Solo & Ensemble Organization Contests/Festivals The Illinois Grade School Music Association, Northern Division, is dedicated to encourage, aid, and advance music education in the elementary, middle and junior high schools of the State of Illinois. IGSMA sponsors contests among school bands, orchestras, and choruses, including solos and ensembles. The year culminates with a final organization contest/festival.
Why Become a Member? Adult professionals, dedicated to providing valuable and meaningful feedback for both students and directors, serve as adjudicators. IGSMA, Northern Division, is divided into nine districts making contest site locations convenient. Participation in IGSMA supports statewide advocacy for music education at the elementary and middle school levels. “Out of all of the activities I do with my students throughout the school year, without a doubt the most beneficial are IGSMA Solo/Ensemble Contest and Organization Contest. After a year of everything being on Zoom, including this workshop, I couldn’t be more excited to welcome you to our 8th annual live and in-person band director workshop. Like many of you, this is my rst in-person professional development such as this since the 2019 Midwest Clinic. I have really missed it! This past summer we started a massive overhaul and redesign of our band website. This project (which is still ongoing) has lead to a whole “rebranding” of our program. Beyond logos, fonts, and colors, though, the return to in-person learning has given us all an opportunity to “relaunch” various aspects of our program for the betterment of our students. Even with all of its challenges emerging from the pandemic, this is the perfect time to re ect on and evaluate our vision for our programs……and make the changes we need to realize that vision without the typical institutional inertia (sometimes of our own making) that we typically face. This workshop, quite simply, wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Illinois Grade School Music Association and the National Band Association. They’ve each provided generous nancial support and publicity that has allowed us to bring in such a distinguished panel of clinicians. Both of these organizations have been essential to my program and my professional development. They have been with this workshop since it’s beginning, and I could not be more appreciative of their continued sponsorship of this day. A big thank you to Skokie School District 73.5 and Zipporah Hightower, superintendent, for allowing us to host the workshop here again this year. Thank you for being here. CLINICIAN BIOGRAPHIES MARK HEIDEL Richard Mark Heidel is Director of Bands and Professor of Music in the School of Music at the University of Iowa where he conducts the Iowa Symphony Band, teaches graduate courses in conducting and band literature, guides the graduate band conducting program, and oversees all aspects of the University of Iowa band program. Ensembles under Dr. Heidel’s direction have performed at national, regional, and state conferences including those of the College Band Directors National Association, Music Educators National Conference, Iowa Bandmasters Association, Wisconsin Music Educators Association, Illinois Music Educators Association, and National Band Association-Wisconsin Chapter. He has also led concert tours to the Republic of Ireland and United Kingdom as well as throughout the Midwest. A native of Texas, Heidel holds the Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in Conducting from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas as well as the Doctor of Education in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His principal teachers include James F. Keene, James Sudduth, Gary Smith, Keith Bearden, Donald Schleicher, John Grashel, Eunice Boardman, Richard Tolley, and Michael Ewald. Prior to his appointment to the University of Iowa faculty in 2008, Dr. Heidel served as Director of Bands at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, and as a teaching assistant in the School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to his university teaching experiences, Heidel taught in Texas for nine years serving as Director of Bands at Muleshoe High School, Levelland High School, and Monterey High School in Lubbock. Dr. Heidel has been distinguished with memberships in numerous national and international honor societies and fraternities including Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Nu Epsilon, and Golden Key. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Musician award at Texas Tech University in both 1985 and 1986, and in 1997, he received the A. A. Harding award at the University of Illinois for the “highest possible achievement, service, and devotion to the University Bands.” In 2002, Dr. Heidel was named to the “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers,” and in 2003 and 2010 he received the Citation of Excellence from the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Band Association. In 2005, he was initiated into Sigma Alpha Iota as a National Arts Associate, and in 2008, he was elected to membership into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association. Dr. Heidel received the Collegiate Teaching Award from the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2012, and a Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association in 2016. Dr. Heidel has presented clinics and workshops at state music conferences and universities in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, and he has appeared as guest conductor and clinician in more than 30 states, Washington, D.C., and the Canadian provinces of Ontario
and Manitoba. In 2003, Heidel served as an adjudicator for the Limerick International Marching Band Competition and the 100th St. Patrick’s Day Festival in Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Heidel was the conductor of the Asia Paci c Activities Conference APAC Band in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2016, and conductor of the Association of Music in International Schools High School Honor Band in Salzburg, Austria in 2019. Heidel has two commercial compact disc recordings to his credit including TRADITION featuring live performances of the Iowa Symphony Band released by Equilibrium in 2017, and Martyrs for the Faith featuring Kenneth Tse, saxophone with the Iowa Symphony Band released by MSR Classics in 2012. Dr. Heidel currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Band Association and American Bandmasters Association, and is the State of Iowa Representative for the College Band Directors National Association as well as Past President of the Big Ten Band Directors Association. His list of more than 30 publications includes articles in the National Band Association Journal, Teaching Music, Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, and Iowa Music Educator. Dr. Heidel is Director of the Iowa Summer Music Camps, and he has taught for summer programs at the Shell Lake Arts Center (WI), Texas Tech University Band and Orchestra Camp, Illinois Summer Youth Music Program, and the International Music Camp. Heidel, an active trumpet player, frequently performs with orchestras and big bands in Iowa.
