Winter season full of excitement Long winter ends with state champions, optimism for the future and the end of careers

T

he wild, crazy month of March and state tournaments has turned to April and anticipation for the outdoor sports, yet this is a good time to reflect on the cold winter months, which were warmed by the performances of special high-school teams and athletes in southern Minnesota. When Minnie Frederick arrived at Mankato East in 2010, the girls basketball program was a mess, having posted only 22 victories in the previous four seasons. But the bubbly, energetic point guard, along with emerging young talent in the program, allowed the Cougars to win two Big Nine Conference championships and reach the s e c t i o n championship game the last two seasons. Frederick’s style will have a lasting effect on the program, which has transformed from a half-court offense to a full-court, pressure style. East/Loyola hockey star Savannah Quandt was a key player in the Cougars’ most successful season, and she has fulfilled a dream of signing with her hometown Minnesota State University to continue her hockey career. By the time she is done playing, she will have called All Seasons Arena her hockey home for a full decade. Each year since 1960, Maple River and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, in some form of the various communities, have gotten together for an important boys basketball game, with the winner getting to hold onto the Brown Jug. This trophy game began as a source of joy for the winning school, and 54 years later, it holds the same intensity today. Carlie Wagner of New RichlandHartland-Ellendale-Geneva had her

coming out party last spring when she set state-tournament scoring records and helped her team finish third in Class AA. This season, the junior point guard was even more dominant as the Panthers returned to the state tournament, where she broke her own scoring records and led the Panthers to a state championship. In January, she announced that she will attend the University of Minnesota, verbally committing to a scholarship that she’ll officially accept in the fall. The Mankato Loyola girls returned to the state tournament after a 31-year break, and even though the Crusaders lost their quarterfinal game, a young roster bodes well for the future of the program. Given that the bulk of the team will return next season, another state-tournament appearance would seem possible. Six local wrestlers claimed state championships, and several others brought home state medals. It was another action-packed, frenzied three days of wrestling at Xcel Energy Center. It’s nearly impossible to capture all of the accomplishments of local teams and athletes who have excelled at their craft and entertained the crowds all winter. But the vast number of memories and highlights prove how lucky we are to witness this action. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy this second installment of Final Buzzer, as captured by our words, our designs and Pat Christman’s camera. The athletes did the work; you get the reward.

Mankato East/Loyola senior Savannah Quandt won’t be going far to compete as a college hockey player as she’s chosen Minnesota State.

hen her career finally ends, Savannah Quandt might be the hockey player who has played more games in All Seasons Arena than any one else in Mankato. Quandt just wrapped up her sixth and final varsity season with the Mankato East/ Loyola girls team. Up next, a chance to play for Minnesota State University, which currently uses the same rink for practices and games. “I like playing there,” Quandt said. “I practically live there in the winter.” Since before she started skating for the Cougars as a seventh-grader, Quandt wanted to play for the Mavericks. And that dream didn’t change as she started her outstanding high school career. Following her sophomore season, she verbally committed to Minnesota State, announcing to suitors from other college programs that they can stop recruiting her because she would be staying home come 2013. “I grew up watching them,” she said. “All the girls in the Cities watch the Gophers, and they’re their idols. But I grew up watching the Mavericks.

I’m really excited about next year. I want it to come right now.” Quandt was a highscoring forward for the first part of her career, but moved to defense — the position she’ll likely play at MSU, according to Mavericks coach Eric Means — the last two seasons.

ment, that was a long way from Quandt’s first two of years of high school hockey when East/Loyola won a total of just seven games. Quandt broke her right wrist in the final game of the regular season this year and had to play with a restrictive cast in the playoffs. “I definitely would have been able to shoot a lot better,” she said of the injury. “Oh well. I tried my best, I guess.” Now, Quandt is hoping she can assist in the improvement of another team — a tougher task at the Division I college level. “I definitely want to be a helper in the turnaround of the program,” she said. “That would be awesome.”

hen Minnie Frederick first moved to Mankato in the summer before her sophomore season at Mankato East, she went to an open gym to play basketball with and meet some of her new teammates. Her older brother Stephone, Jr., had played at East, and her cousin Martin Frederick knew many of the girls in the basketball program. But it was still a little nerve-racking for the new girl, hoping to break in with a group of players who had played a lot of basketball growing up together. “I was kind of a shy girl,” Frederick said. “So I went to open gym in the summer. I think they thought I was going to be a fat, chubby kid with no basketball experience, maybe with an attitude problem. “When I got there, they looked kind of surprised. Once I talked with them, and they got to know me, we all became very close.” Frederick finished an impressive three-year career at East last month, setting school records and helping her team return to the program to the success it had during the 1980s and ’90s. She was a finalist for

the state’s Miss Basketball award, leading the Cougars to a pair of Big Nine Conference championships. More than the awards, however, Frederick has helped to transform the program from a slow, halfcourt style to an up-tempo, fun brand of basketball.

