From the Editor

School Uniform – From the beginning of the summer holidays the new school uniform will be available to purchase from Direct4Schools.

Summer seems to be well and truly with us. What lovely weather we’ve been having! I for one feel better when the sun is shining and the days are longer. It seems to generally lift my mood to a slightly different level than during the winter months when it’s dark at 5:00pm. I tend to think about time in segments; it’s something I began doing after reading a research paper whilst I was at university back in 2003. For example, my work day begins at 8:00am and finishes at 5:00pm. At 8am, I think about what I need to get done by 10am. I then do the same from 10am until 12pm, segmenting my day into 2 hour slots until 4pm. I then have an hour to wind down and get everything ready for the next day at 8am. This technique is remarkable in making my work day go by very quickly. My point is that I also use the same technique to help me get through the winter months. End of September is my eldest daughter’s birthday, October Hallowe’en, November Fireworks, December Christmas, January my birthday, February my wife’s birthday, March is then here and Spring nearly upon us. Excellent! Here’s hoping the sun stays with us for a good few weeks yet!

Farewell - Farewell to Mr Stratton, who heads off to a new school for new challenges and to Mrs Reilly, who will be starting her training to become a teacher. We’d like to wish you both well for the future.

Martin Hailwood-Thomas - Editor Awbridge News

From the Chairman’s Pen A big thank you to all of you who turned out for the Annual General Meeting and the ideas that were discussed on how we can improve the village. If you were not able to attend please leave your comments on the village web site or give a member of the committee a telephone call. As we have said before we are always keen to hear of any projects that might increase the village amenities. Schedules for the village show in September are now available from any committee member or give me a ring on 340709. Welcome to all the new people who have moved in to the village over the last few weeks. If you have not received your WELCOME PACK please give me a call on 340709.

Awbridge Village Produce Show I trust that you are getting ready to display your produce at the Village show on Saturday 6th September. As we now are enjoying the lovely sunny weather they will certainly need watering. There are also the jams and pickles to make, photos to take, and gentlemen, don’t forget to pick up an Exhibitors Schedule so that you can practice making the cheese scones. We hope that the children will also enter their classes. Whatever you decide to do we do hope you will take up the challenge. The schedules can be picked up from the village hall or Chanwel House, Romsey Road. Lynda Tucker

We hope you can join us in remembering the fallen and the devastation which followed. We have another special service on Sunday 3 August at 9 30 am when the service will include a special dedication of our new churchwarden staves given by Janet Ebourne in memory of her parents who lived at the Round House in Awbridge, and whose father was a churchwarden. Thank you to all those who came to the BBQ in July run jointly with Awbridge First Responders. We had a great time, great food and good fun and plenty of entertainment with water rockets! Thank you especially to all those who helped to provide the wonderful food. As we look forward to some relaxation and enjoy the summer holidays many in our world have little food or water, but thanks to you some can enjoy better water supplies through your support of Turn on the Tap through our collection of coins in water bottles. Thank you for collecting, these can be returned in time for our Harvest celebrations on 28 September. Messy Church has recently contributed £56 to this project so far. Update on Awbridge Village Plan A meeting about a proposed Village Plan was held on Thursday 3rd July 2014 in the Village Hall.

ROMSEY’S EXPERT PICTURE FRAMERS At 46, The Hundred, Romsey

01794 516479 www.firstfloorgallery.co.uk Est 1982

Fully qualified fine art trade guild commended framers expert framing advice and design service A family business built on reputation and success.

This meeting followed two public presentations, one in May 2013 and one in January 2014, by TVBC representatives who explained what a Plan would entail, plus a further public meeting in April 2014 when it was decided to promote the idea at the Village Fete and to send an information flyer to every household in Awbridge. Together these activities have provided several opportunities for residents to put forward what they would like to see developed or improved in the village, and overall a significant number of people have expressed an interest in helping to compile a Plan. The meeting on 3rd July was intended to set up a steering group to take some action on developing a Plan but it was attended by only five residents with a further three people sending apologies. This meant that a steering group could not be formed on the night, and as things stand the development of a Plan can not now move forward without interested people to create a structure to hold things together. A significant number of people have expressed interest in the development of a village Plan. If you were one of the people who expressed an interest in being involved, and you wish to take a lead role in forming a steering group please contact Paul Harvey on 01794 341259 or at paul.harveyp@gmail.com Help and support is available from Test Valley Council. Awbridge News July 2014 We have been reading with interest Past Times and History of road development in Awbridge and were surprised to see reference to our house, Halfcote, Danes Road in the final paragraph in July and would like to provide a little more information on its early role in the village. We have now lived at Halfcote for 47 years and in the early days I became friendly with a gentleman in Lockerley who when learning where I lived told me that was where he had been to school, at a cost to his parents of one shilling a week, he went on to say that there were at that time two schools in Awbridge. He also described a well on our boundary which apparently people came from way around to draw water. I had laid drains from the well covering it and grassing over so there was no sign of it but on coming to the house my friend walked directly to the precise location. Halfcote must have been a school for a considerable period as we have a print of a map dated 1871 which has the building, two small rooms at that time, shown on it marked ‘School (Boys & Girls)’. North of the house/school on the East side of Danes Road up to Romsey Road is shown as open land with no buildings, I recollect being told by someone that this land was called Jocey’s Common and that the school ceased operating as such in 1900 but I cannot substantiate these last two points.

