MOULDING MESMERIC DESIGNS

Ar. Dipak Thaker and his creative team are known for offering absolute design solutions from concept to the final creation, since 1989. Ar. Dipak recently celebrated the silver jubilee of his firm Interarch and on this occasion, Design Matrix explores the legend behind its formation and the successful ventures ranging from a small area to a bigger space, delivered with utmost fervour by his twin firms:Interarch and DID Consultants. biggest support for me. She handles the finance and administrative part of both the firms. My associate Murtuza Rangwala is a great asset to my design entity. He has been with me since past 19 years and continues the good work. He reminds me of my youthful days, when I used to work for 12 to 16 hours a day, he is sensible, intellectual and works for 16 hours, almost all 365 days. Another person, whom I would like to mention for her contribution is architect Manisha Sovani who is with us for more than a decade. I owe my gratitude to each individual in my team.

MM: The USP of your firm… DT: We have a reputation of delivering under tight deadlines. Our design process begins with the brief from the client and revolves around the client’s lifestyle, personality and taste. With this ideology, we have been successful in designing projects, even abroad. We have designed offices and homes in Singapore, Gold Coast(Australia), Chicago and Los Angeles(USA).

MM: Tell us about your interesting ventures… DT: We are involved in temple architecture. Swami Narayan Temple at Himmatnagar is master planned by us. Also, we are fortunate to have won a competition and got a chance to design Ambedkar Bhavan, a legendary piece of art. In this project the requirement was to display Babasaheb’s achievements in a modern way. This was indeed a challenging task and we moulded a structure with a space that is serene and calm, derived from original Buddhist style. We are doing many bungalows, villas, apartment designs, townships, institutional buildings, pubic buildings: hospitals, schools, colleges or institutional complexes.

MM: Your happiest moments are in… DT: Travel, food, theatre and music. In my leisure time, I enjoy dramas and music concerts. When I was young, I hardly got 26 DESIGN MATRIX • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015

MM: Tell us about your mission towards making this country a better place to live in… DT: I believe in the principles of Philantrophy and in this ideology, I renovated an old institute in to a tribal school in 2007 near famous Shamalaji’s temple, Gujarat, with a vision that every child can and must attain an excellent education. This school has all the modern amenities and is named after my mother. We even have a hostel building that can accommodate around 90 students. I am proud that more than 400 tribal students study here and we attained 90% result for SSC and HSC. This school is surrounded by the Aravalli ranges, adding a scenic bliss to the environment.

MM: Your mantra of attaining success… DT: Be cool and focused. I believe that a good designer is a person with creative instincts. My advice to the students of architecture and design would be to stay more focused. One needs to be sensitive to one’s surroundings and avoid shortcuts. JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015 • DESIGN MATRIX 27

BUNGALOW

Alluring Bungalow at Pune This bungalow is a perfect example of Neoclassicism, combining a regard for tradition and reverence for the classics with a concern for nature. All the rooms and levels of this space, are designed adhering to the Vaastu norms as per the client’s requirement. Understanding the climatic conditions of this place, huge verandahs and sit out areas were planned for family, friends and guests to cherish outdoor retreats, amongst the midst of nature. The centre of attraction of this home is a spacious party lawn. 28 DESIGN MATRIX • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015

INSTITUTIONAL SPACE An Office cum R & D centre The site is at Vapi, spread over 12 acres of gently sloping land set at the foot of low hills. This massive building of merely 20,000 sqmtr, is an office cum R & D centre. Functional efficiency coupled with dynamic apperance was given prime importance while designing the building. This building is facing North, thus to avoid larger glaze elevational area and to strike perfect balance and proportion, vertical Fins were introduced. The rising pattern of the Fins symbolise the growth of the company. The overhangs at the top level have been designed bearing in mind the harsh sunlight as well as the heavy rainfall that Vapi experiences in their respective seasons. A waterbody in the form of lake is created to maintain eco balance. DGU glass was used for habital areas, while reflective glass for pendent areas.

Meril Lifescience Medical Academy Located at Vapi, about 120km from Mumbai, this building is spread over 12 acres of gently sloping land set at the foot of low hills. The site has a sprawling cricket ground in fore front. The design of the building required non-conventional atmosphere to motivate creativity and innovations of the research scholars. This building is shaped with natural curvatures resembling a green mound. The pockets created within the built space, encourages natural light. While creating interesting flow of spaces, due importance is given to the functional aspect. Technical expertise was sought for provision of grass surface over the roof slabs.

