Farming museum now step closer to reality By Jeremiah S. Papineau

PERU — Their dream will soon be a reality. As each day goes by, Leeward C. Babbie of Peru and his nephew, Rick Laurin of Chazy, are getting closer to the opening of the Babbie Rural and Farm Learning Museum. The museum, which will be located on Babbie’s former dairy farm on River Road, has been a plan the two have had in the works for some time to showcase the agricultural history of the North Country. In January, the two scored what they consider a major win for the museum. The state Department of Education recently awarded the museum its charter as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which both feel will help gain financial support for the museum. “What that does is opens us up for accepting donations that people can use for tax write-offs,” explained Laurin. Most recently, Babbie and Laurin were awarded a $625 grant from the Upstate History Alliance, an organization which “provides support, advice and training to historical societies, museums, historians, archivists, and other heritage organizations in New York State.” The grant will be used to send Laurin to a three-day seminar that will help with the opening of the new museum.

Overall, the two, along with a band of faithful volunteers, are working hard to make good use of the space. “It’s tough though,” said Laurin. “We really want to get a grant for another building, and we’re looking at other options. But, we have to use the space we have.” “It’s using what you have and using it well,” added Laurin. Laurin and Babbie said they anticipate a a grand opening the weekend of Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13. The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, will feature a book signing by Dr. Joseph Burke. Burke recently published a book about the late William H. Miner, a man wellknown locally in the agricultural field. The museum will also open its doors the weekend before, Saturday, June 5, to participate in Clinton County Museum Day. That day will feature open houses at museums across the county, explained Laurin. “We’re really excited about that,” he said. Museum memberships are available by contacting Laurin at 846-7269 or Babbie at 643-9252. Donations to the museum may be mailed in care of Babbie Rural and Farm Learning Museum, 250 River Road, Peru N.Y. 12972.

“There’s a whole bunch of topics from laying out museums to working with donors in the modern economy,” said Laurin. The process of opening the museum has moved along much faster than Babbie and Laurin originally thought it would. “The average museum takes three to five years to open. We’re going to open in 18 months,” said Laurin. “We’ve had people who can’t believe it happened so fast for us.” “We can’t wait for the day,” said Babbie, who has been working diligently with Laurin in recent months to prepare for a June opening. “There aren’t enough weekends,” Babbie said with a laugh, referring to the time he’s been working on the project. The museum will consist of several buildings, including a milk house, hay barn, animal barn, granary, manger, and displays of antique farm equipment. A full conference room will also be available to companies for a modest fee and potentially free for nonprofit organizations. “This is going to be a nice room,” said Babbie, as he stood in the presently unfinished room. “It’s coming along,” agreed Laurin.

Silver Lake Road bridge to be replaced Summer-long project will involve detours, says highway superintendent By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com BLACK BROOK — Work is expected to soon begin on a major artery between the towns of Black Brook and Saranac. The bridge on Silver Lake Road which spans across the Saranac River, south of the Casey Road intersection, is scheduled to be replaced this month. The new bridge will be constructed of concrete instead of steel used in the current structure. Clinton County Highway Superintendent Albert H. Rascoe said the need for the replacement is based on the circa 1946 structure receiving a categorization as being “structurally deficient” during an August 2008 Federal Highway Administration inspection. “It’s considered to be below the federal scoring sufficiency, which is the cutoff point for replacing or repairing a bridge structure,” Rascoe explained, adding “deteriorated elements” are what led to the determination. Construction is expected to begin sometime within the next two weeks, dependent on weather conditions, said Rascoe. When the project does begin, the highway superintendent said highly-visible signage will be put in place in advance, marking the detour route. The route will consist of using Guide Board, Swastika, Goodrich Mills and Turnpike roads. “If you live on the south side of the bridge, it will take a few extra minutes, that’s for sure,” said Rascoe. “But, if you’re traveling through the area, then the detour ’s not so bad. The residents will be the most affected.” Regardless if you’re a nearby resident or just passing through, Rascoe said it will be a good idea to add a little extra time into your travel plans.