JUSTIN JOHNSON Justin Johnson serves as Director of Bands at Niles West High School (IL). In this position, he oversees the operation and administration of the program that includes the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, and Marching Band. Over the past ten years under his direction, the ensembles have been recognized for outstanding achievement to include performances at the Jazz Educators Conference (New Orleans), The Sugar Bowl Halftime, and Pearl Harbor (HI). Mr. Johnson is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. In 2016, he was named a nalist for the Golden Apple Award and named Teacher of Distinction. He was the 2020 recipient of the Zemsky Teacher of the Year award for Niles West High School, the 2020-21 Teach Plus Illinois ILSTOY Policy Fellow, and the 2021 Illinois Teacher of the Year. Mr. Johnson prides himself on creating a classroom culture focused on student growth while creating an atmosphere that cultivates accountability, responsibility, and goodwill. His voice is valuable as a fresh perspective in education and he always seeks to teach values and lessons that reach beyond the bandroom. Mr. Johnson has always been a leader in demanding equitable practices, equal access to music, and creating systemic change to promote cultural diversity in music through various initiatives and commission projects. He currently serves in several Equity and Diversity roles for the Niles Township District (IL).

Mr. Johnson’s experience in Drum Corps International (DCI) expand over a decade. Recent engagements include serving as a member of the visual staff for the DCI World Champion Bluecoats as well as the 2007 DCI Division III World Champion Memphis Sound Drum and Bugle
Corps. In addition, he has served on the staff of the United States Army All-American Marching Band from 2013-2015 and 2018. He continues his involvement in the marching arts by serving as an adjudicator and clinician for some of the nations nest marching bands, indoor drumlines, and winter guards across the United States. Mr. Johnson holds the Master of Music Education degree from Eastern Illinois University as well as a Bachelor of Music from the University of Memphis Rudi E. Schiedt School of Music. He holds professional memberships in the National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, Illinois Music Educators Association, Jazz Educators Network, and Phi Beta Mu.
CINDY LANSFORD After graduating with a degree in Music Education from Texas Tech University in 1976, Cindy Lansford began her teaching career at her alma mater, Robert E. Lee High School, in Baytown, Texas. After relocating to north Texas in 1978, she began a twelve-year stint in the Plano Independent School District, rst at Plano Senior High School followed by ten years at Carpenter Middle School. In 1991, Ms. Lansford joined the Birdville Independent School District and taught at Haltom High School. In 1996 she moved to North Ridge Middle School in the B.I.S.D. where she taught until her retirement in 2007. During her tenure at Carpenter, Ms. Lansford was named Teacher of the Year and was a recipient of the Ross Perot Excellence in Teaching Award. She was again named Teacher of the Year at North Ridge. Ms. Lansford served on the Prescribed Music List selection committee 2002-2006 and served her regions throughout the years in various leadership positions. She has been a frequent presenter at conventions for both Texas and Oklahoma Music Educators Associations. She has also been a frequent presenter at the Texas and Oklahoma Bandmasters Associations as well as through the T.B.A. Professional Development program. In 2008 Ms. Lansford received the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Texas Bandmasters Association. The bands under Ms. Lansford’s direction enjoyed much success throughout the years. Continuous achievement at U.I.L. contests, numerous festivals, as well as state recognition were the norm, and individual student accomplishments were status quo. In 2004 the North Ridge Middle School Band was awarded the prestigious Sudler Cup award presented by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to outstanding middle school bands. In 2005 the North Ridge Honors Band performed at the Fifty-Ninth Annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. In 2006 the North Ridge Band was the rst middle school band program to be recognized by the Texas Bandmasters Association as “An Exemplary Program.”

