Shadowland Stages: “In the Continuum” and “The Lifespan of a Fact”

The Studio: In The Continuum In the Continuum by Danai Gurira and Nikkole Salter dramatizes the devastating impact of AIDS on African and African-American women with two actresses portraying dozens of roles in this captivating story of parallel lives.

Living worlds apart in South Central Los Angeles and Harare, Zimbabwe, two young women (portrayed by Kayla Bennett and Omolade Way) experience a kaleidoscopic weekend of darkly comic, life-altering revelations.

Directed by Jamie Patton, In the Continuum runs through October 2 in The Studio at Shadowland Stages, 14 Market Street, Ellenville. Tickets: www.shadowlandstages.org or phone 845-647-5511.

MainStage: The Lifespan of a Fact The Lifespan of a Fact by Jeremy

Kareken, David Murrell and Gordon Farrell based on the book by John D’Agata and Jim Fingal, follows Jim Fingal, as a fresh-out-of-Harvard fact checker for a sinking literary magazine.

When his editor charges him with the assignment of checking an article by a prominent literary powerhouse, John D’Agata, the magazine hopes this is the article that will change their fortunes. When not everything checks out, Fingal and D’Agata go head to head as hard facts battle against emotional truths in a highstakes and hilarious verbal showdown.

Jeremy Kareken’s plays have been performed around the country and internationally. A lifetime member of The Actors Studio, Jeremy occasionally acts, and for 18 years served as the researcher for Bravo TV’s Inside the Actors Studio

David Murrell has written a sea chest’s worth of TV, film treatments and spec scripts. In 2019, the Outer Critics Circle co-awarded David its John Gassner Playwrighting Award for The Lifespan of a Fact

Gordon Farrell worked with major Hollywood studios, initially as a story analyst for Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures, and eventually as a screenwriter. He is the author of

The Power of the Playwright’s Vision, published by Heinemann Press in 2001. It has been translated internationally and has become a standard playwrighting text at colleges and universities in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Featured in the cast are two Shadowland favorites and one newcomer.

Steve Brady may be remembered for his versatility and booming voice in plays such as Papermaker (2018), Noises Off (2017), Bill W. & Dr. Bob (2013), The Dangers of Electric Lighting as George Westinghouse (2013), The Ladies Man, (2011), The Seafarer (2011) and Yankee Tavern (2010).

Kathy McCafferty is known for her charismatic performances and adeptness in both dramas and comedies such as The Mystery of Love & Sex (2018), Bang Bang! (2018), Miracle on South Division Street (2016), Falling (2014,) Boeing Boeing (2013) Love/Sick (2013) and Almost Maine (2009).

Actor, singer, dancer, and gymnast Logan Marks was born and raised just outside of Boston. He grew up doing gymnastics, visual art, and soccer. It wasn’t until the end of middle school when he discovered his love of theater.

Logan played Mark Cohen in

RENT for its 20th Anniversary National and International Tour from 2018-2019. He performed the role over 300 times.

The play is directed by Shadowland Stages’ Artistic Director Brendan Burke.

The Lifespan of a Fact runs from October 7 to 23 at The MainStage at Shadowland Stages, 157 Canal Street, Ellenville.

The First Saturday matinee on October 8 at 2:00pm is a ‘vaxxed and masked’ performance.

In Memoriam: Sandra R. Faland Spitzer

July 20, 1947 - September 9, 2022

Local artist Sandra “Sandy” Faland

Spitzer passed away after a long illness on September 9, 2022. Her smiling face and artistic enthusiasm will be missed by the local arts community.

Our hearts go out to her husband Russell, her family and friends. She left the world a legacy of exquisite artworks.

Herewith are some of Sandy’s musings about art, reprinted from previous issues of CANVAS:

May, 2012 CANVAS:

“Art opens up so many possibilities; like a new journey or a distant memory,” says Sandy. Her artistic ability was noticed at an early age, and she was honored to paint backdrops for performances at Bay Ridge High School in Brooklyn.

February, 2013 CANVAS:

Spitzer studied painting in Europe, capturing the Norwegian landscape for many years, where she could often

be found painting on the side of the road, capturing the majestic mountains, lakes and falls of the Norwegian Fjords. Spitzer calls the Norwegian landscape a “smorgasbord of scenic delights”.

December 2014, CANVAS: “Norway, Sweden, Greece, Italy, France, Japan, China... my travels have influenced how I view art, and they have helped me understand the various forms.”

March 2014, CANVAS:

Spitzer’s heart always gravitated to open spaces and the country landscape. Her paintings capture natural beauty along with horses, cows, farm animals, and sunsets that capture beautiful pink tones and the beautiful mountains that surround us. “Art is food for the soul...it takes us to a good place,” she says.

Thank you for sharing yourself with us, Sandy. You were a gift.

Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious young woman to deadly sniper - a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death.

Based on a true story, historical fiction writer Kate Quinn’s latest book, The Diamond Eye, offers an unforgettable World War II tale of a quiet bookworm

who becomes history’s deadliest female sniper.

Quinn is the author of several New York Times bestsellers, including The Alice Network, The Huntress, and The Rose Code

An energy therapist and a retired teacher, the confluence of Lehman’s energy work and art work gave her the realization that she was “painting energy” - not light as do the impressionists, but “energy” as the means and the subject.

A painting major at the University

of Michigan, Lehman studied drawing and lithography with David Ben Shaul in Jerusalem. She is graduate of and former teacher at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. She lives in Warwick, and has shown her work in NYC, Mississippi, Michigan, Florida, Mexico, Israel and locally.

If you can’t make the reception, see the show Saturdays & Sundays, 1:00pm4:00pm, October 1-30 at Amity Gallery, 110 Newport Bridge Road, Warwick.

Ellenville’s Music on Market: Eastern European Folk Music & A String Duo

Music Institute of Sullivan & Ulster (MISU) and its Music On Market (MoM) 2022-2023 concert series continues with MISU’s informal Coffeehouse Concerts and a Cecily Fortescue Memorial Concert Madárka (“little bird” in Hungarian) plays the traditional music you would have heard in the villages of Eastern Europe many years ago, slightly updated. Drawing from the rich history of Klezmer, Romany, Balkan, Romanian and Russian folk music, they take listeners on a lively journey across borders and centuries.

Their repertoire is flexible and diverse, encompassing high energy music perfect for circle dancing, Yiddish love ballads, Rom murder ballads, Romanian worker’s songs mixed with Appalachian fiddle, standards and bizarre old tunes you are unlikely to hear anywhere else.

Madarka performs for the October 1, 7:30pm coffeehouse at MISU.

