Il Vittoriale degli Italiani

L&L is one of the key players involved in a new trail of external lighting around the hillside estate known as the Vittoriale degli Italiani, erected by Gabriele d’Annunzio in Gardone Riviera on Lake Garda. This new stretch of external lighting, inaugurated on 2017 June with a celebration entitled “Un immenso desiderio di festa”, finally allows visitors to enjoy the architectural elements and some of the footpaths in the poet’s estate not only by day but also by night. This large lighting project concentrates on the walk that leads from the Prioria d’Annunzio’s home and museum, to the MAS (Museo d’Annunzio Segreto) and the Puglia cruiser, the evocative relic from the Great War. A significant number of L&L projectors and linear profiles have been installed. The wall-mounted Neva 1.0 linear profile was integrated into the existing stone walls that line the walks picking out the pathway very atmospherically. Neva 2.0 placed at the base of the arch, together with the Pivot 1.6 projector, lights the intrados and picks out the profile of the archways. Spot 1.6 and 4.1 outdoor projectors are responsible for lighting the significant architectural elements along the path. Finally, the Siri 1.0 projector lights the imposing entrance to the Vittoriale.

Teatro Olimpico Vicenza, Italy

All photos by Tommy ilai

As of September 2016, L&L is an official sponsor of Teatro Olimpico, one of the artistic wonders of the city of Vicenza, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1994. The theatre was the final piece of work by the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and was inaugurated with its first production in 1585. Its stage is still in use today, for a succession of theatre productions, dance shows and musical events. Vicenza’s municipal administration has embarked on the work of improving these external areas, which will play an increasingly important role in hosting events and exhibitions. L&L has thrown new light on the archaeological garden with its own LED lighting fixtures able to guarantee improved colour rendering and greater energy efficiency, thus significantly reduced consumption. The Spot 3.2 outdoor projectors installed on the garden walls blend discreetly into their surroundings. The warm white light was chosen in collaboration with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici e Paesaggistici during lighting tests to bring out the best in the materials the walls are made of. The lighting fixtures are positioned in groups just below the roofs, mounted on a purpose-built plate finished in cor-ten: this plate has made it possible to minimise the installation work and preserve the integrity of the walls. The devices are each angled differently so that they light effectively both the perimeter walls and the loggia near the entrance gate as well as the pedestrian walkways. For the accent lighting on the UNESCO plaque next to the entrance, an even smaller projector was used: the Spot 4.1.

Chiericati Palace Vicenza, Italy Palazzo Chiericati is a building of the early maturity of Andrea Palladio. Designed in the mid-sixteenth century by the noble family of Chiericati and completed at the end of the seventeenth century, the palace is a milestone in the career of architect Palladio. Backing onto a large open area known as the square of the island, as it is bordered by the rivers Bacchiglione and Retrone, the building is shaped like a suburban villa with asmajestic urban front that echoes an ancient Roman forum, thanks to the double order of loggias. The Municipality di Vicenza bought it from the noble Chiericati family in 1839 to house the city’s art collection. The building now houses the Painting and Sculpture Collections, the Drawings and Prints Rooms and the Numismatics Room.

Villa Medici del Vascello San Giovanni in Croce, Cremona, Italy Light planning Studio Luce Sacchi

In 2014, after 9 years of architectural improvements, Villa Medici del Vascello was opened to the public. It is a historic residence located in San Giovanni in Croce (province of Cremona). It is known for having been the residence of Cecilia Gallerani, the lady in the ‘Lady with an Ermine’ painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Once a nobleman’s home, the residence has been restored to its past glory and brilliance also thanks to a carefully planned lighting design project, which involved the use of a number of lighting solutions by L&L with the supervision of Studio Luce Sacchi. The Bright 2.4 recessed lighting devices were installed on the first floor balcony of the Villa. The elegant serliana structure is enhanced by the lights placed at the base of the columns. The 24° angle illuminates all of the column, including the capital. The inner balcony is enhanced once again by the River 1.0 linear profiles. River Wall 1.0 fixtures (with brackets), have been placed inside the loggia on the upper floor, creating a suggestive chiaroscuro effect on the wall. Bright 2.4 were installed at the base of the columns, the dominant elements of the spacious inner courtyard of the Villa, to illuminate both columns and arches. Meanwhile, the River 1.0 are concealed recessed spotlights running along the lateral walls of the courtyard, chosen for their elliptical optical nature to illuminate the walls in their entirety.

