Former MP and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Jim Prentice is now the leader of the Alberta’s Progressive Conservative Party and premier-designate of the province of Alberta. Progressive Conservative (PC) Party members landslide support resulted in a wide margin win on the first ballot last September 6, with contenders Ric McIver and Thomas Lukazsuk getting 2,742 and 2,681 votes, respectively. Less than 72 hours after being elected leader of the PC party Prentice meet with municipal leaders- Edmonton Mayor Doon Iveson and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. Asked how his meeting went, Mayor Don Iveson said he and Jim Prentice agreed on the challenges facing Edmonton — namely affordable housing, opportunities for children and youth living in poverty and funding the

city’s police force. The two leaders also talked about the future of Edmonton’s LRT funding and agreed more money is needed but set no timeline. Prentice, too, said transit funding will be one of his priorities as leader. “I think the need for LRT — and the provincial government and our cities to work together on the buildout of LRTs, so we can have world-calibre cities with world-calibre transportation networks — to me, that’s always been obvious as a citizen of this province.” After meeting with Iveson, Prentice drove to Calgary to meet with Mayor Naheed Nenshi. Mayor Naheed Nenshi says Prentice could post some quick wins if he took action on some things for Calgary. Nenshi says abandoning plans to have the province take over 911 dispatch services, restoring funding for Calgary’s performing arts centre and approving continued on page 06

Overcoming the Irrational

“They thought that the bullets would silence us. But they failed. And then out of that silence came thousands of voices. The terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this: Weakness, fear, and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born.”– from the book I Am Malala “How one Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World” by Malala Yousafzai

I found the book I Am Malala an appropriate read on this month of September. The book I Am Malala is based on the story of a 10 years old girl who was raised in a once peaceful area of Pakistan transformed by terrorism of Taliban. Malala was taught to stand up for what she believes. So she fought for her right to be educated and nearly lost her life when shot point blank while riding the bus. No one expected her to survive but she did and became the international symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize nominee last 2011. This month opens with a holiday thru Labor Day…schools open… students went back to another promising school year… we remember the 13 years anniversary of 911… we gain a new Alberta premier

designate through Mr. Jim Prentice… we welcome the 1st Filipino female envoy in Canada thru Philippine Ambassador Petronila Garcia… we watched the rigorous Tour of Alberta… and many more community activities and fundraising events. As we are swamped with one event after another, we are also touched by news on what’s happening in the world- the beheading of another journalist and aid worker by ISIS, the rising numbers of death because of the Ebola Outbreak in South Africa, and other news of civil war and violence along with the new release of i-Phone 6. Events especially tragic or traumatic ones tend to augment our irrational tendencies, on both a personal or societal level. We fall victim to irrational thoughts every now and

then, particularly when we are feeling vulnerable. Perhaps we make leaps of logic, get paranoid, or jump to conclusions. But crisis often catalyze change and in many ways events such as 911, Ebola Outbreak, and the outbreak of violence and war in various part of the world has changed our world for the good- making us more compassionate, considerate and careful. As we reflected on the impacts of these events, we hopefully turned our temptation for paranoia into a catalyst for change. When I was watching the 13th anniversary of 911, a friend commented, “Haven’t we done this long enough? Can’t we stop now on memorializing 911?” My answer to him is “No we must continue.” After more than a decade the immediate fear may have subsided

but the rage continues and the wound never quiet heals. Visual cues on 911 made you recall the terrorist attacks but none of your feelings were even remotely close to the heartbreak, loss and fear that have been instilled into the victims, survivors, family and friends who are forever tied to this tragedy. Have we truly examined the reality of the terror attacks and what they actually meant? I believe that 911 was the prominent salvo to date in the war between militant Islam or “Islamofascism” (as Christopher Hitchers termed it) and the secular West. I understand US President Obama initial refusal to tackle the ISIS head on has to do with liberal values, political correctness and a laudable misguided attempt to not stigmatize America’s Muslim/Arab community that can create Islamaphobia (an

EXCLUSIVELY FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS “If you can see, look, if you can look, observe, if you can act, absorb”

