Disability Awareness Screening Untouchable and Welcome to Our World

150 mins 15A

“In this country we value history more than we value human rights.” “It’s the able bodied people that have the disability.” “I would love to be able to clamp every person never mind their cars, just so they can think for a minute.” These are just some of the opinions voiced by Galway-based wheelchair-users in the short film Welcome to our World. Galway is reputed to be a fun loving city for visitors and residents alike, but there is a darker side, one that is only encountered by wheelchair users, on a daily basis. Wheelchair ramps that go nowhere, no access to shops and amenities as historical preservation of buildings takes precedent over human rights, and a general public oblivious to the plight of wheelchair users are just the tip of the iceberg of a serious and all too often over-looked issue in our cities and towns. The Junior Galway Film Fleadh is proud to present a special screening of two films that deal with the lives of wheelchair users: the award-winning French feature Untouchable (French language screening see page 3 for details) and the powerful short Welcome to Our World (Ireland 2012, Margaretta D’Arcy). These films will enlighten, provoke, entertain and challenge young audiences. The screenings will be followed by a discussion which will give our audience a chance to have their say on the issues raised in the films and suggest ways they can help to make a difference.
