New College Manchester? Welcome to New College Manchester. Our college is located in Central Manchester and has a great reputation amongst international students for quality teaching, friendly staff and great facilities. Fully refurbished in April 2012, the college has brand new classrooms so you can enjoy life as a student in a modern and truly friendly environment. Our college is in the very heart of Manchester near many shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels. We are a short walk from Piccadilly Gardens, China Town, and Manchester Central Library, along with Piccadilly train station and major tram and bus links. The teachers at NCM are qualified to teach their specialised subjects. All of our staff are very approachable and students therefore feel at ease. Many of our teachers have lived abroad so they understand the needs of foreign students.

Manchester is the third-most visited city in the UK by foreign visitors. It is a very multicultural city, and home to a population of many nationalities and cultures. Manchester has over 100,000 students across four universities, therefore having the biggest population of students in Europe. It has excellent transport links to many cities across the UK. Its geographical location means that it is close to major cities of the UK such as Leeds, Liverpool, York, Nottingham, Blackpool and Sheffield. It’s a cost effective city compared to London which means that students get better value for their money and it is only 2 hours to London by train.

General English Course This course is for you, if: •

About the Course Our General English courses aim to improve your ability to use English by increasing your awareness of grammar structures and forms. You will study all language skills – speaking, listening, writing, reading. As well as English for international communication, we aim to include lots of natural (British) English, drawing on the local area and British culture. A large part of language ability is confidence, so our lessons are designed to build your confidence and provide you with lots of opportunities to use the English you are learning. What will I learn? During a typical week, your lessons will include work on: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing and Grammar. We use a wide range of methodologies, technologies, materials (including authentic materials) and resources to provide the most appropriate lessons possible for you and your classmates.

Intensive & Super-Intensive English Courses This course is the same as the General English course with 5 or 10 extra hours of module classes. Module classes are either topic-based, concentrating on skills needed to study/work in the UK, or IELTS exam-related. Intensive - 20 hours per week Super-Intensive - 25 hours per week Mix & Match Modules (5 hours per week) These modules will help to improve your speaking, reading, writing and listening in social or academic settings. We also run modules that concentrate on preparing for the IELTS exam.

Single Sex Classes General English classes can be provided as single-sex classes, based on a minimum of 6 students studying at the same level.

Each week your teacher will give you a Weekly Plan in your classroom showing what you will study that week.

Will I get a certificate? You will get a New College Manchester Certificate at the end of your course (if your attendance is above 80%).

Progress Your progress is assessed weekly by your class teacher. You will also have a tutorial every 5 weeks, when you can discuss your progress oneto-one with your teacher. When you are ready, you will progress to the next level that is appropriate for you. The average student takes 10-12 weeks to do this.

GENERAL ENGLISH MODULE(S)

Take control of your English study!

Our mix and match modules offer you the opportunity to target your learning to meet your specific needs and goals. The modules are 5 hours per week and fit perfectly with your main, 15 hours per week, course. Choose 1 or 2 of the following modules to study 20 or 25 hours per week. English Skills for Business (5 hours) This module aims to give you valuable skills to understand and communicate in an Englishspeaking business environment. You will learn about organisation structures, business models and markets and business skills such as negotiation, selling, leadership and management. IELTS (5 hours) The module is aimed at familiarising you with the format and requirements of the IELTS test and getting the IELTS score you want. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (5 hours) The English for Academic Purposes course aims to improve the English skills you need to succeed in an English-speaking university. You will learn vocabulary and grammar which are specifically required to achieve this so you will be able to express your ideas successfully in an academic way! Speaking & Listening (5 hours) Improve your conversational English by practising speaking, listening, pronunciation and vocabulary. You will practise your pronunciation to speak more clearly and be easily understood. It will also help your listening and make you a more effective and confident communicator. Reading & Writing (5 hours) Improve your reading and writing for daily life and also for study. Learn the spelling forms in English and understand how to write formal and informal English.

TOEFL Preparation Course

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a world recognised examination for measuring English proficiency.

Want to get a good score in the TOEFL test?

