History Hood County rich in history
G
ranbury and Hood County are rich in frontier folklore and Texas history. Granbury maintains a door to yesterday, with its Victorian architecture and charming county spirit. Locally owned shops and restaurants on the square are a focal point. Away from the town square, the city is bustling with big box stores, national retail stores and franchised eateries on Highway 377, the main thoroughfare in town. Dubbed a micropolis, new residents are drawn to the area by affordable housing, less urban congestion and a lower cost-of-living. A micropolis is not a suburb of a metropolitan area. Instead, it’s removed from the nearest big city.
First settlers
Hood County’s first Anglo settler was Charles Barnard, a hardy entrepreneur from the Northeast. Barnard expanded an Indian trading post near Waco to include a second post in 1847 on the Brazos River in the shadow of Comanche Peak. Comanche Peak was a sacred Indian mesa, west of the Brazos River. The towering property today is privately owned and not open to the public. Other stalwart pioneers began to settle in Hood County during the 1850s. Among them were Davy Crockett’s widow, Elizabeth Crockett, and their son, Robert Patton Crockett. Thomas Lambert was among the first to settle on the west banks of the Brazos River. He dubbed the spring-fed creek that flows through Granbury “Lambert Branch.”
County created
Hood County was created by a special act of the Texas Legislature in 1866. The county was named for General John Bell Hood, a Confederate hero. The legislature also decreed the county seat would be named for General Hiram B. Granbury, also a Confederate hero.

The Hood County Second-Empire style courthouse was built in 1891 and still stands at the center of the historic Granbury square as the county’s political pulse and governing center. A testament to time, the original Seth Thomas hand-wound clock purchased in 1891 for $1,400 still chimes as it did when it was first installed.
Agriculture important
Agriculture has long been one of Hood County’s leading industries, and cotton was the first leading crop. Livestock has also been important. As cotton production waned, peanuts and pecans became important crops. In 1942, 16,000 acres of peanuts were harvested. Around that same time, the average pecan crop in Hood County totaled more than 3 million pounds a year. In 1983, Hood County topped Texas pecan production with a whopping 6.1 million pounds.
Here comes the train
In 1887, the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railroad arrived in Granbury, triggering an economic boom.
A college town
Colleges were established in the 1870s. Granbury College was north of the town square. Add-Ran College, the predecessor of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, was established in Thorp Spring.
Historic preservation
Granbury’s highly successful historic preservation movement began in 1969 with the restoration of the Hood County Courthouse. Mary Lou Watkins, a descendant of the Nutt brothers, restored the old Nutt family home in
the late 1960s. Next the Nutt House building on the Granbury Square was restored. This restoration effort provided inspiration and served as an impetus to building owners to restore or refurbish historic buildings on the square. Granbury’s old town square was the first in Texas to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Local legislation in the early 1970s protects the architectural integrity of Granbury’s pristine 19th century structures. The 1891 courthouse is still in use today. Designed by W.C. Dodson of Waco, the structure was built for $40,000. A major restoration of the courthouse, which took two years, was completed in late 2011.
The river was dammed
The long-awaited damming of the Brazos River to create the 30-mile-long Lake Granbury in 1969 had a tremendous impact on the growth and economy of Hood County. Hood County was the fastest-growing county in Texas from 1980 to 1985 according to USA Today. The rapid growth of the county is a direct result of the creation of Lake Granbury and the revitalization of the city’s historic square. Wife of Davy Crockett buried here, in smallest state park BY MARK WILSON HOOD COUNTY NEWS

ood County is home to the state’s smallest state park - created in memory of the wife of one of Texas history’s most legendary heroes. The grave of Elizabeth Crockett, the second wife of Alamo hero Davy Crockett, is at Acton Cemetery, in eastern Hood County. Her plot is the entire state park - just 12 feet by 21 feet. It’s believed that her husband Davy, the frontiersman who became known as “king of the wild frontier” for his coonskin cap and sharpshooting, died in the battle of the Alamo, March 6, 1836. Elizabeth was awarded 1,280 acres – approximately six miles from Granbury – by the Republic of Texas for her husband’s service. Elizabeth reportedly left Tennessee with her two children and arrived to claim the land in 1856 in what become northeast Hood County. Davy Crockett had arrived in Texas from Tennessee and fought against Mexico in the Texas Revolution. A 28-foot-tall marble monument topped by a woman shading her eyes from the sun covers

