Should an accident happen, HCA kid-friendly ERs are nearby. Our full-service hospitals are staffed with experienced doctors and nurses who handle all types of injuries. So, when your child needs expert emergency care, you can count on us to provide it 24/7. Summer is almost here and Summer Camp Fun is proud to bring you our 7th Summer Camp Fun issue with our featured summer program being Riviera Day Camp. They offer two campus locations with amazing summer programs for children starting as young as 3 years old to students entering the 10th grade. We are also proud to include many other great summer programs for families to start planning their summer programs. As a mother of three, I understand how overwhelming it can be to find a program that fits your children. There are so many great options out there, programs that focus more on the outdoors, programs that focus on technology and coding, drama camps and those geared towards fine arts. Summer camp should be more than just a babysitting service, it should provide each child with a fun environment to develop their skill-sets and hobbies. We hope this issue is a good starting point for your search. Please visit our website, www.summercampfunfl.com and take advantage of our camp search tool. Here is to another great summer adventure! The Long Lasting

SU M ME R C AMP FU N

BENEFITS OF CAMP Camp has become a part of the fabric of America — conjuring special memories of hiking, swimming, friendships, and adventure for generations. When children go to camp, they’ll likely come home gushing about the lifelong friends they’ve made, and the exciting adventures they had. What they probably won’t tell you about are the life lessons camp has given them — those skills that, if nurtured at home after camp, translate into a lasting self-confidence, an awareness of the importance of kindness, and a greater comfort in voicing their opinions. For more than 150 years, camp has been changing lives — allowing all children to feel successful, especially those who may struggle with traditional educational settings. Camp is full of fun and excitement, but it is so much more — developing children who are better equipped to lead in the twenty-first century with skills such as independence, empathy, the ability to work as part of a team, and a broader world view.

• Camp is a safe and nurturing environment that enhances social skills. Camp is for everyone, so

children and youth have the opportunity to meet and interact with peers from outside their school environment.

• Camp supplements traditional education. Camps use intentional programming to create a balance of experiential learning opportunities that are physical, emotional, and social.

• Camp provides experiences that promote self-confidence and future academic growth.

American Camp Association® (ACA) independent research shows that parents and camp staff, as well as the campers themselves, report significant growth in several areas, including leadership, independence, social comfort, and values and decisions.

• Camp encourages a respect and love of nature. Children are able to learn about the natural world. Camp also gives them a chance to “unplug.” More and more experts are advocating the value of time spent in nature for children — and camp is a perfect place to do that.

• Camp provides the opportunity to stay physically active. Camp is the ultimate outdoor experience with programs that offer physical activities and sports that enhance health and teach self-confidence.

• Camp is a natural extension of the classroom. Research indicates that by participating in strategically planned, structured summer experiences, children reduce summer learning loss. Camp challenges children, keeps them engaged, develops creativity and their talents, and expands their horizons. Reprinted with permission of the American Camp Association ©2016 American Camping Association, Inc.on.

About ACA —The American Camp Association® (ACA) is a national organization; 9,000 members strong, it is actively working with over 2,700 camps. ACA is committed to collaborating with those who believe in quality camp and outdoor experiences for children, youth, and adults. ACA provides advocacy and evidence-based education and professional development, and is the only national accrediting body for the organized camp experience. Middle School Explores William Shakespeare’s

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

SU M ME R C AMP FU N

While most schools do not begin to look at William Shakespeare until early high school, Conchita Espinosa Academy (CEA) upper school students are not only reading Shakespeare as a class in the eighth grade, but also delving into his life and plays, as early as fifth grade. In March, the theatre department produced William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with a cast of young actors 10 to 14-years old. The philosophy behind the school’s decision to go forth with a Shakespeare curriculum is consistent with the idea that if kids grow

