Editor’s note • May 2015

Dreading the Suit I remember being 5 years old wearing my red bikini and splashing around in my kiddie pool. My appearance was the furthest thing from my mind. Instead I was basking in the sunshine, enjoying the feeling of the water on my skin and hoping the day would never end. Flash forward 40 years. I’m the woman who sits by the pool in full make-up, hair done wearing a flowy sundress. The last time that I wore a swimsuit was when I was 5 years old. As I got older I became more conscious of my body. I could no longer ignore the softness around my middle and the spread of my thighs. When I was in high school I weighed a slight 75 pounds yet I thought I was huge. My teenage self would have “just died” at the thought of wearing a swimsuit. Like many women over 40 I dread the thought of having to put on a swimsuit. Along with having to deal with the usual “unhappy spots” I have to deal with what 45 years in a wheelchair has done to my body. My torso has been shortened as a result of spinal surgery. I also carry weight around my waist, which refuses to go away despite my dedication to dieting and proper nutrition. I do not have a bikini body. Along with that people stare. It doesn’t bother me as we are all drawn to looking at someone who is different than us. I like to give them something worth staring at which is why I always have on full make-up and I chose my clothes and accessories with great care. Next year my husband and I plan to return to Mexico. This time I feel compelled to go into the ocean and be free. This will require a swimsuit, as I’m sure a flowy sundress will not do the trick. I will bravely put on one of those cute retro- style swim dresses. Not only that I will be proud of my body and myself. I will do my best to ignore that roll on my stomach that keeps taunting me. I will still wear full make up and accessorize with care. People may stare, but I will be sure to make it worth their while. During my research for our swimsuits spread, I became inspired. Inspired to wear something that before I would never dare. I hope this inspires you as well to be your happiest and freest self. b Laurie Slipchuk Young Editor

Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. {LIFE IS JUST A PHASE}

Beauty isn’t skin deep Hey psst girlfriend! You are not really going to wear that, are you? Your butt is too big and there is nothing delicious about that muffin top. Not to mention the sun bouncing off those stretch marks just might blind someone. Your best bathing suit days are long gone my friend. Imagine if things we said about ourselves in our heads we actually said out loud to another person. Imagine if you said to your mother, sister, friend or coworker: “OMG you are too fat and out of shape to wear that.” You just wouldn’t do it, would you? It would be unkind. That certainly doesn’t stop us from talking to ourselves in ways that we would never, ever say to another person. On a daily basis we mutter nasty things under

our breath. Lots of what we say has to do with our appearance, but we don’t limit ourselves to that. Our inner critic has all kinds of negative comments about how smart, capable, loveable and even worthy we are. Whether we admit it or not, most women do not think kindly about their bodies. Sure we all support campaigns that encourage women to embrace their physical self but when we are alone with the mirror, we criticize, judge, berate and mock various body parts: too big, too small, too flat, too round, too long, too short. Here’s the interesting part. As we age, our belief that others are judging us based on our appearance declines. That may be in large part because by the time women are in their 50’s, they worry much less about what other people think. Perhaps it’s not that others have stopped judging us as it is that we care less if they are. That sounds great but we haven’t stopped judging ourselves or worrying

about our appearance. At least 85% of women across all age groups are dissatisfied with at least one body part, with the midsection topping the list. That probably accounts for the daily ritual of squeezing ourselves into our Spanx just so our butts are lifted and our stomachs are flat. It’s not just a young women’s game. Half of women over 55 worry regularly about what their bodies look like. There’s a difference between recognizing you might want to change something, like get in better shape, and using the current state of your body as a stick to beat yourself with. Just like there is a constructive way to share your opinion with others, there is always a kinder way to speak to yourself. Your body wants what you want. It wants to be strong and healthy. It is already beautiful as is. Start by practicing gratitude for the body you have. Look in the mirror with love in your heart.

