It has been a good year for The Denver Center for the Performing Arts. The Denver Center Theatre Company’s world premiere of Sense & Sensibility The Musical was widely critically acclaimed and proved to be its highest grossing show ever. Our production of August Wilson’s classic Fences played to packed houses. The Theatre Company’s eighth annual Colorado New Play Summit reached new heights, attracting record numbers of professional guests and playwrights from across the country and producing readings that have led to four world premieres. It was also a strong year for our Denver Center Attractions’ Broadway tours. A highlight was the launching of the The Book of Mormon national tour that sold out in four and a half hours. The season also was distinguished by an increasing number and variety of shows. Our education outreach is expanding rapidly. Through our Denver Center Theatre Academy we have directly served more than 240 schools and have substantially increased classes and summer camps in our Robert and Judi Newman Center. Student matinee attendance in our theatres this year exceeded 15,000. As a not-for-profit organization, we receive only 70% of our revenues from ticket sales and fees. Our ability to deliver world-class theatre and theatre education really depends on the generosity of our community. This fiscal year community support from individuals, businesses and foundations (including about 7,500 unique donors) was $8 million. In addition, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) contributed $5.4 million. Thank you. Thank you.

2012/13 SEASON

DENVER CENTER ATTRACTIONS

The Denver Center Attractions (DCA) season reflected the broadening scope of presentations, a trend that will continue moving forward. Additions to the Broadway fare included health and nutrition expert Dr. Andrew Weil, Frankie Valli in a one-night concert, and eight performances of David Sedaris presenting RANDY WEEKS material from his next book, with audiences Executive Director assisting in the writing process. It was a strong year for touring Broadway. Denver was chosen to open the national tour of the hugely successful The Book of Mormon; the show sold out in four-and-a-half hours and the line for the “day-of” lottery snaked around 14th Street. The Broadway season continued with La Cage Aux Folles, Memphis, Jekyll & Hyde and Catch Me If You Can. A major highlight was the highly praised War Horse. The season included the return of some great favorites. I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change played 101 performances at the Garner Galleria Theatre, followed by Denver’s favorite fast-talking Tupperware lady in Dixie’s Tupperware Party. The Galleria Theatre and Bar was completely transformed into a honky-tonk for The Doyle & Debbie Show. Jersey Boys, Mark Twain Tonight!, Spamalot, Blue Man Group, Mary Poppins and Les Misérables all enjoyed enthusiastic audience support. Capping off the year, DCA added a new component to its mission: The Bobby G Awards. Denver Center Attractions sponsored this Colorado High School Musical Theatre Awards program named for DCA’s late Robert S. Garner. The “Bobby Gs” joined “The Jimmys,” The National High School Musical Theatre Awards program. The two students voted the outstanding Actor and Actress of Colorado were sponsored for a a weeklong workshop in May at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. It was an opportunity for them to hone their talents and perform on a Broadway stage. These youngsters are our future. We were thrilled to spotlight their talents.

2012/13 SEASON

DENVER CENTER THEATRE COMPANY

Producing Artistic Director Kent Thompson’s vision and selections for the Denver Center Theatre Company’s (DCTC) 2012/13 season met with a gratifying approbation and success. August Wilson’s Tony-nominated classic, Fences, launched the season with packed houses. KENT THOMPSON Staged in the round in The Space Theatre, its Producing Artistic Director creative set design transported audiences to the front yard of a working class Pittsburgh neighborhood. Contrasting the dark momentum of that play came a stage adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ swashbuckling The Three Musketeers, complete with lavish costumes, romance, seductions and sword fights. Pursuing his ongoing commitment to family programing, Thompson included the stage version of Lois Lowry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Giver. The schedule counted many sold-out student matinees along with its regular run. Thompson staged a return of White Christmas in The Buell Theatre, while the comedy, When We Are Married, extended a nod to the often neglected British playwright J.B. Priestly. To accompany the 2013 Colorado New Play Summit were two fully staged world premieres selected from the previous year’s Summit readings: Michael Mitnik’s Ed, Downloaded, exploring the far reaches of brain downloading, and Grace, or The Art of Climbing which took audiences on a journey of physical as well as emotional survival. Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet followed in a production marked by a starkly simple set and elaborate costumes. The season ended on high notes with a contemporary drama and a world premiere musical. Jon Robin Baitz’s suspenseful Other Desert Cities scored a major hit with DCTC audiences. The world premiere of Sense & Sensibility The Musical, also selected by Thompson from the 2012 Summit, opened to impressive acclaim. This musical, led by Tony-nominated director Marcia Milgrom Dodge, played to sold-out houses in the final two weeks of its run, becoming DCTC’s highest grossing show ever.

