Snapping turtles can live up to 60 years and are known for their fierce, menacing behavior. They are found in lakes, ponds, marshes and slow-moving streams. Female snapping turtles have been known to journey 10 miles to reach traditional nesting areas and many hatchlings fall prey to raccoons, skunks, snakes, bullfrogs, herons, and other large birds. Snapping turtles are most obvious on land, basking or nesting and June is the best time to spot them. Snapping turtles overwinter under the muddy bottom of their watery home, so they are generally not seen from November to late March.

EHV

Largely nocturnal, the snapping turtle is omnivorous – about a third of their diet consists of plants, but they are also aggressive predators often burying itself in the mud with only its nostrils and eyes showing, waiting for unsuspecting prey. Snapping turtles have a hooked beak which can slice through the flesh and bones of its prey (small aquatic invertebrates, crayfish, snails, fish, frogs, snakes, small mammals, and water birds). Their snap is so powerful it can easily sheer fingers – so stay a safe distance away!

®

The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is a large freshwater turtle adopted as the State Reptile of New York in 2006 after being popularly chosen by the state’s public elementary school children. The snapping turtle (average weight over 35 lbs, their shells exceeding 18”) has a small shell that does not cover its limbs or tail (snapping turtles cannot retract their heads under the shell). The upper shell is tan, brown, black or light gray with three ridges, called keels and a long tail with jagged saw-toothed ridges.

The Charm of Bed & Breakfasts in the Hudson Valley “Cozy, comfortable and sincere service”, that’s what makes the warmth and charm of a Bed and Breakfast. That along with historic estates, wineries, quaint river towns and majestic scenery makes the Hudson Valley a magical place. The Hudson Valley has long been known for its scenic beauty, historic homes, cultural attractions and fascinating history. It provides an enchanting landscape of mountains, rivers, rolling vineyards and apple orchards that for centuries has inspired artists and authors and the birthplace of many stories and legends. If you’re looking to soak up local culture, B&B’s are a popular less-touristy attraction that gives travelers a unique and personalized travel experience with a personal touch of service, hospitality and flavor. Generally, when arriving at a B&B, you will be warmly greeted and often offered a tour and a brief history of the house. Many of these homes serve as mini-museums of an era in history. In the morning, a hearty breakfast is usually served. B&B’s are also known for being in areas where wineries are present and the Hudson Valley has over 19 wineries to sample from. In fact, some B&B’s offer complimentary wine and cheese hours which has become common in the industry. The history of B&B’s dates back over 100 years ago when travelers were looking for a place to stay between destinations. As more inns, lodges and hotels were built in the 1900’s, B&B’s were seen as an affordable accommodation for people traveling through small towns or in areas that weren’t that heavily populated. B&B’s enjoyed a renaissance in popularity in the latter half of the 20th century by many college students and young adults who traveled through Europe. B&B’s became the charming and quaint alternative and remain competitive in today’s lodging industry. Many of them choose to offer amenities for today’s traveler such as: free internet, cable TV, private baths, romantic packages and spa services. In addition to offering an upgraded range of amenities, many B&B’s take it upon themselves to alert guests to local events, fine dining, breweries and many other local happenings. That along with home-baked goods, roses, wine and chocolates, in-room intimate dining by candlelight, hot tubs, Jacuzzi’s and massages is why many choose the B&B experience. Travelers also like the atmosphere, comfort and coziness a B&B evokes; no wonder why many return to their favorite. Visitors also appreciate innkeepers who are glad to help them find the most romantic spot in the area, nearby park or other historic points of interest in the area. Many who come back choose a B&B for a wedding and family or small corporate function. Here in the Hudson Valley, in Rockland County, Bricktown Inn B&B on the banks of Haverstraw was built in the mid 1800’s. It is a brick mansard colonial home which belonged to a prominent Haverstraw family who owned several brickyards. The Historic Village of Haverstraw was known as the ”Brickmaking Capitol of the World” and many of the buildings in New York City were built from bricks made in Haverstraw in the 1800’s. The area is home to the Haverstraw Brick Museum, close to Nyack, Piermont, West Point Military Academy, Bear Mt. State Park, Stonypoint Battlefield, Woodbury Premium Common Outlets and many