the grave, in honor of Crockett and other Texas pioneer mothers. Several thousand people reportedly gathered to witness the dedication of the statue in 1913. The site became a state park in 1949. On the website TexasEscapes.com, Mike Cox wrote that after Elizabeth hired a surveyor to mark the land’s boundaries, she gave the man half the property as his payment. That left Crockett and her children about 640 acres of land on Rucker Creek. Davy Crockett had intended to settle in the northern part of Texas, Cox wrote. Davy had called Texas “the garden spot of the world.” Their son Robert Crockett built a small log cabin on the land. Two years later, he sold their first
Hood County home and built another on a creek, approximately a half mile away. Elizabeth Crockett lived in that second home until her death at age 72, Jan. 31, 1860. Cox wrote that on that day her apparel was the widow’s black she had worn since first learning of her husband’s death. She died while taking a stroll on the land. There are Crockett family descendants still living in the county. The Granbury chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, organized in 1987, is named for Elizabeth Crockett. The chapter had 26 charter members.

History lives outside Granbury Cresson: Place of growth
Natural gas exploration continues to bring growth to Cresson with drilling and service companies locating around town. Around the crossroads of Highway U.S. 377 and Highway 171, business properties are popping up. The city has expanded to about seven times the size of the original two square miles in 2000. Motorsport Ranch, a private racing park for sports car owners, along with individual food and retail businesses, marked the initial growth. In recent years, Motosport Ranch expanded to include a wake board park. In this controlled environment, wake boarders are able to practice their skills. Cresson is in three counties, Hood, Johnson and Parker - with most of the growth in Hood. Like most of North Central Texas, Cresson had it first settlers in the 1850s, and the settlement was named for one of the first, John Cresson. Cresson became a “crossroad” in 1856 with the Stage Coach Stand, a stop on the stage line from Jacksboro to Weatherford, Cresson, Granbury, Stephenville, Cleburne and Waco. In the 1880s Cresson was served by two railroads and had passenger service into the 1950s. In 1903 the ranching center had two banks, eight general stores, a drug store, lumberyard, two doctors, a justice of the peace and two deputies. The present community center was originally the school that was built in 1931 and in service until 1967. It next became the community center and has a historical marker.
Lipan: Hooping it up
Lipan is a quiet community in the northwest corner of Hood County that comes alive each winter to the “thump-thump” sound of a basketball on a hardwood floor. Modern Lipan High School Indian teams have a state title in 1994 and 2005 and have finished second in state three times. The Lady Indians went to state in 1954, 1995, 2003, 2011, 2012 and 2014. A majority of the 400 to 500 citizens in and around Lipan have deep roots, generations of their families have lived or still live there. Lipan is named for the Indian tribe that lived in the area. The county’s last Indian-settler fight happened on Robinson Creek, south of Lipan. The first settlers arrived in the Lipan area around 1853. The town was laid out by a “gentlemanly and reliable Irishman” Thomas A. Burns in

The building pictured in Cresson was originally the school that was built in 1931. The school was abandoned in 1967 after Cresson consolidated with Granbury school. A community group in Cresson formed in the late 1970s worked for restoration of the school. Today the school serves as a community center and hub of the Cresson community. the early 1870s. By 1895, Lipan was a community large enough to support several merchants, two blacksmiths, two cotton gins, doctors and schools. The first hospital in Hood County was in Lipan. The building is now the town’s community center where meals are served to senior citizens every Thursday. Evergreen Cemetery is the resting place for many of the area’s founding families, as well as one former Arkansas governor who retired penniless. Governor Drew left office and headed west seeking success. In 1876, he settled in Lipan.
Tolar: looking to future
Civil War veterans founded Tolar in 1870, and it was first incorporated in 1906. Expansion of the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railroad from Granbury to a small Hood County community seven miles southwest, set the stage for growth of Tolar. Originally called Squaw Creek Station by the railroad, the town was renamed Tolar after Capt. Alf H.H. Tolar, of Abilene, at the suggestion of Col. W.L. McGaughey, a local resident and state leader. Residential and business growth is happening within the boundaries of Tolar, and on the out-
skirts as well. The mile-square city sits on U.S. Highway 377 between Granbury to the east and a developing countryside to the west. The population outside the city is estimated to be considerably larger than that inside the city limits. However, many of those people identify themselves with the town. Before the Great Depression, Tolar had banks, mercantile stores, several groceries, an undertaker, blacksmith, saloons and a newspaper owned by Ashley Crockett, grandson of Davy Crockett from the Alamo. The area around Tolar still has a number of ranching operations, with a strong emphasis on cattle, horses and hay production.
Paluxy: Named for the river
Paluxy, 15 miles southwest of Granbury on Highway 51, was named for the river that runs through it. When flowing after heavy rain, the Paluxy River is known for a very swift current. John Meek helped establish the community and the county, and became one of the first four county commissioners. It was in Erath County until 1866, when Hood County was carved out of the region. There have been only a few small businesses in the town, and the surrounding area is farm and ranch land.