Parents always want what is best for their children. Proper education is the only precious gift hey can leave behind as legacy. What a busy way to meet the month of September. We have the opening of schools and an early drop of snow. The winter season has come early. Goodbye to a wonderful summer. Anyway we have to face the reality of life. Let us be prepared in every field of our endeavors with optimism, courage and strength so that we could go through every trials and challenges as we jour-

ney on to this life. Students are back to schools at all levels from elementary, secondary and college. As a student, how you would go through this new venture in life, how you would be in the right field or degree or course you have chosen, how you would be successful will have to depend on your own interest, capabilities, patience persistence, perseverance and enthusiasm. We have to consider also the financial aspect and moral support to work it out. If you want to learn more about the rules of the road of life as a student, if you want to go on despite some odds and obstacles and if you want to see

your future good and successful have some sets of credo to observe that will serve as your guiding tool. Be influenced by many kinds of people, teachers, professionals name it. Be a bookworm reader and get some insights of people who have become successful despite many trials and challenges on their way. I want to pass along to you some of the things I learned. This is for your generation. Have the courage to take what is difficult, what is complex. Render it simply and apply what is right. It takes a lot of skill, of human understanding, stamina, courage and heart to do it. I’m calling and asking you out to make yourself visible to your needs, interests and passion especially in the field of learning. You need to be focused on your chosen field of studies using your own interest in life. Have a dream and try to make it a reality. Dreams can motivate you. Believe that it is your dream and vision that will fulfill what you desire in life to be. Be drawn to the idea as a

seer who makes vision a contagious one. This is a vision that allows you to engage to do courageous action always against the odds but only with hope that calls for a leap of faith. Go beyond the evidence to create new possibilities. Seek to study and be informed to the human condition---aspire for a life that is with a purpose and meaning through your persistence and hard work in the field of learning. To be a successful student you have to believe in your abilities, have your own goal in life. Push yourself to new limits and use skills and knowledge every day. Thirst for knowledge. Approach each class, each book and daily assignments with enthusiasm and joy. Develop self -discipline to build out the best in you and in others. Like what Randy Pausch said in his book “The last Lecture” and here I quote,” It is not about to achieve your dream, aspirations in life. It is about to lead your life. If you lead your life the right way, your fu-

ture will take care of itself. Success and fulfillment of your dream will come to you.” As a student commit to excellence by learning with passion, leading with integrity and serving with respect. There are eight traits to observe and absorb by you as you go through. Committing, serving , learning , leading, respect , passion , action and integrity. Have responsibility to find how these eight concepts and traits that can help you transform into better student and citizen. In learning with passion, how do you fall in love with your subject area and imagine how it can change you and your world, one small step at a time. How do you find mentors and mentees to take part in the great generational exchange of knowledge. In leading with integrity, how do you discover yourself enough to truly know your own values and ethics, How do you engage others in conversational discourse about your personal future. How do you seek

conscientious harmony to find common purpose to your fellow men. In your own credo, have excellence as your guiding light with the values and insights that were already instilled in your mind and being. Your journey to your path of learning will surely be a success with your commitment and strong faith to God and to yourself. You can do it…… “For parents the options for educating your children really are endless one. And while that it is a good thing, it can be also overwhelming. “. There are questions to think for a sensible answer like….Why you should not or you should put to home school your children? With the many changes in all aspects of life, parents usually have their concerns over their children as to their health, as to their safety, as to the process of learning and also as to budget of time and money. There are some faced with the reality that parents could not afford exclusive private continued on page 06

Alberta has a new Premier! the Calgary Metropolitan Plan would be good for the city. “There are broader and bigger issues around the city charter, around long-term infrastructure funding, around funding for transit that need to be put in to place quickly,” said Nenshi. And while they didn’t talk about new taxation powers or hammer out a timeline for a big-city charter, Nenshi said Prentice making a priority of meeting with the leaders of two Alberta cities whose combined population exceeds 2 million people was more than a mere gesture. “That means a lot to me,” Nenshi said. “It’s not just window dressing, as far as I’m concerned. It shows a real understanding of what’s driving this province.” The mayor added that, under past premiers, “city issues have not been able to move forward in as expedient a manner as I would have liked, and I’ve been very forthright about that over time. But I’m also