Cecily Fortescue was a beloved and ubiquitous presence in Sullivan County and the Upper Delaware Valley, and so were the elegant and graceful pots and vases she created. She also hosted a radio program on WJFF Radio (see page 27), and often performed on her viola. The Catskill Art Society named a gallery

in her honor, and her viola instructor, MISU’s Anastasia Solberg, honors her with memorial concerts.

For the upcoming concert, two members of the Trio Soli-Tude, Solberg (viola) and David Fiedler (violin), will perform a variety of duos and solos by Mozart, Handel-Halvorson, Villa-Lobos, Violeta Dinescu and Dorothee Schabert.

Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) was the single most significant creative figure

Greenwood Lake Solo: Mitchell Saler

in 20th-century Brazilian art music. He has become the best-known South American composer of all time.

Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) was a celebrated violinist, conductor and composer who is remembered today primarily for his brilliant “extrapolation” of Handel’s Passacaglia for a daring ensemble of two stringed instruments.

Violeta Dinescu (b.1953) is a Romanian composer, pianist and professor, living

in Germany since 1982. This prolific composer of orchestral, chamber, choral and vocal music, has received many international prizes and awards.

Dorothee Schabert (b.1952) is a composer and an author, composing for classical instruments, voices and ensembles, but also computer compositions and sound installations. Her essays on the aesthetics of technology and music, of sound and space in contemporary compositions, have appeared in various booklets.

Solberg and Fiedler will perform on October 20 at 7:30pm in St. John’s Episcopal Church

Both the church and MISU are located at 40 Market Street, Ellenville.

Check out the ad on page 5.

Greenwood Lake Public Library is presenting a solo exhibit by awardwinning artist Mitchell Saler. His realistic landscape oil paintings are on view from October 4-31

Saler’s paintings include scenes depicting the local Hudson Valley area as well as places he has traveled. In his landscapes, he enjoys conveying the vastness, beauty and power of nature. He frequently paints en plein air, and is inspired by the Hudson River School’s majestic landscapes.

Saler is a member of the Salmagundi Club in NYC, Goshen Art League, Orange County Arts Council, Middletown Art Group, and Wallkill River School.

He graduated with an Associate Degree in Visual Arts from SUNY Orange in Middletown and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing, summa cum laude, from SUNY New Paltz.

Mitchell has received over 20 awards in various exhibits including two awards from the Salmagundi Club.

He lives in Middletown and teaches an art class at the Mulberry House Senior Center as well as private lessons.

For more about the artist, visit his website: www.mitchellsaler.com.

ARTery Gallery: Decade Long Tradition Continues

The ARTery Gallery has announced the annual dual-featured exhibits of Marie Liu and Randall FitzGerald titled Home - Land. Both long-time ARTery members, it has become a decade long tradition for them to share the stage for their featured exhibits.

Marie Liu, current director of the cooperative gallery, has been painting images inspired by Milford and The Poconos since 2009. With a seemingly endless supply of interesting subjects, from the landscape, waterways and waterfalls, to the unique history and notable people who have also called this place home, all find their way into her imagery.

One of the subjects she is drawn to has been the Lenape original people. Sensing the energy that is calling them back home, Marie has created a painting of Nora Thompson Dean aka Touching Leaves Woman, a renowned Lenape educator. Nora endeavored to preserve her people’s language, culture and knowledge of their homeland through her teaching. She visited the region (from her home in Oklahoma) in the 1970’s to protest the Tock Island Dam project and consult with archaeologist Herbert Kraft. Marie is excited to present this painting of Touching Leaves in her peoples’ historic homeland

with the sacred Delaware Tobacco in the foreground, as well as other new paintings that explore the depth and meaning of our experience in this place.

Randall FitzGerald, a long-standing member of the Gallery, has been photographing and painting for over 50 years. Professionally trained in the sciences as an ecologist, he has always endeavored to combine his artistic and scientific pursuits. His love for nature permeates his artistic life and consequently what he creates reflects the intimacy he enjoys with the natural world. His current work is dominated by rural landscapes, seascapes and bird life, with a flare for romanticism.

Although he has worked with oils,

It’s Augustana in October

In Autumn 2002 at Greenville University in Illinois, Dan Layus brought friends Josiah Rosen, Kyle Baker, and Simeon Lohrmann together to write and create music, and Augustana was born. They originally wanted to call themselves The Looking Glass, but after discovering another band of the same name they chose “Augustana” instead.

Augustana is back with new music, and through its formation, creator Dan Layus has stepped into a new musical universe. While the group is well-known for their anthemic indierock leaning hits like Boston, Sweet and Low and Steal Your Heart, Augustana’s consistent march of new and everevolving material has embodied a refusal to settle artistically. Never has that been more clearly evident than with the latest studio album, Everyday an Eternity: Solo Piano Works, a genre-shaking fulllength record.

Composing and performing a series of piano pieces that can easily live in the contemporary classical world, Dan Layus confidently chooses to leave his singing voice aside for the project and instead finds his lyricism echoing through the hammers and strings of the piano.

The album finds the composer’s unique melodic and structural stylings effortlessly blending between the classical, the romantic and the modern. Along the way, the unfamiliar terrain for the artist seems to become more familiar with each note, each modulation, each variation, as he makes his way out to the edge of musical expression and safely back home again.

Augustana’s Dan Layus comes to the City Winery Hudson Valley stage in the Hudson Valley Falls Room with a genre-defying collection of powerful piano compositions in concert with the Everyday an Eternity Tour on October 26 at 8:00pm at 23 Factory Street, Montgomery. Doors open 6:00pm.

UpFront Exhibition Space, Port Jervis: New “Jazz Crawl” & Group Art Show

The groove port music series in Port Jervis continues with Sooner, comprised of Sylvester Germaine (guitar, bass and electronics) and Charlotte Greve (alto sax, voice and synthesizer).

Greve began playing classical flute at the age of eight and picked up the saxophone at sixteen. Originally from Germany, she is presently a NYbased alto saxophonist and composer with a unique concept of tone and composition. She has been making a mark on both the Brooklyn and German Jazz scenes.

Expect back beats, enigmatic lyrics and grooves bathed in swirling synths, alto saxophone, electric bass and guitars: music that is as uncategorizable as the musicians are versatile. A captivating blend of jazz, ambient and rock, with a rarely heard compositional rigour.

See Sooner on October 15 at 7:00pm at UpFront Exhibition Space, 31 Jersey Ave., Port Jervis. Tickets at the door. BYOB! The Gallery opens at 1:00pm for viewing the current Group Art Show.

Rosalind “Roz” Hodgkins is showing a mini-retrospective of her 1980s Neo Expressionist paintings. The works are done on paper and executed in oil stick, pastel and pencil.