This is the body that allows you to experience the world. This is the body you would give anything to get back if illness took it away. Catch yourself making those snide comments about how you look and take a breath. Replace them with words of appreciation. If you want to make some changes, go ahead. Simply work with your body in a kind and loving way. Talk to your body in the way you would your dearest friend: “You can do this. You are strong. You are a work in progress.” We like to say that beauty is only skin deep. That’s not true. Beauty is way beyond that. It’s all about being comfortable in your skin. {SIPS ‘N TIPS}

Days of Wine and Roses Gardening is wonderful, hard work. Hard work deserves a reward. It may be a cold beer for you, but it’s most definitely a refreshing glass of wine for me! Here in Edmonton, the gardening season officially starts on Victoria Day weekend in May. I’m thinking the way things are warming up quickly this year, maybe it will actually be earlier? We are usually assured that the frost is out of the ground by Victoria Day so we can jump right into the short summer growing time. Garden centres, and greenhouses are abuzz with people starved of greenery and flowers and plants in general after the long, cold winter. When I plan a weekend of working outside in the garden, I prioritize my work by first selecting and purchasing my wines on Thursday or Friday. Gardening wines that I choose are generally priced under $25.00 so that I don’t compromise my bedding plant budget. As soon as I get

home, I place the wines in the fridge to chill. Gardening season wines come in many colours, styles and tastes. From brisk and bracing Sauvignon Blancs to slightly fruitier Pinot Grigios right up to delicately sweet Moscatos . I also love to sip a bright, pale pink Rose wine in the garden after a back-breaking day of digging weeds. France, Spain and Canada produce lovely drier style Roses, while sweeter California White Zinfandels or Italian Moscatos are preferred by some. None of these choices are high in alcohol, and are enjoyed cold. Before heading to the Garden Centre on Saturday morning, I make sure I drink a large, eye opening café latte. I want to be completely alert for selecting the best baby herbs, colourful bedding plants, flowering shrubs, tomato plants, trailers for hanging pots, roses, and bags and bags of good, rich earth. Oh! and a funky new pair of garden gloves too!

Two Easy Strategies to Becoming

Smarter & Happier How many times have you heard “Let’s keep emotions out of this” “Don’t be so emotional….” or how about “Leave your emotional baggage at the door….” ? Emotions are part of us. They make us human. Without emotions we would all be robots, and who wants to be a robot? Emotions are important and can save our lives. Like the flight or fight response, it is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack, or threat to survival. Emotions are important, but they can get the best of us. Just like in the story from the last blog. The airport flight cancellation and emotions were through the roof. Trying to keep a level head can be difficult. At the wonderful stage of life we are in, throw in a hot flash or “tropical moment” as they are also affectionately called, and now you’re dealing with that on top of it all. It’s easy to let our emotions run rampant. There are a few strategies to help us control them and actually learn something about our selves and the world around us. We can become smarter about our emotions and happier over all!

Strategy #1 Notice emotions. Just accept emotions are a part of life and us. We all have them, of course, barring any emotional feelings that may require consultations or a physicians support. Our emotions are there, just like our thoughts. Make peace, acknowledge and honor them. Avoid placing them into a category of “good or bad” just acknowledge that they are there. Strategy #2 Identify and define emotions. Really get to know them. They are more than… I feel good. I am angry. I feel OK. I feel happy. How about really digging deeper and understanding them, just like when we are asked to describe our favorite restaurant or our last vacation. We can go into great detail about it, but when we are asked how we are feeling, it is down to a word or two. Make a list of emotions that you can use instead of the word happy -- that is just too generic.

How about cheerful, delighted, peaceful, pleasant, glad, elated, thrilled, upbeat, joyful, jolly, chipper, or jubilant. The list can go on and on. Search on a website for synonyms! Take each word and really analyze how that word can be used to describe your emotions or how you are feeling at any given moment. Keep that list handy. Refer to it often and when someone asks “How are you today.” Take a moment to really think and answer with one of your new words. See the reaction on their face when you answer with something other than good, happy or fine.

