CREATOR
Johannesburg based Deon de Lange loves working with his hands and considers himself a maker working with diverse media. Equal parts eccentric and consummate creative, he channels his relentless passion into everything he does. Every product manufactured is approached intelligently, communicated creatively and crafted with care. He looks at design with a fun, artistic, and inventive twist. To him design is a way to determine how things function, not just how they look. Better known for his ceramic work, concrete is his new medium of choice. The brutality and honesty of the medium benefits from his skills acquired over many years, referencing to t e c h n i q u e s a c q u i re d f ro m o t h e r disciplines. Deon embraces the limitations of every medium he works in, yet still manages to push boundaries. Apart from boutique stores across South Africa, Deon’s work have also been showcased in Paris, Milan and New York. His showroom, Concrete Jungle is situated in 27 Boxes in Melville, Johannesburg.

POLYMER CEMENT CONCRETE
Polymer cement concrete is a composite material which results from the polymerization of cement and an aggregate mixture. The polymer acts as binder for the aggregates and the resulting composite is called Polymer Cement Concrete (PCC) The developments in the field of polymer concrete date back to the late 1950s when these materials were developed as replacement of regular concrete in some specific applications. Owing to it’s superior properties like rapid curing, high compressive strength, ability to form complex shapes, polymer concrete materials have also been extensively used for applications other than for which it was originally developed. By adding various types of fibers.to polymer concrete, the strength is enhanced. A microfiller is also often added to polymer concrete mix to reduce the void content in aggregate mixture and thereby increase the strength. The microfiller is a fine powder with a particle size less than 80 microns. Cenospheres is a by-product of coal burning in power plants and is used as a filler because of it’s easy availability and because it’s usage in polymer concrete is reported to yield better mechanical properties as well as reduced water absorption]. Addition of cenospheres also improves the workability of fresh polymer concrete mix resulting in products with excellent surface finish and it reduces the weight considerably. Fast curing is one of the biggest advantages of the polymer concrete systems, with results showing almost 70% strength development after one day of curing at room temperature. Normal Portland cement concrete, on the other hand, usually achieves about 20% of its 28-day strength in one day. This early strength development is very useful in casting applications. A 7-day room temperature curing is the optimum period for polymer concrete. Although polymer cement concrete is more expensive than traditional concrete, the superior finish and overall quality makes it the ideal medium for decor products.

KILROY TOILET PAPER STORAGE SHELF Inspired by the graffiti cartoon that originated during world war 2, ‘Kilroy was here.’ The mysterious doodle was found in every imaginable public space, most commonly in public restrooms. Being lost in the digital age, Kilroy returns to his rightful place, the bathroom, only this time he grew up to be a sleek accessory to be used as a storage shelf for unsightly toilet rolls.