32 l SUMMER CAMP FUN / 2016 14

up relating and identifying with Shakespearean text and content from an early age —relating in age-appropriate and appealing ways— they will be ready to appreciate it on an even deeper level when they are more mature. The fear and intimidation that often comes with the assumption that Shakespeare’s works are innately difficult or enigmatic will not be present. Once they are past the language barrier that might arise when reading Shakespearean language and they understand what is actually being said, students enjoy the text and themes tremendously and are able to embody the characters they are playing The production was far from traditional; Directed by Ean Kessler, 27-year old playwright, actor, and drama teacher from New York City, who spent a year in England training under Tony nominee Tim Carroll, and teaching and playing the title role of Hamlet in the original Globe Stage itself. Kessler engages students with Shakespearean language, develops their understanding of classical text, and organizes and runs games geared towards putting classical text into the students’ minds and bodies. A modern-dress production, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, music students from the school played live popular music during the play, enhancing the anachronistic nature of the production and adding to the duality between fantasy and reality by which the play is characterized. To further enhance their experience, this year, select students traveled to Pasadena, California to study Shakespeare in an intensive program at the classical theatre company A Noise Within (founded by CEA class of 1972 alumna, Julia Rodriguez-Elliott). Students spend a week in intensive theatre workshops at A Noise Within. They watched two full plays (Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and George Bernard Shaw’s You Never Can Tell), around which the workshops were centered. Two days were devoted to Romeo and Juliet, during which students devoted time dissecting text, analyzing characters, building scenes, and even participating a real sword-fighting workshop. In addition, they also had workshops on Shaw, toured the theatre, had question and answer sessions with directors, actors, technicians, and designers in various fields, and got an inside look at the “process” behind creating great theatre. n

Take Camp Skills Back to School

How can parents help transfer these skills into the classroom? ACA suggests the following tips: Remember to Remind. When campers come home, they often keep the spirit of camp alive for a week or two, and then things trail off. Use positive reinforcement to remind campers that you appreciate the

positive attitude and willingness to help that they developed at camp. Become Camp-Like. Families can set the example by demonstrating a willingness to change something at home in order to sustain some of the changes campers have made, such as having a job wheel that you put up on the wall outlining chores. Everyone Gets a Say. At camp, children help determine how their day is spent. Their advice is actively sought, and they feel like equal players. Emulating this environment at home allows them to continue to stand up for themselves and feel like a contributing member of the household. Avoid the Negative Compliment. Don’t inadvertently sabotage efforts by pointing out differences in behavior. Instead of saying, “you never did this before,” praise the behaviors in a genuine way. For example, “I noticed how patient you were with your little brother.” Above all else, let your child know that what they learned at camp is going to serve them well when they go to school this fall. n Reprinted with permission of the American Camp Association, ©2016 American Camping Association, Inc.

S U MM E R C AM P FU N

Millions of parents chose camp for their child or teen because of the immense benefits of the experience. Not only does camp foster learning 21st century life skills like independence, problem-solving, and teamwork, but it’s also fun! As the summer fades and children return to school, American Camp Association reminds parents to pack a few extra items from camp in the school backpack: Confidence. All through the camp experience, children and youth have tried new activities and been successful; they feel empowered. Curiosity. Camp has given children and youth the chance to explore, study, and observe in an experiential learning environment. Character . Camp has challenged children and youth to develop character —through fostering respect for each other, a sense of community, and the ability to solve problems.

Located in the heart of the Florida Keys on Big Pine Key, Seacamp, the original program dedicated to the education of youth in Marine Sciences and SCUBA Diving, has been teaching teens about the ocean and coral reefs since 1966. This is truly an amazing and special place. Campers, aged 12 to 17, participate in a variety of programs during their session. Our marine science programs are the heart of Seacamp. Campers participate in general marine sciences, marine communities, animal behavior and marine aquaria courses under the guidance of academically trained instructors. Campers are able to explore the local waters and environments through kayak trips, science labs and boat trips. Campers learn about and appreciate the ocean while snorkeling over various marine environments, including coral reefs, shallow bottom areas, sponge flats, seagrass beds and mangrove coastal shorelines. Advanced studies are offered in reef fish ecology, coral reef ecology and underwater field research using SCUBA diving. Seacamp prides itself on its long history of providing teens with the appropriate skills to use SCUBA as an underwater research tool. We offer several courses in SCUBA diving to qualified participants. Options range from a NAUI basic open water certification to the NAUI Master Diver Certification and a marine investigations course, an ongoing research class that publishes a paper in The Seacamp Journal of Research. Parents can feel confident in knowing that their children are learning from a program designed specifically for teens! n 17 2016 / SUMMER CAMP FUN l 35
