Furniture, graphic design and other digital content was at the core of this proyect. Inspired by the joint greeko-italian heritage of its owners, the brand was worked to be clean graphical work , honest materials and a dash of nostalgia.

>3 months immersed in the “Kinkara Lifestyle”; moved to Perez Zeledón to start the development of the design applications within the main project’s grounds. Signage and environmental graphics around the area tie in with the energy-centric experience Kinkara was envisioned to be. Furniture design as well as interior design applications and items to be help tie everything together. The project was done alongside an international team to deliver a well-rounded adventure that also took into consideration giving back to the regional native tribes.

Marriot Vacation Cluc is being developed in Costa Rica next to the current “Marriot Los Sueños”. I worked on signage for both projects taking the “Hacienda” latin-american aesthetic and the nature that surrounds the project as inspiration.

Creating a system, one that combines a design language with practical modulation guides. Of the many iterations and explorations we find that for this language of elegant simplicity, you only need really beautiful wood, white clear letters and simple evocative diagonals that bring the design forward.

The combination of all these elements creates opportunities for incredible flexibility in material and pattern combinations that are naturally elegant.

SHADES

In Colonial legacy, wood was the technology that made sea travel possible, enabling the tradition of European timberwork to eventually reach American shores; this evolved into a highly recognizable rustic aesthetic, and our local forest woods only made this expression richer. Our wayfinding materials play tribute to the legacy of the Hacienda, of the agrarian. Crafted by extracting the essence of that elegance from the selection of different tones of timbers: a dark variant that recalls deep forest, native wood work, and the night, a caramelized variant that connects with European elegance, and a light contrasting variant that channels the new and refreshing.

INDUSTRIAL CRAFT

Each time has a way of craft. Great Colonial ships roamed the seas with exquisite handwork that required hundreds of hours and men, it appealed to a time of survival and expansion; highly illustrative and ornamental languages expressed this domination of man over nature. Modernism with its simple lines and geometry created a new language of elegance and civility, abstract nuance became king and industrial production replaced craft. Design today requires local character and international language, craft and industry. Our wayfinding system brings forth the best of both worlds, recognizing human materials that are warm local and rich, treated in an industrial manner of material savings and efficiency.

> Our process for this “Hacienda by the Sea” evokes three design principles: tropical rustic, elegance in craft and geometric simplicity. Real forest wood that should be both sustainably sourced and representative of Costarrican Pacific culture. An elegance that is not born out of ornamentation and flare but rather of: the material, the simplicity of craft, and hanwork that is balanced with machine production. Finally, clear, light and defined geomtric lines callout to illustrations that challenge our guests to decipher and explore.