Pazo A Toxeiriña is an estate built in 1901 for Colonel Francisco Iglesias Brage, a Spanish aviation hero, who used it as his private residence for many years. The various sections that make up the building complex are arranged in a Z-shape, surrounded by extensive gardens. Inside there are large rooms for functions and private events, a chapel, and a museum dedicated to Colonel Brage. Recent restructuring work has revitalised the building both architecturally and in terms of lighting design, particularly in the outdoor areas. Outdoor linear profiles River 1.0 e River 2.0 have been recessed into the building’s perimeter. With 11° optics, they bathe the walls in a warm, 3000K light, enhancing the texture of the stone. Other linear profiles, Neva 1.0, are installed on the exterior cornice. Spot 2.7 projectors provide accent lighting for the bell that tops the building. Their asymmetrical snoots mean the projectors’ beams can be precisely focused and glare eliminated. The garden at the rear features trees with trunks that are intriguingly irregular and, in some cases, hollow - these are picked out with outdoor recessed spotlights Litus 2.0. These lighting fixtures have 25° optics, a colour temperature of 3000K, and a screen with no visible screws.

The Theodor Aman Museum Bucharest, Romania The Theodor Aman Museum is one of Bucharest’s most elegant historic buildings, constructed in 1868 as the private residence of Theodor Aman himself, one of Romania’s most important 19th-century artists. It was turned into a museum in 1908, and now houses most of Aman’s paintings. Aman’s former home is one of the few buildings of that period in the Romanian capital whose structure has remained unaltered over the years. Its architectural design, external decoration and interior design clearly reflect the artist’s personal taste. The light planning that has cast new light on the museum was the responsibility of LuceDomotica. They used Bright 3.8 outdoor recessed lighting fixtures installing them along the entire perimeter of the building. The chosen optics create a concentrated light beam in a warm white tone that accents the pilasters at the building’s base, below the windows and capitals. The same lighting fixtures have also been used at the entrance to the museum, behind the columns, to create a silhouette effect.

Filipescu-Cesianu House Bucharest, Romania Light planning LuceDomotica The Filipescu-Cesianu House, one of the few aristocratic residences of Bucharest’s Belle Epoque, stands a stone’s throw away from Victory Square. It is now home to a museum and open to the public. The building consists of a ground floor and first floor with a large balcony – LuceDomotica handled the project of upgrading its lighting technology. To light the entrance, they chose the Geko 6.1, an outdoor wallmounted fixture with a double beam. The devices were fitted with spacers and constructed in a customized version with different top and bottom optics to create a marked contrast on the ground floor walls. On the side walls, Neva 1.0 outdoor linear profiles have been installed halfway up the building: they point downwards to highlight the square- shaped architectural elements just below the lighting fixtures. On the first floor, Neva 1.1 and Neva 1.0 fixtures were installed to light respectively the balcony columns and the vault. The balcony parapet is decorated with an elegant frieze, picked out by the barely visible 1.6 projectors. Pivot 1.6 fixtures are also used to light the first-floor pilasters and, at the base of the friezes below the windows, to emphasize these particular architectural elements.

The Gun Tunnel is an underground tunnel network used by the Italian army during the Great War and is made up of various tunnels inside Peak 3 of Mount San Michele. The complex runs along two main galleries and was initially dug to house eight medium-calibre cannons. In 1922 it was declared a Sacred Area. Today the Gun Tunnel has been reopened to the public following recovery work promoted by the Carso 2014+ project from the Province of Gorizia. Inside, visitors can see the concrete bases on which the cannons sat, the corridors, and the rooms used by the troops as deposits for materials, infirmary and dormitories. From 1917, these spaces in the heart of Peak 3 were also used as the headquarters of the Tactical Command of the Third Army.

L&L was technical sponsor of the artistic installation Wave/Cave on display at the INTERNI Material Immaterial exhibition in the Cortile d’Onore courtyard of the University of Milan as part of the FuoriSalone 2017. The installation, designed by the New York firm SHoP Architects, evokes the idea of geological time marked by the different eras. It uses 1670 blocks of unglazed terracotta to create 797 profiles on 3 levels, alluding to the idea of rock stratification. The lighting, designed by PHT Lighting Design, brings out the beauty and porous nature of the material and creates a play of volumes between the façade, compact and regular, and the interior, which reveals a surprisingly rich ornamentation. For this installation, L&L supplied 89 FLORI 1.0 projectors, which were positioned on the external perimeter and between the strata of the interior.

