the mankind manifesto We like all people, but we love creative people most.

If you’re creative AND nice? Even better. We think design is super cool. But not that normal design-ness. Nope.

Pure, cool, mankind design.

You won’t find celebrities here. THEY DON’T BELONG.

And you won’t find trendy restaurants. In fact, they’re where the celebrities are.

We’d rather be eating Ramen and reading books. (Yeah, we’re smart, too.) And art? Yes, art you will find here. After all, design is inevitable.

celebrated. DESIGN FOR MANKIND.

ALL THE STUFF YOU’D HATE TO MISS

BY JACQUE LYNN SHILLER

Like fugitive paperdoll fashions from a Léger inspired landscape, MoonSpoon Saloon’s sublimely absurd line of crazyquilt rompers and billowing puffers escapes the ordinary. The label is the group effort of Copenhagen-based designer Sara Sachs, artist Tal R, photographer Noam Griegst, and stylist Melanie Buchgave. Each child-like image is worthy an audience at a surrealist ball – an exclusivity craftily fostered by the collaborators. Only 99 styles will be made in 99 unique, individually documented editions. The new owner then continues the eclectic parade, donning a true wearable piece of art. Thirsty for more of the foursome’s quirky sense of humor, we went directly to the Saloon to talk of friends, life and indecipherable valentine cards...

once in a moonspoon//

Q: How large a role has friendship played in the MoonSpoon Saloon collaboration? A: Every time I meet with Sara, we talk about her shoes. When I meet with Noam, we talk about sex. It made sense to start a fashion company together. Q: How did you meet? A: In love, vanity and a common passion. Q: Is there a “time out” plan in place if anyone is in a bad mood? In other words, how are you able to work together so much? A: We don’t work so much. Well, Sara does. Noam is lazy and Tal is busy with his paintings. Q: Friends you admire? A: Peter Doig is at the top of his tropical game.

Q: Best place to hold “the talk”? A: At sea. Q: What songs would be on your “Let’s Just be Friends” mixtape? A: “Sailing” by Rod Stewart Q: Can exes remain friends? A: We have exes within the firm. Q: Is it ever okay to break up via text or email? A: NO Q: What would your “Let’s Just be Friends” valentine card look like / say? A: A tree and a penis.

Q: Name a deal breaker or what tips the balance between someone being a potential lover or just a friend? A: The tips of shoes.

Q: If your clothing line were a pick-up line, what would it be? A: Towels and socks.

Makes no sense to me either, but perhaps that’s the point. The MoonSpoon makers clearly enjoy stitching and weaving together their own amusing universe, but invite others to play. Whether creating clothes or art or an amalgamation of the two, it’s always Happy Hour at this Saloon. Drink up! [Jacque is an assembler of words and the jewelry line triggerhappy. She can kick freakishly high and prefers her coffee iced, even in winter.]

just friends?// ALL “JUST” ASIDE, WE’D LOVE TO E-FRIEND THESE TALENTED FOLKS.

buamai.com In Thai, buamai translates to ‘are you bored?’ A massive image library posted by a closed collective, this site is the younger, more exclusive club to the hotspot Ffffound. We think you’ll Llllove. londonshopfronts.tumblr.com A well-curated look at yes, London shop fronts. Perfect for a rainy weekend, this site gives you a virtual hop across the pond, without the added airfare. thephotographicdictionary.org Yep, you guessed it. Looking for a photo of a bra? The Photographic Dictionary takes the guesswork out of your tedious photo searches. We like to call it Google and Flickr’s lovechild, but shh, don’t tell their parents. oh.ungtblod.com Still walking around in shame from your recent blunder? At Oh, your mistakes will be set free. All in a lovely, minimalist-designed manner. imgspark.com Like tumblr, but with moodboard-abilities, Image Spark takes the guesswork out of locating that tear sheet from November. stackmagazines.com We read an awful lot here at Mankind headquarters. But our favorite reads just happen to be our independent pub friends, which can become very costly. Stack saves us dollars and time, sending us the very best indie pubs directly to our mailbox. Our mailman totally hates us. graphic-exchange.com We could spend all day here, and we pretty much do. A collection of inspiring works from graphic design students and professionals across the globe. It’s like your 8a.m. graphic design class in university that you always managed to wake up for. [Almost always, I presume.]