“At our first practice, you could see what Minnie could do for our team,” East coach Mike Barger said. “She fit in right away. She was kind of a jokester, and she has a personality that draws you in.” Frederick grew up in Flint, Mich., and it wasn’t until her parents divorced that she considered spending her highschool years anywhere else.

Her dad, Stephone, Sr., moved to Mankato, but she stayed in Michigan with her mother, Marjai, until after her freshman season. “When my brother was here, he told me that he had a lot of fun,” Frederick said. Four years ago, the Cougars didn’t have many ball-handlers, so opponents would press a lot. When East got into the halfcourt, the possessions were focused on getting the ball into the post, hoping 50 points would be enough to win the game. This season, the Cougars averaged 62.8 points, about 20 more per game, in large part because of Frederick’s ability to push the ball up the court, resulting in a layup for her or a pass to an open teammate, maybe a 3-pointer or a post basket. “One of the things we always talk about is you better be ready for a pass,” said junior post Claire Ziegler, a 1,000point scorer who has benefited from a lot of Frederick’s assists. “She knows you’re going to be open before you know you’re open.” Frederick was more of a scorer as a sophomore, but as

Frederick wasn’t sure she’d fit in with the other basketball players at Mankato East, but her outgoing, bubbly personality allowed her to make friends fast. she’s learned to trust her teammates, she’s been more willing to pass. This season, Frederick averaged 11.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 9.8 assists, struggling with an ankle injury early in the season and another one in the final two weeks. She had 139 steals. As a junior, Frederick set a school record with 17 assists in a game, but this season, she dazzled the Austin defense with 18 assists. “She’s a true point guard,” Barger said. “She’s passed up a lot of shots to get other people involved. She’s grown into a leader, on and off the court.” Frederick ended her career with 772 assists, fourth most in state history, and bested the school record by 246 assists — a number that may never again be challenged. She had

three of the top eight singleseason totals in state history. She’s also scored 1,036 points, which ranks 12th at Mankato East. “The only regret I have is that I tried to make that layup (on the final shot of the section championship game) instead of passing to Abby (Connell) to shoot the 3,” Frederick said. Frederick will be returning to Michigan for her college career, signing with Division I Detroit Mercy, but she’s had a lasting effect on the program, which no longer will play a slow-down, halfcourt style. She hopes to study child development because she enjoys watching kids take some information and grow in their skills and confidence. That started this season as the younger point guards

watched Frederick to get some tips on the position. “I love it that some girls looked up to me,” she said. “That means I’m doing something right, and I want to help them. It’s a nice way to give back to the program. “Every single person at East has played an important part in my high-school career, from my teammates to the teachers and coaches. They’ve all helped me through the tough times.” Barger appreciates what Frederick has meant to his program, both on the court and as a mentor for the future point guards. If Frederick had never shown up here, it’s impossible to say how much success the Cougars would have achieved in the last three seasons. “I know we wouldn’t be scoring 60 points a game

without Minnie,” Barger said. “It’s a style that kids love to play, and I think we have some athletic kids in the program. The younger kids have been able to watch how Minnie does things, and that’s the way they’ll play.”

