editor's LETTER

Leave it to the Pros Don't be a DIY Disaster

I love Pinterest as much as the next girl, but I also know there is a major limit to my sewing, crafting and styling abilities. A recent holiday get-together made me realize just how limited these said abilities are. We were having family and friends over and I had been happily "pinning" all of the fun food creations and décor I wanted to try. Lucky for me, my first attempt, which I ruined, wasn’t too expensive and I tried it a week before our party. The photo

online and tutorial looked easy enough, but unfortunately for me, the Crock-Pot orange chicken turned out to be more like chicken jerky in orange soup (if you’ve seen that recipe floating around, don’t try it!).

True story: When I got married, someone told me, “Leave it to the pros, they’ll do it better than you ever could.” So when it came time for the meeting with our florist – I decided to take the advice. I simply gave her our color palette and the flowers we didn’t like and told her to have fun…she had total creative freedom. The day of our wedding, when I saw my bouquet and ceremony set-up, I cried happy tears. If I had instructed every detail, those flowers never would have been as beautiful as what she delivered. In the end, keep two things in mind: know your own DIY limitations and leave it to the pros. Speaking of pros, we have a great "Ask the Expert" article this issue with the one and only, Colin Cowie (page 44). We also have three gorgeous photo shoots for those of you who are looking for inspiration – be it on land or at sea (page 46). And for those of you who are trying to get from point A to point B without offending anyone – our travel taboo article about etiquette

Next were the party favors. I realized once I got to the fabric store that the pretty little fabric boxes cost more to make than the gifts themselves. Idea number two, also a bust.

abroad is a must read (page 90). Now, go enjoy your wedding planning, pin away and for goodness sake, avoid burlap!

And finally was the table décor – let’s just say there is a large population out there that is very allergic to burlap and leave it at that, shall we?

Yours Truly, Jennifer Stein

What’s my point? My point is that many of these gorgeous ideas floating out there are often executed by the pros. Especially when it comes to weddings. Are you a florist? My guess would be no. Are you a décor and lighting specialist? Probably not. DIY has been an ongoing craze for some time now and, although we love all the personalized details, much of what you see in magazines and on Pinterest was done by professionals. Please don’t misunderstand, if you’ve got mad skills in the do-it-yourself department, then by all means – have a heyday. Just know what you’re capable of.

Pinterest: pinterest.com/destinationido

If you’re like me though, perhaps hand the inspiration off to someone who can actually achieve it. Also, keep something in mind…you chose that photographer or wedding planner because you like their style, right? So give them a little creative freedom.

How many times in your life do you get the chance to truly get away from it all? For most people, not many. If you've never gotten the chance to visit a place where cell phones are rendered virtually useless, there isn't a neighbor as far as the eye can see and there are more horses than people — you're missing out. There's something truly romantic and exhilarating about feeling totally removed from everyday life, making the lovely and isolated Ranch at Rock Creek an ideal option for your destination wedding or honeymoon.

ROMANTIC Rancho Santa Fe, California

Words by Courtney Cox

We recently discovered a California hot-spot in the form of Rancho Santa Fe. Known for being a private, luxurious locale 30 minutes north of San Diego, it’s the perfect alternative for a destination wedding couple who doesn’t require a beach within walking distance. Having been to San Diego countless times, I found the quiet, rolling hills of Rancho Santa Fe a welcome change of scenery. For a true experience of laid-back luxury, the Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa is a beautiful option. Each of the 49 rooms has its own private patio with hot tub, an in-room fireplace, expansive steam shower and walk-in closet. The Spanish, ranch-style architecture is cozy with high beamed ceilings, large rooms and hand-painted tiles. If you have a small destination wedding party, we strongly suggest looking into Rancho Valencia’s La Hacienda suite. The three-bedroom home is located on property, but offers another level of privacy and comfort. It is the equivalent of renting a private home for your wedding, but with all the services and amenities of a hotel. A ceremony in La Hacienda’s backyard is the epitome of exclusivity and can accommodate up to 60 people.