The manner and furious palette explode in a fast and loose style with figurative elements dancing in and out of focus among the slashed paint strokes. By the 1990s, Roz’ geometric abstraction paintings in gouache, also in this show, have become quiet, contemplative studies. The works appear to symbolize conversations between forms in a defined space; her use of light, color and energized brush strokes create aesthetic dramas.

Daniela “Dani” Cooney approaches her figurative paintings with a careful practiced eye. She chooses subjects that

resonate with her whether it’s a local landscape, animal or flower - she is meticulous in her execution. The overall brushwork is smooth and detailed. Her ways of seeing often break out of realism and wander into abstraction with playful colors and forms. She is continually expanding her range of skill.

Sculpture by Gordon Graff is a convergence of utility and art. The origins of the parts in each piece come with a cultural and worked history that he expands into a composition of fiction. By placing these disparate objects together, they become characters in a conversation, speaking from their cultural, utilitarian past. They ask for interpretation by use of the viewer’s

perception and imagination. Gordon has an intuitive sense in his placement of the objects while giving them a new life.

The show is on view through October 30. For information, call 845-754-1808.

NEW to the local Jazz scene, UpFront co-owner/sculptor Gordon Graff and renown jazz musician Robert Kopec are introducing the first annual Jazz Crawl on October 30 at 2:00pm, with Jazz artists TBA appearing in downtown Port Jervis: UpFront Exhibition Space, Gio’s Cafe, 30-32 Front Street, and Fox-NHare Brewery, 46 Front Street.

Fascinating Sullivan County History

A Wild West Town, Cimarron City came to Monticello around 1960. It was complete with bank, train and stage coach robberies, a saloon, paddle wheel river boat, animal farm, Indian village and alligator wrestling.

He will speak about Cimarron City, A Theme Park at the Ethelbert B Crawford Library on October 6 at 6:00pm. If you went there or worked there or just want to learn more about this amazing attraction, attend this interesting program on the history of Cimarron City, and be sure to bring your memories and memorabilia

For inquiries, call 845-428-3111.

Also at the Library, Sullivan County historian John Conway will present a fascinating new program entitled, After the Fall: Life After Sullivan County’s

Golden Age

After his nearly thirty years as Sullivan County historian, John Conway’s timeline depicting the evolution of the Sullivan County resort industry is well known to many, and concepts such as the Silver Age and the Golden Age have entered the mainstream vernacular. But what happened in Sullivan County after the Golden Age ended?

Conway examines and explains that time period, including the airport, proposed convention centers, and music festivals - real and imagined - on October 13 at 6:00pm.

Both programs will be held inside in the Library’s Robert D Norris Community Room, 470 Broadway, Monticello. Registration is required.

Shawn Barker’s Johnny Cash Tribute

“When you love music as much as I do and people love Johnny Cash as much as they do, there really isn’t much of a

I do what I do so people can continue to enjoy the music of Johnny Cash over and over again,” says Shawn Barker. “Nothing beats a live show and since we cannot see Johnny live any more, I am proud to be celebrating his music each and every time I go on stage. As one of his greatest fans, I am as loyal to his music as the next Johnny Cash lover. We cover pretty much all of Cash’s musical career, starting with the Sun Records and early stuff up to some of the things he did with Rick Rubin and the American recordings. Johnny’s music has feeling and that’s something you get best from a live show.”

Shawn Barker’s first Man In Black show was held in 2004 at a casino in Niagara Falls and he has since performed over 1,000 shows in 12 countries, selling more than half a million tickets over the course of his career. Oddly enough, Barker’s first touring gigs were portraying Elvis, not Johnny Cash. Everything changed, however, when Barker was asked to audition for the part of Cash in a Hollywood production, as it became evident to the director and

Barker himself that Johnny Cash was his true calling. From that point there was no turning back.

With his strikingly similar looks, baritone voice, and spot-on mannerisms, Barker’s uncanny resemblance to the original Man In Black revitalizes the true character and spirit of Cash himself, one of America’s greatest musical icons, for a truly one-of-a-kind show. The show features Barker in character throughout the entire evening, walking the audience through each era of Cash’s life and music, including hits like Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk The Line, A Boy Named Sue, Hurt and Ring of Fire, complete with a full backing band.

The Man In Black stops on October 6 at 8:00pm at the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center

Blues & Buffet for Animal Rescue

Blue Arrow Farm is the brainchild of Don Oriolo, a lifelong animal activist. When the overgrown, falling down farm came up for sale, Don made a commitment to buy it and bring it back to its one-time glory of the winter headquarters for the Meadowlands racehorses, the difference being that Don’s mission was to create a loving, safe environment for the horses (and every other animal for that matter) that need rescuing from ofttimes deplorable conditions.

Horses, alpacas, cows, sheep, goats, mules, chickens, ducks, and pigs who were tossed away, being sent to slaughter, were all rescued and given sanctuary by Don and his amazing staff. Don also spearheaded the biggest cat rescue of over 200 cats recorded in the history of the northeast, contracting a chronic airborne illness in the process.

The Animal Rescue Farm Blues Buffet Benefit takes place on October 16, from 2:00pm-6:00pm at Blue Arrow Farm, 86 Glenwood Road, Pine Island.

The fundraiser for the farm features a concert with Woodstock recording artists

Professor Louie and the Crowmatix, Oriolo’s Felix and the Cats, and special guest rock-n-roll photographer Sue Fino, who will present and share her incredible

The fundraiser also features Hudson Valley’s own Culinary Rocker/Chef to the Stars Johnny Ciao who will prepare his inventive culinary dishes.

Entranced by the Hudson Valley, Mary Mugele Sealfon enjoys plein air painting, portraiture and still life in pastel and oil. She taught art at SUNY Orange and the Wallkill River School (WRS) and is currently represented by the WRS, Montgomery. She is a member of the Garrison Art Center and several local art organizations. Recently, she participated in the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival (see page 26), Tuxedo Plein Air and painting Warwick Gradens.

In NYC she pursued a career as Art Director and designer for various publications and companies. She also studied at the School of Visual Arts, the Art Students League and with noted regional artists. Her awardwinning works and prints have been shown nationally and internationally.

“Though I grew up amidst the

amazing beauty of the San Francisco bay area and the Sierra Mountains of California, I find the Hudson Valley equally inspiring. With fellow plein air artists, I have been fortunate to paint many vistas such as those painted by the original Hudson River artists. Whether portrait or landscape, I prefer to work from life. Paintings are more alive when painted on location. Perhaps the joy of the experience is somehow transferred to the painting,” states Mary.