The other Little Brown Jug Annual rivalry game dates back more than 50 years

Back in 1960, Garden City High School played Amboy High School in a boys basketball game, and the Brown Jug became the trophy for the series. Garden City won that first game 66-49, setting in motion an annual game that still keeps the interest of those communities today. In 1969, Vernon Center, Rapidan and Garden City consolidated into Wellcome Memorial, and Amboy and Good Thunder were joined as the series continued. By 1987, Mapleton-AmboyGood Thunder was playing against Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, and two years later, MAGT became Maple River. In its current format of Maple River vs. Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, Maple River has had ownership of that treasured piece of ceramic after 19 of 24 seasons. The Knights claimed the Jug last season, ending a sixyear losing streak and providing a lot of motivation

for the Maple River players to gain back the trophy for its showcase at the Mapleton school. It was a loud, large crowd that filled the gym in Lake Crystal on Jan. 18, split pretty evenly to root for their respective teams. The Eagles used a 19-6 run late in the first half to lead by 11 at halftime. The game re m a i n e d close until the last four minutes, when Maple River finished on a 13-1 run for a 69-49 victory. Jaron Denn was Maple River’s top scorer with 19 points, and he added 10 rebounds. Ben

Jug series for Maple River. “When you lose it, you want it back.” The Jug series will face a challenge in the future. Maple River is leaving the Valley Conference and will compete in the Gopher Conference, meaning these teams can face each other only when the nonconference schedule allows. Over the years, however, the series has thrived, despite the challenges.

Loyola marks program turnaround with trip to state tournament By Chad Courrier It was just a couple of seasons ago, that the Mankato Loyola girls basketball team went winless. However, a young roster, mixed with some key veterans, began to blossom this season, winning 12 of the first 13 games. As the success helped to build momentum, the Crusaders reeled off nine straight wins to push their record to 21-2, winning the Valley Conference regular-season and Showcase titles. Even though the regular season ended with a loss, the

Crusaders rebounded with four straight postseason victories, downing Lester Prairie/ Holy Trinity 47-36 in the section championship game to earn the first state tournament berth for the program in 31 seasons. The Crusaders lost to WinE-Mac in the state quarterfinals at Williams Arena, but with only three seniors on the roster, it seems likely that Loyola will have several chances to return to state competition in the near future.

A nice run

Senior group helped turn East/Loyola from pushover to force in Big Nine Conference By Shane Frederick The season began with a win. Then there was another and another and another until 10 in a row were rattled off by the Mankato East/Loyola girls hockey team. For coach Nate Fuller and several of the Cougars’ players, they could recall entire years that didn’t end with doubledigit wins. They remember four- and three- and nine-win seasons before they began to figure things out, before they turned things around, before they learned how to win. The Cougars didn’t reach their ultimate goal of getting to the state tournament this past year. They ended the year with their first Big Nine championship and a team-record 22 wins

(they finished 22-6-0) before losing to Mound Westonka/ Watertown-Mayer 3-2 in the Section 2A championship game. Three seniors were on that four-win team as seventh-graders. Four more from that class joined up the following year when East/Loyola won just three games. “To go through all those years and get better working together, it’s amazing what we’ve done,” leading scorer Maddie McCargar said after her final high school hockey game. “Twenty-two wins is not something to be ashamed of. Twenty-three is what we wanted. We worked our hearts out.” Forwards McCargar and

Rebekah Kolstad finished the season, including playoffs, with 55 points apiece. Kolstad, a sophomore, scored 30 goals, while McCargar, a senior, had 29 goals. Senior defenseman Savannah Quandt had 17 goals and 37 points and was named third-team All-State by The Associated Press. In 28 games, the Cougars more than doubled up their opponents’ goals, outscoring them 135-66. That’s a far, far cry from five seasons ago.

State Champs Young New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva team has shot at another Class AA championship in 2014 By Chad Courrier If you thought that Carlie Wagner and the New RichlandHartland-Ellendale -Geneva girls basketball team were good when you saw them in the 2012 Class AA tournament, you must have been more impressed by what they accomplished this season, winning 29 of 30 games. Wagner, who scored more than 1,000 points this season,

tallied 129 points in three tournament games, breaking her own scoring record, and she ended the event with a tournament record 50 points as the Panthers downed Braham to win the program’s first state championship. Nov. 13 — Longtime Mankato East girls swimming and diving coach Tim Johnson announces Tim his retirement after 34 years. Although Johnson he is retiring from the girls duties, he said he plans to continue coaching the boys team a couple more years.

Cougar girls get some revenge in hockey

Nov. 16 — The Mankato East/ Loyola girls hockey team defeats Hutchinson 9-0 in a rematch of last season’s section semifinals.

Mankato West wins at buzzer

Dec. 4 — Freshman Jake Dale, making his first varsity start, Jake scores off an inbounds Dale pass with two seconds remaining as Mankato West defeats Hutchinson 59-58 at the West gym.

