Karim Rashid è una figura di spicco nei campi della moda, dell’arredamento di interni, dell’illuminazione, del design di prodotto e dell’arte. Per metà egiziano e per metà inglese, è nato al Cairo, cresciuto in Canada e attualmente lavora a New York. È noto per la sua sensibilità nel rendere il design più accessibile. Designer per un impressionante numero di clienti, da Alessi a Dirt Devil, da Umbra a Prada, da Miyake a Method, Karim sta radicalmente cambiando l’estetica del design del prodotto e la vera natura della cultura del consumatore. Le sue opere sono nelle collezioni permanenti di 14 musei in tutto il mondo, inclusi MoMa e SFMoMa ed espone le sue creazioni artistiche in diverse gallerie.

Karim Rashid is a leading figure in the fields of product and interior design, fashion, furniture, lighting and art. Born in Cairo, half Egyptian, half English, and raised in Canada, Karim now practices in New York. He is best known for bringing his democratic design sensibility to the masses. Designing for an impressive array of clients from Umbra to Prada, Miyake to Method, Karim is radically changing the aesthetics of product design and the very nature of the consumer culture. His work is in the permanent collections of 14 Museums worldwide including MoMA and SFMoMA and he exhibits art in various galleries.

Karim Rashid est un personnage qui a su se faire remarquer dans le domaine de la mode, de la décoration d’intérieurs, de l’illumination, du design de produit et de l’art. Moitié égyptien et moitié anglais, il est né au Caire, a grandi au Canada et vit actuellement à New York. Il est célèbre pour sa sensibilité et sa volonté de rendre le design plus accessible. Designer de nombreuses grandes marques, allant de Alessi à Dirt Devil, de Umbra à Prada, de Miyake à Method, Karim est en train de changer de façon radicale l’esthétique du design du produit et la vraie nature de la culture du consommateur. Ses oeuvres sont exposées de façon permanente dans 14 musées à travers le monde, dont le MoMa et SFMoma et il expose aussi ses créations artistiques dans plusieurs galeries.

MY PHI LOSOPHY I am interested in rethinking the banal, changing our commodity landscape and proposing new objects for new behaviors for diverse markets. I am interested in democratizing design; I am interested in getting the public to be in the moment (not the past). I am trying to do away with class, elitism, mass, and conventions. I am trying to eradicate high art and low art – I see one seamless world with no racial or economic differences. I hate the word “Taste”. I believe that design is extremely consequential to our daily lives. Where we impact physical, physiological and sociological behavior, by setting up conditions of human experience. I give birth to a multitude of things, both material and immaterial. These things can shape our lives. I believe my work is the study of alternatives and possibilities. Commodity that interfaces society and imbues beauty in the banal. I am an ‘artist of real issues’; everyday life mediates between industry and the user; between self-expression and desire, between production technologies and human social behavior. Products and furniture must deal with our emotional ground therefore increasing the popular imagination and experience. Diversity, variance, multiplicity, and change are part of the whole of constructs. Industrial Design is a creative act, a political act, and a physical act. A socially interactive and responsible process that is greater than the physical form itself; its result is manifested in aesthetic forms. The content inspired by all the possibilities of our contemporary conditions. Design shapes our personal and commercial environments and has great significance to culture, to our evanescent public memory. I think the most important element is that I attempt to design objects, products and spaces that create a sense of well being, the energy of our time informs a heightened experience, increases pleasure, and that has some nuance of originality or innovation.