The Long Walk The heart of summer has now arrived along with the Ramblers and Walkers. Walking has been the interest and hobby for many people over the years and in my opinion it is a great way to spend a few hours, days or even weeks if you are fit enough to put one foot in front of another. Of course there are various types of walkers. The serious walker enjoys the peace and tranquillity of the countryside and is conscious of not causing damage, leaving gates open or wandering on to private property. It is very tempting to take a short cut across a field when the official footpath goes right round the edge but the farmer may have taken several days preparing the field for a special crop that has just started to grow. Two or three pairs of size nine walking boots will not help the farmer or his crop, but the serious “Walker” would never consider taking a short cut anyway! The Ramblers or part time strollers drive into the village of their choice, park their vehicle or vehicles and wander off with their pack of sandwiches and flask of coffee. With luck the vehicles have been left in a proper car park or parking space and not outside somebody’s driveway or in an area that may cause difficulty for other drivers who live or work in the area and need to get past at some time during the day. The Ramblers invariably have some sort of plan having been, or read, about a country walk that takes in various places like a very old attractive church or pub and the only thing that may make them change their minds or choose a variation to their route is arriving at a field filled with cattle. A few old and docile cows can have a very adverse effect on walkers brought up in the towns or cities and I suspect at times the cattle have been put in the field for the express purpose of curtailing some of the ambitious ramblers in the first place. On a personal front I was, a few years ago, quite a serious walker. I had a good job which I enjoyed but it also allowed me to book a three weeks summer break. I had decided I would like to try and do the Coast to Coast walk from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay.... a two hundred miles stroll through some stunning countryside across the narrow part of Britain. I had read that on arriving at St Bees I had to walk to the waters edge, make sure the toes of my boots were in the sea ( just to prove to myself that I was as far West as I could go) then pick up a few pebbles from the beach before starting the trek to Robin Hoods Bay where, if I made it, I would walk into the water on the Eastern side of Britain and scatter the stones on that beach because the record books say that the coast, on the East, is eroding faster than the coast on the West! I think the official distance is given as one hundred and ninety miles but allowing for the fact there were times when I knew, and did, get lost or did a little detour to explore a village, church or several pubs, then I was walking well over the two hundred miles! There are various stories that can be picked up on route. For example I heard about two young soldiers who had run the whole distance in seventy two hours to break the fastest record time. I have no idea if that is true or even possible because for me it was a personal challenge. I was not on a sponsored money raising charity walk and I was not trying to break any records. I was doing the walk on my own. If I failed it was my failure and my ego that would suffer and it would have no effect on anyone else. I was surprised to find that it was, and still is, a well know world famous walk and many of the walkers I met, all going the same way, were from foreign parts of the world. At one point a very attractive fit and healthy German girl who spoke excellent English asked if she could join me for a while... ( now come on guys what would you have said?!) I was not looking for a walking companion but we did walk together for part of the day. I cannot remember which one of us stopped for a break first, I think it was the young lady, but it gave me an excuse to continue and I never saw her again.