optimistic, and I think we will be able to move this stuff forward … and really get into the work that we need to do.” Premier Designate Prentice also named his transition team that will help him as the newlyelected leader of Alberta’s Progressive Conservative Party to form his government. They are: Robin Campbell is the current MLA for West Yellowhead, and also the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. He has a background in labour relations, acting as a president for the United Mine Workers of America prior to entering politics. He lives in Jasper. He is the current chairman of Hearn & Associates, and serves on the board of directors for the Royal Bank of Canada. He lives in Calgary. Stephen Mandel served as Edmonton’s mayor from 2004 through to 2013,

where he spearheaded massive infrastructure upgrades including expanding the city’s LRT system and supporting the construction of the new downtown arena and Blatchford development. EXCLUSIVELY FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS school that others have no choice but to put them in public school. When making educational choices for your offspring, remember to take everything everyone tells you about their own experience with a grain of salt. After listening to their side consider your own side and have the options to choose on to serve what you really desire for your children and will keep your finances and effort coincide. From my own observation and interview, some parents describe home school system is ideally for them spending learning with their precious flock, they are very fortunate or glossing over the gory details a bit like most rewarding enterprise in life, There are others who have opinion that home schooling is hard really, really hard. That does not mean you won’t enjoy it in the good scheme of things, just do not expect everything in go right all the time simply because you are making a sacrificial choice. On the other hand, other school may not be entirely forthcoming about pitfalls of their choices either. In the end you have to decide what fits your children best and go with it. In home schooling – there are a lot of benefits according to a mother I interviewed. Children are closer to one another and to their parents than they would otherwise be if they had gone away to school starting with kindergarten. Being closer involves rubbing one another, the wrong way sometimes but that is how you wear away your rough edges. There are negative as well.. There have been times when you were worn out from teaching and assisting in the learning process that you had little energy left for yourself as their mother. She had to remind herself that her primary calling is to be with her children as their mother and for a reason lay down her role as their teacher.

It was not easy because according to her for several years her identity had been wrapped up in being a home schooler and she feared being judged a failure. But ultimately she finally concluded that we must value obedience and consider real situation over the opinions of others. Being in private school has seen its benefits as well. Attending school has allowed children to see other adults perspectives and observe different styles of teaching. Being in public school---if the desire to make this choice for some parents, for their own reason and concern and work for their children, parents have to abide in the public educational system and process of learning. There is a certain perspective that Christian kids going through public school acquire it and do appreciate the system of learning. They seem less dogmatic that those who are schooled in an all Christian environments, while they hold strong to their own faith. They have had the experience of interacting with and enjoying the foundation of non-believers. Whatever choice you make for your children kind of school wear it with pride but thread lightly on the decisions of those around you. As a home schooler, a mother steered it clear home schooling literature and blogs and would rather have turned naked through the street than attend a home schooling con vention fearing the shattering her ever-fragile mommy ego, One mother said the she is not sure the hermit-like existence is entirely healthy, but the alternative was to walk away from encounters with other moms feeling defeated rather than encouraged. Understanding that your choices are just that and there is certainly a lot of gray out there. The

important thing is to be a light whatever you are placed. Education is not just an issue for parents however you may not be weighing the options of private versus public but education is not a process that ends on the day you receive your diploma. Each day we all make choices that influence our thinking for better or for worse, I often hear Christian debates the moral merits of books, film and music but we must also train ourselves to consider the intellectual merits of these as well. Whether you are pro conning school choices for your children or sitcoms for yourself, remember that it is who you are, is founded on the work of God on your behalf not on what school your child attends or what is currently in your Netflix queue. Show grace to those around you just as you wish to be shown grace. I think the intellectual choices we make should be like any other choice reasoned out and prayed over in light to the gospel and our desire to live it out. It is part of the immense diversity of God’s people and His plan for individual lives that we can all take the same principles and can apply them to very different situation and yet has the same goal in mind to bring along to Him and accomplish His work on earth. To my fellow parents, the choice is yours. We only want what is best for our children when it comes to education. Pray and hope no matter what kind of school your children are in, think of the positive input they could benefit in their entire learning experiences. It is not the school but the student itself that counts the most. The cognitive and affective aspects that will give impact to the life of our children are still the best to hope for.

