BRAD JOHN BECOMES NEW CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Each year during the Leadership Institute, important Delta Upsilon business takes place. This includes electing members to the International Fraternity's Board of Directors. On July 29, 2023, during the Assembly of Trustees at LI, Brad John, Iowa '96, was elected as the Fraternity's 33rd Board of Directors Chairman.

John joined the Board of Directors in 2018 and brings experience as a former International Fraternity Headquarters staff member, a chapter advisor and Board member into the role. He has received a BA from the University of Iowa and a BS from DeSales University. Professionally, he has been in the insurance industry for 20 years and is the Head of Life Sciences for The Hartford. Brother John currently resides in Indianapolis, Indiana with his wife and three daughters.

"I am honored to be elected as Chairman," John said. "I am fortunate to be in the position of continuing the good work of past Boards. There are many challenges ahead, but I believe that fraternity, and Delta Upsilon in particular, is more relevant that ever. We will immediately begin to dive into the implementation and execution of our new strategic plan. It is our 'North Star' to maintaining our position as the premier fraternal organization Building Better Men."

As John begins his tenure as Chairman of the Board, the Fraternity celebrates the accomplishments of Past Board Chairman Robert Lannin, Nebraska '84, who retired from Board service during the Leadership Institute. Lannin joined the Board in 2013 and served as Chairman from 2018-2023. During his tenure as Chairman, Lannin's leadership helped the Fraternity successfully navigate a global pandemic; further its data-driven decision making through the Membership Outcomes Assessment; enhance its educational program offerings; and launch a new strategic plan.

"I’ve often said that I could never begin to give back for all I have gotten out of Delta Upsilon," Lannin said. "That remains true. I am so grateful to all my fellow Board members, past and present. I know without doubt Brad John will do an amazing job as the new Chair. He is perfectly suited to the job. So, I know our future is bright."

During the 2023 Assembly of Trustees, the alumni delegates also elected Michael Daley, Western Ontario '05, and John Roberts, Florida '86, to the Board of Directors as Alumni Directors. All Alumni Directors of officers are elected to two-year terms. During the Undergraduate Convention, two Undergraduate Directors are elected to the Board each year for one-year terms. Logan Caudill, Bradley '24, and Aiden Powell, Wichita '25, were the two undergraduates elected this year.

Delta Upsilon would like to thank the dedicated members of the Fraternity's Nominating Committee, which includes: Chairman E. Bruce McKinney, Missouri '74; Michael Daley, Western Ontario '05; Rick Holland, Syracuse '83; Bill Messick, Lafayette '68; Steve Rowley, Ohio '65; Rick Taylor, North Carolina State '82; and Nick Welton, Lehigh '10.

DU PORTAL THE

In a groundbreaking announcement at the 2023 Leadership Institute in Kansas City, Delta Upsilon unveiled a transformative new tool that is set to redefine the Fraternity's operations. With the help of technology and strategic partnerships, the DU Portal is set to automate numerous aspects of DU's operations, enhance the member experience, and bolster educational programming.

The DU Portal will serve as a membership hub for Delta Upsilon. Through the DU Portal, all members and volunteers will be able to view and update their contact information and communications preferences with the International Fraternity. On the chapter level, each DU chapter and associate chapter will have access to view and update their membership roster, view and update chapter officers and advisors, pay dues and other invoices to the International Fraternity, and even track recruitment leads and prospects through a recruitment pipeline tool.

Previously, all contact information changes and chapter membership updates—like associate member and initiate reporting, as well as other roster updates—were collected through a basic online form and then had to be manually entered to the Fraternity’s database by a member of the International Headquarters staff. Because the DU Portal integrates with the Fraternity’s new Salesforce database, not only are the reporting forms and processes more streamlined, but also all updates made in the DU Portal are now made in the Fraternity’s database in real time, saving significant staff time and allowing members to see the updates as they happen, ensuring receipt and accuracy.

Executive Director Justin Kirk expressed the Fraternity's excitement, stating, "Delta Upsilon is proud to partner with ChapterSpot to launch the DU Portal. For several years, we have worked to find a system that would integrate our chapter reporting to our database so we could ease the workload of our staff and also provide a better user experience for our members. Post-pandemic, we have seen a growing need and want from our membership to have a better online experience, and the DU Portal is the first step in providing that experience."

DU PORTAL THE

FEATURES FOR ALL MEMBERS

The DU Portal is designed to cater to the needs and interests of all Delta Upsilon members, whether they are an associate member, undergraduate, alumnus or DU volunteer.

1. Manage Personal Information

The DU Portal will allow all members and volunteers to view and update their personal information with the Fraternity. This includes their contact information, education history and employment history. In the future—fall 2024 being the goal—you will also be able to view your individual giving history to the DU Educational Foundation.