Mary will exhibit her paintings at Leo’s Restaurant, 46 Quaker Avenue, Cornwall, from October 8 to November 8. Go and get a delicious meal at Leo’s while viewing beautiful paintings!

“The 39 Steps”

The 39 Steps is a play adapted by Patrick Barlow, from the novel by John Buchan, from the movie by Alfred Hitchcock, and an original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon: a parody of the 1935 film.

The play includes all the suspense of a civilian becoming mistakenly caught up in a spy ring, but with the hilarity of 4 actors taking on all 150 parts - sometimes even simultaneously - all while inserting references and puns to several famous Hitchcock films.

It is the winner of the 2008 Tony for Best Play, the Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience, and the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.

Directed by Christopher Paul Meyer (former bouncer, firefighter, soldier, comic & prison chaplain, pictured on right), a reading of the play takes place on Saturdays,

October 8-29 at 7:00pm, at Vet Rep Theatre, 16, Quaker Avenue, Cornwall. Pay What You Can.

DVAA: Objects & Sculptures; Paintings & Multi-Media

The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) is presenting two exhibitions: 3,2,1, Ring Baloney! featuring objects and sculptures by Ryan Ward, and Subterranean, curated by Rashmi Viswanathan with works by Jamie Kim and Francis Estrada

“3,2,1, RING BALONEY!”

reality, or simply a chance to win. A place where fact and fiction become one, and we don’t really care. Glossy, colorful, tasty things are for sale, and we are along for the ride.

“SUBTERRANEAN”

Curated by Rashmi Viswanathan, Subterranean brings together two artists, Jamie Kim and Francis Estrada, whose works show a narrative caught between the past and the present.

Kim’s figurative paintings & portraits are heavily influenced by news and media sources, traditional Korean folk-art imagery, and childhood photographs. She juxtaposes elements from her personal history with those from collective cultural memory, blending seemingly disparate

Ring toss. WhacA-Mole. Skee-ball. Hot Shot. Water guns. Guess-myweight. These were the classics. These were how Ryan Ward earned his first paycheck. At a certain point, outside of the obvious perils of the job, Ward began to ask himself: What exactly happens at an amusement park? He defines it as one giant social and psychological experiment where we enter into an unwritten agreement to suspend disbelief. It is a place where we form groups and watch one another willingly act out fantastical stories for pleasure, a chance to escape established

elements into imaginary narratives that feel real and familiar.

Estrada’s multi-disciplinary practice extracts from multiple archives. From the American archival footage of its short-lived but impactful occupation of the Philippines to contemporary news imagery of state-sanctioned violence under the current regime of Rodrigo Duterte. Re-interpreting historical archives within a decolonial and anti-authoritarian framework, he reimagines the lives and times of people placed at the margins of the state.

Donna Reis is the author of two full length poetry collections: Torohill (Deerbrook Editions, 2022) and No Passing Zone (Deerbrook Editions, 2012), which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her non-fiction book, Seeking Ghosts in the Warwick Valley: 60 Personal Accounts (Schiffer Publishing, Ltd, 2003) has sold over 3000 copies.

Rashmi Viswanathan is a modern and contemporary art historian who looks at how arts move across different cultural, regional, and temporal contexts. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hartford and lives in Brooklyn.

See the work through October 30 at DVAA, 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg. Free & open to the public; masks recommended. Visit delawarevalleyartsalliance.org or call 845-252-7576.

Donna Spector was the winner of the Masters Poetry Prize, three-times nominated for the Pushcart Prize, a semi-finalist for the Brittingham Poetry Prize, and Emily Dickinson Poetry Award. A program of her poems was produced by Australia National Radio.

Reis and Spector call themselves “The other Donnas,” and they will read their poems on October 8 at 7:00pm at the Amity Gallery, 110 Newport Bridge Road, Warwick.

The Florida Public Library’s Annual Fall Poetry Cafe: Janet Hamill

Janet Hamill (see photo) is an American poet and spoken word artist. Her poem K-E-R-O-U-A-C was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and her fifth collection, Body of Water, was nominated for the William Carlos Williams Award by the Poetry Society of America. A strong proponent of the spoken word, she has read widely in NYC, across the country and in Europe at museums, venues and festivals.

Hamill is the author of over half a dozen books of poetry, prose and short fiction. After many years at the forefront of the downtown NYC literary community

where she read frequently at venues such as the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church inthe-Bowery, wrote, directed and acted in Bob Holman’s Poet’s Theatre and performed with new wave musician Adele Bertei, she moved to the Hudson Valley.

“Her work is at turns enigmatic, surreal, alchemical. Illuminated internally/ eternally today as the manuscripts of Blake were in another time. Her canvas is a deep and breathtaking sea of chance, of shameless greens and blues, ‘dark blue stronger than the Flemish blue

of hummingbirds’. A place where Buster Keaton turns somersaults in air beneath a butterfly umbrella, where hands brush a chest, coming away with diamond dust and the night is inhabited by saurian daemons, mendicants, wild dogs. Vermillion tents and altars of alabaster where ‘Victorious dark-eyed sleep embraces you with embroidered flowers and the deep song of subterranean waterfalls’.

“A poet shawafa, Janet Hamill is a wise woman, a witch, a jinn. When I approach her work, I say “Quli Taslim!”,

(I submit to the powers of the Jinn) and am unafraid of the fires I discover there for they never cease to warm me into new dreams, new journeys.” - Adele Bertei.

The Florida Public Library will host its annual Fall Poetry Café on October 9 at 1:00pm. Robert Milby (see pg. 12) will emcee the evening which will feature both Janet Hamill and Douglas Weed. An open reading will begin and end the café, outside on the Library’s deck. Seating is limited so be sure to register at www.floridapubliclibrary.org.

The Library is located at 4 Cohen Circle, Florida. For info: 845-651-7659.

Goshen Art League: Last Installment of “Mini Solos” and Two NEW Exhibits

The Goshen Art League (GAL) invites you to the third and last installation of Mini Solos at their home gallery in the Goshen Music Hall (223 Main Street). This final installment will be on display through October 28.

This installment of Mini Solos features the art of six different GAL artists. Participating artist, Ciro Attardo shared, “It’s so nice to see many talented artists share their work with the local community. Now that we’re rebounding from extended isolation, I would encourage people to come out and be inspired by work that is on par with that exhibited in exclusive galleries.”

Pat MacDonald, the lead curator for the show, added, “Dr. Attardo is one of our newest GAL members, and we welcome him as we do all local artists. A

retired family practitioner, he is a very talented artist, mostly selftaught, who has grown his talent through classes at the Wallkill River School.”