For relaxation and fun, a palatial guest house is created for the employees of this firm with full height glazing corridors, offering the view of the courtyard. The design encourages maximum natural light in the interiors, saving energy. Indeed, one will enjoy the functionality and the modern, elegant ambience of this space.

Inviting Abode at Pune Defining modern lines, the interiors of this cosy bungalow are simply alluring. White colour dominates the neatly designed spaces of this dwelling. Mirrors reflect light, thus brighten the rooms. The reflection of the room creates a delusion of a greater amount of space than in reality and this ideology is smartly applied in the living and the dining area of this home. The designer mirror and a palatial oval glass dining table in the dinning area, creates a warm feel, while enjoying a relishing meal. The master bedroom is designed taking inspiration from a chess board with contrasting black and white colour palette.

Their aim has always been to design spaces that caters to aesthetic and the environment. 68 DESIGN MATRIX • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015

the ceiling. Elaborating further, Ar. Priyank adds, “Keeping in mind that the design and material palette needed to be replicated in any scale and place across India, the design elements were deconstructed and simplified for easy reproduction. This gave impetus to customize the movable elements such as light fixtures, tables and chairs. Thus the use of rich hues, textures and old-world materials became central to the design.” The seating style is largely divided into three typologies- running sofas, booths and stand-alone tables; all having distinct patterned upholstery to highlight their varying scales. In some cases, the booths give way to the rounded sofas, few of which are enclosed in alcoves made of plywood strips hand-cut to profile. The edges of will be moved by intricate motif inlay in

arose when it had to be fit in varying scales depending on site conditions. Elaborating with an instance, Ar. Namrata says, “The arch profile for the Ghatkopar outlet was designed completely different from that of the Thane outlet, since there was a change in ceiling height of over 3 feet. The Bandra outlet does away with the arches completely and instead incorporate stunning metal chandeliers inspired by the Hagia Sophiya mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. ” Entering the Ghatkopar outlet one will feel the 3 laser cut tiles that fit together to form a repetitive pattern on the floor. Here the walls are finished in situ plaster and given a hand-combed design effect. The Bronze mirrors with gilded frames are strategically placed to give an illusion of an infinite archway corridor. theme of Zaffran, Alfredo’s restaurant in Viviana mall, Thane was designed keeping in mind that the target clientele was a mix of a young, college-going crowd as well as families. Thus the interiors incorporated a quirky twist to vintage elements to appease the crowds across all ages. The highlight feature is a paper tube installation suspended in varying heights across the length of the restaurant, which helped accentuate the 14 foot ceiling height available on site. The bar panelling is of bison board, which complement the salvaged wooden louvres dotted all along the restaurant walls. Yoko Sizzlers, Thane The brief given by the client for Yoko Sizzlers was to create an awareness of the cuisine and redefine the brand identity through the restaurant interiors. Since all the existing outlets across the city had hugely different interiors, a strong need to link the interior concept to the food served and the epistemology of its name was the overriding factor of the new design. Few know that sizzlers are of American origin, since the name itself lends a Japanese feel. This led to a fusion interior idea mainly in terms of the materials used. The booth style seating and plain upholstery along the length of the restaurant paid homage to its American diner origin, whereas the Japanese theme was infused through elements such as Japanese apothecary or ceramic pots, real bamboo mat partitions and lamps and short green hedges used as partitions between seating areas. A highlight feature is the artwork on the entry wall, where an artist was called in to paint in-situ using the blow-pen technique seen rampantly in Japanese paintings. “Simplicity is more complex to achieve and it gives us a clear insight into the mind and design sense of space,” adds Priyank. www.sead.in

was painted black to camouflage the services. The led light strips on the floor starts with a spiral in the lobby, traverses up on the curved panels on the wall and fascia of the bar, finally joining the sweeping curved ceiling. The combination of all the curves along with colour changing lights, dancing in synchrony with the music played, creates the “mayaa”. The lounge design is modern with black and white colour as the base palette with a splash of plum to highlight the bar and live performance stage. The placement of the stage and DJ console at the start conveys the lounge as a live performance and music place amongst its patrons, which was the aim of the promoters. For food lovers, the restaurant space is designed in an open terrace. Explaining the restaurant design, Ar. Ajay says, “ We all will definitely love to dine in the skylight, but this restaurant was the result of a constraint that we faced while designing this space. 80 DESIGN MATRIX • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015