2. Membership Directory – coming in fall 2023

A Membership Directory or Brother Search as long been a wanted feature for DU alumni. The DU Portal will include a comprehensive membership directory, making it easy to find and contact other DU brothers.

3. Event Registration – coming in fall 2023

Attending an in-person DU educational program is a highlight for any undergraduate or DU volunteer. Soon, event registration for all of DU’s in-person programs will happen through the DU Portal’s event registration system.

KEY CHAPTER REPORTING FEATURES

While the DU Portal caters to all members, it offers a wealth of features specifically designed to empower chapter officers and advisors, helping them lead their chapters more efficiently and effectively.

1. Chapter Reporting

Streamlining chapter reporting has long been a goal for DU, and the DU Portal delivers on this front. At any time, an undergraduate member can now log into the DU Portal and view their chapter’s current membership roster, and certain chapter officers are able to make updates in real time. That includes noting if someone has graduated or resigned, as well as adding new associate members and reporting when they have been initiated. This functionality ensures that chapters maintain accurate records and meet national reporting requirements.

2. Recruitment tools

Recruitment is a cornerstone of fraternity/sorority life, and the DU Portal equips chapters with powerful recruitment tools. Any undergraduate member can enter a new potential new member (PNM) into their chapter’s recruitment pipeline and offer notes about the individual. Chapter officers can then manage PNMs, schedule recruitment events, and track recruitment metrics, making the recruitment process smoother and more data-driven.

3. Enhanced Financial tools

Chapter Vice Presidents of Finance will appreciate the advanced financial tools within the DU Portal. Chapters can now make payments to the International Fraternity directly through the DU Portal and view their invoices and balances in real time.

4 DELTAU.ORG

VIRTUAL PROGRAMS

In addition to the Fraternity’s partnership with ChapterSpot for the DU Portal, Delta Upsilon has also partnered with Plaid, a virtual education platform, to offer online educational programming. The Plaid portal can be seamlessly accessed through the DU Portal, offering members a wealth of educational resources under one user login.

1. Tightrope/Highwire

All associate members will complete Plaid's Tightrope program before initiation. This program covers essential topics such as alcohol and substance abuse prevention, hazing prevention, sexual assault prevention, and mental health awareness. It equips new members with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate fraternity life responsibly and safely. Highwire is a sister program to Tightrope and is geared for students who made need additional health and safety programming.

2. Big Brother Training Program

Developed by the North American Interfraternity Conference and Plaid, the Big Brother Training Program ensures that experienced members are well-prepared to guide and support their newer brothers.

3. Cultural Competencies program

With the Diffusion of Liberal Culture as one of Delta Upsilon’s Four Founding Principles, Delta Upsilon is committed to equipping its members with cultural competencies. DU will pilot this program with certain chapters in 2023-2024 to help members understand and appreciate diversity, fostering an inclusive environment within DU.

HOW TO ACCESS THE DU PORTAL

• All DU members and volunteers with a valid email address on file with the International Fraternity will receive an email invitation to the DU Portal with instructions on claiming your account. These email invitations will be staggered.

• Week of Aug. 14 - International Fraternity volunteers, undergraduate chapter officers, advisors, alumni chapter officers

• Week of Aug. 28 - All undergraduate members and associate members

• Week of Sept. 11 - All alumni

• All new associate members will receive their invites as soon as they are reported to IHQ by the chapter through the DU Portal.

• If a member does not have an active email on file with the International Fraternity, they can manually claim their account by going to https://portal.deltau.org and clicking “Sign Up.” From here, the individual will be asked to provide information (such as first and last name, chapter, birthday, etc.) that can be matched to their record in DU’s database. They will then provide an email that can be added to their account and be used to send the DU Portal email invitation.

• To log into the DU Portal, all users will register for an FSID, which will be used to log into the DU Portal. FSID stands for Fraternity-Sorority ID. Our partners at ChapterSpot also manage portals for a variety of interfraternal services. Your FSID would work as a universal login (also known as single sign-on) for other sites using FSID, including Plaid.

• Once logged into the DU Portal for the first time, all users will be promoted to update/ confirm their preferred contact information.

MARCH 26, 2023

“A fraternity is a living organism. It's a living organization. You have high times, you have low times, times of strength, times and weakness. In truth, it becomes what you make it to become.”

Al Parker, Purdue ’75, used these words to describe the Purdue Chapter and its history during his Charge Address on March 26, 2023, as part of the chapter’s Initiation and Reinstallation Ceremony.

The chapter, which started as a local fraternity, the Cleofan Club, in 1902, officially became a part of Delta Upsilon during its Chartering on Dec. 6, 1914. Then, as Brother Parker described, the chapter had a series of high and low times in which membership numbers would ebb and flow and multiple chapter houses would come and go. Each time, a group of passionate, dedicated brothers would revive the group. Eventually, in fall 2019, a small group of members remained in the chapter and decided cease operations. Even though the chapter had closed, once again, alumni brothers worked closely with International Fraternity staff to secure the chapter’s future and an eventual return.