News in brief ‘Logger’comes to town SARANAC — Comedian Rusty DeWees, best known for his stage name, “The Logger,” will perform this weekend — Friday, April 2, and Saturday, April 3 — at Saranac High School, 60 Picketts Corners Road. The performance, which will be held each night at 8 p.m., will be to benefit the Saranac Volunteer Fire Department. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at the door or by calling Wayne Emerson at 293-8131 or Cole Bunker at 492-2014.

CVPH Easter Egg Hunt to be held this Saturday The bridge on Silver Lake Road which spans across the Saranac River, south of the Casey Road intersection, is scheduled to be replaced this month. The new bridge is expected to be open by Labor Day, said Clinton County Highway Superintendent Albert H. Rascoe. Photo by Jeremiah S. Papineau

“Depending on where you’re coming from or what you’re doing, the detour may or may not have a big impact on you,” he said. The project will consist of removing the entire existing structure, including its foundation, pouring a new foundation and constructing the new bridge complete with a new deck. Railings on and leading up to the bridge will also be replaced and the portion of road approaching the bridge from both directions will receive new paving. “There’s a lot of work involved,” said Rascoe, adding the result will be “a bridge that will be slightly wider, a little bit longer in span.” “It’s a complete structural replacement to meet current [FHA] standards,” he added. “It should be good for 60 plus years.” The project, which is anticipated to be com-

pleted by Labor Day, will be handled by Luck Brothers Inc., the Plattsburgh firm which was awarded the contract last September. The county’s role is managing the contract and to provide a full-time inspector on-site while work is performed. The project will be wholly-funded through $2.2 million in economic stimulus money through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, said. Rascoe. The funding is part of an additional $13.6 million for transportation projects in the North Country area awarded through the ARRA last June. According to the office of Gov. David A. Paterson, the investments are to “provide for essential highway and bridge repairs and other long-term improvements” expected to create an estimated 326 jobs across the state.

PLATTSBURGH — CVPH Medical Center will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 3, on the front lawn of the hospital, located at 75 Beekman St. The egg hunt will begin at 10 a.m. sharp, with 10,000 eggs to be hidden. Children second-grade age and younger are eligible to participate. For more information, call 5627320.

It’s spring cleaning time! Direct deposit and you

T

his week we start a two-part series on computer springcleaning. Required tools are minimal, but a trip to the store may be necessary for a duster, which is a can of compressed air designed to be used around sensitive electronic devices, and a small paint brush. Depending on the level of determination a cleaning area may be set up with an old sheet on the floor or something similar. Start with a good wipedown of everything except the keyboard with a soft cloth dampened with a mild solution. Mechanical mouse users should flip the mouse over, remove the retainer ring/mouse ball and use a small rigid tool to scrap away gunk on the rollers. Unplug the keyboard, take it outside, invert it, shake out the debris and blast it with the duster. Then give it a good cleaning being careful not to take the characters off the keys. Clearing the inside of the computer is recommended but obviously a step some users cannot perform. The PC may be too heavy to mess with or opening the case may be hard to figure out (a visit to the manufacturer Web site may help). Be aware of the potential damage to the

system by static electricity. Protect against it by not touching any of the electrical components with your hands. Disconnect everything (pay close attention to where things are plugged in), open the case, take it outside and remove the dust by blowing with the duster. Trim the bristles of the brush a little shorter and use it to dislodge stubborn dust areas as necesBy Ron Poland sary. Hook everything back up and know if the system acts like the keyboard/mouse is disconnected it could be the two connections are reversed. If so, remove power, reverse the connections and give it another try. Keep an eye out for next week’s column where we’ll delve even deepers into the important chore of including your computer on your list of things to do for spring cleaning!