The buzz around the eighth annual Colorado New Play Summit was perhaps the noisiest it’s ever been. The stars aligned to bring together a stellar lineup of five provocative and entertaining plays. The number of professional guests and playwrights in attendance grew to record numbers. The Playwrights’ Slam, at which mostly commissioned writers read short excerpts from their latest work, was a rousing ending to the first afternoon of readings. Participants included Lauren Feldman, Michael Mitnick, Karen Zacarías, Laura Eason, Marcus Gardley, Catherine Trieschmann, Matthew Lopez, Eric Schmiedl, James Still, Tanya Saracho, Idris Goodwin and Robert Schenkkan. Five new plays were read at podiums: The Vast In-Between, Laura Eason’s trenchant look at the strains economic desperation puts on a marriage; black odyssey, Marcus Gardley’s African-American lyrical and often humorous spin on Homer’s epic tale; The Most Deserving, Catherine Trieschmann’s satire of a small-town arts council run amok—and The Legend of Georgia McBride by Matthew Lopez, a deeply felt comedy that shows what happens when an Elvis impersonator must turn to drag, of all things, to support his growing family. Karen Zacarías’ Just Like Us, adapted from Helen Thorpe’s book of the same name, follows four Latina girls in Denver who want to excel in life but are hindered by their economic and immigration status. Thorpe, an on-stage character in the play, was on hand to provide feedback, and even Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, himself an off-stage character, attended the reading. All four of the young women whose lives are dramatized in the play also attended and met with the cast. At the closing-night party in the Seawell Ballroom a hip-hop DJ lured the crowds to the dance floor. Where else would you see playwright Karen Zacarías dancing the swing with Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert Schenkkan?

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Tam Dalrymple Frye, Director The Education Department reaped the benefits of developing a new three-year strategic plan that focused on “increasing the impact and engagement for all students” participating in any educational activity at The Denver Center for the Performing Arts. In the fall of 2012, the department hired five professional teaching artists to meet increasing demands in the schools. These teaching artists, professional actors or directors in their own right, visited more than 240 metro-area schools providing The Denver Center’s arts-integrated curriculum, Dramatic Learning™. These teaching artists reached more than 12,000 students, increasing the number served by almost 20% from last year. Larry Hecht (DCTC actor and former Head of Acting for the National Theatre Conservatory) was charged with meeting the growing demand from adults attending the Denver Center Theatre Academy. Thanks to increased programming and a sequential curriculum, the number of adults attending the Academy nearly doubled over last year, while overall the Academy attendance increased by more than 24%. In short, the Education Department comfortably achieved its goal of reaching more students, training more artists and providing quality arts education in the schools. The Education Department will endeavor to continue on this path next year by incorporating a high school playwriting competition, strengthening its corporate training programs, increasing its offerings for at-risk students and providing training for teaching artists.

My name is Maggie Sczekan and I wanted to check in and say thank you. I began taking classes with your school when I was 13 years old, returning another summer to do both tracks of the teenage intensive. I returned again after my first year of college (Oberlin Conservatory of Music) to do the NTC summer intensive for adults… I auditioned for the DCTC this year and after seeing Christmas Carol just about every year since I was three, I’ve been cast in the show, and I know a huge part of that is because of the education I received from you. It’s very special to me that my first Equity show is here at home in Denver, and to finally get to go into the Blue Studio (or Yellow or whichever) as a hired actor after being there for many years a student is going to be an incredible joy. With much love and gratitude to all of you, Maggie

THE NUMBERS

Off-Center’s eventful and successful second season continued its mission of serving as a test kitchen for The Denver Center and new entry point for artists and audiences by producing four prototypes in FY13:

Each show experimented with different types of programming, new collaborations, and new audience engagement techniques, expanding the show outside of the theatre. Off-Center succeeded in attracting new people. Sixty percent of ticketed accounts were new to The Denver Center. Off-Center brought in 7% of new audiences to the Denver Center Theatre Company (DCTC) with a budget that is 1.8% of DCTC’s total expenses. Off-Center’s audiences skew younger, with 82% of its Facebook fans and 74% of the DRAG MACHINE audience surveyed falling between ages 18 and 44. In the targeted efforts to reach people who don’t already attend The Denver Center productions, Off-Center learned word-of-mouth is key; the large majority of audiences heard about the shows from friends. Off-Center’s marketing and outreach focused on giving audiences tools and incentives to share information with their friends. Highlights from Season 2 included: n Riding with the Denver Cruisers to promote SWEAT. n The long line outside waiting for the DRAG MACHINE doors to open (all scheduled shows were sold out and two extra performances were added). n Winning the “Best Date Night at the Theatre” award from Westword. n Sharing what has been learned with the performing arts field by presenting at five national performing arts conferences and having our “Let Them Drink Beer” article featured on the Theatre Communications Group Blog.

Denver Center Events & Operations Facilities

14

FACILITIES Clay Courter, Director, Facilities Management Major HVAC work was completed for the Robert and Judi Newman Center for Theatre Education building and the Bonfils Theatre Complex in mid-FY13. In addition, all The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) staff and operations were relocated from the Champa building, and responsibility for the control and management of the building transferred back to the City of Denver. Energy Consumption Update Energy conservation has been a major priority. Prior to 2008, the DCPA was spending an average of $650,000 per year to heat, cool and power the Bonfils and Newman buildings. In contrast, $567,000 was spent for the same services in FY13. Below are some of the ways in which this was accomplished: n In 2009, an energy auditing firm completed a study of DCPA facilities and made recommendations based on its findings; n The DCPA aggressively moved toward implementing these recommendations, making strides in energy efficiency by encouraging conservation and replacing obsolete and inefficient building and computing systems, lighting and switches;

n

In FY12, HVAC units in the Bonfils and Newman buildings were replaced—leading to significant reductions in steam and chilled water consumption in the first year of operation.

As a result of these efforts, over the last five years the DCPA has: n Reduced total daily average Bonfils and Newman KWH consumption by 21% from baseline consumption (2004-2008), saving more than 2.3M kilowatt hours; n Reduced steam consumption 14% from baseline and chilled water consumption 24% from baseline in less than 18 months; n Seen reductions in operational savings of more than $273,000 since 2008. These were achieved in an environment in which electrical rates have increased 15%, and steam and chilled water rates have increased 9% and 18%, respectively; n Received more than $100,000 in rebates from Xcel Energy as a result of the upgrades to infrastructure.

Competitive advantages for the Seawell Grand Ballroom: n 10,000 square feet of flexible space to accommodate various size events; n Events produced by a full service, in-house production team with a balanced skill set of creativity, state-of-the-art equipment and detailed logistics management; n Proximity to the Colorado Convention Center and neighboring hotels; n Strong brand recognition as being part of The Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Denver Center Events gave a solid performance throughout FY13, with 119 events booked from external clients. Forty percent of those sent along unsolicited positive feedback and accolades, with zero negative post-event recaps. In addition, three local not-for-profits with events hosted in the Seawell Grand Ballroom reported their highest historical net revenue from such fundraisers in FY13. The ballroom continues to host a combined average of 200 internal and external events per year, including a mix of social, corporate, educational, not-for-profit and convention-related segments. During FY13 Denver Center Events garnered praise from The Knot with the 2013 “Best of” Award and the ICON Awards’ “Event of the Year for the wedding production of Mr. and Mrs. Brad Farber.” While gross sales revenues were consistent with last year, expenses increased 10%. The increase stemmed from labor costs from two events related to establishing new partnerships and broadening the marketing of the room. These efforts ultimately resulted in four confirmed weddings for FY14. Notwithstanding, ballroom operations continued to generate positive net income and substantial in-kind revenue for FY13. The staff continually seeks to increase business and to focus on social events. From 12 (weddings/mitzvahs) this year to the 17 weddings already confirmed for FY14, the marketing campaigns and the dedicated efforts of the team to drive social business are clearly paying off.