Then simply tell them what I would like them to do in the future, like this….. “I would just like to be acknowledged and thanked for my hard work.” There. Simple. X.Y.Z.

The next word to find the correct word for is angry. Are we annoyed, enraged, exasperated, offended, irritated, or resentful? Digging deep why we are angry will help determine the root cause as well, and then we may be able to anticipate the emotion, even thwarting it if we can and avoid the emotion from overwhelming us. I had an experience recently where I was “angry”. I was really angry and had a conversation with the other person before I understood what my anger was really all about, I didn’t take the time to understand my emotion.

I feel X when you Y what I would like is Z.

The conversation did not go well. In reflection, I understand now that I wasn’t really angry or mad. What I really was, was hurt and I felt like I wasn’t appreciated and was being taken advantage of.

So, instead of saying to the other person, “I am mad at you”, like I did. I should have said. “I feel like I wasn’t being appreciated. When you didn’t say thank you or acknowledge what I did for you.”

Finding the perfect word to describe your feelings can be a huge step in discovering your emotions and starting to use them with intelligence. Emotions are our guide to helping us be more successful and happy…. Or should I say elated/thrilled/joyous…..fill in the blank with your favorite happy emotion! Go Girl This month, you are given tips for snacks and meals that offer energy to keep you going. Enjoy the bonus recipes! Tip 1 ~ Seedy and Nutty Jump-start the day with Chia Seed Pudding or Hot Quinoa Cereal. Pack power in a pouch with a handful of nuts mixed with dried berries. Enjoy nutrition in a sprinkle of hemp or flax seed over a lunch salad. Cashews or almonds in your stir-fries at supper adds extra good fat and protein. Chia Seed Pudding Yield: 1 serving • 1/3 cup chia seeds (white or black) • 1 ½ cups non-dairy or regular milk • 1 to 2 tbsp maple syrup • ½ tsp vanilla Combine all in a jar. Cover with lid. Shake vigorously! Chill for about an hour. Then shake again. Chill for 4 hours or overnight. Top with nuts, coconut flakes, and / or fruit. For chocolate flavor, add 1 to 2 tbsp raw cacao powder and increase liquid by same amount. Experiment with different fruits for unique taste.

Tomato Vinaigrette • 1 large Roma tomato • 1 to 2 sundried tomatoes (soaked for 30 min in warm water, prior to blending) • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 scallion • 1 teaspoon basil • 1 teaspoon oregano • 1/8 cup fresh parsley, chopped • 1/8 cup fresh cilantro • 2 tablespoon dark balsamic vinegar • Sea salt to taste • Black pepper to taste Blend well using a mini-blender.

Lime Dressing • 2 limes, juiced • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin • 1 teaspoon raw apple cider vinegar • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil • Sea salt, black pepper

2 crushed garlic cloves

1T dried parsley

2 T fresh lemon juice

2 ripe avocados, peeled and seeded

½ cup Greek yogurt

1 clove garlic, minced

1 T dried basil Mineral salt, freshly ground black pepper to taste 3 T chopped fresh cilantro 1 T finely chopped seeded jalapeño pepper

1/4 tsp ground cumin

2 T fresh lime juice

Mineral salt, freshly ground black pepper to taste

Create dips ready for you to roll by using your food processor or blender. So versatile, healthy, and fast. Add more vegetables and/or rice crackers in a bag, and you have a great snack or a wonderful lunch. Here are some favorites:

Bathing Suits for Large Chests What to look for: Underwire is key, but wide or adjustable straps, boning, seamed cups, and sturdy linings help lift the chest, too. Other ancillary support features, like high necklines, full coverage at the armholes, or halters with wide bands under the breasts, also help. What to avoid: Skimpy styles that gape open or lack structure, like triangle tops. CJ Blouson Tankini Style Lounge Swimwear