Food for Thought - Shaping and Sharing the Future The UAE Pavilion at Expo 2015, explored the very real challenges that arise in feeding the planet, particularly in the interwoven topics of land, food, energy and water. It also highlighted some of the innovative solutions that the UAE has developed in these areas.

Light planning David Atkinson, Lighting Design Ltd

PROJECT Foster + Partners

Designed by Foster + Partners, the striking form of the UAE Pavilion is created by a series of tall rippled walls. These impressive 12-metre structures evoke both the narrow self-shaded streets of the UAE’s historic settlements and the magnificent open sand dunes of its deserts. 3D scans of dune surfaces have informed the wall design to create an authentic texture. These sinuous, curving shapes guided visitors through a range of intriguing spaces and exciting, informative experiences. Complementary landscaping based on native UAE species provided a welcoming green backdrop. Engineered for the naturally cool weather of Milan and the sunny climes of the United Arab Emirates, the pavilion was dismantled at the end of Expo Milano 2015 and reassembled in the UAE’s lowcarbon Masdar City, reflecting the principles embodied in Masdar’s sustainability ethos.

Expo 2015 Azerbaijan Pavilion Milan, Italy

Treasure of biodiversity The main idea behind the Azerbaijan pavilion at Expo 2015 was the biosphere, in other words, a system open to external flows while protecting and fostering the development of the life inside. The pavilion had grown from this key idea, composed of three biospheres that are set like jewels into the building’s overall design. The undulating wooden walls wrap around the building, evoking the movement of the wind that is typical of those lands and preserving the pavilion’s microclimate. They also stand as a symbol of the cultural and creative streams that have swept through the country since time immemorial. Azerbaijan is a unique model for biodiversity: within its boundaries are nine of the eleven climates known to exist in the world. The pavilion has been designed to be dismantled at the end of Expo 2015 and then reassembled in Baku. It is the work of Simmetrico network, in collaboration with the Arassociati architectural studio, structural designers at iDeas and landscape architects AG&P. L&L lighting fixtures had been used to light the pavilion’s focal points, such as the spheres themselves (Pivot 1.1 and Spot 4.0) and the green wall (Neva 2.1 and 2.2); in addition to this, numerous recessed lights had been installed in the floors on each level (Bright 1.0, Bright 6.6, Litus 5.2 and Smoothy 5.0).

Expo 2015 Angola Pavilion

Project António Gameiro, Paula Nascimiento

Milan, Italy

Food and culture: Educate to Innovate This was the theme chosen by Angola for its participation in Expo 2015: “Education” to raise awareness in society on the subject of food and its main characteristics, and “innovation” to encourage good practice, knowledge and centuries-old traditions in line with policies of sustainability. The pavilion had been designed by architects António Gameiro and Paula Nascimiento to be easy to dismantle and re-use, and has been built using sustainable materials. Its façade replicates the geometric patterns of traditional Angolan fabrics, creating a natural light filter. Inside, an impressive, stylised baobab dominated the space, representing the starting point from which visitors begin their journey through Angolan culinary traditions. The route wound through four floors, prompting visitors to reflect on the country’s culture, and focused on the importance of sustainable development as well as the central role of women as promoters of development and custodians of traditions. Many L&L lighting fixtures had been installed throughout the pavilion, including the recessed uplights Bright 5.0. These were chosen with RGB LEDs, and 20° and 40° optics, and installed at the foot of the huge baobab, around the columns and against the walls. The same fixtures are also installed outside the pavilion, in the entrance area.