Tours of Granbury’s ghosts and legends are given every Friday and Saturday night. Meet the Lady in Red, the Faceless Girl, Indian Joe and maybe even John Wilkes Booth. If you plan ahead and make reservations you can take the “The Last Mile Cemetery Tour” at the historic Granbury City Cemetery on Friday or Saturday night.
Area known for ghosts, legends
G
ranbury is promoted as the place “where Texas history lives,” but the tales of who died here have drawn national attention. The mother-daughter team of Coletta Henderson and Brandy Herr have kept interest in local history alive - even though the subjects of their Granbury Ghosts and Legends Tour are not. Since the two started the clever business in April 2010, they have been featured on NBC 5, Fox 4 News and KERA Radio, and their tour has been named one of the seven best ghost tours in the U.S. by Frommer’s Travel Guides. The hour-long tours are given every Friday and Saturday night at 7 and 9:15. Or if you plan ahead and make reservations you can take the “The Last Mile Cemetery Tour” at the historic Granbury City Cemetery on Highway 51 about a mile north of the square on Friday or Saturday night at 10:45 p.m. Cost is $10 per person, $7 for children 12 and younger. Tour groups gather near the Nutt Hotel on Bridge Street, where the ghost of former owner Mary Lou Watkins is believed to be in residence.
Mysterious actor
On the opposite side of the square from the

Nutt House, the spirit of John Wilkes Booth is believed to occasionally make an appearance at the Granbury Opera House. According to local legend, Booth escaped from pursuers and lived in Granbury during the 1870s. Booth He was known as John St. Helen, and was a dark, mysterious man who walked with a distinct limp and quoted Shakespeare. After taking ill and believing to be on his deathbed, St. Helen allegedly confessed to a saloon owner, a Granbury attorney and a Dallas priest that he was, in fact, the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. After making a surprise recovery, Booth is believed to have fled Granbury and settled in Enid, Okla., committing suicide in 1903.
Other Crockett family members are buried here as well. Two Crockett log cabins were built in the Acton area, and one is now beneath an old ranch house. It features a tunnel to a nearby river bed - an escape route in case of an Indian attack.

Granbury Ghosts and Legends Tour
Granbury’s Crockett Street is named after family members of Alamo hero Davy Crockett, who settled here in the 1850s. Crockett’s widow, Elizabeth, is buried in Acton Cemetery, designated at the smallest state park in Texas.
Outlaw
The notorious outlaw Jesse James is believed by some to be buried, not in Missouri, but in James Granbury. According to legend, James, living under an assumed identity, became friends with Hood County Sheriff Oran Baker. After James’ death in 1951, Baker did a postmortem examination of the body. In 1996, the former sheriff wrote that he believed his late friend was the infamous outlaw James. Renovated Opera House is Granbury’s crown jewel BY RICK MAUCH HOOD COUNTY NEWS
O
n the outside it blends in with the rest of downtown Granbury - historic and rustic. But on the inside, there is an air of majesty surrounding the historic Granbury Opera House. Visit the building on any given occasion and listen as folks comment on the beauty of the recently restored landmark. It reopened in December 2013 with a gala unlike Granbury had seen in some time. Red carpet was rolled out. Dignitaries included city council members, county commissioners, state Sen. Brian Birdwell (RGranbury) and state Rep. Jim Keffer (R-Eastland). And there was even a special guest in attendance, someone who spent years making people laugh on television. Ruth Buzzi, former star of “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In,” was in attendance. She lives with her husband in Mingus (north of Stephenville). And this was all in spite of the biggest ice storm to hit the area in many years. The highlight of the evening was a selection of scenes from various Granbury Theatre Company productions. A week later the first show in the newly reopened theater was “A Christmas Carol,” and it was a big hit. The $3.4 million project was a long time in the works. But slowly it became a reality. And now it is the city’s pride and joy. “It is a fully renovated state-ofthe-art facility that graces Granbury’s rich tradition of theater,” said Kent Whites, executive director of the Granbury Theatre Company. And Granbury does have a rich theater tradition. The Opera House first graced the square before the turn of the century. It is even said the ghost of John Wilkes Booth haunts the place.