22

Rancho Valencia encourages guests to take advantage of the many world-class activities offered. Take a tennis lesson with former U.S. Open Doubles Champion, Robin White, and improve both your backhand and abs with lots of laughs thanks to this sassy instructor. In addition to impressive tennis courts, the resort also has a breathtaking indoor/outdoor yoga pavilion and both spin and pilates studios. After all the activity, stop by the spa for a Sixth Sense Ritual massage which includes a soak in an outdoor cast-iron tub, scalp massage and paraffin treatment. Delight in coastal-ranch cuisine by Executive Chef Eric Bauer at the beautiful Veladora restaurant, or more casual fare at the laid-back Pony Room. When it comes to food, virtually everything is made in-house at Rancho Valencia. From smoked meats and fresh pastas, to breads and stocks, it’s all fresh and delicious. To cap-off your wedding experience, request a tasting lesson with Sommelier Jayson Knack. With over 600 wines to choose from, it will be both an educational and beautiful experience in the resort’s Wine Room. For luxurious accommodations with a laid-back vibe, Rancho Valencia is the perfect option.

The Bay Area doesn’t have a bad angle, and the truth is, there aren’t many places I can say that about. The best part about living here? You can be somewhere glorious in under an hour. SEVEN LUCKY WAYS TO SAY

Las Vegas is the flagship destination for weddings away. With plenty of wedding chapels and simple marriage requirements, they make it pretty easy to tie-the-knot. What you may associate Vegas with is fun, gambling and that old adage, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” But what you may not realize is the upscale destination wedding options are endless in this party town. Here are seven lucky ways to say “I do.”

CRYSTAL COAST Words by Courtney Cox

Whether you're a fan of Nicholas Sparks-type romance, or a lover of dune-laced beaches, the Crystal Coast just might be your dream come true. More than just a pretty face, its history ranges from Spanish explorers in the 1500s and famous pirates like Blackbeard himself, to Civil War battle sites. Located in the southern Outerbanks of North Carolina, the Crystal Coast has plenty to offer in the way of destination weddings and honeymoons. The location boasts Southern-facing beaches, meaning you get both glowing sunrises and sunsets over the water. Arguably two of the most important must-haves in choosing where to honeymoon or wed away is a beautiful destination and plenty of things to do – both of which you can find here. 28

Rhode Island may be known as the smallest state in the U.S., but it packs an enormous amount of diversity, historical charm and beauty within its borders. LOVE ILLUMINATED IN

ST. KITTS

Romance seekers looking to canoodle under a ribbon of clear blue skies and sink their toes in diamond-dusted sands will adore St. Kitts. While daylight illuminates the island’s considerable natural assets, it is in the deep dark of night when St. Kitts is truly lit for love. Artist Rosey Cameron Smith recalls crying the first time she saw the night sky when she moved to the island from Scotland 35 years ago. “You just lie down on the beach and the moon comes up right plump in the middle of the sky over the ocean,” says Smith.

Being a busy mom of a toddler and the editor of a magazine, it’s not often I’m able to escape these days to research destinations for each issue. I made an exception after visiting the website for Capella Pedregal. If it was half as good as it looked online, I’d be in for a treat. Turns out, it was more than a treat, it was tremendous.

We were given a general overview of the property by one of the smiling staff members the minute we arrived. He showed us the stunning resort complete with infinity pools appearing to extend straight into the Pacific Ocean, immaculately kept grounds and whimsical touches such as star lanterns and brightly colored glass hearts hanging like ornaments from selected trees. When we made our way to our ocean-front suite, we were unprepared for the beauty and splendor which awaited us. The ocean waves were crashing just 50 yards from the bedroom and the private (heated) plunge pool, perfectly placed hammock and fire pit were just begging for our attention. Inside the room with doors opening up to meet the private plunge pool was a lavishly

THE E XPERT Words by Carolyn Gerin

Colin Cowie is misunderstood: People are dazzled by his celebrity wedding planner prowess (J-Lo, Jennifer Aniston) and his position as an international thought leader, tastemaker and author. Yes, he’s all of those things, but the wow factor for us is his down-to-earth quality: that intangible gift not all wedding planners have – he’s a filter for his couples' signature style which makes his signature style all the more special and relevant.