Light Up Your Brain “London. A loud city. A city of lights, flavors and speed. A city for the restless, always overexposed to extreme stimuli, always in search for the rush and the excitement. Here, we feel creative and inspired. Our feelings shift so fast under the spell of the city, but do we ever take time to digest them? Are we aware of the immense beauty that occurs within our brains? And could we somehow express this beauty in such a way that it, itself, becomes a source of amazement? We wondered how emotions look like and became curious of what happens in the brain when one is laughing, crying or meditating; when one feels stressed, amazed, disgusted or deeply calm. Through our installation, we aspired to show the reaction of a stimulated brain, where Light was our words and Colour, our rhymes. Through a study of colour, intensity and rhythm of the light we interpreted what happens in our brain when stimulated by external situations. Each of us was able to visualize a ‘map’ of the feeling, outlined with light, within a safe, dome shaped shelter. The structural nodes and lines of the dome were our support to create with light an interpretation of the neuronal network inside the brain. The L&L Luce&Light lighting scheme was controlled by DMX and connected to an interface used by each guest to manipulate the aspect of the dome. The control system provides for the use of 42 independent RGB groups and 120 steps per scene. Each step lasts 0.5 seconds.” MBLD

Sixty years after the shipwreck of the Italian ocean liner the Andrea Doria, and for the first time in Italy, the Ma.Mu and the Ansaldo Foundation have reconstructed a key event in the history of Italian shipping, with an exhibition that examined every aspect of this beautiful liner’s fate. In the manner of the Galata Museum, visitors were offered the Andrea Doria experience. Reconstructions of different areas of the ship, including its bow in 1:5 scale and a section of deck tilted at 30°, led visitors to retrace the path through the different decks that the passengers and crew had to take to escape the tragedy. The exhibition’s crowning glory is the six-metrelong model of the Doria that the Italian Line originally commissioned for promotional purposes. It was put into storage after the tragedy, and was forgotten about until it was found again by the director and housed in the museum.

Space Made Light Trani, Italy Light planning traverso-vighy architetti

The lighting installation in the courtyard of Palazzo Covelli was developed for the seminar Space Made Light, held by Giovanni Traverso of traverso-vighy architetti. The palazzo was built by the wealthy De Boctunis family, passing to the Forges Davanzati family in 1753, and to the Covelli family in 1832. The internal courtyard has two rows of arches; behind them a staircase winds its way to the upper floors. The focus of the dynamic lighting design was to enhance the solids and voids. The vaults were lit with RGBW projectors, while linear profiles in white light, alternating with RGB, were used on the back walls. For the balustrades and the second line of arches, an accent light was chosen to pick out the internal frame in order to highlight the façade’s architectural lines. The aim of the seminar was to spread the idea that light plays a fundamental expressive role in architecture and can have an enormous effect on our wellbeing, and a positive influence on the experience of people using the space: the lighting installation underlined the themes expressed during the seminar.

Vicenza Light Fest Vicenza, Italy Light planning traverso-vighy architetti

The project, designed by traverso-vighy architetti and staged by Raggi Di Luce, was realized on the occasion of Vicenza Light Fest 2013. The technical team of L&L worked closely with the lighting designer to develop special lighting effects, with decisions taken jointly on appropriate illumination systems and, where necessary, modifying its products to meet project needs. Some of the installations featuring equipment especially created for this event are described below. Thirty lamps have been mounted on 1.5 m plexiglass tubes in the Basilica loggias to bring alive mobile stalks characterised by red reflections and dangling loosely from the vaulted ceilings. In Piazza dell’Isola, over 8 km of optical fibres have been installed in a structure designed to create the impression of five luminous columns suspended among the trees in the gardens in front of Chiericati Palace.

Castello Tafuri Charming Suites Portopalo di Capo Passero, Siracusa, Italy Castello Tafuri is an accommodation facility and events location situated in a small fishing village in Sicily, on a rocky cliff top overlooking the sea. Designed as a private residence in 1933, it was only completed in 1964, when it was converted into a hotel. It was subsequently bought by the TafuriCantone family, who started completely redeveloping it. The project, involving both architectural redevelopment and a completely new lighting scheme, was coordinated by the architect Fernanda Cantone. Her meticulous light planning provided for the use of LED lighting fixtures from L&L in a number of different applications. The footpaths and the area around the swimming pool are lit with Rondò 2.1 recessed spotlights with radial optics. The stone in the wall running alongside the swimming pool area is shown off to best effect using Spot 1.0 projectors. River 1.1 linear profiles light the base of the Castello, highlighting in particular the brick cornicing crowning a series of arches. In the external courtyard, Neva 2.0 linear profiles installed at the foot of the stone wall, together with Bright 2 fixtures, recessed into the wall on either side of the doors, underline the contrast in textures between the irregular stonework of the walls and the geometric surface of the doorways. Inside the Castello, Step 5 step lights guide visitors along the main staircase, while Lyss 1.0 projectors are used decoratively in the common rooms. Ella IN 2.0 is the indoor wall-mounted fixture chosen for the corridors and common rooms, together with the ceiling-mounted Teko 5.0.

