Hurleyville & Narrowsburg: Ladies Night The Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra will perform chamber music from three amazing composers. Fanny MendelssohnHensel’s music Akiko Hosoi, violin reflects her deep reverence for Bach and Beethoven as well as a strong influence from her brother, Felix. It exhibits a fine craftsmanship and lyricism typical Chiu-Chen Liu, viola of the post-Classical Mendelssohnian style, combined with her own inventive approach. María Teresa Gertrudis de Jesús Carreño García was a Venezuelan pianist, soprano, composer, and conductor. Over the course of her 54-year career, she became an internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and was often referred to as the “Valkyrie of the Piano”. Several composers dedicated their compositions to Carreño, including Amy Beach and Edward MacDowell. Dame Ethel Mary Smyth DBE was a member of the women’s suffrage movement (for which she spent two

months in prison). She was granted a damehood, the first female composer to be so honoured. Her opera, Der Wald, in 1903, Adrienne Harmon, mounted violin was for more than a century the only opera by a woman composer ever produced at the Metropolitan Opera. The performances are April 2 at 6:00pm at the Hurleyville Kirsten Jermé, cello Performing Arts Centre, 219 Main Street, and April 3 at 2:00pm at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg. Derick Melander creates clothing sculptures that explore the intersection between global consumerism and the intimate relationship we have with what we wear. For Melander, the process of sorting, folding and stacking adds a layer of meaning to the work. When he comes across a dress with a hand-sewn repair, a coat with a name written inside the collar, the work starts to feel like a collective portrait. His goal is to celebrate and honor both the individual and the community in each work he creates. Melander is Catskill Art Society’s (CAS) present Artist in Residence, creating his clothing sculptures at the CAS Laundry King, 65 Main Street, Livingston Manor, through April 23. The exhibition dates are April 9-23, with an opening reception on April 9, from 4:00pm-5:00pm. Visit www.catskillartsociety.org

Storytelling Via Visual Art Launching the 2022 art season for Holland Tunnel Gallery, The Narrative of Things looks at the relationship between narrative and objects bound together, exploring this concept from different facets through each artist’s own exploration of objects, stories, and experiences. In Kathleen Vance’s Travelling Landscapes, she builds lush landscapes in various travel cases that speak to the object they inhabit, thus creating discussions about our relationships with different environments. In Norm Magnusson’s Memory Sale, he has built stories around forlorn objects that he owns and has decided to let go of - the stories may or may not be factual and it is partially this combination that creates a dialogue. Shari Diamond’s 60 Year Project is a reflection of memories through the portal of snapshots from their life begun as a celebration as they entered their 6th decade. The snapshots are altered via various processes that in effect mirror the

way memory plays with those moments and stories over time. In Tamara Rafkin’s Lost&Found series, she has been documenting human kindness and empathy towards others by how people across cultural boundaries and countries treat the objects they find that someone has lost. Rafkin finds the act of empathy towards others to be the same regardless of the location. Rafkin who also curated The Narrative of Things states: “From landscapes that create stories to stories created around household items, reflections on one’s own life stories and stories lost and found, there are so many narratives we build around the objects that we interact with. Both the objects and the stories all become about us and the human condition. We are narrative creatures, storytelling is part of our souls and connects us all - sometimes through our things.” The exhibit runs through April 10 at Holland Tunnel Gallery, 46 Chambers Street, Newburgh.

May I Have A Word With You...

Quips, Quotes & Quiddities with Carol Pozefsky OH MY WORD! Consider the fun of wordplay and metaphor, the rapture of softly spoken words of love and the rich rewards of precise communication when our words hit the very mark we were aiming for. Charles Elster is a logophile, a lover of words. He notes that some of the more bizarre English words relate to the human body. If you’re prognathous, your jaw projects beyond the upper part of your face, like Popeye. If you’re macrotous, you have big ears. Is your nose proboscidiform? It resembles the trunk of an elephant. If your body is cucurbitaceous, it’s shaped like a cucumber or a squash. If you are Apollonian, you possess the beauty of classic Greek and Roman sculpture and, if you never appear to age, your enviable condition is agerasia, Greek for eternal youth. Never Metaphor I Didn’t Like Metaphors can be cruel and biting. Critic Alexander Woollcott wrote that reading Proust “is like bathing in someone

else’s dirty water.” New York Times art critic John Canady described New York’s Guggenheim Museum as a “war between architecture and painting in which both come out badly maimed.” LOOKING BACK Breezing through a carton of old journals, we find a list of favorite foreign words and phrases: (Portuguese) Um gato escaldado teme até. A scalded cat fears even cold water. (Latin) Fortiter in re, sed suaviter in modo. Strong in action but gentle in manner. (Latin) Facta non verba. Deeds not words. (Latin) Quot libras quam breve. So many books, so little time. (Latin) Bis dat qui cito dat. He gives twice who gives promptly. (Spanish) Lo pasado, pasado. What is past is past. (Latin) Mendacem memorem esse oportet. A liar needs a good memory. Etymologist Anagrams It’s my leg too. Met yogi lost. Get Limo toys. Tilt my goose.