We believe dreams do come true. We believe great style does not have a high price tag. We believe planning a wedding should be fun. We believe there should be magic…

I arrived to the hustle and bustle of market day in Casablanca, Morocco and began the two-hour drive to Marrakesh. One of four imperial cities of Morocco, Marrakesh rises out of the landscape like an intricate, red-tinged mirage. My home here was the lovely La Maison Arabe, located just inside the medina. The medina, a staple of imperial cities, is surrounded by walls dating back to the 12th century and is the epicenter of action and adventure in the city. La Maison Arabe was the first boutique hotel to open up within the walls of the medina back in 1998. Since then, many have followed suit, but none have the reputation for luxurious accommodations and amazing cuisine like La Maison Arabe. After a poolside lunch under shady fig trees at the property’s quiet country club, my adventure officially began.

I’M IN HEAVEN, I’M IN FIJI Words by Courtney Cox

Fiji is the type of place every honeymooner dreams of: crystal clear waters, powder-sand beaches, friendly locals and unique cultural experiences. TRAVEL TABOOS NAVIGATING ETIQUETTE ABROAD Words by Elaine Hilbelink Illustrations by Kiana Cates

Traveling to exotic places or foreign soil can be part of the charm of your destination wedding. Different customs and standards for what is appropriate in dress and behavior vary wherever we go. Clothing, gestures, greetings and general conduct can tag you as a tourist, and we want to be respectful and respected as we journey around the World.

Q. What is the best way for me to find out the etiquette and customs of the country where we are having our wedding? How do I communicate that information to our friends and relatives who will be attending?

A. As a host, it is important for you to research what is appropriate in the country you have selected. Travel guidebooks, online searches and speaking to contacts at your venue are all effective ways to inform yourself about appropriate behavior and customs. Your personal wedding website is a great way to share what you learn with your guests so they might plan appropriate dress for the trip and be sensitive to the cultural customs in your host country. You might also include some travel tips and local customs in a hospitality bag to greet your guests in their room, or if budget permits, you may consider sending them a guidebook after you receive their RSVP.

{maui} ELENA + JEFF

Elena and Jeff have been inseparable since the moment they met and it is more than appropriate to say there were fireworks between them – considering the couple met at a Fourth of July party. When it came time to begin planning their dream destination wedding, the couple knew only one place would do: Maui, Hawaii. The groom was born and raised on the island and the two were anxious to share the “beautiful and peaceful” place with those they love the most. Deciding on the destination of Krabi, Thailand as the backdrop for Donna and Matthew’s wedding away was easier than one would think. See what happens when girls fall in love with books. In the developing world, a girl doesn’t have a lot of options. She often has to drop out of school to work or marry young due to societal pressures. But an education can change that. The longer girls stay in school, the more likely they are to earn higher wages, marry later in life, have healthier families and educate their own children. Room to Read has helped thousands of girls gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. Honor the power of education on your wedding day with a gift that changes lives. Perhaps the number-one piece of advice we give brides is to slow down and enjoy their wedding day and to not sweat the small stuff. Thankfully, North Carolina couple Jenny and Alex kept their cool after Mother Nature wasn’t willing to cooperate come W-day. What was supposed to be a beautiful, outdoor ceremony at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida was hastily moved indoors due to rain. Guests rolled with the punches and were handed glasses of Champagne as they entered a beautiful ballroom where Jenny and Alex would say “I do.” The ceremony was intimate with just 35 guests and was made all the more special because the bride’s sister-in-law officiated the union.