Our TOEFL course will help you prepare for all four sections of the TOEFL iBT and work on the academic English skills you need to succeed at an English-speaking university through: • • •

During each week, you will study and practise techniques and strategies for all parts of the TOEFL exam. You will take mock practice tests in the computer lab every week to build your confidence, help you prepare and track your progress.

About the Course The English for University course aims to prepare you to study in an English-speaking university. On this course you will learn how to maximise your chances of success at university. You will develop different academic skills that are essential for a degree studies. As well as studying IELTS, which builds your English study skills, you will also study English for Academic Purposes to develop your graduate-level English skills and prepare you for your university course. What will I learn? During each week, you will study and practise techniques and strategies for all parts of the IELTS exam, such as: Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing Task 1 and Writing Task 2.

Would you like to communicate better in English and succeed in a business environment?

This course aims to increase your understanding of business concepts and skills as well as equipping you with the English language skills you need to be successful in any business you choose! You will study 15 hours/week of General English and 5 hours/week of English Skills for Business. You will practice and develop interview and telephone skills, taking examples from real life business scenarios together with useful business language for meetings, sales, presentations and negotiations. A large part of language ability is confidence, so our lessons are designed to build your confidence and provide you with lots of opportunities to use the English you are learning. What will I learn? Trinity Exam Preparation Course NCM has a new language programme that prepares people for the Trinity College GESE Exam (Graded Examinations in Spoken English). The GESE is a spoken exam, testing your speaking and listening skills. GESE preparation classes are designed to increase your confidence and accuracy in spoken English and to improve your listening comprehension skills. At the same time that you apply for your preparation course you can also register for the GESE exam at NCM, a registered Trinity College Examinations Centre. One benefit of taking the GESE exam is that the results are available to candidates on the same day as the exam, with certificates arriving a few weeks later. Please note, the exam fee is not included. Prices are available on request. Please contact NCM for details.

Make friends at NCM! Social activities will give you an opportunity to practise your English in real situtations, experience British culture, and make many friends from around the world.

At NCM we offer free career counselling and university placement advice.

NCM offers a wide range of activities in the mornings and afternoons. Join us! Airport Pick up The college can arrange for a taxi to pick you up from Manchester airport and to take you to your required destination. We are also able to offer transfer services from other airports within a 1 hour drive from Manchester. These include Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Leeds Bradford Airport. General Advice We are always here to assist you if you need any help with police registration, banking, medical, personal insurance or accommodation while studying at NCM.

Our education consultancy centre can help you to secure a place on Undergraduate and Postgraduate study programmes in over 50 universities in the UK. Conversation Club If you would like to improve your English speaking skills you can join our Conversation Club every Tuesday. It is a great opportunity to chat to other international students, learn new vocabulary, exchange ideas and give opinions. And of course, make new friends! Skills Sessions At NCM we offer free skills workshops in order to help you to increase your chances for success. Study at home using the extra materials for your level. 2. Connect with other students via Facebook & Twitter. 3. Sign up for all our social activities. 4. Make requests for letters, holidays, academic appointments or course extensions. Any requests for letters will be answered in 24 hours.

Accommodation NCM offers a wide range of accommodation including living with a British family, sharing with other students in residential halls or living independently in an apartment or hotel. We understand how important your accommodation is and this is why all of your accommodation is carefully checked by our college Accommodation and Welfare Officer to ensure that you are comfortable, safe and happy during your stay.

All students agree to be bound by the regulations, policies and procedures of New College Manchester Ltd (paper copies are available on request). 1) Payment of Fees 1.1 The tuition fee for your course will be as stated in the offer letter you received from New College Manchester Ltd. 1.2 In order to register for your course, at least 50% of the course fees must be paid before visa documents are issued. This must be done no later than 21 days before arrival. Any airport transfers, accommodation or tuition details will not be confirmed unless payment has been received. 1.3 Students and their parents or guardians, agree to pay the tuition fees and other charges applicable for the course. It is understood and agreed that failure to do so may result in withdrawal from the course and cancellation of the enrolment. The remaining 50% of fees must be paid before starting classes (this applies to all courses at NCM). 1.4 In order for accommodation to be booked by NCM, depending on the type of accommodation chosen, 4 weeks homestay accommodation must be paid and full residential accommodation must be paid in advance. 2) Services 2.1 The company reserves the right to change details of its advertised services, courses, facilities and course dates where circumstances beyond the company’s control necessitate such changes or where the number of enrolments is not enough to operate a course viably. 2.2) In the unlikely event that the College is unable to deliver your course in full, you may be offered enrolment in a suitable alternative course by the College at no extra cost. You have the right to choose whether you would prefer to cancel the course (terms and conditions apply), or to accept a place on another course. A minimum of six students are required for English Language courses to run. If there are less than four students, alternative arrangements will be made. This may mean reduced hours, or the class will be merged with another class. 3) Course Entry Requirements 3.1 All courses at New College Manchester have entry requirements including minimum age and language – see each course for details.