Filipino Catholic Society of theDiocese of Calgary… Ang misang Tagalog ay pinasimulan ng Filipino Catholic Society of the Diocese of Calgary (FCSDC).

5 easy Fall Do-ityourself car maintenance By Manuel Perez

With autumn’s shorter days, cooler temperatures and inclement weather drawing closer, now is a good time to get your car ready for the demands of the coming driving season. Although some seasonal car maintenance will require the assistance of a qualified auto mechanic, here are five, simple do-it-yourself car maintenance projects to make your auto better prepared for fall and save you the labor cost of having these services done by a mechanic. 1) Wiper Blades. It should be replace every 6 months or annually. You generally use your wipers more frequently in the fall and winter. They’ll also be taking a lot more abuse from road grime and windshieldwasher solvent, so it’s best to have a fresh set 2) Tire Pressure. That includes the spare tire. The reason is tire pressure drops one PSI (pound per square inch), for every 10-degree drop in temperature. So check your tires on a weekly basis. The proper inflation pressure will generally be listed in your vehicle’s owner manual and/or noted on a sticker located on the driver’s doorjamb. 3) Check your fluid level. Washer fluid. Make sure that is suited for cold weather. Fall is also a good time to check your level of antifreeze in the coolant recovery reservoir. If you find that you are below the required minimum stamped onto the side of that opaque container, add the appropriate quantity of properly diluted fluid to that reservoir and not to the radiator. Make sure that you use the correct fluid because green and orange antifreeze/coolant cannot be mixed. Also good idea to check your brake fluid level and add some brake fluid. Take note that if the level is below the max line, its one of the good indicator that you need to check your brake condition. Make sure that your brake linings (pads and shoes) are ok. 4) Air Filter. It should be replaced twice a year. Most vehicle are easy to check and replaced the air filter. A restrict air flow will cause bad fuel economy, performance and emission problems. 5) Battery and Lighting. Many electrical and ignition problems stem from loose or corroded battery connections. If you notice corrosion on the posts or cable connectors, use an appropriate brush. This is a very inexpensive, yet handy tool that you can get at any auto parts store. And clean both (posts) completely, and then reconnect everything snuggly and securely. For safety, make sure all of the car’s lights are working; it’s important for you to see, as well as be seen, during autumn’s longer and darker nights. And always follow your owners manual.

Johnson Space Center

One of the most attractive southern US destinations known for its rich superlative style, natural resources and endless activities to be had from outdoor lifestyles to high tech Mecca - Houston offers just about anything to what your heart desire. Being there just for a short time limits all the things I wanted to do, but only did what I think personally would be the most sensible thing to do while in the city. A tour of the city is often on the top of my agenda before anything else I can get involved in. As I meander snapping photos of anything that attracts me, it opens an invaluable perspective of what makes Houston often the choices for those who are career minded and opt to go for an achievable affluent lifestyle. Towering sky scrapers dotted a few avenues and one I had an opportunity to view the city from 65th floor of JP Morgan Chase tower. There are also several historical buildings that are preserved that houses art galleries, market squares and cafes. Wall to wall graffiti adds even more vibrancy to many heritage buildings and drama to cultural landscape of the city.

Affordable housing, cost of living, jobs and quality of life are often the driving force in continuous increase in population. What makes Houston is attractive is their proactive approach to the residences and offers many incentive programs for investors. There is no state or local income tax imposes to the residents. Commodities are often very affordable, restaurant from just about all kinds of culture are in abundance. The state offer training and retraining programs for jobseekers, employment assistance and job placement through Houston Workforce Commission and other regional colleges located throughout the city. Houston is the most populous city in Texas and the fourth most populous city in the US. One can only conclude these phenomena while meandering through the downtown area. There are over 3,600 energy related offices in the city. Houston is the hub of oil and energy related industry and account for all the major research and exploration technology in the oil production and pipeline implementation. While energy is the

Johnson Space Center aka Mission Control Center is NASA’s center for space training. It consists of 100 buildings situated inside the 1,600 acres of land parcel exclusively for the space administration activities. The center offers

There are art programs and grants available through colleges and funding for those who qualify to get into the program. The Saving Cross of Christ By Fr. Edmund F. Vargas

hell, for that matter, is a theological consequence of our human freedom which is the basis of our human dignity. Our response to God’s gift of faith is a fundamental choice between light and darkness, between life and death. And judgment is inherent in the choice.