other historic points along the Hudson River. Their porch is an excellent place to relax with a glass of lemonade. Victorian Teas with finger sandwiches and endless desserts are also a feature at this B&B. The Bricktown Inn has a wonderful garden and bridal packages are available. In Westcheser County, Alexander Hamilton House in Croton-on-Hudson offers Victorian ambiance with modern amenities and is named after the historical figure in the Hudson Valley. Some rooms have fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. A scrumptious home-made breakfast is provided and wonderful restaurants nearby. They offer in-room candlelight dinner for 2, fresh flowers, fruit and cheese plates, chocolate covered strawberries, in-room massages, in-ground swimming pool, picnic baskets, lawn chairs and more. Dogs are now also accepted. With easy access to historic homes, West Point, Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Kykuit, Woodbury Premium Outlets, Wineries, hiking and biking, The Alexander Hamilton House is a wonderful location. In Putnam County, Pig Hill Inn is an intimate B&B in Cold Spring on the Hudson and known for privacy and romance for a weekend or longer. This historic Inn was built in 1825, and is decorated with antiques and high quality reproduction period pieces which include a wicker sleigh bed. A majority of the rooms have fireplaces and wood burning stoves. All have private baths and two boast Jacuzzi tubs. Great for a romantic getaway or to relax after a day of hiking at nearby Breakneck Ridge. A full country breakfast is served which you can enjoy in the peaceful garden terrace amidst Irises and Lilies of the Valley or can be served in their glass Victorian Conservatory which is breathtaking during a snowfall. In Orange County, Storm King Lodge in Cornwall was a carriage house for a busy farm and estate dating back to the early 1800’s and was converted to a guest house in the 1920’s. Guests can relax outside on a converted verandah on warm summer nights or the great room offers a roaring fire on a winter evening. A gourmet country buffet breakfast is offered. Massages are also available by appointment. This is a popular country getaway for romance, hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, weddings and small gatherings. In Ulster County, Onteora Mountain House is an acclaimed B&B in the Catskill Mountains 8 miles from Woodstock in Boiceville. This was once the summer home of Richard Hellman, the mayonnaise mogul, who took occupancy in the 1930’s. A pine studded promontory overlooks the Esopus Valley surrounded by 250 acres of forest preserve. The centerpiece of the house is a 20 x 40 foot Great Room with cathedral ceiling, massive stone fireplace and picture window which captures the view down the river. A 60 foot dining porch with Adirondack-style tree trunk columns and railings wraps around the Great Room. Downstairs features a grotto like game room with championship pool table, sauna, and koi pond. Ourdoors offers classic twig gazebo and garden paths trail around the grounds. Fedor’s Short Escapes calls this “one of the most beautiful locations of any B&B in the world”. The Onteora Mountain House is a popular wedding destination. In Dutchess County, Journey Inn B&B in Hyde Park is the center of the Great Estate Region. Located across from the Vanderbilt Mansion and close to FDR’s home and Presidential Library. Arthur Frommer of Frommer’s Review says “exceedingly friendly and very comfortable”. The 5 guest rooms pay homage to the Roosevelts and Vanderbilts by reflecting places they loved best. Historic sites, wineries, restaurants and things to do are all in the area. Written by Melissa Tyler