Jakes repeats at Redwood Valley

Dec. 15 — For the second straight season, Mankato West senior Tyler Jakes Tyler won the 195-pound Jakes weight class at the Redwood Valley tournament.

East/Loyola girls off to best start ever

Dec. 18 — The Mankato East/ Loyola girls hockey team extends the best start in program history, winning its 10th straight game with a 6-4 decision against Albert Lea.

Wagner breaks 2,000

Dec. 29 — Carlie Wagner, a junior at New RichlandHartland-Ellendale-Geneva scores the 2,000th point of her basketball career in a 58-51 victory over Bemidji in the championship game of the St. Peter tournament.

Maple River wins Bethany tournament

Dec. 29 — The Maple River boys basketball team defeats Fairmont 66-62 to win the championship of the Pepsi Holiday Tournament, which was played at Bethany Lutheran College.

USC’s Allis sets block record in triple-double

Jan. 5 — United South Central’s Amanda Allis had a triple-double in a girls basketball game against Tri-City United. Allis set a schoolrecord with 13 blocked shots to go with 15 points and 11

rebounds. It was Allis’ third career triple-double, the only three in program history.

West boys, girls win Wuk Fut ski meet

Jan. 8 — Mankato West won both the boys and girls events at the annual Wuk Fut ski meet at Mount Kato. West’s David Huggins was the boys individual winner with a combined time of 44.31, while Caitlin Clause of Mankato East/Loyola won the girls race at 47.42.

Miller sets Waseca girls hockey record

Jan. 10 — Brittany Miller of the Waseca girls hockey team set a program record with eight points in a 13-3 victory over Windom. She had five assists, and joined teammates Taryn Juberien and Abbe Hoehn with hat tricks in the victory.

Maple River celebrates state title anniversary

Jan. 18 — The Maple River boys basketball program celebrates the 20th anniversary of

West girls earn berth at state ski meet

Feb. 5 — The Mankato West girls Alpine ski team advances to the state meet for the second time in program history by placing second at the Section 6 meet at Buck Hill. West’s Kelsey Klingel takes seventh with a combined time of 50.97. Mankato East/Loyola’s Caitlin Clause qualifies for the state meet Caitlin for the third time, and Clause Mankato West’s David Huggins qualifies for the boys meet for the second time.

Loyola guard makes eight 3-pointers

Feb. 7 — Mankato Loyola’s Lindsey Theuninck makes eight 3-pointers and scores 32 points. She also had 12 rebounds and four steals. The Mankato Loyola boys basketball team celebrates their title in 2003.

Feb. 8 — Waseca clinches the South Central Conference girls basketball championship with a 64-61 victory over St. Peter, completing the season sweep.

Loyola girls win Valley Conference title

girls basketball team wins the Valley Conference championship by defeating Martin County West 58-52 in the final game of the Valley Showcase.

Cougar girls fall in section title game

Feb. 14 — Mankato East/ Loyola loses 3-2 to MoundWestonka in the championship game of the Section 2A girls hockey tournament at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Maple River boys win Valley Conference

Feb. 14 — Maple River defeats Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 84-74 to win the Valley Conference boys basketball championship at Mapleton.

Sibley East wrestlers advance to state

Feb. 16 — Sibley East defeats Windom/Mountain Lake 38-23 to win the Section 4A wrestling championship.

West’s Deatley places at state gymnastics

Feb. 23 — Mankato West freshman Miranda Deatley places 16th on the balance beam at the Class A gymnastics meet, held at the University of Minnesota. She scored 9.1 in

her first trip to state.

Sibley East wrestlers take fourth at state

Feb. 28 — Sibley East finishes fourth at the Class A wrestling meet, but upset No. 3-seeded Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 30-24 in the opening round.

Schultze earns all-state swimming honors

March 2 — Mankato East/ Loyola senior Bobby Schultze finishes eighth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.65, earning all-state honors. He also finishes ninth in the 100 butterfly and joined Jack Adams, Brett Petersen and Cory Kriesel to place 12th in both the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.

East/Loyola boys hockey coach resigns

March 4 — Aaron Anderson resigns as the Mankato East/ Loyola boys hockey coach after five seasons. He will continue to coach the girls golf team.

Loyola girls advance to state tournament

March 8 — Mankato Loyola defeats Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 47-36 for the Section A girls basketball championship.