Folks are coming from all over to attend shows at the newly renovated and reopened historic Granbury Opera House on the square. The $3.4 million project includes a much larger stage, more spacious seating upstairs and downstairs, elevators, and enlarged backstage area and dressing rooms. And while it has been closed and re-opened on a number of of occasions, the historical building has never experienced anything like this. Still, amidst the major renovation remained some traditional parts of the theater. The walls in the seating part of the theater remained virtually intact because of the great acoustics. They were, however, cleaned thoroughly and somewhat refurbished. Most of the rest of the theater underwent a complete makeover. It is now state-of-the-art from the stage to the seats to speakers so carefully hidden along a proscenium arch around the stage. Visitors can expect to see props and set pieces appear from below
the main stage during productions which has also been expanded to nearly twice as large as before. The 33-foot stage, combined with a 7-foot apron area, equals a 40-foot deck, an increase of 16 feet. And with 7,600 square feet added to the wing space and new dressing rooms, the backstage area is bigger than ever before. Each dressing room, one for males and one for females, houses around 13-15 actors. There are also two star dressing rooms. High-definition televisions allow actors backstage to keep track of the production onstage as they await their entrance. The televisions will also allow folks in the lobby to view the show.

Landings at the top of the two Victorian staircases between the first and second floors allow visitors to gaze out the window at the sights of historic downtown Granbury. Rob Keehn, superintendent of the project, said this is his third theater project. He previously renovated theaters in Kansas City, Mo. and Kansas City, Kan. “Folks in the city of Granbury, they’re going to enjoy this,” he said. “This is more of a historic remodel. It’s more fun to do this. In construc-

Events

T
he Texas Independence Day Celebration is the first outdoor festival each year with activities planned to remember the Texas Declaration of Independence signed March 2, 1836. Vendors and historical exhibits around the square include vintage clothing, food, art and gadgets from 19th century Texas. Children’s activities, a cannon display and a chuck wagon cookoff are also part of the celebration. And it wouldn’t be a Granbury festival without a parade. The parade includes horse-drawn buggies, covered wagons and floats depicting historical events. The Fourth of July celebration draws the biggest crowd. Vendors on the square, fireworks over the lake and a huge parade are part of the festival. The year winds down with the Night of Lights Christmas Parade on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Outdoors
Another sport that has drawn a lot of attention in Hood County is tennis, which is growing in popularity thanks to events such as the annual Hood County News Tennis Festival. There are various courts around the county, some public and some private, on which folks can work on their game or just have a friendly match.
No need to stay indoors with these activities

o that ol’ summer sun is just begging you to get outdoors? Not to worry. There are ample opportunities for outdoor recreational activities in Hood County. If “going for a drive” means more than seeing the scenery (though our golf courses are quite beautiful), grab your clubs, tee it up and see what your best score is on one of many golf courses within a stone’s throw. And speaking of throwing, maybe your type of golf doesn’t involve clubs at all. If disc golf, one of the nation’s newest growing fads, is your thing, there’s a course for that too, right near downtown Granbury. But if you’re into a different racket, say a sport that uses, well, racquets, there are numerous tennis courts around to keep you happy and slap-

Golf has been a popular activity for many years in Hood County, with a variety of courses in every direction. There is a mixture of private and public courses. Tournaments for youth and adults are a regular fixture, including the Hood County News Junior Golf Tournament series, which is held several times throughout the year for ages 17 and under. Granbury High also has a solid golf tradition, with the boys team advancing to state this past season.