Cruising the Hudso Hudson on Long L ong before before English Engl ngliish h explorer Henry nry Hudson Hudso Hu d n sailed d up the h Hudson River Rive er in in 1609 1609 for the 16 the Dutch h East East India Indiia Ind Company the waterway was a major travel route for Native Americans. The river opened trade routes north to Canada and west to the Great Lakes. Until the Mississippi Valley was settled two centuries later, the Hudson was America’s most prominent and profitable waterway with a history of commerce, transportation, culture and recreation. From the beginning, thousands of visitors traveled its waters for its dramatic scenery and the Palisades, Hudson Highlands and the Catskills became renowned around the world. It became a popular subject for artists and writers with its convenience to the port of New York. The region evokes images of grandeur and power as the jewel of the Empire State. The Hudson Valley provides a rich history of Dutch and German immigrants, aristocratic palaces and private estates with industry-friendly river towns extending 315 miles from the Adirondack Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. Inventor Robert Fulton inaugurated a new era of water navigation in 1807 by piloting his North River Steamboat on the Hudson River (later known as the “Clermont”). In 1820, the Erie Canal connected the Hudson to the Great Lakes and soon after Delaware & Hudson Canal linked the river to Pennsylvania coal fields supplying the raw materials and fuel that transformed New York City into a great American Metropolis. Water transportation and travel were at a peak in 1850 when railroads began to compete for freight and passengers. Tourists came from all parts of the United States and Europe to see the Hudson. It was an important leg in trips to Saratoga Springs, the Adirondacks, Niagara Falls and Canada as well as destinations in the Catskills where many tourist hotels were located. West Point and other revolutionary war sites were as popular in the 19th century as they are today. But for most visitors, it was the regions natural scenery and splendid river houses that were the main attractions; these sites were best appreciated from the water. Passenger boats became larger and faster as the century advanced and eventually the 150 mile trip from New York City to Albany was made in a single day. While foreign travelers tended to head through the region, the Hudson River hosted a tremendous number of New Yorkers looking to escape the city and engage with nature. Overnight and long-term visitors stayed in hotels in the Palisades and Hudson Highlands, two of the more dramatic scenic areas in close proximity to the city. Today several narrative boat tours cruise in the area from May to October giving different historic tours and prospectives of the area. Hudson Highland Tours cruises from West Point, H Haverstraw and Peekskill on the M/V Commander H which was built in 1917 and is listed on the National w and an State registers of historic places. In 1918, the Commander was leased by the U.S. Navy and assigned C to the Brooklyn Navy Yard to outfit submarine chasers and an two barrage balloons to protect the Rockaway Air Station from German Zeppelins. The Commander has S the distinction of being the last operating vessel that th served in battleship “Texas” and the battle cruiser “Olympic “as d in i the h U.S. U S Navy N i WWI and d jjoins i the h b the only remaining ships from that era. She displays the WWI Victory Medal as a token of her service. Historical narration tours are available as well as brunch, lunch, cocktails and dinner cruises. The boat is available for weddings and family and corporate functions with a capacity of 125. The River Rose is an authentic New Orleans paddle wheeler currently used as a tour boat out of her home port in Newburgh. She is fully inspected and approved by the U.S. Coast Guard for 150 passengers plus crew. Featuring two decks, a dining room, two dance floors, two fully stocked bars and two outdoor observation