“We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You… Because by Your Holy Cross, You have redeemed the world.” (The Way of the Cross)

Christian life is a life of choices. It is a moment to moment choice between good and evil. The moral war is waged forever in our hearts.

The saving cross of Christ is compared to the image of the serpent in the Old Testament story which brought cure to Moses’ followers who had been bitten by snakes. The curative gazing upon this image is comparable to the Christian reliance on the cross. It is equivalent to the manifestation of trust and faith in God’s gift of salvation. The crucified Christ is God’s gift to us, a gift that has to be embraced with grateful confidence of faith.

Human freedom is being true to our God. It is acting out the inner principles we share with God. It is following our conscience where our soul is laid bare before our all-knowing God. It makes us respond to the promptings of the Spirit. It is in this context that we assert that obedience is the greatest freedom.

And the grace of God is given to us without our effort. It is not the consequence of our good deeds. On the other hand, our good deeds are the consequence of God’s grace.

We, as Christian believers, have to accept an approach to life that takes into consideration God’s absolute power over us as well as His respect for our human freedom. St. Augustine expresses this balanced approach in these words: “Pray as though everything depends on God. Work as though everything depends on you.”

Our response to God’s gift of salvation is in the realm of human freedom which God absolutely respects. He allows us to choose between salvation and perdition, between good and evil, between life and death. In his goodness, he permits us to decide what to do and what not to do. Heaven and

Philippines wins Best South Africa’s Daryl Country award in Impey won Tour of FIBA World Cup Alberta By Bimbo Manzano

By Yasmin Quintana

South Africa’s Daryl Impey came from behind and surprised everyone when he took the allover win with only a 10-second time bonus that catapulted him past five-day race leader Tom Dumoulin of The Netherlands and Team Giant-Shimano to win the Tour of Alberta, presented by ATB Financial, by a mere one-second after 738 kilometres of racing.

The Philippines celebrated its return to the world championship after 36 years with its first victory in the tournament in 40 years and by winning the Most Valuable Fan Best Country award. Gilas Pilipinas has captured the adulation of fans and media all over the world with their all-heart, all-out play and their rabid fans that almost carried them to the Round of 16. Gilas pushed Croatia, Argentina and Puerto Rico to the limit before losing while they stayed competitive against Greece. They earned a well-deserved victory against Senegal, 81-79, in overtime in their final assignment. Despite the series of heartbreaks, Filipinos and even Spanish fans, who got enamored by the team’s “Puso” (Heart) mantra and style of play, filled the 7,100-seat Palacio Municipal de Deportes in Seville, Spain.

“After everything I’ve gone through, this victory is very rewarding,” said Impey, who had a suspect doping charge dropped only four days before arriving in Alberta last week. “My team did an incredible job getting

me the best position to sprint for the win. This was a very good race. It has become important for us. It’s organized well and well attended by the fans. We look forward to coming back.” For the 23-year-old Dumoulin, it was the third race this year that he lost on the final day. “I knew I couldn’t sprint with him (Impey) and had to rely on someone defeating him today,” he said. “When I saw his hand lifted in victory, I couldn’t believe it.” Dumoulin most recently had been winning the Tour of Belgium and Eneco Tour before being overcome on final day of the race.

Ryan Anderson was in the same boat as Dumoulin, motivated to win the stage in his hometown of Edmonton while also using the time bonus to move into second place overall. Instead, Impey made a bold move to pass Anderson in the final 50 metres and Anderson was forced to ease his sprint near the line to avoid a crash. Right on the floor, there is a poem by Mary Oliver which opened a whole new perception to the scene that inspired the artist called “The Summer Day” it’s about life full of fleeting moments and each should be lived with passion for we do not know lies ahead. The garden comprises of several towering trees and thick flowering undergrowth plants along meandering pathways provide a sense of peaceful and meditative surroundings. The mansion and the