Bathing Suits for Full Hips and Thighs What to look for: A suit with eye-catching details above the waist - a pop of color, a deep neckline, hardware- to lure attention to your upper half. Down below, opt for an arched leg line that hits about an inch south of the hip bone. A skirted bottom also hides hips. An A-line cut, a slit, or ruched sides keep the look modern. What to avoid: Boy shorts, one-pieces with side cutouts, and bottoms with embellishments, especially ring hardware (which can pinch the skin). Bathing Suits for a Tummy What to look for: Designs that skim over the middle (think A-line tankinis) or suits that have ruched or textured fabric or built-in control panels to suck in an ample midsection. Choose styles with high waistbands that are shirred or folded to give you more coverage. What to avoid: Tight-fitting tankinis, belt detailing, and low-rise or string bottoms. Do It Afraid As we enter into gardening season we all know that as much as we wish it was possible, you never get rid of weeds, do you? It’s the same with fear. If you plant your life’s dream in soil that has been chocked out by weeds, then the dream can’t possibly grow. The weeds are fear. Fear can choke out every good seed, if you let it. It’s impossible not to have fear – but we’ve got to learn to befriend it so we honour its presence but kick it out of the driver’s seat. In September of last year I was absolutely paralyzed by fear. In the springtime my sixteen-year career came to an end and I had taken the summer off to do my own self-inventory, to discover what was next for me. My stay-at-home husband and I had agreed that by September I would be working again but we would enjoy the summer as a family. We had an amazing summer. And then September came and I still wasn’t working.

I panicked. I stopped sleeping. I had trouble breathing. I was anxious. I was worried. I was scared. I had financial stress. I had worthiness issues. The voice in my head was shouting at me “YOU ARE A FAILURE”. And after a few days of this, I breathed and I did what I’m about to tell you to do. I hit my internal pause button. We all have one. It’s our ability to be aware of our emotional state and when it’s not in an empowering place to pause and breathe deeply. I shifted my focus back to my dreams, I did have a plan and it was a good one. It was taking longer than I may have wanted and it was scary, but it was what I would love. And then I asked myself a very powerful question that I encourage you to write down and use often. “What if it all worked out?” This question will shift your attention from the problem to the solution, and with your attention on the solution you

will have access to a more empowering answers. Remember, the life you want is just outside of your comfort zone. This is where the magic happens. If we decide to step into our greatness, fear will be a constant companion and our level of success is directly proportional to our ability to tolerate discomfort; our ability to befriend fear. So next time you are uncomfortable, or maybe even paralyzed by fear; hit your pause button, breathe and then celebrate. Fear is showing up because you are about to grow, you are about to step into your greatness. Three Benefits to Facing Your Fears!

When I recently Googled the top 10 fears that are common to most people, there were three in particular that I have had the great fortune to face with in my lifetime. [Visit selfhelpcollective.com for the full list.]

I’m a success at failing! Why do I say that? It’s partly because I not only learned the most from my failures, but they did seed the ground for future successes. Best of all, I survived to try, yet again!

1. Fear of Failure

Now those who know me have watched me often enough in front of an audience to know that talking at the front of the room does not hold much fear for me. In most cases, that is true. However, there was one kind of stage performance that fascinated and terrified me equally. It was the role of comedian.

It may have been a much bigger fear when I was growing up, but I guess I’ve tried and failed often enough in my life that the fear doesn’t have the same impact. Failed businesses, failed marriages, and bankruptcies have all been part of my journey. As I was moving through the intense emotions that were triggered, each of them caused prolonged moments of reflection. In an odd kind of way, I guess

What could possibly be worse than trying to make people laugh out loud, yet having them sit there stony-faced despite your best efforts?