There’s no shortage of recreation in county

here is no shortage of opportunities for fresh air and recreation in Hood County. Soon, there will be a skateboard and BMX bike park off Crossland Road near the soccer fields. Following is a list of the area’s parks and other attractions.

T
he Hood County Sheriff’s Posse could show up just about anywhere - usually in connection with supporting the sheriff. After the May 15 EF-4 tornado that pummeled the Rancho Brazos subdivision, members of the non-commissioned volunteer group showed up to help in any way they could - with manpower, setting up roadblocks and managing traffic control. Sheriff’s Posse Trail Boss Biff Temple, who is Sheriff Roger Deeds’ chief deputy, said the group once was called on to look for a missing person, although the search was quickly called off when the person was found. Brenda Hill Massingill, the captain of the Sheriff’s Posse, said, “We volunteer for anything the sheriff needs. And if the police department needed something, we would be there for them too.” She said the group stages events to benefit local charity organizations such as the Children’s
Advocacy Center and Kids Armor for Hope. “We put on horse shows to raise money,” Massingill explained. Massingill said that there are approximately 44 current Sheriff’s Posse members. “It (the number) goes up and down,” she said. “We’re getting a lot of young people now. Some are couples. This is the first year we’re letting in people who can’t ride; some do field work.” The group’s treasurer is Dana Ruth McCoy. The chaplain is Doug Pruitt, and the secretary is Dee Brown. The Sheriff’s Posse also provides an even more publicly visible ceremonial function, riding in local events such as the Texas Independence Day Parade and the General Granbury Birthday Parade. Sheriff’s Posse memberships are $24 per person. Lifetime memberships are also available. Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday each month at the reunion grounds, 641 Reunion Court, in Granbury. McCoy noted that the Sheriff’s Posse also donates money to the Boys & Girls Club of Hood County, and raises scholarship money for senior students within the county. That effort expanded last year with the creation of the Lance McLean Scholarship Fund. “We are working with Hood County educational officials to hopefully carry this on from year to year,” McCoy said of the fund named in honor of the Sheriff’s Office deputy who died in the line of duty on June 29 after being mortally wounded the previous day. m.wilson@hcnews.com | 817-573-7066, ext. 254

he Hood County Library has programs of interest to all ages and offers more than 57,000 items and subscribes to many magazines and three newspapers. Over 500 book titles are available through the digital library, and 8,000 DVDs are available to check out. Children have access to computer interactive storybooks via Tumblebooks. Through the TexShare Program, patrons have access to 49 scholarly databases with thousands of peer-reviewed articles for academic research. The Acton Library is a lending and sharing type library and is run by volunteers.

Airport
The Granbury Regional Airport handles an average of 1,200 aircraft “operations” - landings and takeoffs - per month on its 3,600-foot runway. There are 87 aircraft based there. New hangars have been built and more are in the works. A new 5,200-foot runway will open in 2016 or 2017.
Longer runway will attract corporate jets
S
ince Aviation Director Gary Hawkins arrived at Granbury Regional Airport, he has focused on building a reputation for having one of the friendliest little airports in Texas. Combined with affordable fuel rates and proximity to the Metroplex, the airport is a perfect environment for business to take off when the 5,200-foot runway opens in 2016 or 2017, Hawkins said. “We’re getting better recognition and are known for being friendly in nature, having a good atmosphere and being down home,” Hawkins said. “A major revenue source is fuel sales, and we saw an increase of 12 percent last year. We have a lot of regulars from Amarillo and other places that come here because of our low fuel prices.” The city of Granbury, the FAA and TxDOT joined in an $18 million project to add to the runway, giving the airport the capability of handling

