SOKNDAL Sokndal er den sørligste kommunen i Rogaland med ca. 3.300 innbyggere. Administrasjonssenter er Hauge i Dalane (Haua). Andre tettsteder: Åna-Sira, Jøssingfjord, Sogndalstrand, Rekefjord, Nesvåg, Ålgård, Myssa, Mydland, Barstad og Eia. Fylkesvei 44/Nordsjøvegen går gjennom store deler av kommunen og forbinder Sokndal med Egersund og Flekkefjord. Stavangerekspressen går mellom Sokndal og Stavanger. Sokndal is the southernmost municipality in Rogaland county, with a population of around 3,300. Its administrative centre is Hauge i Dalane (Haua). Other villages in the municipality include Åna-Sira, Jøssingfjord, Sogndalstrand, Rekefjord, Nesvåg, Ålgård, Myssa, Mydland, Barstad and Eia. The FV 44 county road/ the North Sea Route runs through much of the municipality and links Sokndal to Egersund and Flekkefjord. The Stavangerekspressen bus service runs between Sokndal and Stavanger.

Sokndal var den første kommune i Norden som i 2003 ble medlem av den internasjonale bevegelsen Cittaslow. Vi har fokus på livskvalitet, identitet og gjestfrihet. HAV, FJORDER OG FJELL Kystlinjen mot Nordsjøen er 48 km. Sju små fjordarmer skjærer inn i landet og danner naturlige havner. Det er kort vei fra du løser fortøyningen til du er ute på det åpne havet med mange gode fiskeplasser. Unike fiskemuligheter i sjø, lakseelva Sokna, lakseelva i Åna-Sira og innlandsvann. Fra
geologi som er av internasjonal betydning, som er anerkjent av UNESCO og der bærekraftig utvikling spiller en svært viktig rolle. Selv om bakgrunnen for en geopark er geologi handler geoparker først og fremst om mennesker – både lokale og tilreisende, som er interesserte i å utforske, oppleve og dele de uendelige mulighetene innen både natur og kultur i en geopark. The mining company Titania is a cornerstone of the municipality’s economy, employing around 220 people. It is the world’s largest ilmenite ore, and is operated as an opencast mine. Sokndal otherwise has a varied business sector with a host of small businesses. Accommodation options are available at the culture hotel, campsite and private cabins and houses. There are a range of shops in the administrative centre of the municipality Hauge i Dalane, which are well known for providing excellent service. Jøssingfjord Science Museum – a museum combining natural and cultural history – is under
development. It will focus on nature, people and technology. There are great opportunities for walks on the many waymarked walking trails in the area. A regional motor sports centre is also in the pipeline. Tellenes Wind Farm started operation in 2017. Sokndal municipality actively seeks to create new jobs. The municipality has a modern school and full kindergarten coverage. There is a modern playground in the centre of Hauge i Dalane, and a sports ground with football pitches, a tennis court, a frisbee court, beach volleyball court, an enclosed area for ball games and an indoor sports arena etc.
SOGNDALSTRAND Sogndalstrand is one of the most popular destinations in Rogaland. It is the only village in Norway in which buildings dating from both the 18th and 19th centuries and the surrounding cultural landscape have protected status.
It used to be a staple port, and it was a separate municipality until 1944. It now has a culture hotel, a gallery, a golf course, a village shop, an outdoor amphitheatre, a sculpture jetty, a fisheries museum and an ocean rafting company. Sogndalstrand Amfi hosts several big concerts during summer. Sogndalstrand is located at the mouth of the Sokna salmon river.
OCEAN, FJORDS AND MOUNTAINS Sokndal has a 48-km stretch of North Sea coastline. Seven small fjord arms cut into the land, creating natural harbours. When you push off from the quay, it’s not far to the open sea and many excellent fishing spots. There are unique opportunities for fishing in lakes, the salmon river Sokna, the salmon river in Åna-Sira and the sea. Sokndal extends from the coast inwards to rolling uplands with summits of up to 600 metres. These are great areas for