One particular nasty failure in that arena sent me searching for answers to the puzzle that is standup comedy. Five weeks of lessons and one heart-stopping yet successful appearance at the local comedy club had me experiencing a victory stronger than any previous one. The benefit – it significantly reduced my level of fear about anything else that might come my way. 3. Fear of Death Now that fear has certainly kept me from jumping out of perfectly good airplanes or stopped me from allowing anyone to attach bungee cords to my feet. However, death can surface unannounced. Death got up close and personal in 1963 when my grandfather died, in 1967 when my mother and three other family members died within months of each other, and in 1982, when my youngest brother died. During those years, most of my fear was replaced by numbness – the worst

had happened - what more could possibly happen? But it was my near-death experience in 2007 and the subsequent trip to the “other side” that removed any fear of death. I might still fear pain, suffering, and slowly dying; but now that I know that we are, indeed, eternal beings, I view death as simply a transition from one form of life to another-there is really nothing to fear. Life provides many opportunities to face every kind of fear that exists for us. When we choose to stand rather than run, and face whatever fear is in front of us, we grow and fear shrinks. In what ways do you prefer to give back or pay it forward? Giving back or paying it forward comes back to you ten-fold in some way or another. I volunteer with a local woman’s charity “Suit Yourself Wardrobe for Women”. I have been fortunate in my life to have had a successful career and truly believe that all women are deserving of the opportunity. I am sharing my skills/talents as the Treasurer on the Board of Directors. My “Suit Yourself” family has given me so much more than words can say. I am also member of, new to Edmonton, “100 Women Who Care Edmonton”. It has been very heart-warming to be part of this organization knowing that we are reaching out to local charities. When life knocks you down, what lifts you up?

And finally, do not wait until you are 50 to become Fabulous! I want you all to believe that at 50 you will be even more Fabulous than you are now! What is it in nature that feeds your soul? The miracle of nature itself! I spent far too long under a dark cloud that I did not even have the energy to notice nature around me. When I blew up that cloud, I started to see buds blooming, hear birds sing, animals and children playing, laughter all around. I do my best thinking walking with my dog, MJ through the river valley. I love experiencing the four seasons in nature. The changes each season give me new energy and focus. What makes you laugh? Me! It keep me sane! b

Life is a gift even with its ups and downs. I am grateful each and every day for the strength and courage to move forward. I cannot control everything around me but I can control how I handle it. 1/2 tsp (2 ml) each dried oregano leaves, salt and pepper

2 cups (500 ml) cauliflower florets

Servings: 4

1 red pepper, chopped

Ingredients:

1 each onion and carrot, sliced

1 pkg (340 g) Catelli® Healthy Harvest® Ancient Grains Rotini

2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cubed

3 tbsp (45 ml) olive oil

1/2 cup (125 ml) each sodium-reduced chicken broth and peas

4 cloves garlic, minced

Instructions:

Cook for 2 minutes.

1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

Add chicken to bowl, coat with leftover mixture. Transfer chicken to separate baking sheet. Roast for 30 minutes.

• Substitute broccoli for the cauliflower, if preferred.

3. Cook rotini according to package directions; drain well. Return to saucepan with broth, peas, chicken, vegetables, reserved oil mixture and vinegar.

Shrivelling Vaginas? I want to talk about our vaginas. Yes. Our vaginas, and our bladders for that matter. If you have entered menopause they might be shrivelling and sagging. This is a horrifying thought for any women, and the reality for over 50 per cent of all women within three to ten years of entering menopause. The condition is referred to as Vaginal Atrophy (VA), Urogenital Atrophy (UGA), Atrophic Vaginitis and Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). VA is where the vaginal walls become thin, fragile and inflamed due to a reduction of estrogen. The sad thing about this condition is not the condition itself, because it is quite treatable; the sad thing, is that so few women know about it. Often feeling alone in their plight, women all over the world suffer needlessly in silence, too embarrassed to discuss their symptoms. Well, I for one would like to help change this situation. As a nurse and a women in pari-menopause running Fabulous@50 Calgary, I have a vested interested in women’s health issues. A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of interviewing several wonderful women regarding this condition, and learned more than I had anticipated. The women were part of an initiative to increase awareness of VA. They are part of The Dedicated Influencers on Vagina Atrophy (DiVA) Circle and appeared at the Calgary Woman’s Show with Dr. Marla Shapiro. Their message was well received by the audience: Let’s Start Talking VA www. starttalkingva.ca The first 2 women I interviewed were medical doctors with a specialty in Women’s Health. (Please see bios below)