After leaving St Bees, the countryside the walk takes you through includes the stunning Lake District, part of The Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. I am not suggesting it’s easy because when its hot, it’s very hot and the same applies to the cold, the wet and the wind. It is not possible in a limited space to describe the journey in detail but there are parts of the walk which appear to be all up hill and there are times when only being tenacious made me carry on. After nearly three weeks, in my case, to see the sea and know Robin Hoods Bay is just a short distance away at the end of, for me, a very long stroll was a wonderful feeling and when I was able to walk down and into the sea, and just to prove I could not walk any further, went ankle deep in the water, I knew my walk had ended. I would like to do the walk again but my wife, who thought I was foolish back in July, 1996, now has the added, and legitimate argument that I was eighteen years younger then and is convinced I would now get lost before even leaving St Bees... of course she may well be correct but I know the real reason is, she would miss me!!!!! To any walker, of whatever age, if you are fairly healthy and you have a few weeks to spare. I seriously recommend trying the Coast to Coast walk... There are many books on walking out there in the bookshops and The National Trust have some of the best, so if you prefer to stay in bed and read about walking, fine, but its a great feeling to plan, set up, and complete the walk either on your own or with a companion. Awbridge Pavilion

Awbridge Evening W.I. - July

The long term tenants of The Awbridge Pavilion at the Village Hall, have informed the Village Hall Committee of their intention to relocate.

At the July meeting we welcomed back Sandra Simmonds who gave us the third and final episode of her life story ‘ After Iran.’ This was a moving and inspiring account of how she overcame the difficulties she endured both during her marriage to an Iranian Naval officer, and after her divorce.

This means The Pavilion will became available for a NEW venture!! What about a SHOP! Is there a group of like minded villagers out there to start up a SOCIAL CLUB.. Can you imagine watching satellite sport with a beverage in your hand! Could this be a CRECHE/PLAYGROUP offering child care to young mums..

The Summer Buffet had been a great success, and proved a good way of getting to know other members. The trip to the Saville Gardens which included a trip on the River Thames had proved very enjoyable with a wonderful cream tea to follow.

Any and all suggestions will be considered.

Quiz members were congratulated on coming third in the Group Competition.

Before we go to advertise outside the village, we would like you to have aother opportunity to come up with some ideas!

Plans are in the pipeline for a Race Night with a Difference in October - watch this space!

Please get thinking and get your ideas To The Village Hall Committee (post box at the village hall)

Workshops for stained glass and willow weaving have been arranged for later in the year, and members were urged to think of ideas for their Romsey Show entries.

Country & Crime Watch

Several members had attended Mottisfont & Dunbridge W I’s Cream Tea Afternoon in a beautiful setting and in glorious sunshine.

Weekly beat report from 01/07/2014 – 14/07/2014

Next month, Sue Waldron will tell us about her travels on a narrow boatideas for a future holiday, perhaps? Come and find out on August 14th at 7.30 in Awbridge Village Hall.

AWBRIDGE ~ Report of a white male wearing a high-vis jacket selling tarmac to home owners, the male was driving a small white van with a blue and white motorway sign on the side.

Yvonne Goodridge

Outboard motor thefts seem to be the flavour of the week this week, we have had several stolen from both moored dinghies and from sheds. Please secure them and also ensure you have a record of the serial number. Register your property on ‘immobilise.com’ or security mark it with one of the DNA marking products available. Last week we sent you the link to a Hampshire Police Webpage, which I am repeating here:- https://www.flickr.com/photos/ hampshireconstabulary/sets/ This is a webpage which has photographs of recovered stolen property, currently sitting in our property storage facilities. Property seized from criminals which we believe to be stolen. If you have been the victim of a theft based crime over the past 10 years then it’s well worth having a look to see if you recognise any items. Please let us know if you do so that we can reunite the property with its owner. The team are currently industriously preparing for this years big event, the New Forest Show on 29th, 30th and 31st July. Country Watch will be there on all three days in the new and very smart Hampshire Constabulary mobile police office. The Firearms enquiry team will be there to answer queries over Firearms Licensing and the Police and Crime Commissioner is attending on the Tuesday, together with the Assistant Chief Constable, Mr Pryde, who is also attending on the Wednesday. There will also be an opportunity to catch up with our very own Inspector Lou HUBBLE who will be making an appearance on the Tuesday and Wednesday so pop along to our stand and say ‘hello’ and we will sign you up for Hampshire Alert, a new communication channel which is being launched at the show. I will let you know more once the team and I have been trained next week. Debby Holman - Western Country Watch Sergeant