The cool days of spring The new North Countryman

T

he air has been pleasantly and unseasonably warm for a good part of March. And, if you are like me, all this beautiful weather has given you spring fever. Right now, I want nothing more than to be out in my garden planting my vegetables, flowers and herbs. But, I know I have to be cautious. Even though the days are getting warmer, we are still quite a ways off from our average last frost date. The average last spring frost date is the day, or range of days, in which the last frost typically occurs. If you live closer to the lake that date can range between April 30 and May 20. But, if you live in the Adirondacks, the date ranges from May 20 until the beginning of June! So, despite our urge to get out there and plant, we need to make sure what we plant is not susceptible to frost. Luckily for us, there are many garden flowers that prefer the cool days of spring. Two of the most popular cool season annuals are the pansy and viola. These beauties do best during the cool

spring and fall weather. Dead-heading the flowers will keep the blooms coming for weeks. And, now there are several varieties that tolerate a light freeze. While we all love our summer tomatoes, now is not the time to plant them. They are not tolerant of frost and prefer warmer soil temperatures. There are many cool season vegetables that do allow us to harvest crops from spring through the fall. Most of the vegetables that you can get into the ground within the next few weeks are leafy vegetables or root crops. If you are thinking about planting soon, think about radishes, carrots, onions, beets, spinach, lettuce, Swiss chard, and bok choy. And, of course don’t forget about peas. Spring is the perfect time to get your peas into the ground! W

e at Denton Publications would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the new North Countryman. We’ve combined the former Clinton County Free Trader Today and North Countryman newspapers to provide you a better news product — one that bears the same name as its predecessor which formerly served only the Northern Tier. The North Countryman will now not only include coverage of communities like Champlain, Rouses Point, Mooers, Mooers Forks, Chazy and West Chazy, but will now include the former Free Trader territory. Communities like Peru, Saranac, Dannemora, Schuyler Falls, Morrisonville and Cadyville will now find their news here. Though the name of the publication has changed for people in those areas, their content will still be found here — and then some, said senior editor Jeremiah S. Papineau. “With the new North Countryman, we will continue to bring news of interest to the people who previously received the Free Trader,” said Papineau. “The benefit is people in Cadyville or Morrisonville, for example, will now receive

news from the Northern Tier and viceversa.” Editor Sarah L. Cronk said the new North Countryman is something she is “truly excited about.” “This will give people in the area the news of all of Clinton County, not just a portion of it,” said Cronk. “For those readers out there whom we highlight in a feature or write a story about, I hope it will also be encouraging for them to know we will now reach more than 16,000 homes with the newly combined paper. Their news will be in the hands of many people.” Both editors think the new design of the North Countryman will be something readers will really enjoy. “We’re working hard for our readers to get more content of varied interest and present it in a fresher and more appealing format,” said Papineau. “I think the design pops out at the reader and gets their attention and I really hope they appreciate that,” added Cronk. Jeremiah Papineau may be reached via e-mail at jeremiah@denpubs.com. Sarah Cronk may be reached at sarah@denpubs.com. Both may be reached by phone at 561-9680.

Some days are worth more than others I

n a past column, I touched on one of the most interesting tips for saving at the grocery store: you can save even more money by shopping certain days of the week! Sound surprising? It’s true. The day of the week we shop can make a big difference in how much money we can save. Many supermarkets, especially large chains, run dual sets of sales each week. A typical week-long cycle may begin on Thursday and run for seven days. Then, when Sunday comes around, a second sales flyer hits the newspapers. This supplemental set of sales typically runs for four days, Sunday through Wednesday. If your store runs dual sales cycles, the best days to shop are the days both sets of flyers overlap — typically, Sunday through Wednesday. These are better shopping days because two different sets of sales run in the store simultaneously. Sometimes those two sales actually overlap, offering different types of promotions on the same products. If this happens, simply shopping the days the two sales overlap lets us enjoy bigger benefits. Here’s an example: During a recent sale, a brand of crackers was on sale for $2.19, Buy One, Get One Free in the weekly, 7-day flyer. On Sunday, the store’s second 4-day sales flyer came out, and the same brand of crackers was on sale “Buy Two, Get Two Free.” During the same week, both of these sales overlapped for four days. My shopping radar always goes up when I see something like this, because I know this sale’s going to be fun! When an item is BOGO on one sales cycle and simultaneously Buy Two, Get Two Free on the second sales cycle, how many are we buying, and how many are we actually paying for? In this case, we’ll buy one ... and get three more free. Let me explain. Anytime you’re dealing with BOGO sales, it’s important to remember the free item still counts as a “purchase.” And that purchase qualifies as something you’ve “bought” toward the second sale.