7) Classes at NCM 7.1 NCM reserves the right to change an advertised course. 7.2 NCM reserves the right to cancel any advertised course. 7.3 In the event of a course being cancelled by NCM, the student will be offered an alternative course/dates or a full refund. 7.4 NCM reserves the right to adapt students’ timetables. 7.5 NCM strives to ensure a diverse nationality mix, however this is subject to seasonal bookings. 7.6 NCM reserves the right to change any teacher in any class. 7.7 NCM closely monitors students’ progression and if the academic team feel that the students’ English level is not suitable for the course they have booked, NCM reserves the right to move the student to a suitable level. 7.8 In order for students to obtain a certificate for the completion of their course, students must obtain an attendance rate of 80% or above. Reports can be provided at the discretion of NCM, for those students whose attendance rate was lower than 80%. 8) Attendance 8.1 Students are obliged to attend all of their classes on their timetable and NCM is not responsible if the student chooses to miss any class time. Failing to attend without good reason will lead to expulsion from the college with no tuition or accommodation refund. Tier4 students will be reported to the UKBA. 8.2 Students must arrive to class before the start time on their schedule and should arrive back from breaks promptly. 8.3 If a student consistently arrives late to class, the student will be expelled from the college with no tuition or accommodation refund. 9) Progression 9.1 Progression at the end of any given term is dependent on successfully passing all modules in that term and fulfilling the academic criteria. 10) Cancellations and Refund policy Course cancellation fee Before arrival:

3.2 If any information provided in the application is incorrect, NCM reserve the rights to make the necessary changes to the students’ enrolment at the student’s expense and if necessary, ask the students to leave their course and accommodation without any refunds.

10.1 Notice of cancellation must be made in writing. Failure to provide written notification will lead to charges being made.

4) Changes to Enrolments

10.3 If a course is cancelled less than 28 days before arrival, 50% of the course fee will be charged.

4.1 All changes made to confirmed accommodation or course bookings will lead to a £50 administration fee, unless the student is extending the course or booking additional courses. 5) Changes to Airport Transfers 5.1 Notification of change to airport transfers must be sent to our Admissions team at least 2 full working days prior to the designated arrival time. If notice is not received, full charges will apply. 6) Academic Progression

10.2 If a course is cancelled more than 28 days before arrival, a £100 administration fee for EFL and £200 for International Foundation Year will be charged.

10.4 If a course is cancelled less than 7 days before arrival, no refund will be offered. After arrival: 10.5 When a student commences a course they are expected to complete that course as stipulated in their offer letter. In the event that a student withdraws from a course, no refunds will be made in the following cases:

6.1 Students are accepted into New College Manchester Ltd on the strict understanding that progression through the course is conditional upon satisfactory attendance and successful target attainment.

10.6 A student decides to withdraw or leave early from their course programme

6.2 Students are formally assessed on a regular basis. The assessment will take into consideration: coursework assignments, internal examination results, attendance and commitment to study.

10.8 A student breaches the code of conduct resulting in expulsion.

6.3 Students who do not meet the assessment criteria will not be allowed to proceed with their original course. Students will will be offered an alternative course or withdrawn from New College Manchester Ltd without a refund.

10.7 A student withdraws from course due to poor attendance or academic progress 10.9 In exceptional circumstances refunds of the remaining tuition fees can be agreed at the discretion of the Managing Director, please read policy on exceptional circumstances.