Awbridge Hill Wildlife Sanctuary August 2014 For visitors to the wildlife sanctuary, the presence of barn owls hunting at dawn and dusk has become a daily spectacle as the parent birds quarter the meadows in search of voles and mice to feed their young. The barn owl breeding season is a long one, the female sits on her eggs for about five weeks, then the young can take a further ten weeks to fledge and depart the nest. The presence of barn owls in Awbridge is significant as there are less than 4000 breeding pairs in Britain. The success of the local barn owl population can be in part, attributed to the abundance of short tailed field vole which are thriving in the grassy areas of the wildlife sanctuary. Of interest was the sighting of five red kite and two buzzard soaring over the stone circle at high noon on mid summers day, seemingly heralding the arrival of shortening days and the approach of autumn. One of the red kite was a clumsy juvenile only recently fledged from its nest. Another bird of prey making occasional appearances through early July has been the peregrine falcon. Blackcap, whitethroat, chiffchaff and willow warbler have been in full song through early summer, whilst at least one pair of hedge sparrow have been kept busy raising a young cuckoo to maturity. Prior to 2005, cuckoo had been absent from the area of the wildlife sanctuary, however their return is in part due to habitat creation benefiting hedge sparrow numbers. In recent years cuckoo numbers have severely dwindled across Britain, however like clockwork Awbridge cuckoo announce their arrival each year, around about the 15th March. This year the cuckoo continued calling until about the 2nd July. Other species of bird benefiting from habitat creation at Awbridge Hill, include bullfinch, linnet and goldfinch, as well as stock dove. For those interested in butterfly, this summer has been a marbled white one, however there has also been an abundance of large skipper, ringlet, gatekeeper and meadow brown. There have also been a small number of common blue as well as grizzled and chequered skippers on the wing. Unfortunately the wet end to the summer last year, appears to have affected species such as the white admiral and silver washed fritillary, whose numbers have crashed. Through June fox cubs have been active out on hunting forays with their parents in search of rabbits, however by mid July the young had begun to disperse and fend for themselves. Likewise in June several roe deer gave birth to kids, which were to be seen in their rich brown coats dappled with white spots, scampering around the area of the wildlife sanctuary. Bryan Raines

Old Church magazines

British Empire stands firmer today than ever - for we are showing the world that honour comes first. We are the ptotectors of small states all over the world and we are fighting to set Belgium free from the cowards and bullies who are laying waste her lands and murdering her women and children. Many brave Englishmen will lay down their lives in this magnificent work, but not a life will be spent in vain - the end will be renewed peace, and freedom for all, anddestruction of all tyrants!’

As usual I have come up with an idea which will probably have you running for the hills. Several years ago when The Old Smithy at the top of Awbridge Hill was being cleared out following the death of the last member of the Wools Family - hence the hill also being called ‘Wools Hill’ - a pile of old Church magazines was found and passed on to me. They mainly contain large chunks on national and international church news and discussions but the front or back covers usually have news about what was happening in Awbridge. The earliest copy is one from 1901 and then there is a gap until 1914-1917, another gap till the early 1920s then nothing till post WW2. There are also several from the 1950s and 60s.

A. H. HARGREAVES Vicar Obviously written in the patriotic fervour felt at the beginning of WW1 this felt quite shocking when I first read it. But this really was what the Nation was feeling at the time. Are you interested in this material? If so email me and we may just get it in the September edition.

What I thought might be of interest are the ones from WW1 and the early 1920s as these contain references to The Great War, life on the Home Front, fund raising for the War Memorial and Village Hall and so on. Perhaps copied from the original might be desirable but I don’t have the facilities to send you these; though my brother could probably oblige. As a taster here is the page from Sept 1914. Sept 1914

HAMPSHIRE COMMEMORATES - A Window to our Past, Present and Future

Baptisms July 5th - Olive Nellie, daughter of Charles and Rhoda Lucy Hood of Awbridge

Children in class 4 at Awbridge Primary School recently enjoyed a unique experience when Jon Callan of stainedglassetc, based in Dorchester, visited their classroom. Jon is the craftsman who will be making the new stained glass window for All Saints Church, and he spent an afternoon working with the children to help them understand the importance of what they are involved in, as well as listening to their ideas.

August 2nd - Arthur Frederick, son of Walter James and Fanny Moody of Newtown Lane Comment ‘It is difficult, in a few words, to say anything about the Great War. One can only say that never has England been engaged in such a tremendous conflict before, and never have we fought for a nobler cause. The whole civilised world is filled with admiration for a great nation that goes to war, not hoping to gain lands, or money, or power, but because duty calls. The

Jon feels it is very important in making anything to understand the tools and materials to be used, as well as setting any project within a wider context. In the course of the afternoon he and the children together discussed not just design, but also the history of stained glass windows,

*** EMERGENCY CALLOUT *** and why this window is going to be made this year in All Saints Church. He introduced the children to the Norman/French names for colours that are used in church windows, and explained the different stages of how stained glass is made and crafted into a variety of colours, shapes and patterns. The children handled tools and materials, and together with Jon they made a small example of glass work, which also provided a context for discussing health and safety issues. Afterwards Jon commented that the children were extremely interested and attentive throughout, and had been full of questions. Class teacher Sally Buckland said ‘the children have been fascinated to see how Jon works. They have thoroughly enjoyed his visit as well as learning a lot’.