There was no scope for a permanent roof and hence, a tensile canopy was proposed, resulting the overall decor as a Moroccan tent. The feel is rustic with wooden furniture, coloured lanterns and Moroccan back lit Jali in the ceiling. The wood fire pizza oven -first of its kind in Guhwati, becomes the focus of this dining space.” There is a common lobby between the modern lounge and Moroccan restaurant, hence a modern idiom of traditional Moroccan pattern has been used in the ceiling. The walls are clad with pattern boards with lights at regular intervals. ple of a spacious home with lots of storage space, a typical challenging task at a suburban Mumbai apartment! This home was designed for a nuclear family of five members, 3 adults and 2 kids. Ar. Ajay and his team out smarted this challenge, with an inviting light colour palette and splashes of colour in upholstery and soft furnishings. The main door opens to face a stepped cabinet with niches that acts as a clever partition for the main seating and also provides a good amount of storage. “We created a spacious realm with a high gloss laminated finished dark veneer and to balance the same the walls were left white. The highlight of the room is the L shaped, custom designed and the fabricated crystal chandelier, which becomes the main source of light as lit by LED bulbs. The chandelier runs from one corner of the living room, turning on to the dining area and creates an end mark in front of the dining storage cabinet. The shutter of the unit opposite the chandelier is finished with a mirror, which reflects the chandelier and adds more length to it,” explains Ajay. The living room opens into a terrace. A small covered sit-out was planned for the tea parties that the clients hold. The diffuse lights on the terrace sets the perfect mood for entertaining the guests. The dining cabinet echoes the step 82 DESIGN MATRIX • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015

design of the cabinet at the entrance; painted in high gloss white it adds an illusion of verticality to the space and smartly holds a lot of storage without being overbearing. The splash of the wine colour is co-ordinated with the dining chair upholstery. Elaborating further on the interesting elements and the décor, Ajay adds, “A mermaid sculpture on the wall becomes the water source to the wash basin next to the dining. The idea was to design a sculpture, which becomes a water fountain, whenever the wash basin is in use. This has become a fascinating feature.” The kitchen area

colour scheme with a colourful mosaic dado. The kids room was to be shared with their grandfather, hence the room was not treated as an all kids room. The warm wood compliments the white walls and the colour of furnishing makes the room very cheerful. The heart of this home, the master bedroom being a cluttered space, the designers after racking their brains, used horizontal striped wallpaper for adding the illusion of a large space. The dark wood finish balanced with white colour on the furniture smartly subdues the mass of the extensive storages. The monotony

is contrasted

with checkered fabric from designer guild, adding the colour splash to the room. www.adapl.in JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015 • DESIGN MATRIX 83

The word Space Design relates itself to designing of all kinds of spaces. Interior, architectural, exhibition and outdoor spaces can be broadly termed as Space Designs. Thought of modernism came to India through an architectural event of designing new capital cities by Le Corbusier. But, in India modern architecture and the rest of modern design disciplines arrived at two separate points in time and place. [1] From these events the two streams – Architectural education and 84 DESIGN MATRIX • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015

Educational accreditation - A monitoring body or a controlling body? It is not that efforts to deal with this paradigm in space design were not done. We have many space design schools and courses making efforts to deal with this aspect through their course structure or through deliverance, but any such experimentation are restricted by rules and regulations of either AICTE or the Council of Architecture. Here the role of India Design council has to be defined as a monitoring, guiding, regulating body, and not a threatening body. It should allow enough Any basic course structure in architecture

approaches what will get affected is the overall design sensitivity towards space design. Thus the entire responsibility finally comes on to design education to nurture this design sensitivity in to the young graduating minds. Another such factor which is resulting in this dilution of design sensitivity is the aggressive marketing of home decorating franchisees. The exposure to a client of a ‘decorative sensitivity’ than ‘design sensitivity’ is developing a superficial test in the client. The resulting pressure is on the designer to merely reproduce or adopt an existing design as per wish of the client. This thinking methodology is suitable for a carpenter and to a client at a cheaper cost. As a result the designer becomes obsolete – or it becomes like ‘anybody can do this job’.