So, let’s break this down. I buy one package of crackers, and I get the second package free. The BOGO sale is done. But the second sale on the same brand of crackers is Buy Two, Get Two Free. The first two packages that are scanned qualify as “buying” two (even though the second package is technically free) and the next two packages of crackers will also ring up free as part of the second sale. If it seems a little confusing, don’t worry — the register automatically handles both sales automatically. After everything was scanned, I paid $2.19 for all four packages of crackers. And I didn’t even use a single coupon! I simply shopped on a day where two sales on the same product overlapped. When stores run dual sales flyers, they’re also trying By Jill Cataldo to drive more traffic to the store on days when the store isn’t as busy, which are typically earlier in the week. And, that second sales flyer usually has more deeply discounted items and prices than the week-long flyer. In addition to enjoying two sets of sales, shopping the lesser-trafficked days does give us other advantages: shorter checkout lines! On the rare instances I go to the store later in the week, I’m always amazed at how much more crowded the store is if I shop on a Friday or a Saturday versus a Monday or a Tuesday. Want one final tip? Because of the higher traffic the store enjoys at the end of the week, items like meats and produce will be reduced to clear once those busier shopping days pass. These items are still of fine quality, but the store is going to have new stock to place out as the end of the week approaches again, so they will reduce the previous week’s stock to make room for what’s coming in. I never tire of going to the store and seeing the same hamburger patties that were $4/pound reduced to $2/pound as soon as the weekend has passed!

The evidence of global warming: it’s hard to deny L

ast weekend, I journeyed to Hamilton for the 29th annual Rendezvous of the New York State Outdoor Guides Association. The featured speaker was Jerry Jenkins, a well-known botanist, naturalist and the author of “The Adirondack Atlas,” as well as the soon to be released book, “Climate Change in the Adirondacks: The Path to Sustainability.” Jenkins’ address, which focused primarily on the effects of climate change on the Adirondacks, was an eye-opener for many of the assembled outdoorsmen and women. He illustrated the presentation with a combination of charts and graphs, which provided insights into the effects that can be expected as temperatures continue to rise over the next century. Predictions included a diminishing number of winter days with snow cover, a later freezing over of lakes and ponds and earlier ice outs. Seasons will no longer be as distinctive as the length of winter diminishes. Summers will be hotter and drier and the bo-

real forest will gradually disappear, along with many common species of birds and wildlife. Weather extremes will become more common, with heavier rains, hotter days and even greater snowfalls. The most notable change will be cultural, as the region’s long history of winter sports will become increasingly vulnerable to the warming climate. As Jenkins sadly noted, “The ski, the snowshoe and the snowmobile are as much Adirondack symbols as the guideboat or the paddle.” After traveling south through the Adirondack communities of Long Lake, Raquette Lake and Old Forge, which were all nearly snowless, I found Jenkins’ presentation especially disturbing. On the return trip north, I traveled Route 8 from Ohio to Morehouse to Speculator, and finally from Wells to Schroon Lake. Along the

route, I found scant evidence of a hard winter. A few lakes were already open and there were no towering snowbanks along the roadside; rivers weren’t roaring with high water and only a few riverbanks were cluttered with blocks of ice. Following a hunting season that offered just a single day of actual tracking snow, the growing evidence of global warming is difficult to deny. In concept, as Jenkins explained, climate change can be arrested, however the process will require a worldwide effort of concerned citizens and others with the political will to make a difference. The process will require major sacrifices and new forms of energy consumption and development. Unfortunately, the longer we forestall implementation of such measures, the sooner we will

suffer the consequences. The saddest irony of the whole equation is our parents toiled through the Great Depression, then saved the world in World War II. They were the “Greatest Generation.” They lived to see a man on the moon, and gave birth to a generation that wanted to give back to the earth. However, at some point along the route, the ‘70s environmentalists became more concerned with a big house on the hill and two SUVs in the yard. Greenbacks replaced green stripes as an overtly consumptive tenor overtook a generation that had promised to make a difference. At our current rate of consumption, I often wonder about the world our children will inherit. Will it look anything like it did when we were given the responsibility for it? Will we become the “Damnedest Generation”?