decks. Sightseeing, Brunch and Dinner cruises are offered as well as dance party cruises. The boat is available for charters, weddings and private parties. Hudson River Adventure Tours offers several sightseeing g tours from Newburgh and Beacon. This is a 2nd generation n family owned business founded in 1993. They work in n conjunction with The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. and d in cooperation with The New York State Office of Parks, s, Recreation & Historic Preservation offering exclusive guided d walking tours on Bannerman Island via the Pollepel. The e tour is 2.5 hours long with departures from both Beacon and d Newburgh. This is the source of your official guided walking g tour for the history of Bannerman Island (also known ass Pollepel Island). Hudson River Adventure Tours also offers tours on the “Pride of the Hudson” providing views of the majestic Highlands from Newburgh Landing, as well as views of Washington Headquarters, Mount Beacon, Bannerman Island, Breakneck Mountain, Cold Spring, Constitution Island, West Point and World’s End; the deepest point in the Hudson River. Air Conditioning is available on the lower level of the “Pride of the Hudson”. The Boat is available for charter and private functions. Narrative cruises are ar available as well as Happy Hour, Sunset, and Fireworks. Fi A bit further up the Hudson is Hudson River Cruises in Kingston. For over 30 years Hudson River Cruises has ha provided passengers with a firsthand view of the th historic shoreline from the decks of the “Rip Van Va Winkle”. This narrative 2 hour tour points out Va millionaires’ estates, picturesque lighthouses and m quaint sleepy villages surrounded by the natural qu beauty of vineyards, orchards and scenic preservation sites. Sunset cruises, music and murder mystery dinner cruises, wedding and private party charters are available. They also offer a water taxi called “The Lark” with close-up tours of the Rundout Lighthouse. Favorite sites on this tour include the Rondout, Esopus Meadows Lighthouse, and Wyndcliff Mansion, one of the most opulent and extravagant homes on the east shore of the Hudson. This mansion was built for Elizabeth Schermerhorn Jones and was so extraordinary that it inspired the now often used expression “keeping up with the Jones”! Other waterfront mansions that marked the height of the Industrial Revolution’s success are Dinsmore built in 1936 for Mr. & Mrs. Lytell Hull. Mrs. Hull was the former Mrs. Vincent Astor and daughter-in-law of John Jacob Astor, the wealthiest man in America at the time of his death aboard the Titanic in 1912. You’ll also see majestic views of Wilderstein, the Victorian mansion remodeled and enlarged in 1888 and beloved home to Miss Margaret (Daisey) Stuckely, The Vanderbilt Mansion, Payne Mansion once owned by Col. Oliver Hazard Payne, the treasurer of Standard Oil of New Jerseyy (now ( Exxon)) and a founder of US Steel Company. The newest cruise line on the Hudson is Empire Cruise Liness which departs Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie. Empire Cruise e Lines is part of Seaway Navigation and Tours, Ltd. which is a family owned business with roots in New York. The vessel wass originally built in 1977, at Baldwinsville Boat Yard and served d under the name P/V Uncas in the Fulton Chain of Lakes in n the Adirondack Mountains. Empire Cruises offers sightseeing, g, brunch, lunch, wine and dinner cruises on the M/V Mystere e under towering bridges including the Walkway over the e Hudson, gilded age mansions and picturesque mountains. It is also docked near a leisurely walk from Metro North Railroad in Poughkeepsie. Return to the romantic days when steamships cruised the great Hudson River taking families and business travelers from across the world for unforgettable journeys along the river. They offer a menu tailored to the seasons and meals created by the best chefs in the region. Written by Melissa Tyler

