with wild stories of the road to tell. But it wasn’t until his dad got a call to back-up a touring band one night for a gig, that everything clicked and Ruben made a decision to pursue music as a career.

From that point, Ruben set about teaching himself to play guitar. “I would slow down our old 45s on the record player and learn that way,” he said. Eventually he hit the road at age 15, starting out playing heavy metal music. After the death of a band member though, Ruben saw SRV perform, which drove him back to making music, but this time it was the blues. Today, Ruben V is hailed as San Antonio’s best guitar player and he has released more than 20 studio albums over his career. His latest sounds include a more of a Latin flair. What was your genesis as a musician? I wanted to be a musician because I love everything about the idea of it. Getting to tell your story, and finally as a shy kid being able to communicate with my guitar and then later with my voice. What about being a musician frustrates you? The fact that so many people still don’t think its a full time job. Yes its fun, buts my job. its not just for kids. What about being a musician drives you to keep on keeping on? Every morning I wake up and think how blessed am I to get to play music every day of my life and have someone who “gets it”. What do you consider your own personal mission to be with your music? My mission is to take life and add the soundtrack or the song to your memory of what, where and when something happened to you. Most people see you on stage when you’re performing and putting on a show. Who are you when you’re not performing on stage? I like to ride my motorcycle and spend time hanging out with my family doing everyday kinds of things. I am a father and husband and without them I’m sure i would have gone completely nuts by now! Artist Autograph Page The Blues Doctors Adam Gussow and Alan Gross, a.k.a. the Blues Doctors, are Mississippi-based blues veterans who play a mix of down-home Delta standards and urban grooves from the Texas-to-Chicago axis with some New Orleans funk thrown in. They’re a two-man band with a full-on sound with Gussow on amplified harmonica and drumset, Gross on electric guitar and both men sharing vocals. Their 2013 debut album as a duo, “Roosters Happy Hour”, spent many weeks in the #1 position on Amazon’s “Hot New Releases in Acoustic Blues” chart and hit #10 on the Living Blues national radio airplay chart. Gussow is an author and professor at the University of Mississippi and has written three awardwinning books about blues literature and culture, including Mister Satan’s Apprentice (1998), a memoir about Sterling ‘Mr. Satan’ Magee’s time as a Harlem street musician. Gross, a professor of clinical psychology at Ole Miss for thirty years, has worked with a number of Mississippi bluesmen, including Terry ‘Harmonica’ Bean, R.L. Boyce, Kenny Kimbrough, and Lightning Malcolm. What was your genesis as a musician? Gussow: When I was 16 years old, in 1974, I decided that I loved the sound of blues harmonica so much that I went out and bought one at a local mall. The harmonica is the biggest “little” instrument in the world. What about being a musician frustrates you? Gussow: Blues fans who insist that all the best stuff was made long, long ago and who would prefer that contemporary blues musicians not do “un-traditional” things. The problem with this attitude is that it betrays ignorance of what the greats, like Little Walter and B. B. King, were really about. They were about innovation and about striving every day to do something that hadn’t ever been done before. What about being a musician drives you to keep on keeping on? Gussow: Trying to find the perfect balance of down-home and modern blues. Trying to find something new to say while holding true to some core values of the music. Also, as a harmonica player who is my own drummer--a one-man band, but with a guitar player as a sideman--I’m trying to honor my own mentor, Sterling ‘Mr. Satan’ Magee, who was an amazing one-man band. Most people see you on stage when you’re performing and putting on a show. Who are you when you’re not performing on stage? I’m a competitive distance runner. I run 30-45 miles a week in the north Mississippi countryside. I’m the father of an 8-year old boy, and so keeping up with him is a lot of what I do. If you could have one wish for a project that would change the world for the better what would it be? Racial reconciliation on a large scale. I’m not sure how best to achieve it, but if I won the lottery, I would give a significant hunk of it to organizations that work in that direction. This summer is the 50th anniversary of “Freedom Summer” in Mississippi. I just taught a course at Ole Miss about that and had an amazing bunch of students. The Civil Rights movement veterans haven’t been adequately honored; I’d like to see more of that. Artist Autograph Page Johnny Long Often labeled “the real deal”, “a real blues man”, even “a national treasure”, Johnny Long (born March 28, 1950 in St. Louis) cut his teeth on traditional blues, drawing from old masters like Tampa Red, Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Homesick & Elmore James, Lonnie Johnson and others. With a guitar, harmonica and vocals, he embraced their sounds to create his own one-man band. Hailed by the late Muddy Waters as “the best young country blues artist playing today”, Delta Groove released Long’s debut CD, “Lost & Found” in 2006, which was nominated for Best Acoustic Album. Long has a sound that is like a reborn blues man from another place and time. His finger picking and slide along with his harmonica playing make his one-man show quite the engagement. What was your genesis as a musician? I was first influenced by my mother, who was a classical violinist. What do you consider your own personal mission to be with your music? Lately, I’ve been doing more spiritual numbers, and I’ve been asked to play in several churches. I don’t always do what they call gospel, but songs with deep emotional feeling. People seem to really respond to those numbers, so maybe that’s something I’m called to do. A ministry through this blues music? It seems appropriate since so much of this music comes from the old gospel music. Blues music is supposed to be about healing the hurts of downtrodden folks. Most people see you on stage when you’re performing and putting on a show. Who are you when you’re not performing on stage? I am a father and a grandfather to two grandchildren. I’m also very close with my brother, Claude. What is one thing about you that most people would find surprising? Some folks find it surprising that I don’t drink or indulge in drugs. I do have an occasional libation when I perform. A little brandy & honey is good for the throat when I have to sing. I gave all that up a long time ago.