The 2007-2008 school year marked the rst year of retirement from a public school position for Ms. Lansford, and she started her second “career” do-ing freelance work as a consultant, clinician, mentor, adjudicator and teacher. She has been in contact with hundreds of teachers and thousands of students through region and all state bands and band camps stretching from Alaska to Georgia. She also works one-on-one with individual programs and teachers. Ms. Lansford’s professional af liations include Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music
Educators Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and she is past president of Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, the International Bandmasters Fraternity. She is currently serving on the Executive Board of Phi Beta Mu International. Ms. Lansford was recently inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Hall of Fame in Texas.
CHRIS GRIFA Chris Grifa has been teaching since 2004 and is beginning his tenthyear teaching in the Carmel school system in Indiana. He is currently the director of Bands at Clay Middle School and was previously at Creekside Middle School. The Creekside Wind Symphony was honored to perform a concert at the 2013 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, while additionally serving as the rehearsal lab band for Ms. Linda Gammon. The Creekside Wind Symphony also performed at the 2013 Indiana Music Education Association Conference. Mr. Grifa’s bands have consistently earned Gold and Superior ratings in Indiana as well as Best in Class and Overall Grand Champion awards in the Chicago
and Cincinnati areas.
Mr. Grifa has served as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator for for concert bands and marching bands across the country. Additionally, he has presented clinics at numerous state music conferences. He will present the session “Teaching Deliberate Practice: The Missing Fundamental” at the 2019 Midwest Clinic and previously presented the session “Achieving Your Ensemble Sound: It’s Fundamental!” at the 2015 Midwest Clinic. Mr. Grifa has written several articles that have been published in The Instrumentalist Magazine as well as wrote an entry for the “Conductor’s Companion: 100 rehearsal Techniques, Imaginative ideas, Quotes and Facts,” a book published in 2016 by Meredith Music and compiled by Gary Stith. In 2016, Mr. Grifa joined the Conn-Selmer Division of Education team as an Educational Clinician. He had the honor of serving on the Music For All Summer Symposium faculty as a director of the middle school concert band track in 2019. Besides teaching middle school band, Mr. Grifa has been heavily involved with high school marching band and drum and bugle corps. He is currently on staff with the Carmel High School Marching Band, which won its fth Bands of America Grand National Championship in 2018. In 2000 and 2002, Mr. Grifa was a member of the World Champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps and served on the brass staff for both the Cadets (2007-2009) and the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps (2005-2006). Mr. Grifa received his bachelor’s degree in music education and minor in trombone performance from Old Dominion University located in Norfolk, VA and his Master of Music Education degree from the University of Florida. While at Old Dominion, Mr. Grifa had the pleasure of being a member of the Virginia Wind Symphony under the direction of Mr. Dennis Zeisler, which performed at the Midwest Clinic in 2004.

Chip De Stefano received both his Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance and Master of Music Education Degrees from Northwestern University. While at Northwestern, he studied conducting with John P. Paynter, Steve Peterson, and Don Owens, trombone with Frank Crisafulli and Art Linsner, and music education with Bennett Reimer, Donald Casey, Jim Kjelland, and Peter Webster. Mr. De Stefano was director of the Northwestern University Basketball Band (1994-1996) and the University Jazz Lab Band (1995-1996). In addition to these responsibilities, he assisted with all the of ce of band s performing organizations and had conducting appearances with the wind ensemble, symphonic band, trombone ensemble, and marching band. Mr. De Stefano is currently in his 26th year as Director of Bands at McCracken Middle School in Skokie, Illinois. Under his direction, the McCracken Middle School Symphonic Band has received rst division ratings at all district and state organization contests of the Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA) and has made multiple appearances at the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) All-State Conference, University of Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival (named honor band 8 times), and NAfME North Central Division Conference. In 2006 and 2013 the Symphonic Band received an invitation to present at concert at the Midwest Clinic: An International Band and Orchestra Conference. In the Spring of 2007, the John Philip Sousa Foundation awarded the McCracken Symphonic Band the prestigious Sudler Silver Cup. As a published arranger and composer, Mr. De Stefano has received commissions from the marching bands of Northwestern University, Samford University, the University of WisconsinLaCrosse, the University of Idaho and dozens of high schools from across the United States. His works have been performed on ABC’s 1996 Rose Bowl Halftime Show, Live! with Regis and Kathy Lee, and WBBM News Radio 780. Kevin Lepper is an internationally known percussionist/educator. His musical career has embraced a wide range of experiences, including El Paso Symphony, Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, and commercial recordings.
