‘Old Miners Day’ to be held An “Old Miners Day” will be held Sunday, July 17, at the Iron Center museum in Port Henry by the Town of Moriah Historical Society. This will be “by invitation only.” Refreshments will be served to the participants. The historical society is reaching out to any past Republic Steel Corp., Mineville District workers who would like to gather for a type of “gab-fest” to discuss their time working for the mining company. Photos will be shown to help recall certain things that may have happened. The event will be recorded for future generations. Interested people can contact Brian Venne at 5467704.

New citizen understands freedom By Fred Herbst
fred@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Most Americans know George Washington is the father of our country. Do you know his birthday? Saifullah Gondal does — and a lot more about American history and government. Gondal and his cousin, Mohammad Iqbal, will celebrate the Fourth of July this year on the verge of becoming American citizens. The Crown Point men are scheduled to be sworn in as U.S. citizens in a ceremony at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh July 8. “It’s very exciting,” Gondal said. “I’m looking forward to it very much. My family is coming from Pennsylvania
and after the ceremony we’ll all come back to Crown Point for a dinner. It will be a wonderful day.” He’s also looking forward to July 4th. “It won’t be official, but on July 4th I can celebrate being a citizen,” Gondal said. “I’ve long wanted to be an American citizen.” Becoming a U.S. citizen is no easy task. After becoming a permanent resident, a person must prove “good moral character,” must agree to follow the principles of the U.S. Constitution, must pass English reading, writing and speaking tests, must pass tests on U.S. government and history and must take the oath of allegiance. “It’s been a lot of work, but I’ve had a lot of help,” Gondal said. “People in Crown Point have been very nice

SCHROON LAKE — Schroon Lake will again celebrate independence, hosting its traditional Fourth of July events. Despite struggling to find funding for the parade, the celebration will mirror past holidays, according to Kate Hutson, Schroon July 4th chairwoman. “Contributions came in, not as well as last year but enough to keep us afloat,” Hutson said. The celebration will get under way with the 32nd annual Community Church chicken barbecue. Serving will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church on Main Street. Tickets are $9 for the dinner. There will be activities in the town park from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. “Art Bucket” will provide air brush tattoos and face painting and the ADK Shakespeare Company will perform acts from Shakespeare plays. The Schroon Lions will have a food tent and noon to 5:30 p.m. a “bounce around” will be available for children.

T I C O N D E R O G A — Ti c o n deroga’s Independence Day celebration will pay tribute to those who have made it the Best Fourth in the North. Organizers have selected “July 4th Through the Past” as the theme for this summer ’s events. “We want to celebrate and honor the organizations and people who have kept the Fourth of July alive in the community,” explained Matt Courtright of the Best Fourth committee. “We want to involve as many people as possible.” The parade will include a float carrying all past grand marshals and another carrying former celebration planners. The annual Best Fourth in the North celebration is decades old, at last 60 years, although no one seems certain when it started. “It started with the (Ticonderoga) fire department,” Angela Brown, committee chairwoman, said. “Then the chamber (of commerce) took over