TORONTO, CA, September 10, 2014 – It may have been back to school for students and the September or autumnal equinox of North America is just around the corner, but don’t count out summer completely just yet. The heat from ABS-CBN TFC’s summer event series continues to sizzle with back-to-back live presentations of “It’s Showtime” on September 20 at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto and September 21 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton. The most watched noontime show in the Philippines and globally on TFC, which brought to worldwide consciousness the hilarious, wackiest, undeniably entertaining and distinctly Filipinoflavored contests like Kalokalike, Mini Me, I Am Pogay,That’s My Tomboy, and PINASikat, is bringing the party team to fans in Canada for a guaranteed laugh-a-minute and variety extravaganza. Coming to Canada to entertain the “madlang people” are the immensely popular Anne Curtis, Vice Ganda, Karylle, Vhong Navarro, Billy Crawford, Kuya Kim Atienza, Teddy Corpuz, Jugs Jugueta, Jhong Hilario, Ryan Bang, Coleen Garcia and Eric Tai. The tightly knit cast of “It’s Showtime” before and behind cameras has become beloved to millions of followers.

What began as a search for the country’s most entertaining acts a few years ago turned out to be a hit variety program that launched a thousand trends for Filipinos here and abroad. The show has, in its own way, established itself as its own brand of entertainment thriving on spontaneity and animated conversations. It is more fun in “It’s Showtime” as it keeps churning out popular catchphrases and gimmicks, draws people and barangays or townsfolk together to showcase their talents, and finds thrill and joy in the most mundane situations. The September 20 show is brought to Toronto in partnership with Great Smile Denture Clinic while the September 21 show is brought to Edmonton in partnership with 3J Event Services. TFC and Philippine Airlines are presenting sponsors of both shows in association with Megaworld and Belo Medical Group. As the show’s theme song goes, “This is your show, this is your time, Magpasikat na, It’s Showtime.” For ticket information, please call @ Toronto: 416-4319444 @ Edmonton: 7809387373 or visit https:// www.facebook.com/ itsShowtimena.

Anything extreme that increases fundamentalism is bad. Terrorists exploit Islam to serve a violent political vision. They turn radicalism to terrorism and that should stop.” There’s a jittery feeling that 911 can and will happen again. I think it will too. But as scared as I was when it happen, I am equally scared about how so few people get what 911 actually symbolizes. The repercussions of that morning are still reverberating, and quite honestly I still don’t know where or when it will end. That morning of September 11, 2001 when I sat and watched the Towers fall was for me, one of those moments when history split like what Malala experienced when Pakistan’s First Female Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated. What started as a very ordinary day became a turning point in your life and in the whole world. ExBritish Tony Blair put it best when he said that 911 was a wake-up call for him but also that most people soon “went back to sleep.” If the populace at large refuses to understand what went down on Sept. 11, 2001, and what it means for dealing with Islamic terror then sadly the popular culture is partly to blame for that ignorant state of affairs. The popular culture and those publications or media that cover it, are influential to such a degree that it can change people’s views Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Designate Jim Prentice and the new Philippine Ambassador Petronila Garcia as they start their term should take note of people’s irrationality in politics. In a TED talk by Dr. Michael Huemer, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado, points out that it’s important to solve the problem of irrationality in politics. We’ll find as we examine his arguments, it’s in almost everyone’s personal self interest to continue to be ir-

rational about politics, but it’s against the best interests of society as a whole. Although there’s only a small chance that any one person will influence public policy, if a large number of people are irrational about their political positions, then it’s a virtual certainty that society is going to suffer negative outcomes. He considers this the most serious problem we face today because this is the problem that prevents us from solving other problems since it affects people’s civic engagement and social participation. Gaining insights into irrational motives that affect our personal and work lives is a good place to start in overcoming our irrational tendencies. I remember when I was confronted by an elder regarding my previous editorial. I was told that what I wrote about what happened to the Seniors Picnic (where seniors participants were asked to sign a petition to support Hon. Con. Aguirre and most of them not knowing what it was) is unfair to his side. He said the one who started it are those community leaders who believed and supported Hon. Con. Aguirre. He mentioned about the irrational tendencies of us to blame all our predicaments to the government when not all government officials are bad. Which I answer that we also have that irrational tendencies to believe a government figure even if witnesses and evidences are present to say otherwise. He was surprised but after a while said I never thought about that while nodding his head. We can overcome irrational tendencies, thoughts and fears if we try to get real with ourselves and with everyone—a deeper sense of truth. Recognizing that we have a problem is already 50% towards achieving a solution. Every event in our life and in the world presents an opportunity for us to learn, to change and to grow. Let’s put in mind what N.H. Kleinbaum of Dead Poets Society said, “No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.” To all the students of school year 2015-2016…. Welcome to a new world of learning!

