Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles

Directed by Max Lewkowicz | USA | 2019 | 90 minutes Fiddler chronicles the life and themes of the iconic offering of American culture. It shares the origin story behind one of Broadway's most beloved musicals, Fiddler on the Roof, and its creative roots in early 1960s New York, when "tradition" was on the wane as gender roles, sexuality, race relations and religion were evolving. For the first time, intimate interviews with the show's creators reveal how the tremendous success and worldwide impact of Fiddler and its subsequent film adaptation is most appropriately viewed through the lens of the social upheaval and change in mid-20th century America.

David’s Tower by Viviana Tagar

Isaac Brynjegard-Bialik Paper Midrash

Julianne Kelley The Secret Life of Trees

Artist Isaac Brynjegard-Bialik cuts up comic books and reassembles them into work made of clean lines and patterns, sinuous shapes and sharp edges, large fields of color and small intimate spaces. The art begins with text and is influenced by elements of the natural world and how tradition understands its connection to the Divine. Brynjegard-Bialik draws parallels between comic book mythologies and religious traditions to delve into the stories that make us human.

We are only just beginning to understand and appreciate the secret life of trees. Trees or people, we are all in it together. Trees live in community with each other, and with their environment. So do human beings. An exhibit to coincide with the holiday of Tu B’Shevat, artist Julianne Kelley expresses and shows the web of connections and relationships among humans and non-humans. A walk in the woods is a reminder that none of us walks alone.

75 Since ’45: Liberation and the Postwar Era with Dr. Hanna Yablonka of Ben-Gurion University February 9–23, 2020

The war was over on May 8, 1945, but what lies between V-E Day and Liberation? Where does the Holocaust really end, and how and why did it become an epoch changing event? This series will dwell on “the day after” from the Jewish perspective and no less from the human perspective. We will ask and answer questions of historical, ethical, judicial and social nature, weaving in memory, commemoration and narratives. A major focus will be on the survivors of the Holocaust and their inspiring decisions, actions and lessons in the 75 years since liberation. Dr. Hanna Yablonka teaches in the History Department at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and was also the founder and Chair of their Israel Studies Department. Her research has focused on the cultural and social impact of the Shoah (Holocaust) on Israeli society, and she has authored and edited many articles and books on these subjects. Rewriting Our Past: Sin, Repentance & Forgiveness Rabbi David Segal

From Prosaic to Prophetic: Gleanings from High Holiday Biblical Readings Ms. Nancy Pryzant Picus

The prayers of the High Holidays invite us to imagine God as the Divine Author, inscribing us in the Book of Life–or omitting us–for the coming year. How can we turn this image on ourselves, to become better "authors" of our own lives, rewriting our past in order to write a better future? Biblical, rabbinic and modern texts will guide us.

In this class, we will use High Holiday Torah and Haftarah readings to explore how these carefully chosen texts illuminate holiday rituals, emphasize holiday themes, and deepen our connections to the awe and splendor of the Ten Days of Repentance.

The Noble Life Rabbi Barry Gelman As we prepare ourselves for the High Holidays, come and learn about four traits to make tomorrow better than today: modesty, loving-kindness, contentedness, and love. We will define these characteristics, study how to acquire them and consider how to apply them in our lives.

High Holiday Prayers That Uplift & Inspire Me (And Some That Surprisingly Do Neither!) Rabbi David Rosen With so many prayers in the Mahzor (High Holiday prayer book), it’s sometimes hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. Let Rabbi Rosen walk you through some of the prayers that he feels have the power to genuinely move us spiritually–as well as some we might do better skipping.

African American-Jewish Relations: Race, Religion, Politics and Pop Culture

Conquest & Settlement, Heroes & Villains: The Books of Joshua and Judges

This course examines African American-Jewish relations in the United States from colonial times to the present day. How and why do the experiences, achievements and struggles of these two groups overlap and parallel, and how and why do they conflict and diverge? How does Sammy Davis, Jr. each group perceive itself in relation to the other? How do Jews of color experience this divide? We will attempt to answer these and other questions with the aid of primary source documents, films, music, memoirs and works of history and ethnography.

While our Jewish foundational stories may be familiar from religious school and weekly Torah portions, the story of the Israelites after their forty years of wandering is less well-known. Using the biblical books of Joshua and Judges, this course will be a brief survey of the fascinating period of Jewish history that begins with entering the Promised Land and ends with the rise of King Saul.

While contemporary medical knowledge preserves life, modern advances have raised moral and ethical dilemmas related to the sanctity and dignity of life— issues whose scope was unimaginable a generation ago. Written by Rabbi Elliot Dorff, PhD, this course explores Jewish approaches to a number of 21st century ethical issues, including human cloning, surrogate motherhood, transsexual surgery, assisted suicide and genetic manipulation.

Jews of Germany

Laugh & Lament: Humor in Modern Jewish Literature

Rabbi David Segal | 10 Sessions @ Congregation Emanu El Mondays, 9:30 AM–10:30 AM September 9–December 16, 2019 In the 2013 Pew survey of Jewish Americans, 42% of Jews said that “having a good sense of humor” is essential to their Jewish identity. Through recent scholarship as well as a selection of short stories by modern Israeli and American Jewish authors, we will explore and challenge this idea. What is the function of Jewish laughter, if not simply to entertain? What darkness does Jewish humor highlight or hide? And, finally, how have the dynamics of Jewish humor evolved over time?

The Men and Women of the Talmud Rabbi Annie Belford | 8 Sessions @ Temple Sinai Wednesdays, 9:30 AM–10:30 AM January 22– March 11, 2020

The Talmud is known for being a groundbreaking collection of laws and stories from ancient times. It is also filled with the voices and opinions of hundreds of different rabbis, as well as some notable women. But who were these characters? What were their lives actually like, and what can we learn not only about them, but also from them? This course will explore Rebecca’s life and legacy as conveyed in the Book of Genesis and commentaries. Who was this second matriarch? A girl from "the other side of the tracks" who was chosen to be the bride of Isaac, the Golden Boy, son of elderly parents, the famous Abraham and Sarah. Let us follow her footsteps as she forges her own path in Jewish history. She is the only woman in the Tanach who went "to inquire of God" and received a prophecy that she never shared with anyone else. The end result leads to the creation and emergence of two distinct, different nations that continue to live on and thrive throughout world history until this very day.

Annual Fund

This is Hailey's Story Tell us your J story at erjcchouston.org/MyJStory

The J is one big community. It’s warm and welcoming, a place where you can have fun, spend time with friends and make new friends. I think of the J as a really big friend and a connector. I can go to theatre class with a few people I know and then go to a pottery class with a few different people I know. Then, of course, there are always many more people I can meet. You also don’t have to go to a class to meet people. You can sit in the lobby and just see people you know or meet new people. At the J, you meet people in unexpected places, and there is always someone there for you. For me personally, I have come to have my theatre family inside the J. We are all friends across ages, everyone is accepting and friendly and there is a trust and friendship that brings people together.