operations for larger aircraft, including corporate jets. “Corporations can fly in, visit their area stores in Granbury, Stephenville, Weatherford and other areas, get back on their jet and get home by the end of the day,” Hawkins said. “The nuclear energy traffic should increase too with our proximity to Comanche Peak. “Based on my 20 years’ experience in this business, I think we will see an increase of (air) traffic of 25 percent almost immediately when the new runway opens.” In the meantime, growth is occurring off the runway. Hawkins said that a 100-foot by 100-foot hangar has been built and houses five additional planes. Plus, plans are under way for construction of a terminal and large hangar with space for planes to be kept overnight. Air Evac has expanded operations locally and moved its regional main-
tenance facility to the airport from Greenville. “They cover a five-state area, and they (helicopters) come to Granbury for scheduled inspections,” Hawkins said. “That’s about 40 aircraft a month, and it adds 10 employees to the local economy.” The airport handles an average of 1,200 aircraft “operations” - landings and takeoffs - per month on its 3,600-foot runway. owners Association. The asphalt runway for the general aviation airstrip is 3,500 feet long and 50 feet wide. There is also a parallel grass landing strip on the west side of the main landing strip.
The Landings
This second private airstrip in Pecan Plantation opened in 2011 and is about seven miles from the Pecan Plantation Airport. The airstrip features a 3,100-foot paved runway and grass taxiways. Homeowners who live around The Landings own portions of the runway and provide for its maintenance costs.
Nassau Bay Air Park
Nassau Bay Air Park is a private grass field located at 3505 Nassau Court in the Acton area, serving lot owners who live alongside the 2,800-foot runway, which is 200 feet wide.

T
he winding path of the Brazos River makes for a scenic Lake Granbury. Bluffs rise high over portions of the lake.
Boat ramps Six public boat ramps are located on Lake Granbury, including the
Granbury City Ramp, at the west end of the Pearl Street (Business 377) bridge. The Granbury facility has a threelane launch and 46 parking spaces each 40 feet long for easy handling of trucks and trailers. Public rest rooms at the ramp area feature selfflush toilets and heat in the winter. A single ramp operated by the city is adjacent to the Granbury Re-
sort Conference center. It is one of the deeper ramps on the lake. For safety reasons, no swimming or diving is allowed at the ramp areas. The boat ramps operated by the Brazos River Authority include Thorp Spring Park, Hunter Park, Rough Creek Park and deCordova Bend Park. Free camping is permitted at the
BRA parks. The sites are primitive there are no hook-ups for water or electric.

on the right. In some places, the original river channel is different than the path many boaters travel. Boaters should always use caution on the lake. Sometimes the channel can be narrow, while it’s wide in other spots. The original channel buoys are white with black markings, while the newer ones are white with red markings. The solar-powered buoy lights can assist with nighttime navigation on the lake. All bridge areas on the lake are marked as “No Wake” zones. The “No
Wake” markers at the bridges are posted for safety reasons.

Lake
The Brazos River Authority constructed Lake Granbury and the deCordova Bend dam in 1969 as a water supply reservoir for water storage. The lake, part of the Brazos River, serves as a source of water for municipalities, electric service providers, industry and agriculture. Lake Granbury covers approximately 7,945 acres with 121 miles of shoreline. It is 32 river miles long and is approximately 70 feet at its deepest point. Heat, wind, drought conditions and water supply usage may affect the lake level, and it can fluctuate up to 30 feet, according to BRA spokeswoman Judi Pierce. In 2014, the lake has been more than 9 feet low, a new record. Pierce said the lake’s conservation pool is around 693 mean sea level (msl), though a lake level at 692.7 msl is considered normal. Lake patrols are by BRA lake rangers and a Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden. Visit the Brazos River Authority website at www.brazos.org for lake regulations and more information about the lake.

exas Governor Rick Perry said that Texas is “wide open for business.” The same could be said for Granbury and Hood County, where economic development is flourishing. From an airport expansion that will feature a runway large enough for Lear jets to major chain stores to a $10 million recreation center Hood County has it all. The many amenities offered by the community are why a significant portion of the county’s 50,000plus population live here not because they grew up here, because this is where they choose to be. Gated communities offer beautiful homes, country clubs and golf courses that for years have made

the lake community attractive to retirees. But there is also much to offer families: athletics, parks, schools and, soon, a skateboard and BMX park located near the Dana Vollmer Municipal Swim Center and Granbury City Park. Nearby, at the Moore Street ballfields, is a new, fenced dog park. Ordinances passed by city leaders, and guidance provided by the Historic Preservation Commission are responsible for Granbury’s cohesive, aesthetically appealing look. The charm of the town square has been enhanced by the recent reopening of the renovated historic Granbury Opera House, where shows feature quality, experienced performers. The courthouse recently underwent a restoration funded largely by the Texas Historical Commission.
Just a few blocks from the square is the City Beach, the upscale Hilton Garden Inn and the Granbury Resort Conference Center, which has proven to be a popular location for wedding receptions. Visitors can stroll along a boardwalk that provides easy access to the town square and to Hewlett Park on the other side of East Pearl Street. Located near the airport is the Commerce Centre of Granbury. Within a few years, the city will build a multi-million-dollar water desalinization plant. Weatherford College selected Granbury for a satellite campus, and that campus has an ever-growing student population. The site allows young people and non-traditional students in Hood County to work toward a four-year degree while saving thousands in tuition and related costs.