THE UNREACHABLE DREAM

PCOCO, the Political Content Committee of the Congress of Filipinos in Calgary (CFIC) is a group to take charge our political involvement. They are in search for deserving and capable prospected Filipinos to run as candidates in the next provincial election. This is a shot in the dark as no commendable person that they know is willing. It is a challenging commitment that it is not common for anyone to just accept it.

was already something of value. The timing was not right, but someday it will.

However, the search of PCOCO for candidates is not that all dismal. On the contrary, it is getting better. They already have one candidate that has been unanimously voted upon by the CFIC members of the community assembly at their 4th session. The assembly believes that our chance is good.

We have two years to work this out. This is not easy, but it can be done upon absorbing in mind that advancement of our community is riding on it. We need not go far to prove this. We just have to look around and visualize where we are today as compared with other major cultural groups.

That someday is a generation after. It is now. Our growth in population is unprecedented. We now have the needed numbers. We have all the elements necessary to succeed. The lesson is learned. Yes, the dream can be realized; the itch can be scratched, but only if we can funnel ourselves into focus.

It is unexpected that there are a number of referrals from notable people. It could be that we are now a big community where more deserving individuals are at hand. We want to have someone up there and the respond is encouraging. Other cultural communities did it and we could possibly do likewise.

We are the biggest, but we are at the bottom in progress. We are often renting their facilities because our Philippine Community Center is not really a center of anything. It’s kind of an apartment to supposedly accommodate fifty thousand Filipinos. It’s paid up and stays lowly humble to serve as a reminder to illustrate what disunity is doing to us. We shall rightfully behave as Calgarians because Calgary is our city; Albertans because Alberta is our province and above all Canadians because Canada is our country too. It is only fair that like any others, we too shall have a little say in the affairs of government. The dream is not dead, but dreamers are not many anymore. We can still see their faces and feel what they desired when they were around. There was Elro Kintanar, Art Molina, Dr. Dionesio David, Mr. Recafort, Vic Lacuata, Mr. Rosales, Efren Boras, Peter Ulanday, Mr. Salcedo, Mrs. Susana Capulong, Ed Quiloy, Lorenzo Reyes, Tony Bacalso, Romy Calusing, Mr Diaz, Mr & Mrs Roberto Grey, Dr & Mrs Catahan, Rene Dino and more. They were parts of the few who put up the initial footprints of Filipinos in Calgary. They had dreams that someday the Filipino community would be up there amongst the best. Their longing were not much different to what we want today. The political triumph of putting elected Filipinos in Calgary has been an emblematic barometer to signify maturity as a community. It is a valued prize. It was impractical then, but we have all the necessary ingredients to do it now. It is true that we are presently the fastest growing community, but numbers alone is insignificant. We have to do better than just to multiply. We have to cater into ourselves a degree of understanding that it is in togetherness both in purpose and performance that we are respected. Yes, it is a mountain to climb, but it shall be overcome for our need and want are on it. We ride on dreams long enough and now is the time to seek reality. We deserve it too. Let’s put our shared effort into it and prevail.

It took me one hour

The other breed of TFWs (The Fruit Workers) of Calgary

Saskatoon Farm is 15 kilometers away south of Calgary. Our goal of driving there one weekend of August was to enjoy Saskatoon berry and strawberry picking. After paying an entrance fee ($2 per head), we proceeded to the rows of berries picking area. First few minutes were

fun. I stained my lips very bad but satisfied my palate. The ice cream plastic bucket was getting heavy. The rest of my group scattered. We agreed to meet in one spot after one hour. While labouring to fill the bucket I heard chit chatting of women at the other side of the

bushes. Praises were given to one of their Filipina officemates for hard work, initiatives and no sick calls. It took me one hour to fill the plastic ice cream bucket up with Saskatoon berries, and reaffirmed once again that Pinoys are the real TFW (The Fabulous Workers) of Canada.