RARE GEOLOGICAL LEGACY The geology of Sokndal and Dalane is unusual and has given the area its characteristic landscape. Geological resources in the form of ore veins have led to the establishment of the mining company Titania. Magma UNESCO Global Geopark is a geographical area with internationally important geology, which is recognised by UNESCO and where sustainable development is a key factor. Although the background for a geopark is its geology, its primary focus is people, both locals and visitors, who are interested in exploring, experiencing and sharing the

CITTASLOW – A MULTI-FACETED BRAND. Sokndal was the first municipality in the Nordic countries to join Cittaslow, an international slow-city movement that started in Italy in 1999. The idea is to escape the daily grind, slow down and focus on quality of life and the good life. In Sokndal, it’s OK to be a bit different and slightly crazy. The ‘tall poppy syndrome’ (Law of Jante) is dead and buried. We organise a special Love Week and focus on the important things in life. We have no tourists – only guests! Why not visit one or more of the other Nordic Cittaslow municipalities – Kristinestad in Finland, Falköping in Sweden, Svendborg in

SOKNDAL – MUNICIPALITY OF CULTURE Sokndal is a municipality of culture and home to a number of voluntary organisations, a sports hall, artificial-grass football pitches, a shooting range, tennis court, an enclosed area for ball games, a frisbee court and lots, lots more. Ble fredet i statsråd 24. juni 2005 og består av trehusbebyggelse fra 1700- og 1800-tallet med omkringliggende kulturlandskap. Det eneste tettsted TITANIA AS I KARTREF. 4 i Norge hvor både bebyggelse og kulturlandskap Kommunens hjørnesteinsbedrift, verdens største er fredet. BRUFJELL I KARTREF. 1 Sokndal kommune. Tidligere handelssenter for Norges største lastemaskin. Kun for grupper med I Åna-Sira, ligger 184 m.o.h. og har fantastisk utsikt et større omland. Stedet har i dag kulturhotell, guide. over Listalandet og Sokndalskysten. Jettegrytene galleri, landhandel, fiskerimuseum, utendørs ligger på rekke og rad på et platå, ca. 20 meter amfi, skulpturmolo, havrafting m.v., over havflaten. Kjør FV44 mellom Hauge Nordsjøløype mellom Sogndalstrand i Dalane og forbi Åna-Sira, ta av mot Briggen “Vidar” er trolig det mest kjente seilskipet fra og Jøssingfjord. Merket topptur til Roligheten. Parker på parkeringsplassen Sogndalstrand. I 1866 tok “Vidar” under kommando av kaptein Standaåsen. The brig ‘Vidar’ is probably the most well-known sailing ship from Sogndalstrand. In 1866, ‘Vidar’ under the command of Captain Alfred Nielsen made its way up the St. Lawrence river and across the great lakes to Chicago. This was a feat previously only achieved by a few sailing ships. It therefore received a great welcome on its arrival.

Badeplass i Hammerhølen. Utleie hytter/leiligheter. Frisbee. Grottene i Brufjell ligger på Flekkefjord-siden av Åna-Sira er en populær og spektakulær opplevelse.
JØSSINGFJORD I KARTREF. 3 Kjent fra Altmark-affæren – den første krigshandling på norsk jord under 2. verdenskrig – 16. februar 1940. Minnesmerke og informasjonsskilt. Innerst i Jøssingfjord ligger to hus under Helleren, som er en gammel boplass. Husene er fra slutten av 1700-tallet/ begynnelsen av 1800-tallet. På stien inn til husene finnes en bronseplate over Kjell Aukrusts figur Mysil Bergsprekken, som skal være født under et steinsprang i Jøssingfjord i 1918. Nordsjøløype mellom Jøssingfjord og Sogndalstrand.
BLÅFJELL GRUVER I KARTREF. 5 Ble drevet i perioden fra 1863 til 1876. Malmen fra gruven ble skipet ut i Rekefjord. Det ble bygget en jernbanetrasé fra Blåfjell til Rekefjord. Dette er i dag en fin gang- og sykkelsti. Flott tursti fra badeplassen Linepollen og videre innover til Blåfjellet.