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Whether you can swim or not, “Aqua Zumba” may be the exercise class you’ve been waiting for. According to www.zumba.com, Aqua Zumba is a “pool party” workout for all ages. The water-based workout takes the Zumba workout and blends it with “aqua fitness disciplines.” “A bit part of the Aqua Zumba is incorporating the upper body with the arm movements,” explained YMCA aquatics director and Aqua Zumba instructor Patti Warner. “You’ve got a lot of resistance.” In fact, the resistance of the water is approximately 12-

times that on land, according to an informational sheet provided by Warner. “The benefit of the extra resistance, using your arms, is you get a lot of core work as well,” Warner explained. However, for those with shoulder issues or other injuries, the resistance can be reduced, simply by modifying the exercise. Aqua Zumba is also a good exercise for the lower body, including legs and hips. “It’s a good way to do pretty much a total body [workout] in the aquatics environment,” Warner explained. “And you don’t realize it, because you’re just having fun.” Although Aqua Zumba is good for men and women of all ages, Warner especially

sees benefits for older women. “It’s so important, especially for women, to keep those muscles [strong] with the issues of aging, osteoporosis,” she said. “And, just like any other fitness class, you go at your own intensity level, depending on what your goals are. But the social environment, the fun environment, that’s just as important.” Currently, the Plattsburgh YMCA, located at 17 Oak St., is the only Aqua Zumba class in the area. Classes are held every Monday, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and membership to the gym is not required. Warner is also looking to add more classes during the next session, which begins in May. For more information, call 561-4290.

omen On Weights is a program I designed specifically for women focusing on issues that a lot of women face. It has become quite popular since the first sessions were held and there is a lot of interest and questions about the program. Women On Weights is a progressive strength training program, which teaches women proper form and technique. This class focuses on building a strong core, balance, flexibility, and overall body strength. You will learn why weight training is important and how it can help to improve and/or prevent common issues women face like: Insomnia, osteoporosis, body fat, weakness, stress, poor balance, etc. This class is not your typical group exercise class with music blaring and sweat dripping from a non-stop high-intensity workout. Instead I like to treat this class as a group personal training session where I go around and give everyone

guidance to be sure the exercises are being completed with proper form. In this respect I do limit the number of people in each class. The next session will begin Tuesday, April 13, at 5:30 p.m. at the City Recreation Department, 52 U.S. Oval, and will meet every Tuesday evening for 8 weeks. Since class size is limited, pre-registration is required. The cost of the class is $80 for the full session. To pre-register for the class, contact me directly at 605-3549. My journey to the half-marathon

By Martha Breyette ow what a difference a week makes. Last week I had a rough week, but what I learned from it is I am healthier and stronger than I was a year ago. I took a few days off to recover but started back up exercising with no issues. I followed my routine this week as normal and feel better than ever. I am hoping to hit my next goal of 30 lbs. lost before the race and I am getting close, so it is exciting. I can’t tell you how amazing it feels to think back to where I was a year ago and realize what a difference baby steps can make. A year ago at this time I was in the hospital and missed weeks of work. Exercise was the farthest thing from my mind, much less a half marathon. It just goes to show anyone can do it if they put their mind to it. I can’t believe that in a week I will be 40 and my goals of being fit

are coming to fruition. My friends and family have been fantastic — they support me and help wherever they can to keep me on track. Signs of spring are coming and it has been so nice to get outside; I have been encouraging my mom to start walking with me. My daughter and I are already planning to do fun runs together this summer and start riding our bikes more. For those following my journey, thanks for all the words of encouragement. For those thinking of starting on a journey, it is never too late. Take it one day at a time and start small. Baby steps will build. This weekend I am scheduled to do 10 miles — stay tuned next week to see if it becomes a reality. (Editors Note: Martha Breyette of Saranac is on a 14week goal to get in shape to compete in the inaugural City of Plattsburgh Half Marathon, Sunday, April 18. Breyette will share her trials and tribulations in this newspaper through a weekly journal entry.)