Corte Martinelli is a late-19th-century villa in Andria, southern Italy. It hosts receptions and events in its indoor rooms and in the park, which covers almost 30,000 square metres. The lighting has been designed to show off the vast outdoor spaces, where L&L LED lighting fixtures are used in a number of different applications. Recessed spotlights Bright and Bright 316L light up the colonnade, summerhouse and fountain, while Rio linear profiles are used as signal lighting. Spot and Lyss have been chosen as outdoor projectors. The former are positioned on the edges of the green spaces, to highlight the verdant lawns, and the latter, on the villa’s window frames, creating a controlled blade of light.

Corte Bertesina

Project & Light planning traverso-vighy architetti

Corte Bertesina is an organic farm, located a few kilometres outside Vicenza, that has been the subject of a redevelopment project to achieve allround sustainability. The project is the work of the traverso-vighy architetti architectural practice, which has restored and transformed the original structure of this typical nineteenth-century Venetian farm courtyard. The development of a social farming project, which started in 2010 to offer job opportunities to young people with Down syndrome, has led to the complex restoration of the Corte. It has culminated in the creation of entirely new spaces, intended for production, sales, teaching and agritourism activities, that sit alongside the owners’ private quarters. L&L was responsible for the lighting planning, setting itself the objectives of energy conservation, light-pollution control and the occupants’ wellbeing. Neva 2.0 linear profiles, bracket mounted on the structural beams, light the shingles on the roof with a wash that creates a unique decorative effect. Neva 1.1 LEDs are installed indoors, in the private quarters, to draw attention to the modular panelling, and, in the study, completely recessed in the niches to light up their depths. The lighting in the external areas has been designed to interfere as little as possible with the night-time darkness of a farming environment: Beam 2.0 fixtures pick out the driveway entrance, while Trevi fixtures are integrated into the pool of water in the courtyard to pick out the long wall of local stone.

Light planning Light Design Solutions

Project arch. Richard England

The members of the M.U.S.E.U.M., a local Christian community founded at the beginning of the 20th century, use its conference halls and offices. The function of this building was envisioned as a highly meditative space. The strong spiritual character of the building itself is underscored by its spacious areas and their shapes and designs giving way to bodies of water and green areas, characterised by essential decorative elements. This gives birth to a dynamic environment where complementary architectural solutions coexist in synergy. Light Design Solutions Limited (Malta) carried out a vital role in the project, bringing their expertise and knowledge in everything lighting to the table. The L&L systems were used to light both indoor and outdoor spaces, mainly using warm white lights. The outdoor areas were enhanced by staging different scenography elements, using different machines from time to time. The spaces present traditional solutions used for lighting pavements, stairs and fountains, living side-by-side to quite the eccentric additions. A stellar example are the columns adorned with 3D elements or the shadows stretching out across the courtyard, running away from the glaring lights projected in a specific way to light the contours of some palms.

L&L Luce&Light / Public Spaces

The area around the tourist port of A Coruña is one of the city’s best-known squares. The buildings surrounding it have the glass façades, designed by the architect Juan de Ciórraga, that are typical of the late 19th century. The city takes its nickname of City of Glass from the architecture in this area because the buildings consist of structures in iron, wood and glass. The style is eclectic, with maritime references, reflecting the method by which ships’ sterns were constructed in the 18th century. The middle classes of the time took inspiration from this system when protecting their own houses from the sea, wind and humid marine air. The aim of the restoration of this part of the port was to connect the city centre with its “marine façade” through an open space leading to the sea, with a predominantly pedestrian zone given over to leisure and cultural activities. It connects the city to the sea but more importantly it connects the sea to the city for the many tourists who arrive at the port on board cruise ships. Lighting plays a vital role in the redevelopment process that has led to Plaza del Parrote once again becoming one of the city’s most important areas. The lighting design was entrusted to Alve Iluminación (A Coruña); to emphasise the square’s structure and its important role as a thoroughfare, the studio chose the Rio linear profile from L&L. Rio is ideal for step and pathway lighting in urban settings: it has an IP67 rating, can withstand traffic loads and guarantees no dark zones between fixtures.