Conclusion The space design education needs a holistic approach in order to develop overall design sensitivity amongst learners. Undoing the done is not easy; re-assigning all architectural institutes under design council is an impractical option to adopt. Thus a golden mean has to be derived so that the present gap between the two approaches is bridged. Let it be noted here that some of these suggestions have already been put forward by many educationalist at various platforms. Criticism on present architectural education system is a favored topic at any architectural meet. But the holistic

Natural materials such as stone, rock, wood and sandstone are contrasted with strong African forms, motifs, embellishments and striking earth coloured tones. Due to the corrosive environment the palette of external materials was driven by durability. The aluminium used for the screens and external cano94 DESIGN MATRIX • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015

he Los Angeles-based firm, Indidesign, was tapped to refresh the building’s exterior, lobby, bar, restaurant, and outdoor living space following Hilton’s acquisition of Courtyard by Marriott, the venue’s

former occupant. The John Hardy Group analysed the property prior to its purchase and project managed its renovation. The property offers a new destination for locals and tourists alike to meet, play, socialize, and work, amid extensive redevelopment plans in this SoCal community. Indidesign’s concept for the latest Double Tree by Hilton introduces a unique interpretation of the West Coast lifestyle to the increasingly popular Marina del Rey area. “Working with Vito Lotta, Senior Director of Design for Hilton Worldwide was so much fun. He allowed us to stay connected to the basic DNA of the brand and yet craft an identity that truly has the flare of an independent boutique hotel….with 240 rooms!” says Beatrice Girelli, CoFounder and Design Director of Indidesign. The experience begins at the porte cochere entrance. The guests seamlessly flow through the entrance into the lobby lounge. An open floor plan inspired by urban loft living blurs the lines between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Evolving from the outdated business centres, Hotel MdR Marina del Rey, a DoubleTree by Hilton features a tech lounge that connects the lobby and bar areas where power outlets are seamlessly integrated into the furnishings throughout the entire ground floor. The indoor/outdoor restaurant beckons guests to one of the property’s most stunning features, an outdoor JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015 • DESIGN MATRIX 103

living room and pool outfitted with tree lights, area rugs, cosy seating alcoves, fire pits and layered lighting. The grey cement-like flooring with deep yellow and dark navy accent hues set a relaxed yet upbeat vibe within the hotel’s public spaces. The metal murals and sculptural resin reception desks are playfully mixed with reclaimed wood. Many of the surface treatments employed were custom designed by Indidesign and infuse the space with a playful personality. The design balances the West Coast lifestyle, where technology is deeply embedded in the culture, with the laid-back, carefree beach-going way of life. This unique and forward design approach, supported by the Hilton brand, ensures consistency in the guest experience across properties, yet pays tribute to Marina del Rey’s identity. “The spaces are inspired by urban living, yet they are fully soaked into the SoCal lifestyle, which is forward thinking and relaxed at the same time,” adds Girelli. This property’s opening comes on the heels of a flurry of activity as residential, commercial, entertainment, and tech industries flock to the neighbourhood. The Marina del Rey Harbor has been approved for an extensive cleanup and the L.A. County Board of Supervisors is in the process of approving development plans that include new residential properties, 200,000 square feet of retail space, revamped public spaces, and over 900 104 DESIGN MATRIX • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015

new hotel rooms. The goal is to create a more tourist friendly area, reduce traffic and open up new routes for public transportation, and ultimately draw more people to the Marina. This newly renovated hotel will complement these efforts and provide an exciting refreshed neighbourhood for both residents and guests to enjoy.

magine a penthouse perched atop a luxury apartment complex in one of the greenest areas in the city. Imagine a roomy and

airy apartment, which has sunlight filtering in through large bay windows and where the view changes dramatically from day to night. Imagine a bachelor residence that is comfortable, warm and welcoming, and yet, modern, youthful and minimalistic. Designed by elitaire, a unit of erstwhile Dolphin Group, it brings together a contemporary sensibility, and yet keeps alive the individuality of the owner. The brief was to retain a modern appeal, and yet give the apartment a sense of space. The use of colour palettes like whites, greys, hues of yellow and certain sections of tile work gives a playful element to the minimalist design. The basic layout of the space conceived is a fusion of contemporary design, using clean straight lines and along with elements of industrial furniture. Yet, the apartment also retains touches of individuality and splashes of colour. The original penthouse doors have been replaced by glass doors throughout the apartment to enhance the view of the Aravalli Hills. The placement of the glass doors also employs the penthouse as environment friendly as JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015 • DESIGN MATRIX 119

Chic and classy, ‘The Design Cell’ is not just a boutique, it is a home that translates the design sensibilities of Gauri Khan.