Motivational speaker gives ideas of what to do when life gives you lemons By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — When the announcement came Pfizer Inc. was closing its doors in our region, professional speaker Tom Bull of Plattsburgh wanted to do something to help the community. Next Saturday, April 10, from 2-4 p.m., Bull will present “Transforming Life Challenges into Empowering Principles for Daily Living.” “[I] wanted to do something for the community, particularly because of what’s going on with Wyeth, but just nationwide. Actually, worldwide,” Bull said. “Our economy is hurting so many families.” Bull said he has recognized when many people are going through trying times, especially with the economy, they “neglect” their own spirit. “What we’re dealing with, particularly with people who lose their jobs — that can certainly break people down,” he explained. “Their identity is in their jobs and they have a lot of people relying on them financially. So, they may not feel they’re as adequate or they’re insignificant.” To help these people, Bull said his message is meant to power and encouragement people. “Carry peace with them wherever they’re going,” he explained. Bull said he also provides “practical tools and principles”

Parents, children welcome to St. Mary’s Pre-K open house By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — Families on the prowl for a Pre-K program for their 4-year-olds will be able to visit St. Mary’s April 6-8, and see a new program in the works. “We’re going to be adding the 3-year-olds to the program,” explained teacher ’s aide Ann Pinto. “We thought there was a need for it in the community,” she added. “We had a lot of inquiries from parents interested in a 3-yearold program and we thought it would be good for the community and good for the school.” Pre-K teacher Mary Anne Shaughnessy said she hopes parents will visit the school during the open house to see the learning environment they offer. “The thing about St. Mary’s is it’s in the regular school, so we they have a lot of resources available,” she explained. “It’s got a group of people who work there and it’s a very caring and loving environment.” Shaughnessy said for parents who choose to visit the school, with children welcome to attend as well, the best time would be from

9-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-3 p.m. “You could stay all day, you can stay 10 minutes, you can stay an hour,” she said. “Just enough so they can see what the program is like.” Since there is currently no program for the 3-year-old age group in place, both Pinto and Shaughnessy said seeing the Pre-K program will give a good idea of what will be available in the fall, as they plan to have a similar structure. “Any activities that we could do together, like play in the playroom and things like that, we could probably do,” Pinto said of the new program. “But the 3-year-old program would be a lot less structured than the 4-year-old program.” Shaughnessy said the program will give a good introduction to what kindergarten will be like for the children. “They’re part of the school here,” she said. “They’re included in everything from little prayer services or ceremonies, to the Catholic Schools Week,” she said. “They are doing gym and library and music ... just like you get in kindergarten.” For more information about the open house, or the Pre-K program, call St. Mary’s Academy at 298-3372.

Smuggling leads to three arrests SBDC to host series CHAMPLAIN — U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the federal arrests of three subjects in the smuggling attempt of a Brazilian national. The arrests were a direct result of cooperative enforcement operations between CBP’s Field Operations and Border Patrol. On Feb. 28, CBP Field Operations officers encountered Marcelo Pimentel, 33, Harrison, N.J., as he applied for admission into the U.S. at the Champlain port of entry. Pimentel explained he and his wife, who was traveling in a separate vehicle directly behind him, were returning from Canada after visiting a Montreal casino. Pimentel’s wife, Tatiane Pimentel, 33, a Brazilian national with lawful U.S. permanent resident status, advised CBP officers the two were returning after visiting family in Montreal. CBP officers also discovered what appeared to be an excessive amount of luggage in her trunk. Due to inconsistencies in their travel itinerary and the personnel effects discovered, both subjects were referred for a secondary enforcement exam. During the course of the inspection of the luggage found in Tatiane Pimentel’s vehicle, CBP officers discovered two Brazilian passports not belonging to either subject. It became apparent to CBP of-