Long time GAL member, Ginirose Sivilli, is using the Mini Solos group show as it was intended: to give local patrons of the arts an opportunity to get to know and understand the local artists and their work. She had this to say about her exhibited work: “My mini solo show at the Goshen Music Hall is based on water, which I believe is life. I was inspired by the opera Tommy written by a band called The Who about a deaf, non-verbal, blind child. SEA ME is a collection of six paintings featuring the mighty and beautiful ocean. See Me, Feel

Me, Touch Me, Heal

Me; my paintings of the ocean were inspired by Luis Camara master artist from Spain.”

A reception will be held on October 19 from 6:30pm-8:00pm

The public is invited to view works in various media created by GAL artists for Mini Solos Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00am-5:00pm or by appointment.

In addition, GAL will be installing two new shows:

Rocky Horror - Live and On Screen

The Musical: Forestburgh

The Film: Sugar Loaf

In this cult classic, the story centers on a young engaged couple, Brad & Janet, whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle where they seek a telephone to call for help. The castle or country home is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes celebrating an annual convention. They discover the head of the house is Dr. Frank N. Furter, an apparently mad scientist who actually is an alien transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, who creates a living muscle man named Rocky in his laboratory.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show will run at the Forestburgh Tavern, 39 Forestburgh Road, from October 7-29 Doors open at 6:00pm for dinner and drinks. Dinner service ends at 7:30pm and the show starts at 8:00pm

For tickets: www.fbplayhouse.org

Still in limited release in 2022, some 47 years after its premiere, it is the longest-running theatrical release in film history. Today, the film has a large international cult following and has been considered as one of the greatest musical films of all time. In 2005, it was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: 47th Anniversary Spectacular Tour comes to Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center, 231 Creamery Pond Road, Chester, on October 26 at 8:00pm. Meet Milford’s First Poet Laureate

The ARTery Gallery is pleased to announce a poetry reading featuring Milford’s first Poet Laureate, Chuck O’Neil

Recently, Chuck read at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Milford on Memorial Day, and appeared with Chief Daniel StrongWalker Thomas at the Milford Theater for a Grey Towers Heritage Association Lenape homecoming event. The ARTery is honored to present Mr. O’Neil for a full-length reading, the first since his appointment as Poet Laureate this year.

A resident of Milford since 1982, O’Neil’s poems are rich with local imagery, yet often in their specificity they speak beyond a particular place to what it means to be human, alive in the world - in the same way that a painting can awaken the interior life of the viewer.

Gallery Director Marie Liu states: “The moment I learned that Milford had named a Poet Laureate, I wanted to get in touch with him. Our town is steeped in the arts, and with such a variety of festivals and events like Opera in the Park, Music-Fest, Readers and Writers Festival, Dance-Fest, Black Bear Film

Festival, and it seemed to me that poetry should also be featured in our community.”

Chuck O’Neil’s reading coincides with Liu’s featured exhibit, since both painter and poet use their work to express their sense of belonging to a place beyond current experience or time: ‘...And though I’d never Passed those buildings before I remembered them

And it seemed to me I was always From that place

I arrive today As I arrived Years ago...’ from “The Borough”

The free poetry reading will be on October 21, at 7:00pm at 210 Broad Street. Author-signed books will be available for purchase (cash or check only) with all proceeds donated to the Greater Pike Community Foundation For more information: 570-409-1234.

“tick, tick....BOOM!” in Sugar Loaf

Produced by The Warwick Dance Collective and The Warwick Broadway Collective, the resident companies of Warwick Center for the Performing Arts, owned and directed by Melissa Padham-Maass, in its ongoing pursuit of excellence and cultural development in the Hudson Valley, is presenting its inaugural Actors Equity Association production, tick, tick… BOOM!, as it develops its professional theater outreach in Orange County.

RENT was not Jonathan Larson’s only musical. He spent a six year period between 1985 and 1991 working on Superbia, a science fiction musical set in the year 2064. His next work was an autobiographical “rock monologue” entitled 30/90. Written as a solo piece for himself, Jonathan created the piece in response to his feelings of rejection caused by the disappointment of the unproduced Superbia. The one-man show was renamed tick, tick... Boom! and received a limited off-Broadway production in 1991.

After Jonathan’s death in 1996, playwright David Auburn reconfigured

tick, tick... Boom! into a three-actor musical which premiered Off-Broadway at the Jane Street Theater, and is the current version of the show which you will see at Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center, 1351 Kings Highway, Sugar Loaf from October 14-16. The show is directed by Jessica McRoberts, with musical direction by Richard Schacher, choreography by Sara Edwards, and starring Broadway veterans Jennifer DiNoia, Harris M Turner, and Paul Peglar as Larson.

In addition to the show there will be a pre-show: A Jonathan Larson Celebration featuring the Warwick Dance Collective and the Warwick Broadway Collective, as well as talented kids and adults from the Orange County area.

Falcon’s Jazz Coalition Continues

The Jazz Coalition, a vital artistic and financial support initiative for jazz musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic, announces a new fundraising campaign to help support their presentation of live concert performances and recordings of commissioned artists and works.

Calling on industry professionals, artists, advocates, and fans to contribute as individuals to this larger effort, the Jazz Coalition launched its Commission Fund, awarding $1,000 grants to 104 musicians in support of new music to capture this moment and point a way toward transcendence.

To start, the new campaign will fund the live concert performances and recordings of 15 previously commissioned artists and their ensembles at The Falcon in Marlboro. “The idea to create the Jazz Coalition series stems from the success we have had with the Sunday Night Jazz series I booked at The Falcon, which began in

late February and ran through June 26,” said Danny Melnick “I was able to use some of the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) funds I received to pay the artists this season and now we are taking it to another level with the Jazz Coalition, giving us an opportunity to have commissioned artists play their pieces live. Many of these performances will mark the world premieres of these important compositions.”

Lee Falco of The Falcon stated, “My father, Tony Falco, created an incredible space at The Falcon for music to be shared at the highest level of quality. It’s an honor to work with the Jazz Coalition to continue our tradition of presenting world class jazz in the Hudson Valley and further our mission to ‘support living artists at The Falcon and beyond.’”

See captions for acts and dates. Performances begin at 7:00pm at The Falcon, 1348

Eldred Cabaret Hosts “Mormons”

John Pinto Jr. and Jaron Barney, stars of The Book of Mormon’s second national tour, will continue the Bradstan Coming Home Cabaret Series with a night full of show tunes, ‘80s hits, and more.

Pinto (a graduate of Delaware Valley High School in Milford) and Barney performed together for nearly two years after meeting on The Book of Mormon tour. Pinto still performs with The Book of Mormon on Broadway, while Barney cruises the globe performing the songs of the legendary Carole King. The duo is reuniting for one night only for their debut performance!

