THE ELLIOTT-ELLIOTT-HEAD

Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Center DR. ROBERT L. ELLIOTT

Founder, CEO and Director of The Elliott-Elliott-Head Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Center Dr. Robert Elliott is the driving force behind this Center. Colleagues often remark that his energy seems boundless. Indeed, it often is. In 1973, when the Center was founded, Dr. Elliott’s dream was to create the finest center for total breast care. With that step behind them, the dream continues. Dr. Elliott carries out research to discover new treatments and therapies and has implemented a team approach to bring total breast care to his patients. Dr. Elliott sees patients from all over Louisiana, the Southeast, and across the United States. He collaborates on research projects with other scientists around the world. Most recently, he has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Norwegian Radium Hospital in Norway, the largest cancer treatment and research facility in Europe, to share research data and collaborate closely in the development of new breast and prostate cancer vaccines and other therapeutic approaches. Dr. Elliott has spoken to medical audiences in the United States and Europe and has authored many papers and abstracts. He has also authored Breast Cancer-Anger at the Enemy, which deals with the lack of total breast cancer care available for women. He shares his own frustrations and heartaches of caring for dying cancer patients as they struggle for survival, and finally sends a message of hope as he and his research team search for a cure for breast cancer. Trained as a general surgeon, Dr. Elliott feels that breast care should be a specialty of itself, with patients being able to receive the highest quality of care from one physician who reads their mammograms, examines them, performs their surgery, and administers their therapies. To advance this concept and to share his experience with other physicians who specialize in breast care, Dr. Elliott founded the American Mastology Association. He currently serves as President of this society. In spite of a busy calendar of meetings and research, Dr. Elliott’s first love is his patients. He devotes the majority of his time to the Center and to helping women overcome breast disease. Dr. Elliott was bestowed an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Delta State during the 2009 spring commencement ceremonies for his humanitarian service, his research success, and his extraordinary contributions to the university community.

DR. MARY C. ELLIOTT

Founder and Vice President of The Elliott-Elliott-Head Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Center Dr. Mary Elliott has been an integral part of the Mastology Center since it began in 1973. She is a Board-Certified Family Practitioner who has devoted the last 15 years entirely to primary breast health care. In addition to routine examinations, she teaches breast self-examination to patients, reviews their mammograms, does ultrasonography, and does follow-up of patients with fibrocystic mastopathy and other breast conditions. But her primary aim is the early detection of breast cancer in order to provide less devastating treatment and hopefully better outcomes. She also assists Dr. Robert Elliott in surgery.

LIGHTING THE FIRE WITHIN Dr. Robert L. Elliott never forgot his undergraduate days at Delta State and how the faculty and staff at the institution inspired him to make the most of his life. That motivation helped carry him through The University of Mississippi School of Medicine where he graduated first in his class, and then to a distinguished career as a physician and medical researcher who founded the Elliott-ElliottHead Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Center, one of the leading privately-owned cancer research centers in the world. During a visit to the Delta State campus in 1991, Dr. Elliott’s feelings for Delta State and his pride in being a graduate were rekindled. He and his wife, Dr. Mary C. Elliott, also a Delta Sate graduate, decided to give something back to the school that had meant so much to them. Dr. Elliott said at that time: “I want to help perpetuate the legacy of Delta State as a school that helps the individual student to grow personally as well as academically and professionally. I want to be involved in a program to stimulate young minds, just as my mind was stimulated by teachers and administrators at Delta State who genuinely cared about me. I want to give something back to Delta State and its students, and I want the students to learn from these experiences that every time we give something we get something.” The Elliott-Nowell-White Science Symposium is the result of one of Dr. Elliott’s goals—to introduce Delta State students to scientists of international stature who can serve as role models. Or, as Dr. Elliott expressed it: “to light a fire in today’s student in the same manner that a fire was lit in me by those who influenced my life when I was a student at Delta State. Those who have the ability to inspire students to do their best, to achieve their full potential, are the real heroes of society even though they frequently go unrecognized.” The Elliott-Nowell-White Science Symposium is only one of several initiatives undertaken by Drs. Robert and Mary Elliott to benefit Delta State students through “The Elliott Program of Excellence.” Each year, one or more Delta State students participate in what has become an annual “Research Fellowship Program” with the Elliotts and other members of the staff at The Elliott Mastology Center in Baton Rouge. “I think the internship program is a great way for me and the members of my staff to receive some personal stimulation from young students coming to our facility, and I believe the experience will be a tremendous asset for Delta State University and its students,” Dr. Robert Elliott said. In addition, the Elliotts have established a scholarship program that provides fully funded scholarships for outstanding Delta State students. Recipients of these prestigious scholarships are honored with the title of “Elliott Scholar.”
