CANTON — Doug Hoffman, a certified public accountant and community advocate in Northern New York for 32 years, has announced he is forming an exploratory committee to seek the Republican endorsement to run for the 23rd United States Congressional District. Congressman John M. McHugh, R-Pierrepont Manor, was recently nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as Secretary of the Army. Hoffman made his announcement June 16 while making stops at four locations within the 23rd District, including the Days Inn in Plattsburgh. Hoffman is a lifelong resident of the North Country and has lived in both Franklin and Essex counties graduating from Saranac Lake Central School District, as well as North Country Community College. He also attended college in Canton and received a bachelor ’s degree in accounting from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. He earned a masters in business administration majoring in finance and accounting from the University of Connecticut. From 1993-2008 Hoffman was a member of the North Elba/Lake Placid Republican Committee. He also served as chairman for five years from 2002 to 2006. Hoffman served in the U. S. In addition, he has been a board member and treasurer of the Adirondack Council of the Boy Scouts of America, The Adirondack Economic Development Corp., the Lake Placid/Essex County Visitors Bureau, and the Lake Placid 2000 Club (organized to work toward the return of the Winter Olympics to Lake Placid). He was also president of the North Country Community College Foundation and the Adirondack Chapter of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. I look at this as a service to my community and country.” Hoffman has worked in Connecticut for Price Waterhouse & Co., ensuring his CPA status before returning to the North Country to become the Corporate Controller for the Lake Placid 1980 Olympic Organizing Committee and starting his own CPA practice. in Malone, Lake Placid, Canton, Massena and Watertown. Through his 32 years of experience as a CPA, he has worked with thousands of individuals and businesses in the District and understands how difficult it is to make financial ends meet in Central and Northern New York. “I fully understand the legislative process through my 30 years of monitoring tax law changes as they are introduced into legislation and pass through the Congress or Assembly and the Senate to become law on both the state and federal level,” Hoffman said. “My profession as a CPA requires me to understand and comply with these tax laws as we advise our clients to plan and prepare their tax returns. As an active member of the community, I am aware of the political, economic and financial issues the district is facing.” Hoffman and his wife Carol Torrance have been married for 36 years and have three adult children, Ashleah, Douglas Torrance and Taylor.