The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a true “living” museum of antique aviation located in Rhinebeck and celebrating their 53rd year. It is home to one of the world’s greatest collections of flying pioneer, WW-I, and Lindbergh era airplanes. The aerodrome features aeroplanes, automobiles, motorcycles, early engines and memorabilia from 1900-1935. The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome was the life’s work of Cole Palen and his dream to preserve early aviation started over a half century ago in 1959. The Museum’s four buildings are open weekdays, 10am-5pm, starting on May 12th, and features static displays of aircrafts from the Pioneer Era, World War I and the Lindbergh Barnstorming Era. These were the golden years of aviation! Group tours are available by prior arrangement as are biplane rides and special events. The 2012 air show opening day is Saturday, June 9th. Gates open and biplane rides begin at 10am and the air show starts at 2pm. Air shows are on weekends thru October 14th weather permitting. On these weekends the aerodrome turns back the hands of time and relives the years of early aviation. Saturday shows chronicle the History of Flight with Pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh era aircrafts. Sunday shows feature a World War I dogfight plus Barnstorming aircrafts. Pre-Show activity includes a vintage fashion show for the kids, an old-time automobile parade and the thrill of experiencing rides in a classic 1929 New Standard open cockpit biplane. See the beauty of the Hudson River Valley in a Barnstorming flight scenic tour available before and after the show. For more information visit www.oldrhinebeck.org or call (845) 752-3200. Relocating to the Hudson Valley Have you considered relocating to the Hudson Valley region? You should! Perhaps your job requires a move or you’re just looking for a fresh start. You might be an urban resident who has been dreaming of buying a Hudson Valley home for a long time. Or maybe you need a great place to raise a family while remaining close to your career in the big city. Let’s not forget 1st time home buyers and the new generation of home owners, for whom rock climbing and organic food are just as important as culture and an active night-life. There are also the newly-retired and empty-nesters looking to downsize and relax in a quaint country home. Regardless of why you may be relocating, the Hudson Valley area is full of diverse and affordable housing for any lifestyle. Close proximity to New York City combined with some of the most breathtaking vistas in the North East are what make Hudson Valley real estate so attractive to anyone looking for a new home! What Does the Hudson Valley have to offer? Living in the Hudson Valley region combines the best of both worlds: the tranquility of the country and the vibrancy of nearby urban centers. For active people who love the outdoors, the Hudson Valley is a virtual playground just waiting to be explored. Our rivers, mountains, fields, & trails offer endless activities during any season. Speaking of the seasons, have you ever seen the Catskills burst with fall colors in the autumn months? Or kicked back on a boat with just a fishing rod and the hazy summer sun? Maybe you like to race down snow covered hills on skis or sleds. Or perhaps paradise to you is a morning walk on a solitary trail as spring begins to bloom. The natural beauty of the Hudson Valley is unparalleled and provides a backdrop for endless outdoor fun! It is the ideal environment to raise a family, maintain a healthy lifestyle, or simply to kick back and relax! Live in the country, stay connected to the city. It’s no wonder that homes for sale in the Hudson Valley are so desirable among those who live and/or work in New York City. Whether you drive or take public transportation, it’s easy to get in and out of the Big Apple from the Hudson Valley. That short commute can take you worlds away from the hustle and bustle and you’ll be amazed such a place exists so close to “The city” as we call it here. The proximity to New York benefits the Hudson Valley as well, giving the region a constant stream of arts, culture, and cuisine from the greatest city on Earth. What doesn’t the Hudson Valley have to offer? That is the real question! Wondering how to relocate to the Hudson Valley? It’s easy! First you find the community or town that’s just right for you. This can be done through asking friends, exploring the mountains and trails, or indulging in the many local restaurants and shops throughout the region. Each town has its own unique style, bonded by a shared sense of community and love of the area. Next step for those considering making a move upstate; work with an agent who understands what you’re looking for. These agents are easily identified by their keen listening skills and vast knowledge of local markets. Finally, make yourself at home! The greatest thing about living in the Hudson Valley is that you’re free to live as you please. Start a business or start a family, run free or lay low. No matter your reason for relocating to the Hudson Valley, rest assured you’ve found yourself a place you can surely call home! From its modest beginnings on a patch of land in Gainesville, Florida in the early 80s to hosting some of the world’s best show jumping this year, HITS Horse Shows is rooted firmly in the heart of the Hudson Valley. After running small horse shows at his own Rose View Stables in Poughkeepsie, New York since 1977, HITS President & CEO, Tom Struzzieri moved his operation to Ellenville, New York in the early 90s and then settled in Saugerties, New York in 2004. Later deemed HITS-on-the-Hudson, the Saugerties property soon gave birth to the world’s largest horse show management company. Today, Struzzieri’s brainchild runs the gamut, attracting equestrian stars, Olympic hopefuls and pony pals all to the Hudson Valley. In 2010, HITS Horse Shows again revolutionized American show jumping with the announcement of the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix – the largest prize purse ever to be offered for one class. The buzz surrounding the Pfizer Million attracted the world’s best Grand Prix riders to the Hudson Valley to vie for a piece of $1 million. In 2011, HITS coupled the famed Pfizer Million with the all-new Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and will add the $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final to the crown jewel of the HITS Saugerties show series – HITS Championship Weekend September 7-9, 2012. The event is sure to energize the sport of show jumping as well as provide a weekend of world-class equestrian competition in the Hudson Valley. “After seeing the response and success that we’ve had with the Million and the $500,000 Hunter Prix Final, it’s clear that these events are revitalizing the sport and exciting our customers,” said Tom Struzzieri, HITS President and CEO. “We are creating new opportunities for an audience of riders who, until now, didn’t have the chance to compete in a year-end final of this magnitude. I feel strongly that, through these programs, we are rebuilding and establishing a new level of show jumping.” Even in the weeks preceding HITS Championship Weekend, HITS Saugerties boasts one of the largest horse shows in the country and provides a picturesque getaway for the whole family, welcoming both visitors and Hudson Valley locals to the show grounds. Throughout the summer, various special events welcome guests to HITS-on-the-Hudson, including the ever-popular Purina Mills Kids Day Sunday, June 10, 2012, which features a horseless horse show, pony rides and fun for all ages. For a complete list of upcoming special events at HITS-on-the-Hudson and for more information about HITS Championship Weekend, including VIP seating, ticket sales and entertainment, please visit www.