“Not only am I performing just a few minutes from where I grew up, but I am also performing in a space that I was able to watch - and help - go from a construction site to the beautiful place it is today,” shared Pinto. “That’s right! During the Broadway shutdown in 2020, I went back home to be with my family, and ended up helping my father install tile at The Eldred Preserve. Now being able to perform there really brings the

whole thing full circle, and that’s just so cool.”

Outdoor Sculptures in Narrowsburg

Artist and local sculptor Naomi Teppich has joined local writer Cass Collins, known as the “River Muse” for her long-running column in the River Reporter newspaper, to present a public art garden in the Flats in Narrowsburg.

Using the writer’s family property on Second Avenue, the sculptor has installed her work, Cactus Cocoon, a large outdoor sculpture, 10’h x 7’l x 5’w, made of steel, colored cement and ornamental paint. The work is a commentary on global warming that was conceived for and first shown at Catskill Art Society in 2012, indoors.

Later, it was shown at Collaborative Concepts group outdoor sculpture show in Garrison. It was also shown at the North Bennington Outdoor Sculpture Show, North Bennington, VT and after that at Beacon in 2017.

“Walking in a Circle” by Martin Springhetti

The sculpture will be on view as a loan through May 1, 2024.

An additional sculpture called Walking in a Circle by Martin Springhetti

was recently added to the grounds. It was previously exhibited at the Himalayan Institute, Honesdale. It is 6.5’h and made of steel rebar, metal mesh and black caulking.

Guests are welcome from 10:00am-6:00pm daily to view these sculptures. Collins plans to offer the one-acre lot next to her home for juried sculpture displays.

The Wallkill River School’s 7th Annual “Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival”

The 7th annual Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival (HVPAF) is scheduled for October 10-15. Sponsored by the Wallkill River School (WRS), the event attracts artists from across the United States to an outdoor, week-long plein air painting festival. Keep watch for artists standing along scenic roadways or overlooks painting the beautiful fall vistas before them! Stop and chat with the artists and learn all about the challenges and pleasures of plein air painting.

The breathtaking scenery of the Hudson Valley has been a joy for plein air artists and art collectors dating back centuries. HVPAF is committed to the community’s participation in this event and has introduced a line-up of events for adults and children alike.

The Festival week kicks off on October 10 at 10:00am with a Quick Draw competition at City Winery in the Village of Montgomery. The plein air competition artists, along with registered community participants, will be

competing in a two-hour session painting the landscapes before them. The framed paintings will be judged at 1:00pm, and prizes will be awarded to those pieces judged best for first, second or third place. In addition, many of the paintings will be offered for sale at 1:30pm

The Quick Draw is a great opportunity to watch artists paint landscapes in the village of Montgomery or on the grounds of City Winery. Children are invited to participate free. Adults wishing to compete should register and pay $15 online. For information and to register, visit hvpleinair.com.

Master artist Andrew Lattimore’s landscape painting demo & workshop is on October 11, 9:00am-10:00am at Lawrence Farms, 306 Frozen Ridge Road, Newburgh. The community is welcome to observe the workshop for a $30 fee. The 2-hour workshop immediately follows the demo. Artists will begin painting their own landscape paintings of the farm, and Mr. Lattimore

will provide suggestions, feedback and instructions.

The community is welcome to participate in the demonstration and workshop for a $45 fee. Space is limited. For information and to register, visit hvpleinair. com or call 845-457-2787.

Observe artists painting from 9:00am-Noon at the following locations during Festival week. Free to the public, no registration required.

October 14 at the Goshen Farmers Market, 255 Main Street, Goshen. A popular Friday morning event, the market’s vibrant activity along with

tents, produce, and other products make an interesting scene for painting en plein air. In addition, the artists may also paint the historic village architecture.

The Festival’s reception, free to the public, begins at Noon on October 15 at the WRS, 232 Ward Street, Montgomery. The reception begins with a painting demonstration by awardwinning artist and event juror, Joseph Sundwall.

Following the one-hour demo, Sundwall will award prizes to the artists with the best plein air paintings completed during the Festival week. In addition, the gallery will be open for viewing and sale of the paintings until 5:00pm.

S. Fallsburg: Kids’ Acting Opportunity

The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop (SCDW) is seeking young actors for its Youth Holiday Show, ages 5 to 14. The show, Andy Pavey’s - A Christmas Carol, is a comedic adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved tale.

In this short version, the visiting ghosts are rather unusual. The Ghost of Christmas Past is Belle, Scrooge’s former fiancée - awkward! The Ghost of Christmas Present is, well, a present, and The Ghost of Christmas Future is a rapper and wannabe comedian.

Despite their quirkiness, will the ghosts be able to help Scrooge snap out of his need for greed? They’ll have to tug on his heart and purse strings to instill the Christmas spirit into the old miser!

Andrew Pavey (pictured on right) is a writer hailing from the tiny riverside town of LeClaire, Iowa.

Enthralled with creative writing since he was very young, he enjoys writing (of course!), reading, backpacking, and riding his bicycle. He previously spent nine years with Davenport Junior

Theatre, the second-oldest children’s theatre in the United States, where he acted in productions, managed the props building, and wrote plays for young actors to perform.

Roles include Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Mrs. Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Marley, Sister # 1, Sister # 2, Ghost of Christmas past (Belle), Ghost of Christmas Present and Ghost of Christmas Future.

Audition dates are October 8 & 9 from 10:00am-2:00pm at the Rivoli Theatre, 5243 Main Street, South Fallsburg. Show dates are December 9 & 10 at 7:00pm and December 11 at 1:00pm.

Sculpture & Squares in Newburgh

Holland Tunnel Gallery in Newburgh presents an exhibit of works by Thornton Willis and Bix Lye titled, Matter of Fact. The works being shown by Willis feature bold colorful squares and rectangles, and are beautifully placed forming strong compositions. Lye’s exquisitely executed sculptures of intriguing forms and color combinations create moments of contemplation in three dimensional form.

“Willis deals in the fusion of opposites: translucency and opacity; expansion and contraction; open and closed; tension and release. His paintings explore beginnings, first steps, and the building blocks of picture-making - the progression of point to line to plane; and of movement arrested in the plane...and whole planes of scratchy color churn with a flurry of brushwork, reminding us that flat color - vibrating, pulsing - needn’t sit there inactively.” -

Lance Esplund on Willis. British-American artist Bix Lye’s sculptures challenge definition. “Lye’s sculpture simultaneously reads as a contained, solid object and a construction of modular componentsits finely crafted geometry conjures up references to Tony Smith and even Sol LeWitt; however, the work provides just enough color and whimsy to eschew the reductive stereotype.” - The Brooklyn Rail.