ficers the rightful owners of the personal effects and passports may be attempting to enter the U.S. illegally at a place other than a port of entry. CBP officers notified the Swanton Sector Office of Border Patrol to relay their findings. Within a few hours, Border Patrol agents in St. Albans, Vt., advised CBP officers they found two Brazilian nationals matching the description given by CBP officer. Border Patrol agents determined the two had entered the U.S. illegally, at a place not designated as an official port of entry, thereby evading inspection by CBP officers. Both subjects were transported to the Swanton Border Patrol Station, where Border Patrol agents verified the two subjects in custody matched the biographic information contained in the passports located at the Champlain port of entry. At the completion of interviewing all subjects involved, both Marcelo Pimentel and Tatiane Pimentel, as well as one of the Brazilian nationals, were charged with alien smuggling. The remaining Brazilian national is being detained as a material witness. All subjects are currently being detained pending prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of NY.

of seminars, classes begin Wednesday By Michael O’Keefe Special to Denton Publications PLATTSBURGH — Small business owners, it’s time to get focused. The North Country Small Business Development Center has partnered with Cornell Cooperative Extension to present a series of seminars for small business owners in the North Country. Rick Liebowitz, regional director of the North Country SBDC, will host the threepart series, which will include topics such as financial security, marketing tactics and cash return for well-researched products. “It’s for people just starting out in small business,” Liebowitz said. “They are financial management seminars.” SBDC and CCE are two community focus groups that use seminars and community outreach to increase quality of life in New York communities. CCE is directly funded by Cornell University. The seminar will begin this Wednesday, April 7, from 7-8:30 p.m. at CCE, 6064 State

April 3, 2010 Route 22, Suite 5. The first night, titled “Keeping Score to Win the Game: Cash is King,” will focus on “certain areas within a business that can quantify performance,” according to Liebowitz. The director gave the example of food service, in which a business would need to know how much and what type of food and supplies to get in order to have a successful food service establishment. The second night, Wednesday, April 14, will focus on three things that can “increase your net profit performance.” Liebowitz said this night will explain what makes your money and how to make more of it. “There is the old claim, ‘If you build it they will come,’” Liebowitz said. “But, you have to have incentive.” Liebowitz said the seminars would concentrate on helping small business owners focus their operation, thus making small businesses in the area more profitable and efficient. The final night, “Shout it Out Marketing,” will focus on advertising and marketing. Liebowitz said the final seminar will focus on how to “get a big return on their marketing dollar.” The registration fee for the seminar is $25, with pre-registration required. For more information, contact CCE at 5617450, or visit the SBDC Web site at www.northcountry.nyssbdc.org Michael O’Keefe is an intern with the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Bringing cycling back to the North Country By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — For the last three years, Paul Maggy has been working to make the North Country a cycling destination. Last year, Maggy began work on the Adirondack Bike Ranch in West Chazy, followed by the formation of a bike club. Today, April 1, he opens a bike shop. Located at 30 City Hall Place, Mountain Riders is a middle- to high-end bike shop, focused on biking enthusiasts. “[We’re] not trying to discourage beginning cyclists, but we’re just a little bit more of a core cyclist shop,” Maggy explained. “Being a new bike shop, there’s not 15 to 20 years worth of leftover tools and parts and accessories and bikes here,” he added. “Everything is new.” The store has mountain bikes, road bikes, BMX and dirt jump bikes. They offer bike sales, rentals, repairs, accessories, and are certified for bike fitting. However, Maggy assures he is not looking to be the competition for other bike stores in the area.

“From what we can tell, they seem to carry the lower- to middle-end,” he said. “What we’re trying to do is hit a completely different niche.” One group of people Maggy hopes to attract to the store are those who currently travel to Burlington or Lake Placid. “What we found is there was a large community of cyclists about five to seven years ago,” he said. “While not getting their needs met, basically moved on to other activities, outdoor sports. They’re all starting to come back as they see what’s going on. It’s growing.” “We want to be part of the change that's happening in Plattsburgh towards a more healthy outlook and lifestyle,” Maggy added. The shop will be open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout April, with hours to be extended as warmer weather approaches. Maggy is also offering a tune-up special for the month of April for $15. “Get everybody’s bikes out and rolling,” he said. “I’ll go through and make [sure] everything works.” For more information, call 324-9900, e-mail info@mtn-riders.com, or visit www.mtn-riders.com. 33509