Ved innløpet til Rekefjord er et støpejernsfyr bygget i 1895. Fyret ble automatisert i 1972. Fyret ble tidligere bebodd av fyrmester og hans assistent. Lille Presteskjær Fyr kan leies til overnatting, møter, selskaper og annet. Du kommer til fyret med båt eller ved å følge turstien fra Nordfjord. Lille Presteskjær åpent for allmennheten hele året. REKEFJORD I KARTREF. 10 Verneverdig trehusbebyggelse i Åve. Den østlige delen av Rekefjord var en del av Sogndal Ladested. Her var det bradbenk, rekefabrikker, fiskemottak, sildekummer, anløpsted for Kystruten, utskipning av malm fra Blåfjell Gruver med mer. I dag finnes pukkverk på begge sider av fjorden, asfaltverk og losstasjon. Det gamle Tollpakkhuset fra tidlig på 1800-tallet er restaurert og eies av Sokndal Bygdetun. Moderne gjestekai på Malmkaien innerst i fjorden.
Lokalisert på Myssa består av stein fra alle landets kommuner. Flott spasertur fra Fylkesvei 1 til varden med muligheter for en rundtur videre fra toppen.

NESVÅG I KARTREF. 11 Er et gammelt fiskevær med verneverdig sjøhusrekke. På Nesvåg finnes Nesvaag Sjø- og Motormuseum med gamle, restaurerte båtmotorer, Fiskarheim som kan brukes til mindre møter og sammenkomster. MS Sjødis er en sertifisert fiskeskøyte for 12 personer, og brukes til fiske- og sjøturer samt at det her er 3 robåter til utleie.
HAUGE I DALANE (HAUA) I KARTREF. 12 Kommunens administrasjonsenter med et rikt utvalg av butikker, post i butikk, servicebedrifter, kafeteria, informasjonskontor i kommunehuset Soknatun og mer. Besøk gjerne den flotte parken og lekeplassen midt i sentrum hvor du kan slappe av og ta livet med ro. I parken ble Janteloven begravet i 2005. Besøk også Thildahaugen, som er et flott parkområde bak kirken. Pendlerparkering med ladestasjon for el-biler v/YX bensinstasjon.

FRUKTBARHETSKULT PÅ ROSLAND I KARTREF. 13 Gudehode, steinalter og blotingskar fra eldre jernalder – ca. 2000 år gammelt. Sagnet forteller at alteret ble brukt til hesteofringer til guden Frøy. Sokndal has lots to offer so it’s well worth spending a couple of days here. You can also visit our neighbouring municipalities Eigersund and Flekkefjord. A trip to Pulpit Rock is just two hours
away. Here is a taster of what you can see and do in Sokndal:
BRUFJELL I MAPREF. 1 Åna-Sira is situated at an elevation of 184 metres above sea level, and has fantastic views across Listalandet and the coast of Sokndal. The Jettegrytene potholes cover a plateau, approx. 20 metres above sea level. Follow the FV44 road between Hauge i Dalane and past Åna-Sira, turn off towards Roligheten. Park at the parking area beside the school and walk approx. two kilometres along the road towards the sea and to a turnaround. The path starts at the turnaround and is waymarked up towards Brufjell and on down to the Brufjell caves.
ÅNA-SIRA I MAPREF. 2 Is situated on the boundary between Flekkefjord and Sokndal and between the counties of Rogaland and Vest-Agder. The river cuts the village in two. This old fishing village has a church, a prawn-processing factory and a power station. The grocery shop, Joker Åna-Sira, is owned by the people who live there. The shop also has petrol pumps and a charging station for electric cars. It also provides tourist information. The salmon river offers great fishing. There is a bathing spot at Hammerhølen. Cabins/apartments for let. Frisbee court. The Brufjell caves, located on the Flekkefjord side of Åna-Sira, are a popular and spectacular attraction.