See the show from October 1 to November 6 at Holland Tunnel Gallery, 46 Chambers Street, Newburgh. Gallery hours are Saturdays & Sundays, from 1:00pm-5:00pm and by appointment by phoning 917-520-8971.

Sarah - Not Vaughan - Charles

As an aspiring jazz singer, the teenage Sarah Elizabeth Charles (pictured) wanted to be Sarah Vaughan. But after writing a lot of tunes that she imagined Vaughan might have sung, she sensed the songs were not a fully authentic expression of her artistic self. She needed to reassess her goals.

In 2012, she debuted with the album

Red, on which she was supported by drummer John Davis, pianist Jesse Elder, and bassist Burniss Earl Travis, collectively known as the S.E. Charles Quartet. This remarkably agile jazz vocalist and composer will appear at The Falcon, 1348 Route 9W, Marlboro, on October 30 at 7:00pm as part of the Jazz Coalition Campaign series. See page 24.

SCCO Invites You Back to an 18th Century Kaffeehaus!

Take a moment to go back in time to the Zimmermann Kaffeehaus where Johann Sebastian Bach is set to premiere his newest work, Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht… known today more affectionately as “The Coffee Cantata.” This mini operetta/comic opera is a story of a father intent on marrying his daughter to a proper suitor, but the young woman would rather enjoy her favorite caffeinated beverage.

Bach composed it probably between 1732 and 1735. He regularly directed a musical ensemble based at Zimmermann’s coffee house called Collegium Musicum, which was founded by composer Georg Philipp Telemann in 1702 (as a law student). The libretto suggests that some people in 18th century Germany viewed coffee drinking as a bad habit.

In 1723, the year Bach moved to Leipzig, Zimmermann’s was the largest and bestappointed kaffeehaus in Leipzig and a centre for middle class gentlemen. While women were forbidden from frequenting coffeehouses, they could attend public concerts at Zimmermann’s.

The coffeehouse was located at 14 Katharinenstrasse, then the most elegant street of Leipzig, connecting the Brühl to the market place. The name

of the street had been taken from the old St. Catherine’s Chapel which had been demolished in 1544. In Telemann’s and Bach’s day, only the name of the street remained.

The concerts directed by Bach lasted about two hours and consisted of German and Italian opera, chamber music, secular cantatas, and works for orchestra. Zimmermann charged the Collegium Musicum no fee for hosting their concerts, nor were the audience charged a fee; Zimmermann’s expenses were repaid by sales of coffee. The concerts ended with Zimmermann’s death in 1741.

Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, and light snacks as Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra (SCCO) chamber musicians perform a variety of baroque music by

Bach, Handel, Telemann and others as the house band for a performance. Musicians for the evening will include SCCO co-founders Akiko Hosoi and Andrew Trombley with Chiu Chen Liu, and Kenneth Hamrick, among others.

SCCO’s performances are October 22 at 6:00pm at the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre, 219 Main Street. For tickets, visit www.hurleyvilleartscentre. org. The second concert is on October 23 at 3:00pm at the Jeffersonville Bakeshop, 4906 Route 52, Jeffersonville. For tickets, visit: www.nesinculturalarts. eventbrite.com.

SCCO is a Nesin Cultural Arts supported project. This program is made possible in part by funding from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathleen Courtney Hochul and the NY State Legislature.

First Fellowship

Ann Street Gallery is presenting their first Emerging Artist Fellowship exhibition, Anthology, featuring Kammy Daydream, Myra Grice, Fernanda Mello, Neen Rivera, & Angelís Wong

Anthology, a collective vision assembled together in the spirit of temporal togetherness - a term taken from theorist and artist Mieke Bal’s writing, Exhibition-ism, that proposes the act of exhibiting as the loci where art becomes contemporary in the company of an audience. The “being-together-intime of an exhibition” serves as a place of confluence, where art comes alive in the context of the gallery and in the context of each other’s presence.

The show, running through November 19, reflects our current moment, a signal of continued solidarity in the post-2020 aftermath where togetherness may still feel strange or taboo. Each artist’s identity, as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and Latinx, revalidates the local artist community and breathes contemporaneity by mirroring the cultural production of the larger population of Newburgh, revealing the subcurrents which flow through the city.

Ann Street Gallery is located at 104 Ann Street, Newburgh.

Classical Music: A Lecture & Concert

“Classical Music can mean different things to different people,” says Kenneth Korn. “Sometimes it is a general term for anything that might be played by a symphony orchestra, regardless of who wrote it. Music by Bach and Stravinsky may have little in common but in the common use of the word they both would be considered “Classical”. But there also is a more historical definition of “Classical Music.”

“In a lecture and performance, The Kemyndable Flute Trio will explain what makes music classical. Beyond just that it was written by a Mozart or a Haydn, or that it was written in the late 1700’s, we will also talk about the classical aesthetic. We will play examples of phrasing, balance, form and other components of the music that demonstrate the classical style.”

The Trio will perform music by Mozart, Devienne, James Hook, and more.

François Devienne (1759-1803) was active in Paris as a flutist, bassoonist and composer, and played bassoon at the Paris Opera. He wrote successful operas in the 1790s. In 1795 he was appointed flute professor at the Paris Conservatory. He wrote Méthode de Flûte Théorique et Pratique (1793), which was reprinted

several times and did much to improve the level of French wind music in the late 18th century.

James Hook (1746-1827) was an English composer and organist. Throughout these years he composed operas and other musical works, most of which were produced at Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theatres. He frequently collaborated with family members. His wife Elizabeth wrote the libretto for the opera The Double Disguise. His son James provided librettos for Jack of Newbury and Diamond Cut Diamond, and his son Theodore Edward composed librettos for at least eight operas.

The lecture and performance is on October 19 at 10:00am at the Alice Desmond Center, 6 Albany Post Road, Newburgh. To register: 845-565-1326.

We Love Lists

Whether it’s the best restaurants near Lincoln Center or the top grossing movies of all time, we love lists. When we’re in a hurry, it’s an easy way to learn what we want to know in the shortest amount of time.

Music Now

Sony sold over 200 million cassette tape players until they were discontinued in 2010. Between then and now, music streaming has all but left traditional media in the dust, but by whatever means we’re hearing it, the band plays on.

Here’s a list of Billboard’s most popular songs as of this writing: Bad Habit, Me Porto Bonito, As It Was, Wait for U, Glimpse, Sunroof, Titi Me Preguntô, About Damn Time, Vegas, 5 Foot 9, and I Like You

Music Back Then

In 1922, 100 years ago, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington, DC, and the construction of the Holland Tunnel began, linking New York and Jersey City under the Hudson River.