Schumer outlines legislation to help unemployed By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — There’s a new law that aims to put people to work and help give businesses a break at the same time. During a visit to the NovaBus manufacturing facility in Plattsburgh March 30, U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., announced the recent signing of legislation into law by President Barack Obama that now provides tax incentives to companies that hire people unemployed for 60 days or more. Schumer co-sponsored the Hire Now Tax Cut Act of 2010 with U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, in an effort to put aside partisan politics for a common goal, he said. “The number one issue facing people in the North Country and America is jobs,” said the senator. “In the North Country it’s even worse. One out of every 10 people is looking for work.” The North Country’s unemployment rate is more than 10 percent — higher than the state average of nearly 9 percent — and is alarming, said Schumer. “We have to do everything we can to put people back to work,” he said. The new law, explained Schumer, will provide businesses of any size that hire eligible workers with a Social Security payroll tax exemption, which amounts to 6.2 percent. “So, if you hire someone making $30,000 a year, you save $2,000. If you hire someone making $60,000 a year, you’ll save $4,000. If you hire some-

one making $100,000 a year, you’ll save over $6,000,” said Schumer. “It goes all the way up the spectrum.” The most important thing, said Schumer, is that the credit — which is funded by leftover economic stimulus money — is available immediately. “If tomorrow, NovaBus were to hire five people,” Schumer said, referring to qualifying workers, “they would stop paying the payroll tax for all five of those people.” “It’s not going to solve everything, that’s for sure,” Schumer added. “But, at least it’s going to encourage companies ... it will be a little cheaper to hire them with this credit.” James Tooley, manager of the Plattsburgh Nova Bus facility, said the credit is something that could benefit businesses such as Nova Bus in the future. “I think we are looking at it to see how it fits into our business plan but, from a personal standpoint, I think it makes a lot of sense,” said Tooley. Nova Bus will assess contracts for future projects to see if production will require the company to hire employees beyond the 195 full-time ones the plant presently has, said Tooley. That news is encouraging to hear for local officials like Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernard C. Bassett. “We’re at a point right now,” said Bassett, “where literally anything and everything helps make the decision to grow, to invest in your business ... Anything that makes it easier for an employer to grow has value.

During a visit to the NovaBus manufacturing facility in Plattsburgh March 30, U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., discusses legislation signed into law recently by President Barack Obama which provides tax incentives to companies that hire the unemployed. Photo by Jeremiah S. Papineau

Jogging for St. Jude’s

Hopping around

Ken Herz of Chazy jogged on a treadmill all day March 27 at Global Fitness and Martial Arts in Champlain, for Workout for a Cure, which raises money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Herz raised a total of $1,700 for the charity by running 20 miles, using pictures of St. Jude’s patients as motivation.

Children from throughout the community took part in finding 2,000 Easter eggs at the Rouses Point’s Dodge Memorial Library’s second annual Easter Egg Hunt, March 27. Children and their families also enjoyed an open house at the library with a book sale.

is a new line of beverages on the café side and necklaces on the gift side. “In the café part, we have a whole line of purefruit smoothies and crunch coffees and special kinds of lemonade and teas,” Tetreault said. As for the necklaces, she is special ordering what look to be peas in a pod made from freshwater pearls and sterling silver. “They’re really cute,” said Tetreault. She is also hoping children will enjoy the atmosphere of the station when they come out to the egg hunt. “The kids are always fascinated by the trains going by,” explained Tetreault. She plans on separating the children by ages 23 and 4-6, with the younger children’s eggs more or less hidden in plain sight, to make it easier for them. Some glitter eggs will also be scattered about, with a special prize inside. Tetreault also plans to have some games or crafts set up for the children. “Depending on how many kids show up,” she said. Hoping community members will get more involved in the area is just another reason Tetreault said she is hosting the egg hunt. “Not a lot goes on up here,” she said. “Just trying to do things so people don’t have to travel far to do things.” Children are asked to bring their own baskets to the egg hunt.
