Historic Masonic demolished under plastic wrapping The historic Masonic Tavern has been largely demolished with some of its Kauri boards recently sold at a timber recycling yard on Archers Rd, Glenfield. A peek behind the white plastic wrapped tightly around the main tavern building construction site reveals that little is left of

what was once one of Devonport’s oldest heritage treasures. The facades on Church St and King Edward Parade are gone, the roof is off and there is hardly any flooring to speak of. Some locals now fear a replica rather than a restoration will be the end result

of the controversial development, which community groups Save the Masonic and Devonport Heritage fought all the way to the Environment Court in 2011, without success. Devonport architect David Loughlin says a site worker told him the decision to demolTo page 7