In spring 2021, Delta Upsilon began expansion recruitment efforts to return the Purdue Chapter to West Lafayette. With gathering restrictions still in place on campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the first group of associate members were recruited virtually or during one-on-one meetings with DU staff. During this time, DU Leadership Consultant Matthew Ferguson, Nebraska ’20, lived in the Purdue Chapter house to help alumni with upgrades to the facility and manage recruitment efforts. The group’s Associate Chapter Ceremony was held on April 25, 2021, marking Delta Upsilon’s official return to campus.

Over the next year, the associate chapter worked diligently to complete the requirements for Reinstallation, which include

continued recruitment and other operational benchmarks. During this time, the Purdue Associate Chapter also took part in a Delta Upsilon first. During the 2021 Leadership Institute, the International Fraternity’s Constitution & Bylaws were amended to allow associate chapters to initiate members prior to their Re/Installations. In fall 2021, the Purdue Associate Chapter members became the first group of associate members in the Fraternity to take part in the Initiation Ceremony.

During his Charge Address, Brother Parker continued to remind the young Purdue DUs of the importance of their Fraternity membership and creating a lasting legacy.

“I probably learned more about management and running organization as an undergrad at DU, than I did all my courses at Purdue and my degrees going forward,” Parker said. “You never finish being a DU, and perhaps DU is never finished with you. … I charge you to become a better man. These few years that you're at our chapter, they go by so very quick, and yet they set the tone for your entire life.”

The Purdue Chapter’s Reinstallation Ceremony was held at the Purdue Memorial Union on March 26, 2023, with alumni, parents and friends of DU in attendance. During this time, the Initiation and Officer Installation Ceremonies were also held, and the Purdue Alumni Chapter presented scholarships to undergraduate brothers. The Ritual Team consisted of Bob Lannin, Nebraska ’81, Chairman of the International Fraternity Board of Directors as Master; Chapter Advisor Jacob Ellis, Purdue ’16, as Examiner; Chapter Advisor Chad Laux, Purdue ’95, as Chief Marshal; and Alumni President Jeremy Laux, Purdue ’97, as Chaplain. A reception was held at the chapter house following the ceremonies.

INDIANA

Brother Griffin Eckstein, Indiana ’25, dedicated his spring break to participate in the DU Global Service Initiative in Jamaica where the International Fraternity has been building a local school. Brother Eckstein reported on his return that the experience was “life changing.” Philanthropy and service are pillars of the Indiana Chapter with the entire chapter supporting GSI through the DU Doghouse event, an annual fundraiser in which IU students are invited to the chapter house to play dogs from local shelters. The 20222023 event raised nearly $2,000 to support GSI.

IOWA STATE

The Iowa State Chapter sent eight brothers to the Fraternity’s Global Service Initiative trip to Jamaica in March. On campus, the chapter also volunteered at a blood drive, made blankets for a local organization and participated in food drives. The chapter’s Delta Hoopsilon and DU Drive-Thru events also raised money for efforts, such as GSI.

JAMES MADISON

For many chapters, James Madison included, the 2022-2023 year was the first year of full, inperson operations since the pandemic began. Highlights of the year included the chapter hosting its first out of town formal since 2019 and having more than 50 guests attend the Initiation Ceremony for its nine new brothers. The chapter also hosted its first Trivia Night with more than 60 people in attendance.

TORONTO

Following a two-year break due to COVID-19, the Toronto Chapter returned to having its traditional formal DUck Hunt event that brings associate members, undergraduates and alumni together to connect and celebrate DU. Unlike the usual tradition of having the event at the chapter house, the chapter hosted the event at an external venue that proved to be very promising idea for future events. The large attendance of chapter members, alumni and sorority members brought the opportunity to form new social connections and networking opportunities for members.

Delta Upsilon remembers the lives and legacies of two beloved brothers, both of whom received the Fraternity's Founders Medal, which recognizes DU alumni and volunteers for their support of the Fraternity above and beyond the bonds of brotherhood.

Ronald Coble, Purdue '58, received the Founders Medal in 2009 for his dedicated service to the Fraternity, particularly with the NC State Chapter, where he was instrumental in the chapter's return to campus. Brother Coble was born Feb. 14, 1936, in Richmond, Indiana, and passed away on March 9, 2023.

Ronald Kovener, Indiana '55, also received the Founders Medal in 2009 for longtime service to the Indiana Chapter, where he served as Chapter Advisor, Alumni President, and House Corporation President and Treasurer. Brother Kovener was born Dec. 19, 1932, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and passed away on July 26, 2023.