NO JOB TOO SMALL !!! Awbridge Village Lunches 2014 Would you like to join friends and neighbours from the village for Lunch?

Menu The context for Jon’s visit is that this term, with their class teacher, the children have been looking back one hundred years to study World War 1 and its impact on their local village. Within that wider context they have considered the rural and farming nature of their local environment, and have been collecting specimens of wild flowers and leaves which are typical of Awbridge. They have given these to Jon to assist him in his task of designing a new stained glass window for All Saints Church, as a lasting commemoration of World War 1. The children have also spent time with a full-size outline of the window, considering with Jon how Awbridge in 1914 might be represented, and which plants might be used in the design of the stained glass window. The oak leaf, for example, relates to Kents Oak and much of the neighbourhood, as well as to the ‘hearts of oak’ which may be attributed to the young men of Awbridge who gave their lives in the Great War. Jon is intending to incorporate these examples from the Awbridge countryside into his design for the new window. The design will be developed over the next few weeks and submitted to Winchester Diocese for approval later this year.

Wednesday 2nd July was a beautiful sunny day, ideal for our trip to Furzey Gardens! Our party had the use of the Retreat House and we were looked after extremely well by their friendly volunteers. After a delicious cream tea on the terrace, we wandered leisurely around the gardens before returning to Awbridge. We would like to say thank you once again to everyone who donated teddies for our teddy tombola and to everyone who supported us at the village fete. The money raised made this enjoyable trip possible! Do you have some spare time to take people to medical or other appointments, to help with shopping or collect prescriptions? Would you like to help those in our neighbourhood who need transport for these journeys? If so Awbridge Neighbourcare would like to hear from you. For more information please contact 0845 094 6155. NEIGHBOURCARE ARRANGEMENTS - 0845 094 6155 Awbridge Neighbourcare volunteers are available to help, as good neighbours, to provide transport for all kinds of medical appointment or shopping. Our volunteers have allocated time to be available to help you, so your requests are vital to the work of this group. All you need to do is call 0845 094 6155 to speak to the co-ordinator to see if they can help you. If you would like to use Awbridge Neighbourcare, please could you try to give at least 48 hours’ notice when you need to book transport so that the duty co-ordinator has time to make the necessary arrangements. Although we will endeavour to help if shorter notice is given, we cannot guarantee the availability of our volunteers. Page 12  |  Aug 2014

Kooking with Kate Kate Buchan, Sous Chef at Kimbridge Restaurant gives you your seasonal recipe.

Orchid Massage

Fennel and cherry tomato wellingtons

Exclusively for women. Swedish Body and Aromatherapy from my treatment room at home in Awbridge.

Served with butternut puree This recipe serves 6 persons. Shopping List: 1 block frozen puff pastry 2 punnets cherry tomatoes 2 large fennels 100g vegetable stock 1 teaspoon mixed herbs 2 teaspoons chopped garlic

Melted butter for brushing the pastry For the Sauce: 2 butternut squash 200g vegetable stock 1 peeled & chopped white onion

How to make it: Peel and deseed the butternut squash and then cut up and place in a saucepan with the vegetable stock and the white onion. Cook and once all soft, using a hand blender, blitz the butternut and season. Place to one side for later. Chop the fennel and place in a pan with the vegetable stock to cook, once soft remove any excess water. Add the remaining ingredients and mix together, allowing cool slightly. Preheat the oven to 180˚C /350 ˚F/ Gas Mark 4. Roll out the pasty and cut into 6 equal squares. Place one 6th of the fennel mix in the middle of each puff pastry square, then butter the edges of the pastry and fold in the four points to the middle. Then fold in the four new points to the middle to make sort of a circular shape. Then turn the welly over and gently in a circular motion move over the table to twist the bottom shut. Place onto a baking sheet and cook of 20-25 minutes. Whilst the wellingtons are in the oven, reheat the puree and place some in the centre of the plate. Then place the wellington on top of the puree and serve.