My first interview was with Dr. Vivien Brown. I was immediately struck by her knowledge, her passion for women’s health issues and her ability to communicate her message so clearly. Our conversation lasted much longer than originally planned; indeed I would have happily engaged in this conversation for even longer. I was learning so much as both a woman and a nurse. Dr. Brown shared with me the common symptoms women suffer from, including the physical, emotional and relational impact this condition can have. We discussed the reasons this happens to our bodies and the treatments that are available. Most importantly, we discussed the barriers that block women from seeking support and what is needed to remove these barriers. Most of us understand the basics of menopause but lack depth o f understanding of what really goes on within our bodies. There is such a myriad of symptoms that can occur so that it is hard to know what is normal, what is not; what is treatable and what is not. Most people associate menopause with hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats and our periods getting fewer and farther between until they eventually stop altogether. We know that these symptoms will eventually pass. We laugh and joke about these symptoms and we openly discuss them.

But… do we talk openly about our vaginas… and what happens below the belt once we enter menopause? No! Not typically. There seems to be a conspiracy of silence when it comes to talking about something as intimate as our vaginas and genital areas. Most of us rarely even use the word vagina. If you are like most women you likely have a nick name for this part of your body. Lady parts, Vjay jay, hoohoo and the list goes on. Even with a nick name, most are too embarrassed to discuss the topic, even with their doctors. But what if they are giving you grief? Burning, Itching, painful sex, lack of lubrication? Are you suffering in silences and embarrassment? These are not topics casually brought up in conversation. Unless, of course, you have been hanging around me for the past several weeks. I somehow find a way to bring up the conversation no matter what the situation. Vaginas have been a taboo topic for far too long. Their health and functioning is part of our overall health functioning. Therefore let’s chat about vaginas shall we? As we enter menopause, our hormones fluctuate and decrease as they are no longer needed to trigger ovulation and menstruation. During the fluctuation period (pari-menopause) we might experience those common symptoms of hot flashes, sleep disturbances, night sweats and mood swings. Once we are in menopause and hormones stabilize, our estrogen is significantly lower than what it is as a young woman. Vaginas and the back wall of the bladder are dependant on estrogen, so once we experience lower levels of estrogen, the functioning of these organs can change. As a result, we may develop symptoms such as urgency (needing to pee now), frequency (peeing often) and dribbling, especially during laughter. These symptoms are often

misinterpreted as bladder infections. Our vaginas can also suffer. With lowered estrogen levels, vaginas and genital area start to thin; loose their elasticity; become dry and easily inflamed. The symptoms experienced are burning, itching, dryness, irritation and pain during intercourse. These symptoms are often misinterpreted as yeast infections. As you can see, a lot of misinterpretation can lead to improper treatment or lack of effective treatment altogether. When interviewing Dr. Mangat, she stressed that VA is under recognized and under treated.

The most important step a woman can take is to be proactive in initiating the conversation, both with her doctor and her partner. VA does not just affect the woman, it also impacts her partner. Often when a woman experiences pain during sex she does not let her partner know, she simply starts to pull away and avoids sex. She may feel less appealing and her overall self esteem can be at risk. Her partner then may feel rejected and their self esteem can also be affected. It is easy to see how this is a downward cycle which decreases overall intimacy and satisfaction within a relationship. Dr. Brown cited The CLOSER survey (CLarifying vaginal atrophy’s impact On SEx and Relationships) survey, in which thousands of couples were involved. The survey aimed to determine the emotional and physical impact of vaginal atrophy on postmenopausal women and their partners. Celebrating baby boomer women • 31