Did you know? By Ymor H.

1. The population of the Philippines is now more than 100 millions. 2. There are five Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in August. Check it out. 3. The average cost to raise a child up to 18 years old in America is around $ 245,340.00. (for food, housing, childcare and education, and other child rearing expenses) Source: USDA 4. Vote buying is not only in the Philippines. Yes, in this province, too, for only $10.00 (no GST)! Hopia, mani, balut and PC (Pop Corn). Ask our esteemed Pinoy vendors! 5. The following are the pressing problems in the world today: ISIS, Ebola, Syria, Ukraine, Boko Haram, Hamas vs. Israel, flooding, typhoon, hurricane, earthquakes, kami-kami, kayo-kayo, sila-sila at etc.

Few years back I still remember this man in his mid 40’s sharing his unforgettable experience. His last visit to a family dentist was when he was five. His baby tooth had to be extracted. It took him decades before his next appointment. If not for the recurring severe pain impacting his diet and the discomfort of losing sleep, he would have not bothered booking an appointment. The tooth may look healthy outside but inside it was rotten. No amount of bubble gum, brushing, polishing, flossing and gargling were needed to cover the stink it created, and other complications like tartar build up, gingivitis, gum lesion and others. His dentist told him that cap, crown and filling were just temporal. The lesson implied was his complacency to take care of his teeth was badly affecting his well being. His problem could have been avoided

by a regular dental check up and cleaning. Now that the old rotten tooth was gone, his new denture was as good and useful as the rest of the teeth. He’s feeling great about his diet, a good night sleep and confidence to talk to anybody. No worries about stinking breath. Complications were minimized. In 2016 the province will elect a party who will govern Albertans. Political parties are starting to strategize their approach to ethnic groups. The governing party has elected its new leader. The new and unelected premier had a list of promises. He spoke hope and renewal. On the other hand the opposition parties are doing their main mandate – that is to oppose or to make the government to account. Complacency develops people who are like gingivitis, tartar and gum lesions. These are people who are very

much aligned with rotten tooth. Their preference is status quo. Change brings pain and imbalance to their existence. The well being of this great Alberta will be at stake. Our community is the fastest growing ethnic group in the province. Our collective influence and voice are being heard and getting louder. Before committing our suffrage we need regular check up and cleaning. We need to uphold transparency, honesty and integrity. We are not in Manila (littered with pork barrels). We are in Alberta (littered with oil barrels). We need to be active participants in electing the government that will serve us with humility, dignity and integrity. Be informed. Be vigilant. Engage in political dialogue. Be the Pinoy-Albertans we ought to be – united, smart, unmoved by platitudes, well informed and politically enlightened.

Time well spent! By Ymor H.

My wife and I were recipients of a generous gift (tickets) from Diaryo Filipino. Thanks DF! The concert, “Music for all Ages”, held at Century

Casino last Sept. 6 was both refreshing and entertaining. We were refreshed and mellowed by the songs of our yesteryears. The featured

performers, Mike Hanopol and Lolita Carbon have awakened our hibernating memory of the past. It was very nostalgic.

“Lahat ng bagay na narito sa Lupa Biyayang galing sa Diyos kahit nong ika’y wala pa Ingatan natin at ‘wag nang sirain pa Pagkat pag Kanyang binawi, tayo’y mawawala na It was also true that around us in this wealthy province many youth are, indeed, Jeproks. Laki sa layaw, Jeproks. Oh, yeah laki sa laway...Jeproks... With due respect and

appreciation to our local talents, we were also impressed by their musical talents. Our dessert for the night was Juan Manila. His fabulous, down to earth

and unscripted stage presence has kept us up long in the night laughing. It was a time well spent. Kudos to the promoter.

Trust can take years to build, but only a second to break.

Magagawa mong mag bagong buhay; kapag ginusto, maraming paraan. Ano man ang maging rason

at nakokonsensiya.

Sherry

Nagmamahal, Madame KC