“Vibrations & Magic” at the UUC Musician, dancer, composer and artist Judi Silvano pays tribute to other artists who have enriched her life with a solo art exhibit in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern. “I have lived a lifetime as a musician, dancer and artist,” says Silvano. “This exhibit is an outpouring of my inspiration in recent years documenting my innermost feelings and trying to capture movement and sounds in the visual dimension. “I’m thrilled to share this first-ever exhibit of the collection of my paintings of musicians and dancers who have enriched my life. The amazing thing is that I have known all these people, many of whom I’ve performed with! That is, with the exception of Isadora Duncan... I have been in the room and felt the vibrations of these artists creating their magic! “I am particularly thrilled to have been invited by the UUCRT and Wallkill River School of Art to exhibit my work, and I hope the feeling of Joy and the Wonder of Life are conveyed through my paintings,” she concluded. What Judi Silvano has been able

Film Reconstruction, Sci-Fi, Blacklisted Writers, Short Subjects in Ellenville Shadowland Stages is once again presenting its love letter to the community in the form of showcasing classic films at an affordable price with their spring 2022 series, Shadowland Studio Cinema. Shadowland looks forward to sharing their brand new second stage, The Studio at Shadowland Stages, where audiences will enjoy comfortable seating and available concessions. The Studio provides an intimate setting for taking in these classic films on a big screen, and the series enjoys support from local sponsors, including restaurant partnerships which will provide incentive for staying in Ellenville for discounted dining at one of Ellenville’s many wonderful restaurants around the corner from The Studio. The series continues on April 10 with The Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney, the first public performance of a new reconstruction of the silent film classic based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel. The film was originally released in 1925 and was rereleased in both silent and adapted-sound versions in 1930. Shadowland’s presentation is the first reconstruction of the original version using the best surviving elements from both releases, including the Bal Masque sequence originally photographed in

Salter for Universal’s classic horror films, as well as music from Gounod’s Faust. Shadowland board member Ray Faiola, who has assembled the series and produced the reconstruction, will be on hand for a Q&A period after the feature. On April 24 see H.G. Wells’ science fiction classic Things to Come. Produced by Alexander Korda in 1936 and directed by William Cameron Menzies, it stars Raymond Massey, Ralph Richardson and Cedric Hardwicke in a century-spanning epic about the fall and rise of civilization in the face of seemingly endless wars, famine and, ultimately, the quest to conquer space. In addition to the technical

marvels achieved only a few years after the dawn of talking pictures, Things to Come features a stirring musical score by Arthur Bliss. The last film in the series, presented on May Day (May 1) will be Salt of the Earth, a 1954 independent drama produced and directed by Herbert Biberman (one of the ten Hollywood professionals sent to prison on charges of contempt of Congress before the House Sub-Committee on UnAmerican Activities). The film, starring Will Geer, deals with the struggle of immigrant miners and their quest for equity and parity with Anglo workers. Added to the National Film Registry in 1992, the film was condemned at the time of its release by the United States House of Representatives for its (supposed) communist sympathies. “I’m running two shorts with SALT,” explained Faiola. “One is The House I

Live In written by Albert Maltz (one of the ten) and the other is The Hollywood Ten, a 1951 two-reeler in which the ten are introduced. A great Sinatra stars in book on the HUAC “The House I Live In” era is Odd Man Out: A Memoir of the Hollywood Ten by Edward Dmytryk.” The House I Live In is a 10-minute short film produced by Frank Ross and Mervyn LeRoy, and starring Frank Sinatra. Made to oppose anti-Semitism at the end of World War II, it received an Honorary Academy Award and a special Golden Globe Award in 1946. Each of the presentations will include a short subject from the same period as the showcase feature. All screenings are at 2:00pm and take place at The Studio at Shadowland Stages, 14 Market Street (corner of Center Street) in Ellenville. Tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.ShadowlandStages.org or at the door.

Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination and masks are required. Additional information on the vaccination requirements and safety protocols may be found at ShadowlandStages.org/faqs/.