The conclusion: Vaginal discomfort impairs quality of life in postmenopausal women and their partners. It is time to start the conversation with: your partner, your health care provider and other women. Both doctors confirmed that the first step in getting proper treatment is to get properly assessed. Your health care provider will ask many questions and can do an internal exam to see if you are showing physical signs of VA. Now that the recommendation for PAP smears is for once each 3 years (if your PAPs have been normal), it is vital that you still discuss any vaginal issues with your doctor during your annual check up. I mentioned the conspiracy of silence earlier. Here is how it can play out: A woman is too embarrassed to mention painful sex to her doctor. Meanwhile the doctor expects the patient to mention any issues. The woman then assumes that, since the doctor didn’t say anything, there is nothing to be done. And the science continues. Dr. Brown lectures at continuing education for doctors to help improve their proactive questioning skills. We women must do our part in being our own best advocates and proactively speak up. SPEAK UP

Speaking up is the message from both Joan and Donna; two vibrant women who once suffered so badly from their symptoms that they each had little to no quality of life left. Joan had entered menopause early and, by the time some of us start the process, she was unknowingly suffering severely from VA. She had all the symptoms of burning, itching and irritation. She shared that, for years, she had played the blame game. “It must be the chlorine in the pool irritating me”. So she stopped swimming. “It must be riding

my bike that is an issue”. She stopped cycling. Sex was painful, so that dropped off too. She felt she had little quality of life. Once she was properly diagnosed and treated, her life dramatically changed. She is now vibrantly enjoying ALL aspects of her life again, she told me with a wink and a smile. She happily plays ambassador to increase awareness and help other women know they are not alone. Donna shared a similar story of suffering from VA without knowing. She told me that she blamed her symptoms on external factors irritating her. She suffered frequently from UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections). Neither her nor her doctor initially suspected VA since she was on HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy, which is taken orally). They did not realize that HRT does not effectively treat VA. VA is best treated locally with LET (Local Estrogen Therapy). It was a pharmaceutical friend who helped Donna figure out what she needed to do. Armed with her new education, she returned to speak with her doctor. Together, the two of them figured out the best course of treatment for her. She too was amazed at how well she responded to treatment. She happily says she has not had a UTI since starting treatment. Donna is single but stresses that it is still vital for all women to care for their vaginal and bladder health, regardless of their relationship status. Her biggest lesson was that HRT does not fix VA. TREATMENT

So what is LET all about? Currently the best practice for treating VA is Local Estrogen Therapy (LET). Recently updated guidelines from The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) continue to recommend low-dose local (vaginal) estrogen therapy for the effective treatment of VA. Trestment options include a vaginal tablet, cream or a ring that is inserted every three months.

Now Ladies… it’s time for your call to action: Be your own best advocate. Be proactive with your health. Attend a seminar on women’s health and menopause. Help others along the way by sharing your stories of success. Let’s Talk about Vagina’s During Menopause. Both doctors stressed that the treatment has been deemed very effective and safe. The estrogen is a very low dose and studies show that the estrogen is taken up by the estrogen receptors of the vagina and bladder and that it does not enter the blood stream. They stressed that it is very different than taking estrogen orally as in HRT. There is a variety of products on the market, so it is important for you to educate yourself and discuss the options with your health care provider. Each woman is a unique person so choice of treatment will vary. At the end of each interview I requested the top three points they wished to convey to women about VA and related issues. There were common themes, so here is a summary of what I learned: • Communication: Start the conversation with your partner, health care providers and other women. • Education and Awareness: Educate yourself regarding symptoms and available treatments. • Watch for symptoms: Burning, itching, irritation, inflammation and pain during intercourse, UTIs, bladder control issues. • Seek Professional Assessment: Do not make assumptions as to cause of symptoms. Get a proper examination from a health care provider. • Treatment: Studies show that LET is effective and safe. LET and HRT treat different issues and can be used together. • VA Worsens: Unlike other menopausal symptoms, VA does not go away; it worsens with time. It is treatable at any stage and any age. Degree of recovery will vary. • Follow Up: Treatments can take time to be effective.