On the path to the houses, you will pass a bronze plaque commemorating one of the Norwegian author Kjell Aukrust’s characters, Mysil Bergsprekken, who was said to have been born under a rock ledge in the Jøssingfjord in 1918. The North Sea Trail runs between Jøssingfjord and Sogndalstrand. There are several waymarked trails in the area to, among other things, the spectacular Kolbolten bolt.
TITANIA AS I MAPREF. 4 A cornerstone of the municipality’s economy, is the world’s largest ilmenite ore. It is an opencast mine and its huge size makes it well worth a visit. Norway’s largest crawler-loader is found at the mine. Tours are only available for groups with a guide.
THE BLÅFJELL MINES I MAPREF. 5 Were in operation from 1863 until 1876. The ore from the mine was shipped from Rekefjord. A railroad was built from the mines to Rekefjord, which is now a lovely walking and cycling path. There is also a nice walking trail from the bathing spot at Linepollen inland to Blåfjellet.

SYKKELTURER I Sokndal finnes en rekke fine muligheter for sykling. Veiene i Sokndal er lite trafikkert og passer godt for sykling. Sykkelløypa Nordsjøløypa – The North Sea Cycle Route - går gjennom Sokndal. Sogndalstrand Kulturhotell har 15 sykler til utleie. Ved gjestehavnen på Malmkaien finnes noen sykler til utlån for besøkende som kommer med båt.

Stavanger Trekking Association rents the municipality’s property at Gaudland where you will find accommodation, fishing lakes and many lovely walking trails. Norges råeste rasteplass! - Norways most spectacular stopping place! Sykkelrasteplassen – Tunellstuo - ligger i den gamle tunellen på utsiden av tunnellen før du kommer til Jøssingfjord fra vest. Her kan du sitte ned og nyte utsikten og få informasjon om da vegen ble bygget. Muligheter for overnatting i hengekøyer inne i tunellen.
Tunellstuo, a stopping place for cyclists, is situated in the old tunnel beside the new tunnel as you approach Jøssingfjord from the west. You can take a break here and enjoy the view, and read up on when the road was built. You can also spend the night in a hammock inside the tunnel.

Hunden Donn bodde på Lille Presteskjær fyr ved innseilingen til Rekefjord i Sokndal. Dette fyret hadde ikke tåkelur. Hunden tilhørte familien Gjertsen, som trente den opp til å bjeffe til skip og båter når det var tåke. Den ble veldig populær og mange ganger hente det at skip kjørte nær inntil fyret og kastet kjøttbein til hunden. Donn døde i 1938, og da ble det skrevet en nekrolog i Aftenposten. 27. juli 2019 avdukes bronsefigur til minne om hunden Donn på Lille Presteskjær Fyr. Donn the dog at Lille Presteskjær Lighthouse Donn the dog lived at Lille Presteskjær Lighthouse on the approach to Rekefjord in Sokndal. The lighthouse had no foghorn, so the dog’s owners, the Gjertsen family, trained it to bark at ships and boats when it was foggy. The dog became very popular and ships often passed close to the lighthouse so they could throw a bone to the dog. Donn died in 1938, and an obituary was written and published in Aftenposten newspaper. On 27 July 2019, a bronze sculpture was unveiled in memory of Donn the dog at Lille Presteskjær Lighthouse.

Frank Tønnesen, alias Tønes, er en viseartist fra Sokndal. Han skriver og framfører sanger om nære og fjerne ting med mye humor og ironiserende visdom. Han synger på Sokndalsdialekt, som i 2006 av NRK Rogaland ble kåret til Rogalands fineste dialekt. Frank Tønnesen, known as Tønes, is a folk singer from Sokndal. He writes and performs his songs on all manner of subjects with a lot of humour and ironic wisdom. He sings in the Sokndal dialect, which was voted Rogaland’s prettiest dialect in 2006 by the broadcaster NRK Rogaland.