Tops on the 1922 Hit Parade of Songs were: Carolina in the Morning, Chicago, On the Alamo, My Buddy, Toot Toot, Tootsie!, Somebody Stole My Gal, Some Sunny Day, Way Down Yonder in New Orleans and I Wish That I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate.

Food Now

Grubhub and the USDA National Agricultural Library were among the compilers of today’s most popular foods: burrito bowl, cheeseburgers, hash browns, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, chicken quesadilla, California roll, edamame (pictured), french fries, cheese pizza, pad thai, mac & cheese, and waffle fries.

Food Back Then

A typical middle class family meal 100 years ago might have begun with celery stuffed with cream cheese and pimentos, a cup of clam broth, an entreé of baked ham served with boiled carrots and peas, fried cauliflower, and, for dessert, caramel custard.

Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra

Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra have over 117 recordings (5 Gold Records) and 18 Grammy Awards which puts them in the Top Ten list for All-Time Grammy Awards.

At the time that rock was reaching its crescendo, and in the era when Country was dazzling the nation, a strange phenomenon was taking place. In essence, this phenomenon was the rising popularity of Jimmy Sturr as the hottest musical attraction in the polka music field. The band constantly attracts crowds of screaming, adoring fans wherever their travels take them.

The polka is NOT a Polish dance, as many have come to believe. The polka is originally a Czech dance and genre of dance music familiar throughout all of Europe and the Americas. It originated in the middle of the nineteenth century in German and Austrian influenced Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. The term polka possibly comes from the Czech word “půlka” (“half”), referring to the short half-steps featured in the dance.

Today, Jimmy lives in the house he grew up in. His office is across the street from the high school he attended in

Florida. His hometown recently honored Jimmy by placing a Star of Fame in the walkway on Main Street. Downtown Florida also displays HOMETOWN OF POLKA KING JIMMY STURR signs at each entrance to the village.

Jimmy and the orchestra have an extensive road schedule of 165 dates per year. They crisscross the country and make several international trips (and cruises) yearly. While on the road, they travel in Jimmy’s forty-five foot customized tour bus. But for one of their October gigs they will all commute from their respective homes on November 5, just up the road a piece, to Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center for a 3:00pm performance. Don’t miss it!

Photographic History in Cragsmoor

Although there were two early Evans settlements in and around what is now Cragsmoor, the focus of this exhibition is the one settled by John Evans (1765-1847) and his wife, Catherine Crans (1768-1862) along the Towns of Wawarsing/ Shawangunk line. It is believed that this land was originally part of a large land grant given to Captain John Evans, commander of the “Richmond,” in the service of the British Crown in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The land eventually had to be sold in 1939. In the meantime, however, Susan Barkley Evans (1893-1963) had married Harry Weaver in 1918 in Newburgh and had been able to purchase a 40-acre tract of land to continue the family farming tradition in that area. Their descendant Joanne Stillwaggon married Dick Bierschenk, and in 1988 they bought the original land in Cragsmoor and built their own home.

And so, the story comes full circle, as Joanne is the granddaughter of Susan Barkley Evans. Once settled, Joanne began exploring the community and met life-long resident Ella Stedner, Director of the Cragsmoor Free Library and local historian leading the community. Joanne has brought this story to life for both present and future generations of the Evans family, Cragsmoor Historical Society’s Maureen Radl has written a detailed history of the family for the exhibit, Tom Hammond has shared his keen knowledge of the Evans family genealogy, and Beat Keerl, Director of Art Collections for the Library, organized and reproduced photographs for the historic display.

The John Evans Family: 1765 to 1997, an exhibition at the Cragsmoor Free Library, runs through November at 355 Cragsmoor Road. Phone: 845-647-4611.

Tango: Music-Dance-Party at HPAC

The Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet is widely acknowledged as one of the most compelling tango ensembles today, moving forward from the giant footsteps of Astor Piazzolla, and continuing to take this musical genre into new territories. With immense respect for its roots and rich musical past, the ensemble effectively serves as an active ambassador of tango and a proponent of its evolution.

The quartet’s fervent and virtuosic musical style takes elements from Argentine tango, European classical music and American Jazz, and combines them gracefully and organically, bringing something new and exciting to the form while retaining all the lushness and beauty that characterizes the genre.

The Quartet presents the evolution of tango, from its roots in the traditional Orquesta típica to tango nuevo as

epitomized by Piazzolla, featuring the award winning dancers Mariana Parma and Leonardo Sardella. Mariana Parma is an actor, professional dancer, instructor, and choreographer. She is recognized for her passion and versatility in both dance and acting.

Leonardo Sardella was born in Buenos Aires, and has been a leading or featured dancer in Tango shows presented in prestigious theaters in Buenos Aires and around the world.

Una Noche de Tango on October 15 has several events including a music performance (7:00pm), Tango lesson (7:50pm) dance performance (8:15pm), and a Milonga, (social tango dance), with live music and a DJ (8:20pm) at the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre, 219 Main Street. “A Harvest of Health” in Liberty

Once a large street fair in Liberty, the Liberty Harvest Festival has taken place for many years at the Liberty Museum & Arts Center (LMAC) on the Village of Liberty’s Main Street (46 South Main Street) across from the historic and newly restored Liberty Theater

For the almost 30 years of the festival, it has had many themes, most recently a celebration of the Arts. This year, for the first time, the festival takes on a holistic health theme with workshops and demonstrations on Yoga, Meditation and Reiki. “It seemed like the right theme at the right time after having emerged from two and a half years of the pandemic,” said LMAC Director Robert Dadras.

The Catskill Chili Cook-off, a staple at the Festival for over 25 years, has been infused with this same enthusiasm having added an Organic Chili category for the first time.

One chili that has been announced for the 2022 Cook-Off is a white bean borscht chili, a nod to both the new

category and those struggling to survive in conflicts in Eastern Europe. It looks to be the most adventurous (and possibly the most delicious) in this year’s coveted competition. The current very successful Sullivan County Arts Educators art exhibition has now been extended by popular demand through the end of October, and will be available to view at the Festival too, with artworks by Matthew Sherman, Lee Parks, Eliz Bassett, Kim Simons, Pat Gersten, Rocky Pinciotti, Chris Parrow, Judith Reeve, Stephen Morse, Kath Johansen, Brenda Sywalski, Jena Love, Ann Higgins and Valerie Taggert. There will also be wonderful live music, delicious food and beautiful crafts for sale at the Festival on October 15 from Noon-4:00pm, with the Chili Cook-off from 2:00pm-4:00pm

The Festival has always been free but does have small registration fees for a few of its workshops. Donations are always appreciated. Visit www.libertymuseum. com or call 845-292-3494.