Outside the historic district - on the east side of the county, toward Fort Worth - are more modern stores and fast-food restaurants that are rapidly growing in number. “They’re already talking about Phase III for that area,” said Granbury City Councilman Mickey Parson. The development around H-E-B is known as Luton Ranch. Soon, a 123,000-square-foot Kroger store featuring jewelry, clothing and other non-grocery items will be built across the highway from H-E-B. It is expected that other businesses will be drawn to the adjoining pad sites, causing another growth explosion at the Highway 377/Highway 4 area. Parson said negotiations are under way for another restaurant next to the new Taco Casa, and Auto Zone has been “inked and approved

for their spot next to Christian Brothers Automotive.” An Aldi’s grocery store is opening off Harbor Lakes Drive across the highway from the current Kroger location. Some have suggested that when Kroger opens its new, bigger store, its “old” location would be a good spot for the Hood County Library. The Commissioners Court intends to expand the library due to population growth and the increasing number of books and other materials. The Hood County Recreation Center across from Acton Middle School (a short distance from the Highway 377/Highway 4 intersection) is expected to open in the first quarter of 2015. The voter-approved facility will be staffed and
managed by the YMCA of Hood County. It will feature an outdoor recreational pool, as well as an indoor competition pool where swim meets will be held. Phase 1 of the rustic Knox Ranch development near the airport will soon move forward, according to Parson. Located near Knox Ranch and the airport, the Lake Granbury Medical Center (LGMC) has a Level 4 trauma designation and an air ambulance on site. Another air ambulance company also services Hood County. LGMC has six outpatient locations and is continually recruiting physicians. Ninety-five percent of its physicians are board certified. The hospital has 424 employees and an annual
payroll of more than $21 million. In 2013, medical staff handled more than 19,000 emergency room visits and almost 5,000 surgeries. Earlier this year, the Lake Granbury Economic Development Corporation board welcomed Warren Ketteman as the new executive director. Ketteman said that previous leaders have done a “bang-up job” of promoting Granbury as a tourist destination and attracting retail businesses. He stated as his primary goal the nurturing of small local businesses to help them prosper and grow. I
n the shadows of Granbury’s historic buildings, talented artists create their unique and award-winning work. Sculptors, painters, photographers, glass artists and even a few who can’t be described with classic titles make Granbury a burgh of artistic talent. Choosing just a few artists to highlight is risking leaving out many worthy of recognition. It would take a book to do justice to local talent. Among talented sculptors (who can also paint) is veterinarian Scott Myers. He is most known for his bronze busts of a dozen Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees; the sculptures are housed in the Canton, Ohio, museum. Another sculptor/painter, Mike Tabor, high-school teacher and rancher (when do these guys sleep?), recently completed a commissioned life-sized bronze sculpture of father/son duo Team Hoyt. Son, Rick, with severe cerebral palsy, and his father, Dick, have participated in hundreds of marathons and triathlons together - Rick in a special vehicle powered by his devoted father. Elise Techentine and Stacy Watkins are “unclassified.” Both are masters of design. Techentine (you can find her work at the Gallery at Granbury Theater Company) assembles found objects, often unearthed in a field or junk yard, into whimsical art that makes you smile. Watkins, her running buddy and owner of Your Private Collection, works in resin. Watkins imbeds abandoned objects into beautiful wall-hangings frequently inhabited by angels. Sometimes, this artist treats the resin so her art magically glows in the dark. Skilled painters abound in Granbury. Bob Cook, watercolorist, last year earned the prestigious Silver Star Award in the National Watercolor Society’s 93rd Annual Competition after claiming best-of-show awards in several regional competitions. Cook favors luminous street scenes encountered on his travels. Van Johnson, an oil painter, focuses on wildlife and hunting scenes. Ducks Unlimited recently selected him as the 2014 Texas Ducks Unlimited Sponsor Artist of the Year with “Robin is Ready,” a colorful depiction of a retriever swimming through floating golden reeds. Bridging the gap between watercolor and oil mediums is Rebecca Zook who paints in both acrylic or water soluble oil. A graphic/web designer as well as a fine artist, Zook describes her work as painterly realism. Artefactz owner, Cynthia James, creates one-of-a-kind museum quality art glass jewelry and sculptures. James works with dichroic glass, metal, clay and found objects to fashion beautiful and unusual jewelry for one’s self and for one’s home. Snap and Scoot, recently established by photographer, Phyllis Webster, is a travel and photography event company dedicated to offering amateur to intermediate photographers a specialized photographic experience. Not only are these (and more) unusually fine artists, but they are also excellent neighbors. ood County offers a non-stop learning environment for those in various stages of adult life. If you’re looking for a GED, associate’s degrees, specialized certifications, workforce training, continuing education and community education classes, including retirement planning classes, you’ll find them all here.
Weatherford College
Weatherford College offers a wide variety of associate’s degrees, and workforce and continuing education courses at the Granbury campus. Fall 2013 enrollment was 363 students.
Christian Women’s Job Corps
The Christian Women’s Job Corps (CWJC) was created in 2003 to help women in Hood County move forward from dependency to self-sufficiency by learning life and job skills. To be admitted to the program, women must go through an application and interview process. Once accepted, participants attend a 12-week program to equip them to find a good job and learn skills to be self-sufficient and responsible to succeed in life. CWJC also offers GED and various computer classes. Scholarships are available. Women who have been helped in the past include widows, single mothers with children, women with disabilities, abused women, women

