Do many students at Delta State receive financial aid? Yes. Over 75% of Delta State students receive some type of assistance—grants, loans, work study, or scholarships.

What is a Pell Grant and how much money can I get? A Pell Grant is money that a student can receive, based on income and family size, that does not have to be repaid. Grant amounts range from $400 to $5,550 per year. The average family of 4 whose income is above $60,000 a year may not qualify for a Pell Grant.

If I am not eligible for a Pell grant, what financial aid can I receive? Students who do or don’t receive a Pell grant may also receive student loans and federal work study. The type of loan is based on

income. Some loans accrue interest while the student is in school and others do not. Work study is based on income also. Some students who do not receive a Pell grant will qualify for work study and others will not.

What is the maximum loan amount for Freshmen? Freshmen can borrow up to a maximum of $5,500 per year in subsidized and unsubsidized loans. If a student needs additional funds the parents may be able to borrow on the students behalf.

Do grades have an effect on my financial aid? Yes. Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average (C average) in order to continue receiving financial aid. Students who habitually drop classes or withdraw from school may also lose their financial aid.


Federal Financial Aid Students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application by March 1 if they are interested in applying for the following federal aid programs. To learn more visit www.fafsa.ed.gov. Federal Pell Grant Federal Pell Grants are need-based awards for undergraduate students who have not earned a Bachelor’s or professional degree. Pell Grants, unlike other loans, do not have to be repaid.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) A FSEOG grant is for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Priority is given to students who receive the Federal Pell Grant. FSEOG does not have to be repaid, and the award usually ranges from $100–$600 per year depending on the availability of funds.

Federal Work Study Federal Work Study at DSU provides approximately 275 undergraduate and graduate students with financial need a part time job on campus. The students work 8 hours per week at minimum wage, and paychecks are issued on the 15th of each month. Work Study award amounts must be earned and will not be applied toward fees at registration.

Interest begins accumulating immediately. A number of repayment options are available. You are responsible for repayment of this loan.

Subsidized Loan Subsidized Loans are loans with a variable interest rate up to 6.8% made to students attending school at least half-time. This loan does not accrue interest as long as the student is continually enrolled in 6 or more credit hours per semester. You are responsible for repayment of this loan.

Parent Plus Loan Parent Plus Loans enable parents with good credit histories to borrow money for the education expenses for each child who is a dependent undergraduate student enrolled at least half-time. The interest rate for the PLUS loan is variable, but the interest rate will not exceed 9%. Parents are responsible for beginning repayment of this loan 60 days after the final disbursement. Perk ins Loan Unsubsidized Loan An Unsubsidized Loan means the interest does accrue while you are enrolled. These loans have a variable interest rate up to 6.8%.

Perkins Loans are low-interest loans for students with exceptional financial need. Funds are limited, and you are responsible for repayment of the loan.

Mississippi Residence Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG)

Nursing Education Loan Scholarship

MTAG is offered to Mississippi residents attending state approved public and nonprofit two-year or four-year eligible colleges and universities. Entering freshmen must have a 2.5 grade point average with a minimum 15 ACT score as well as meeting other eligibility requirements listed on the MTAG application. Students receiving a full Pell Grant are not eligible. The application deadline is September 15.

Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG) MESG offers up to $2,500 to Mississippi residents who are first-time freshmen attending a state approved public and nonprofit two-year or four-year eligible colleges and universities. Students must have a 3.5 grade point average and a 29 ACT score as well as meet other eligibility requirements listed on the MESG application. The application deadline is September 15.

The Nursing Education Loan Scholarship Program is available to junior, senior, and graduate students who are pursuing a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing. The application deadline is March 31.

Nursing Teacher Stipend The Nursing Teacher Stipend is available to Nursing Education Loan Scholarship participants who are pursuing an advanced degree in nursing and who contractually agree that upon degree completion will teach at an accredited school of nursing in the State of Mississippi. The application deadline is March 31.