Since opening in the fall of 2011 with 130 students, the Granbury location’s popularity has grown steadily and reached 363 students in fall 2013. While Hood County and Weatherford College have had a close relationship over the years, it wasn’t until 2013 that the Legislature officially put Hood County into Weatherford College’s service area. That official status has given Weatherford College the foundation to build programs and increase options for Hood County residents. Students can earn an associate’s degree without having to drive to the Weatherford campus. The center offers a complement of credit and workforce and continuing education courses and programs. The college has a strong partnership with Tarleton State University. “Students can transfer the core curriculum plus an additional 16 hours in business electives (toward the Tarleton business degree),” said David Russell, in charge of the Granbury campus. Weatherford College has also partnered with Tarleton to offer an Associate of Arts in Teaching degree (AAT). The degree includes the common curriculum core classes and provides the introductory preparation for students wanting to become certified teachers in Texas. After completing the degree, students may apply to the Tarleton Teacher Education Program and enroll in courses offered on the Weatherford College campus or transfer to another university to complete their bachelor’s degree and certification requirements. Weatherford College officials plan for Hood County students to someday be able to earn bachelor’s and even master’s degrees at the local campus. Tram Service New tram pampers visitors

isitors to Granbury’s historic square can take a load off when taking home a load of shopping bags. The city has purchased a new, 21-seat tram similar to the type used at Six Flags Over Texas. The acquisition will be used to transport visitors to and from parking areas in the historic district around the square, primarily during spring, summer and fall. “We’re trying to make access to our parking as convenient and user friendly as possible,” City Manager Wayne McKethan said. “We understand that because of the popularity of the square, parking can be an issue, and that’s why we’ve added parking around the square. But we want to make sure that (visitors) find it easy to get to and that they do as much shopping as possible.” Since the tram is an open air mode of transportation, it is likely that it will not be used in the winter, though McKethan stated that it might nevertheless be called into service during the Christmas holidays. The tram will be in operation on weekends
Anyone wishing to ride the city’s new, 21-seat tram need only flag it down to be transported to spots around the square and historic district. and possibly during performances at the newly renovated Granbury Opera House. McKethan said it also will be utilized during conferences at the Granbury Resort Conference Center. The transport is handicap accessible. It has for-
ward and backward facing seats, and is equipped with a strobe light and rain curtain. The tram is easy to spot, and McKethan said that anybody wanting a lift can simply flag it down.
